Abstract:The author presents an alternate proof of the Bismut-Zhang localization formula of ηinvariants, when the target manifold is a sphere, by using ideas of mod k index theory instead of the difficult analytic localization techniques of Bismut-Lebeau. As a consequence, it is shown that the R/Z part of the analytically defined ηinvariant of Atiyah-Patodi-Singer for a Dirac operator on an odd dimensional closed spin manifold can be expressed purely geometrically through a stable Chern-Simons current on a higher dimensional sphere. As a preliminary application, the author discusses the relation with the Atiyah-Patodi-Singer R/Z index theorem for unitary flat vector bundles, and proves an R refinement in the case where the Dirac operator is replaced by the Signature operator.

Abstract:In this article, we study several closely related invariants associated to Dirac operators on odd-dimensional manifolds with boundary with an action of the compact group $H$ of isometries. In particular, the equality between equivariant winding numbers, equivariant spectral flow, and equivariant Maslov indices is established. We also study equivariant $\eta$-invariants which play a fundamental role in the equivariant analog of Getzler's spectral flow formula. As a consequence, we establish a relation between equivariant $\eta$-invariants and equivariant Maslov triple indices in the splitting of manifolds.

Relative eta invariant and uniformly positive scalar curvature on non-compact manifolds

Abstract:On complete non-compact manifolds with bounded sectional curvature, we consider a class of self-adjoint Dirac-type operators called Dirac-Schrödinger operators. Assuming two Dirac-Schrödinger operators coincide at infinity, by previous work, one can define their relative eta invariant. A typical example of Dirac-Schrödinger operators is the (twisted) spin Dirac operators on spin manifolds which admit a Riemannian metric of uniformly positive scalar curvature. In this case, using the relative eta invariant, we get a geometric formula for the spectral flow on non-compact manifolds, which induces a new proof of Gromov-Lawson's result about compact area enlargeable manifolds in odd dimensions. When two such spin Dirac operators are the boundary restriction of an operator on a manifold with non-compact boundary, under certain conditions, we obtain an index formula involving the relative eta invariant. This generalizes the Atiyah-Patodi-Singer index theorem to non-compact boundary situation. As a result, we can use the relative eta invariant to study the space of uniformly positive scalar curvature metrics on some non-compact connected sums.

Abstract:It is well-known that the classical Gauss-Bonnet-Chern theorem [C] can be interpreted as an index theorem for de Rham-Hodge operators (cf. [BGV] and [LM]) and that it is nontrivial only for even dimensional manifolds. This paper arose from an attempt to search an odd dimensional analogue of this index theorem. Recall that the Gauss-Bonnet-Chern theorem is closely related to the famous Poincare-Hopf index formula expressing the Euler number as the sum of indices of singularities of a tangent vector field. Now for odd dimensional manifolds, or more generally for manifolds with vanishing Euler number, we take the advantage that another result of Hopf asserts that there always exist nowhere zero vector fields (see e.g. Steenrod [S]). Thus let M be an odd dimensional oriented closed manifold and let V be a nowhere zero vector field on M . Let γ be the one dimensional oriented vector bundle over M generated by V . Then TM/γ carries a canonically induced orientation. Let e(TM/γ) be the Euler class of TM/γ. For any integral element ω in H1(M,Q), we will take 〈ωe(TM/γ), [M ]〉 as our substitute for the Euler class appeared in the Gauss-Bonnet-Chern theorem. The main result of this paper gives an analytic formula for this number as the index of certain elliptic Toeplitz operators. In fact, a general odd index theory has already been developed by BaumDouglas [BD] who pointed out that the associated index can be computed

Abstract:The Dirac APS eta invariant on a Berger sphere of dimension $2n-1$ is discovered, numerically, to coincide, up to spin factors, with the Dirac conformal anomaly on a round sphere of even dimension, $n$. The analytical expression, given in terms of a generalised Bernoulli polynomial, is shown to equal a known conjecture for the eta invariant. Weingart's generating function is also obtained with no extra work.

