We give a complete answer, thereby delimiting the generalizations of Gödel's second incompleteness theorem that hold within second-order arithmetic.

Abstract:We first partly develop a mathematical notion of stable consistency intended to reflect the actual consistency property of human beings. Then we give a generalization of the first and second Gödel incompleteness theorem to stably $1,2$-consistent formal systems. Our argument in particular re-proves the original incompleteness theorems from first principles, using Turing machine language to (computably) construct our "Gödel sentence" directly, in particular we do not use the diagonal lemma, nor any meta-logic, with the proof naturally formalizable in set theory. In practice such a stably consistent formal system could be meant to represent the mathematical output of humanity evolving in time, so that the above gives a formalization of a famous disjunction of Gödel, obstructing computability of intelligence.

Abstract:Our main result (Theorem A) shows the incompleteness of any consistent sequential theory T T formulated in a finite language such that T T is axiomatized by a collection of sentences of bounded quantifier-alternation-depth. Our proof employs an appropriate reduction mechanism to rule out the possibility of completeness by simply invoking Tarski's Undefinability of Truth theorem. We also use the proof strategy of Theorem A to obtain other incompleteness results.

Abstract:Given a sound first-order p-time theory $T$ capable of formalizing syntax of first-order logic we define a p-time function $g_T$ that stretches all inputs by one bit and we use its properties to show that $T$ must be incomplete. We leave it as an open problem whether for some $T$ the range of $g_T$ intersects all infinite NP sets (i.e. whether it is a proof complexity generator hard for all proof systems). A propositional version of the construction shows that at least one of the following three statements is true: - there is no p-optimal propositional proof system (this is equivalent to the non-existence of a time-optimal propositional proof search algorithm), - $E \not\subseteq P/poly$, - there exists function $h$ that stretches all inputs by one bit, is computable in sub-exponential time and its range $Rng(h)$ intersects all infinite NP sets.

A common Misconception about the Categorical Arithmetic

Abstract:Although the categorical arithmetic is not effectively axiomatizable, the belief that the incompleteness Theorems can be apply to it is fairly common. Furthermore, the so-called "essential" (or "inherent") semantic incompleteness of the second-order Logic that can be deduced by these same Theorems does not imply the standard semantic incompleteness that can be derived using the Loewenheim-Skolem or the compactness Theorem. This state of affairs has its origins in an incorrect and misinterpreted Goedel's comment at the Koenigsberg congress of 1930 and has consolidated due to different circumstances. This paper aims to clear up these questions and proposes an alternative interpretation for the Goedel's statement.

Abstract:After highlighting the cases in which the semantics of a language cannot be mechanically reproduced (in which case it is called inherent), the main epistemological consequences of the first incompleteness Theorem for the two fundamental arithmetical theories are shown: the non-mechanizability for the truths of the first-order arithmetic and the peculiarities for the model of the second-order arithmetic. Finally, the common epistemological interpretation of the second incompleteness Theorem is corrected, proposing the new "Metatheorem of undemonstrability of internal consistency".

Abstract:Assume that the problem P0 is not solvable in polynomial time. Let T be a first-order theory containing a sufficiently rich part of true arithmetic. We characterize T∪{ConT} as the minimal extension of T proving for some algorithm that it decides P0 as fast as any algorithm B with the property that T proves that B decides P0. Here, ConT claims the consistency of T. As a byproduct, we obtain a version of Gödelʼs Second Incompleteness Theorem. Moreover, we characterize problems with an optimal algorithm in terms of arithmetical theories.

Abstract:We give an analysis and generalizations of some long-established constructive completeness results in terms of categorical logic and pre-sheaf and sheaf semantics. The purpose is in no small part conceptual and organizational: from a few basic ingredients arises a more unified picture connecting constructive completeness with respect to Tarski semantics, to the extent that it is available, with various completeness theorems in terms of presheaf and sheaf semantics (and thus with Kripke and Beth semantics). From this picture are obtained both ("reverse mathematical") equivalence results and new constructive completeness theorems; in particular, the basic set-up is flexible enough to obtain strong constructive completeness results for languages of arbitrary size and languages for which equality between the elements of the signature is not decidable.

The first is to reveal what Gödel actually proved to provide a clear and solid foundation upon which to base future research. The second is to construct a coherent explication of Gödel's proof that is not only approachable by the non-specialist, but also brings to light the core principles underlying Gödel's proof.

Abstract:The definitional equality of an intensional type theory is its test of type compatibility. Today's systems rely on ordinary evaluation semantics to compare expressions in types, frustrating users with type errors arising when evaluation fails to identify two `obviously' equal terms. If only the machine could decide a richer theory! We propose a way to decide theories which supplement evaluation with `$\nu$-rules', rearranging the neutral parts of normal forms, and report a successful initial experiment. We study a simple -calculus with primitive fold, map and append operations on lists and develop in Agda a sound and complete decision procedure for an equational theory enriched with monoid, functor and fusion laws.

