Abstract:The goal of the paper is to give a complete description of the images of noncommutative polynomials with zero constant term on upper triangular matrix algebras over an algebraically closed field. This is a variation of the old and famous Lvov-Kaplansky conjecture.

Abstract:The Fagundes-Mello conjecture asserts that every multilinear polynomial on upper triangular matrix algebras is a vector space, which is an improtant variation of the old and famous Lvov-Kaplansky conjecture. The goal of the paper is to give a description of the images of linear polynomials with zero constant term on the upper triangular matrix algebra under a mild condition on the ground field. As a consequence we improve all results on the Fagundes-Mello conjecture. As another consequence we improve some results by Fagundes and Koshlukov on the images of multilinear graded polynomials on upper triangular matrix algebras.

Abstract:In the present paper we shall obtain the following result: Let n≥2 and m≥1 be integers. Let p(x1,...,xm) be a polynomial with zero constant term in non-commutative variables over an algebraically closed field K . Suppose that 1≤r≤n−1 , where r is the order of p . Then p(Tn(K)) is a dense subset of Tn(K)(r−1) (with respect to the Zariski topology). This is a solution of a problem presented by Gargate and de Mello and a supplement to a result obtained by Panja and Prasad in 2023.

Graded polynomial identities of the infinite-dimensional upper triangular matrices over an arbitrary field

Abstract:We compute the graded polynomial identities of the infinite dimensional upper triangular matrix algebra over an arbitrary field. If the grading group is finite, we prove that the set of graded polynomial identities admits a finite basis. We find conditions under which a grading on such an algebra satisfies a nontrivial graded polynomial identity. Finally, we provide examples showing that two nonisomorphic gradings can have the same set of graded polynomial identities.

Abstract:We study the LND conjecture concerning the images of locally nilpotent derivations, which arose from the Jacobian conjecture. Let R be a domain containing a field of characteristic zero. We prove that, when R is a one-dimensional unique factorization domain, the image of any locally nilpotent R -derivation of the bivariate polynomial algebra R [ x , y ] is a Mathieu-Zhao subspace. Moreover, we prove that, when R is a Dedekind domain, the image of a locally nilpotent R -derivation of R [ x , y ] with some additional conditions is a Mathieu-Zhao subspace.

Abstract:We study algebraic complexity classes and their complete polynomials under \emph{homogeneous linear} projections, not just under the usual affine linear projections that were originally introduced by Valiant in 1979. These reductions are weaker yet more natural from a geometric complexity theory (GCT) standpoint, because the corresponding orbit closure formulations do not require the padding of polynomials. We give the \emph{first} complete polynomials for VF, the class of sequences of polynomials that admit small algebraic formulas, under homogeneous linear projections: The sum of the entries of the non-commutative elementary symmetric polynomial in 3 by 3 matrices of homogeneous linear forms. Even simpler variants of the elementary symmetric polynomial are hard for the topological closure of a large subclass of VF: the sum of the entries of the non-commutative elementary symmetric polynomial in 2 by 2 matrices of homogeneous linear forms, and homogeneous variants of the continuant polynomial (Bringmann, Ikenmeyer, Zuiddam, JACM '18). This requires a careful study of circuits with arity-3 product gates.

Abstract:Left-right and conjugation actions on matrix tuples have received considerable attention in theoretical computer science due to their connections with polynomial identity testing, group isomorphism, and tensor isomorphism. In this paper, we present polynomial-time algorithms for computing canonical forms of matrix tuples over a finite field under these actions. Our algorithm builds upon new structural insights for matrix tuples, which can be viewed as a generalization of Schur's lemma for irreducible representations to general representations.

Abstract:Let $UT_2$ be the algebra of $2\times 2$ upper triangular matrices over a field $F$ of characteristic zero. Here we study the generalized polynomial identities of $UT_2$, i.e., identical relations holding for $UT_2$ regarded as $UT_2$-algebra. We determine a set of two generators of the $T_{UT_2}$-ideal of generalized polynomial identities of $UT_2$ and compute the exact values of the corresponding sequence of generalized codimensions. Moreover, we give a complete description of the space of multilinear generalized identities in $n$ variables in the language of Young diagrams through the representation theory of the symmetric group $S_n$. Finally, we prove that, unlike in the ordinary case, the generalized variety of $UT_2$-algebras generated by $UT_2$ has no almost polynomial growth; nevertheless, we exhibit two distinct generalized varieties of almost polynomial growth.