Abstract:The eta invariant appears regularly in index theorems but is known to be directly computable from the spectrum only in certain examples of locally symmetric spaces of compact type. In this work, we derive some general formulas useful for calculating the eta invariant on closed manifolds. Specifically, we study the eta invariant on nilmanifolds by decomposing the spin Dirac operator using Kirillov theory. In particular, for general Heisenberg three-manifolds, the spectrum of the Dirac operator and the eta invariant are computed in terms of the metric, lattice, and spin structure data. There are continuous families of geometrically, spectrally different Heisenberg three-manifolds whose Dirac operators have constant eta invariant. In the appendix, some needed results of L. Richardson and C. C. Moore are extended from spaces of functions to spaces of spinors.

Abstract:Let $\Gamma$ be a discrete finitely generated group. Let $\hat{M}\to T$ be a $\Gamma$-equivariant fibration, with fibers diffeomorphic to a fixed even dimensional manifold with boundary $Z$. We assume that $\Gamma\to \hat{M}\to \hat{M}/\Gamma$ is a Galois covering of a compact manifold with boundary. Let $(D^+ (\theta))_{\theta\in T}$ be a $\Gamma$-equivariant family of Dirac-type operators. Under the assumption that the boundary family is $L^2$-invertible, we define an index class in the K-theory of the cross-product algebra, $K_0 (C^0 (T)\rtimes_r \Gamma)$. If, in addition, $\Gamma$ is of polynomial growth, we define higher indeces by pairing the index class with suitable cyclic cocycles. Our main result is then a formula for these higher indeces: the structure of the formula is as in the seminal work of Atiyah, Patodi and Singer, with an interior geometric contribution and a boundary contribution in the form of a higher eta invariant associated to the boundary family. Under similar assumptions we extend our theorem to any $G$-proper manifold, with $G$ an étale groupoid. We employ this generalization in order to establish a higher Atiyah-Patodi-Singer index formula on certain foliations with boundary. Fundamental to our work is a suitable generalization of Melrose $b$-pseudodifferential calculus as well as the superconnection proof of the index theorem on $G$-proper manifolds recently given by Gorokhovsky and Lott.

Abstract:In the first part of this series, we defined an equivariant index without assuming the group acting or the orbit space of the action to be compact. This allowed us to generalise an index of deformed Dirac operators, defined for compact groups by Braverman. In this paper, we investigate properties and applications of this index. We prove that it has an induction property that can be used to deduce various other properties of the index. In the case of compact orbit spaces, we show how it is related to the analytic assembly map from the Baum-Connes conjecture, and an index used by Mathai and Zhang. We use the index to define a notion of K-homological Dirac induction, and show that, under conditions, it satisfies the quantisation commutes with reduction principle.

Abstract:In this paper we establish a formula, expressing the generalized Atiyah-Patodi-Singer index in terms of eta invariants of domain-wall massive Dirac operators, without assuming that the Dirac operator on the boundary is invertible. Compared with the original Atiyah-Patodi-Singer index theorem, this formula has the advantage that no global spectral projection boundary conditions appear. Our main tool is an asymptotic gluing formula for eta invariants proved by using a splitting principle developed by Douglas and Wojciechowski in adiabatic limit. The eta invariant splits into a contribution from the interior, one from the boundary, and an error term vanishing in the adiabatic limit process.

Abstract:In this paper, we introduce several new secondary invariants for Dirac operators on a complete Riemannian manifold with a uniform positive scalar curvature metric outside a compact set and use these secondary invariants to establish a higher index theorem for the Dirac operators. Abstract:In this paper, we define a relative equivariant coarse index for proper actions and a relative L-2-index. We derive a relative equivariant coarse index theorem connecting the relative equivariant coarse index with the localized equivariant coarse index. Furthermore, we present a calculation formula on the relative L-2-index and provide a relative L-2-index theorem.
