We investigate examples of two different types: the first one involves integral weight CM newforms, while the second one involves half-integral weight $\eta$-quotients associated with sums of squares and Hurwitz class numbers.

Abstract:Given a compact segment, $\beta$, of a cuspidal geodesic on the modular surface, we study the number of sign changes of cusp forms and Eisenstein series along $\beta$. We prove unconditionally a sharp lower bound for Eisenstein series along a full density set of spectral parameters. Conditioned on certain moment bounds, we extend this to all spectral parameters, and prove similar theorems for cusp forms. The arguments rely in part on the authors' mean square bounds [KKL24], and on removing the assumption of the Lindelöf hypothesis from recent work of Ki [Ki23].

Abstract:In this note we consider a question of Ono, concerning which spaces of classical modular forms can be generated by sums of $\eta$-quotients. We give some new examples of spaces of modular forms which can be generated as sums of $\eta$-quotients, and show that we can write all modular forms of level $\Gamma_0(N)$ as rational functions of $\eta$-products.

Abstract:We extend the axiomatization for detecting and quantifying sign changes of Meher and Murty to sequences of complex numbers. We further generalize this result when the sequence is comprised of the coefficients of an $L$-function. As immediate applications, we prove that there are sign changes in intervals within sequences of coefficients of GL(2) holomorphic cusp forms, GL(2) Maass forms, and GL(3) Maass forms. Building on previous works by the authors, we prove that there are sign changes in intervals within sequences of partial sums of coefficients of GL(2) holomorphic cusp forms and Maass forms.

Abstract:We attempt to compute expressions in terms of the Dedekind eta function for all weight 2 new cusp forms with level up to 100, using methods of Allen et. al. In cases where no expression exists, we raise the level instead of the weight, meaning our eta quotients are always holomorphic. Of the forms we examine, we find expressions for all but 4. We also present methods to find expressions with relatively few terms, and how these expressions can be used to demonstrate zeroes of modular forms.

Abstract:Let S(x; a_1/q_1, a_2/q_2)=∑'_mn≤ xcos(2π ma_1/q_1)sin(2π na_2/q_2) with x≥ q_1q_2, 1≤ a_i≤ q_i, and (a_i, q_i)=1 (i=1, 2). We study the sign changes of S(x; a_1/q_1, a_2/q_2), and prove that for a sufficiently large constant C, S(x; a_1/q_1, a_2/q_2) changes sign in the interval [T,T+C√(T)] for any large T. Meanwhile, we show that for a small constant c', there exist infinitely many subintervals of length c'√(T)log^-7T in [T,2T] where ± S(t; a_1/q_1, a_2/q_2)> c_5 (q_1q_2)^3/4t^1/4 always holds.
On the Real Zeroes of Half-integral Weight Hecke Cusp Forms

Abstract:We examine the distribution of zeroes of half-integral weight Hecke cusp forms on the manifold $\Gamma_0(4)\backslash\mathbb H$ near a cusp at infinity. In analogue of the Ghosh-Sarnak conjecture for classical holomorphic Hecke cusp forms, one expects that almost all of the zeroes sufficiently close to this cusp lie on two vertical geodesics $\Re(s)=-1/2$ and $\Re(s)=0$ as the weight tends to infinity. We show that for $\gg K^2/(\log K)^{3/2}$ of the half-integral weight Hecke cusp forms in the Kohnen plus subspace with weight bounded by a large constant $K$, the number of such "real" zeroes grows almost at the expected rate. We also obtain a weaker lower bound for the number of real zeroes that holds for a positive proportion of forms. One of the key ingredients is the asymptotic evaluation of averaged first and second moments of quadratic twists of modular $L$-functions.

Abstract:We study non-holomorphic modular forms built from iterated integrals of holomorphic modular forms for SL$(2,\mathbb Z)$ known as equivariant iterated Eisenstein integrals. A special subclass of them furnishes an equivalent description of the modular graph forms appearing in the low-energy expansion of string amplitudes at genus one. Notably the Fourier expansion of modular graph forms contains single-valued multiple zeta values. We deduce the appearance of products and higher-depth instances of multiple zeta values in equivariant iterated Eisenstein integrals, and ultimately modular graph forms, from the appearance of simpler odd Riemann zeta values. This analysis relies on so-called zeta generators which act on certain non-commutative variables in the generating series of the iterated integrals. From an extension of these non-commutative variables we incorporate iterated integrals involving holomorphic cusp forms into our setup and use them to construct the modular completion of triple Eisenstein integrals. Our work represents a fully explicit realisation of the modular graph forms within Brown's framework of equivariant iterated Eisenstein integrals and reveals structural analogies between single-valued period functions appearing in genus zero and one string amplitudes.

Abstract:We work out the exact relationship between algebraic modular forms for a two-by-two general unitary group over a definite quaternion algebra, and those arising from genera of positive-definite quinary lattices, relating stabilisers of local lattices with specific open compact subgroups, paramodular at split places, and with Atkin-Lehner operators. Combining this with the recent work of Rösner and Weissauer, proving conjectures of Ibukiyama on Jacquet-Langlands type correspondences (mildly generalised here), provides an effective tool for computing Hecke eigenvalues for Siegel modular forms of degree two and paramodular level. It also enables us to prove examples of congruences of Hecke eigenvalues connecting Siegel modular forms of degrees two and one. These include some of a type conjectured by Harder at level one, supported by computations of Fretwell at higher levels, and a subtly different congruence discovered experimentally by Buzzard and Golyshev.

Abstract:Siegel defined zeta functions associated with indefinite quadratic forms, and proved their analytic properties such as analytic continuations and functional equations. Coefficients of these zeta functions are called measures of representations, and play an important role in the arithmetic theory of quadratic forms. In a 1938 paper, Siegel made a comment to the effect that the modularity of his zeta functions would be proved with the help of a suitable converse theorem. In the present paper, we accomplish Siegel's original plan by using a Weil-type converse theorem for Maass forms, which has appeared recently. It is also shown that "half" of Siegel's zeta functions correspond to holomorphic modular forms.

Abstract:By comparing two different evaluations of a modified (à la Borcherds) higher Siegel theta lift on even lattices of signature $(r,s)$, we prove Eichler--Selberg type relations for a wide class of negative weight vector-valued mock modular forms. In doing so, we detail several properties of the lift, as well as showing that it produces an infinite family of local (and locally harmonic) Maaß forms on Grassmanians in certain signatures.

Abstract:We prove that the Kloosterman sum $\text{Kl}(1,q)$ changes sign infinitely many times, as $q\rightarrow +\infty$ with at most two prime factors. As a consequence, our result is unconditional compared with Drappeau and Maynard's (Proc. Amer. Math. Soc., 2019), in which the existence of Laudau-Siegel zeros is required. Our arguments contain the Selberg sieve method, spectral theory and distribution of Kloosterman sums along with previous works by Fouvry, Matomäki, Michel, Sivak-Fischler, and Xi.

Sign involutions on para-abelian varieties

Abstract:We study the so-called sign involutions on twisted forms of abelian varieties, and show that such a sign involution exists if and only if the class in the Weil--Châtelet group is annihilated by two. If these equivalent conditions hold, we prove that the Picard scheme of the quotient is étale and contains no points of finite order. In dimension one, such quotients are Brauer--Severi curves, and we analyze the ensuing embeddings of the genus-one curve into twisted forms of Hirzebruch surfaces and weighted projective spaces.