Abstract:We study the graded polynomial identities with a homogeneous involution on the algebra of upper triangular matrices endowed with a fine group grading. We compute their polynomial identities and a basis of the relatively free algebra, considering an arbitrary base field. We obtain the asymptotic behaviour of the codimension sequence when the characteristic of the base field is zero. As a consequence, we compute the exponent and the second exponent of the same algebra endowed with any group grading and any homogeneous involution.

Abstract:It is well known that an equivalence relation is invariant under the basic operations of an algebra if and only if it is invariant under the unary polynomials of the algebra. We show that a higher arity version of this property holds for a higher dimensional analogue of an equivalence relation. It follows that the hypercommutator of arity $n$ for an algebra is determined by its $n$-ary polynomials. We construct examples to show that this fails for every arity of the term condition higher commutator.

A q-analogue of graph independence polynomials with a group-theoretic interpretation

Abstract:We define totally-isotropic polynomials of alternating matrix spaces over finite fields, by analogy with independence polynomials of graphs. Our main result shows that totally-isotropic polynomials of graphical alternating matrix spaces give rise to a natural q-analogue of graph independence polynomials. For p-groups of class 2 and exponent p, this family of polynomials over fields of order p can be naturally interpreted as enumerating their abelian subgroups containing the commutator subgroup according to the orders. With this interpretation, our main result has implications to graphical groups over finite fields, in the same spirit as the results in (Bull. Lond. Math. Soc., 2022) by Rossmann, who studied enumerating conjugacy classes of graphical groups over finite fields.

Abstract:We prove that any lower triangular and totally nonnegative matrix whose diagonal entries are all equal to one gives rise to a family real-rooted polynomials. This is used to develop a general theory for proving that chain polynomials of rank uniform posets are real-rooted. The results obtained extend and unify results of the first author, Brenti, Welker and Athanasiadis. In the process we define a notion of $h$-vectors for a large class of posets which generalize the $h$-vectors commonly associated to simplicial and cubical complexes. This answers a question of Alder on defining a $h$-vectors for $q$-posets. A consequence of our methods is a characterization of the convex hull of all characteristic polynomials of hyperplane arrangements of fixed dimension and over a fixed finite field. This may be seen as a refinement of the critical problem of Crapo and Rota. We also use the methods developed to answer an open problem posed by Forgács and Tran on the real-rootedness of polynomials arising from certain bivariate rational functions.

Abstract:Let $X$ be a variety (possibly non-complete or singular) over a finitely generated field $k$ of characteristic $0$. For a prime number $\ell$, let $\rho_\ell$ be the Galois representation on the first $\ell$-adic cohomology of $X$. We show that if $\ell$ varies the image of $\rho_\ell$ is of bounded index in the group of $\mathbb{Z}_\ell$-points of its Zariski closure. We use this to improve a recent result of Litt about arithmetic representations of geometric fundamental groups. Litt's result says that there exist constants $N = N(X,\ell)$ such that every arithmetic representation $\pi_1(X_{\bar{k}}) \to \mathrm{GL}_n(\mathbb{Z}_\ell)$ that is trivial modulo $\ell^N$ is unipotent. We show that these constants can in fact be chosen independently of $\ell$.

Abstract:We determine the image of the braid groups inside the Temperley-Lieb algebras, defined over finite field, in the semisimple case, and for suitably large (but controlable) order of the defining (quantum) parameter. We also prove that, under natural conditions on this parameter, the representations of the Hecke algebras over a finite field are unitary for the action of the braid groups.

Norm of matrix-valued polynomials in random unitaries and permutations

Abstract:We consider a non-commutative polynomial in several independent $N$-dimensional random unitary matrices, uniformly distributed over the unitary, orthogonal or symmetric groups, and assume that the coefficients are $n$-dimensional matrices. The main purpose of this paper is to study the operator norm of this random non-commutative polynomial. We compare it with its counterpart where the the random unitary matrices are replaced by the unitary generators of the free group von Neumann algebra. Our first result is that these two norms are overwhelmingly close to each other in the large $N$ limit, and this estimate is uniform over all matrix coefficients as long as $n \le\exp (N^\alpha)$ for some explicit $\alpha >0$. Such results had been obtained by very different techniques for various regimes, all falling in the category $n\ll N$. Our result provides a new proof of the Peterson-Thom conjecture. Our second result is a universal quantitative lower bound for the operator norm of polynomials in independent $N$-dimensional random unitary and permutation matrices with coefficients in an arbitrary $C^*$-algebra. A variant of this result for permutation matrices generalizes the Alon-Boppana lower bound in two directions. Firstly, it applies for arbitrary polynomials and not only linear polynomials, and secondly, it applies for coefficients of an arbitrary $C^*$-algebra with non-negative joint moments and not only for non-negative real numbers.

Non-commutative factorizations and finite-dimensional representations of free algebras

Abstract:A very first step to develop non-commutative algebraic geometry is the arithmetic of polynomials in non-commuting variables over a commutative field, that is, the study of elements in free associative algebras. This investigation is presented as a natural extension of the classical theory in one variable by using Leavitt algebras, which are localizations of free algebras with respect to the Gabriel topology defined by an ideal of codimension 1. In particular to any polynomial in n non-commuting variables with non-zero constant term we associate a finite-dimensional module over the free algebra of rank n, which turns out to be simple if and only if the polynomial is irreducible. This approach leads to new insights in the study of the factorization of polynomials into irreducible ones and other related topics, such as an algorithm to divide polynomials or to compute the greatest common divisor between them, or a description of similar polynomials. The case of polynomials with zero constant term reduces to an open question whether the intersection of nonunital subalgebras of codimension 1 in a free associative algebra is trivial, that is, 0.

Abstract:S. Frisch, showed that the integer-valued polynomials on upper triangular matrix ring IntTn(K)(Tn(D)):={f∈Tn(K)[x]|f(Tn(D))⊆Tn(D)} is a ring, where D is an integral domain with field of fractions K . Let R1⊆R2 be commutative rings with identity. In this paper, we study the set IntTn(R2)(Ω,Tn(R1)):={f∈Tn(R2)[x]|f(Ω)⊆Tn(R1)} for some subsets Ω⊆Tn(R1) . We generalize Frisch's result and show that IntTn(R2)(Tn(R1)):=IntTn(R2)(Tn(R1),Tn(R1)) is a ring. We state a lower bound for the Krull dimension of the integer-valued polynomials on upper triangular matrix rings. Finally, we state the concept of Skolem closure of an ideal of the integer-valued polynomials on upper triangular matrix rings and as a consequence, we obtain a classification of maximal ideals of the integer-valued polynomials on upper triangular matrix rings.

Abstract: In this paper, we will develop more character varieties for a finite group $G$ by generalizing original character theory of Frobenius to good partition algebras. In the view of this generalization theory, we will reformulate the refined McKay conjecture and part of Navarro' conjecture on degrees of irreducible characters into a new general conjecture in the form of equality of polynomials. We will define the Frobenius polynomial, degree polynomial and prove that the ordinary character table of $G$ is equivalent to the Frobenius polynomial of the center of $FG$. We find a new series of invariants $p_{ijl}$ for a finite group. As an application of this new invariants, we prove that the normal series of a finite pure perfect group is determined by the lengths of its conjugate classes.
Dimension-free matricial Nullstellensätze for noncommutative polynomials

Abstract:Hilbert's Nullstellensatz is one of the most fundamental correspondences between algebra and geometry, and has inspired a plethora of noncommutative analogs. In last two decades, there has been an increased interest in understanding vanishing sets of polynomials in several matrix variables without restricting the matrix size, prompted by developments in noncommutative function theory, control systems, operator algebras, and quantum information theory. The emerging results vary according to the interpretation of what vanishing means. For example, given a collection of noncommutative polynomials, one can consider all matrix tuples at which the values of these polynomials are all zero, singular, have common kernel, or have zero trace. This survey reviews Nullstellensätze for the above types of vanishing sets, and identifies their structural counterparts in the free algebra.

Abstract:We exhibit an explicit formula for the cardinality of solutions to a class of quadratic matrix equations over finite fields. We prove that the orbits of these solutions under the natural conjugation action of the general linear groups can be separated by classical conjugation invariants defined by characteristic polynomials. We also find a generating set for the vanishing ideal of these orbits.