Abstract:Abstract In this paper, we examine the limit of applicability of Gödel’s first incompleteness theorem ( $\textsf {G1}$ for short). We first define the notion “ $\textsf {G1}$ holds for the theory $T$ ”. This paper is motivated by the following question: can we find a theory with a minimal degree of interpretation for which $\textsf {G1}$ holds. To approach this question, we first examine the following question: is there a theory T such that Robinson’s $\mathbf {R}$ interprets T but T does not interpret $\mathbf {R}$ (i.e., T is weaker than $\mathbf {R}$ w.r.t. interpretation) and $\textsf {G1}$ holds for T ? In this paper, we show that there are many such theories based on Jeřábek’s work using some model theory. We prove that for each recursively inseparable pair $\langle A,B\rangle $ , we can construct a r.e. theory $U_{\langle A,B\rangle }$ such that $U_{\langle A,B\rangle }$ is weaker than $\mathbf {R}$ w.r.t. interpretation and $\textsf {G1}$ holds for $U_{\langle A,B\rangle }$ . As a corollary, we answer a question from Albert Visser. Moreover, we prove that for any Turing degree $\mathbf {0}< \mathbf {d}<\mathbf {0}^{\prime }$ , there is a theory T with Turing degree $\mathbf {d}$ such that $\textsf {G1}$ holds for T and T is weaker than $\mathbf {R}$ w.r.t. Turing reducibility. As a corollary, based on Shoenfield’s work using some recursion theory, we show that there is no theory with a minimal degree of Turing reducibility for which $\textsf {G1}$ holds.
Some reflections on the relationship between logical incompleteness and concrete incompleteness

Abstract:In this paper, we aim to conceptually examine the relationship between logical incompleteness and concrete incompleteness which both study the incompleteness phenomenon. We argue for two main theses. Firstly, the current research on concrete incompleteness reals both similarities and differences between logical incompleteness and concrete incompleteness. Similarities between them are not universal, and differences between them are essential. Secondly, concrete incompleteness is a higher order phenomenon over logical incompleteness. This verifies that Hilbert's concrete and intuitive proof theory provides us essential new information from non-concrete and non-intuitive ideal proofs. We examine similarities between logical incompleteness and concrete incompleteness from two aspects: equivalences between logical incompleteness and concrete incompleteness, and the ubiquity of the incompleteness phenomenon in both logical incompleteness and concrete incompleteness. We examine differences between logical incompleteness and concrete incompleteness from five aspects: (1) the influence on Hilbert's program; (2) properties of independent sentences; (3) the intensionality problem; (4) the relationship with ordinal analysis; (5) the limit of provability.

A topological approach to undefinability in algebraic extensions of $\mathbb{Q}$

Abstract:For any subset $Z \subseteq \mathbb{Q}$, consider the set $S_Z$ of subfields $L\subseteq \overline{\mathbb{Q}}$ which contain a co-infinite subset $C \subseteq L$ that is universally definable in $L$ such that $C \cap \mathbb{Q}=Z$. Placing a natural topology on the set $\text{Sub}(\overline{\mathbb{Q}})$ of subfields of $\overline{\mathbb{Q}}$, we show that if $Z$ is not thin in $\mathbb{Q}$, then $S_Z$ is meager in $\text{Sub}(\overline{\mathbb{Q}})$. Here, thin and meager both mean "small", in terms of arithmetic geometry and topology, respectively. For example, this implies that only a meager set of fields $L$ have the property that the ring of algebraic integers $\mathcal{O}_L$ is universally definable in $L$. The main tools are Hilbert's Irreducibility Theorem and a new normal form theorem for existential definitions. The normal form theorem, which may be of independent interest, says roughly that every $\exists$-definable subset of an algebraic extension of $\mathbb Q$ is a finite union of single points and projections of hypersurfaces defined by absolutely irreducible polynomials.

Some General Completeness Results for Propositionally Quantified Modal Logics

Abstract:We study the completeness problem for propositionally quantified modal logics on quantifiable general frames, where the admissible sets are the propositions the quantifiers can range over and expressible sets of worlds are admissible, and Kripke frames, where the quantifiers range over all sets of worlds. We show that any normal propositionally quantified modal logic containing all instances of the Barcan scheme is strongly complete with respect to the class of quantifiable general frames validating it. We also provide a sufficient condition for the truth of all formulas, possibly with quantifiers, to be preserved under passing from a quantifiable general frame to its underlying Kripke frame. This is reminiscent of both the idea of elementary submodel in model theory and the persistence concepts in propositional modal logic. The key to this condition is the concept of finite diversity (Fritz 2023), and with it, we show that if $\Theta$ is a set of Sahlqvist formulas whose class of Kripke frames has finite diversity, then the smallest normal propositionally quantified modal logic containing $\Theta$, Barcan, a formula stating the existence of world propositions, and a formula stating the definability of successor sets, is Kripke complete. As a special case, we have a simple finite axiomatization of the logic of Euclidean Kripke frames.

Abstract:We define instantiational and algorithmic completeness for a formal language. We show that, in the presence of Church's Thesis, an alternative interpretation of Goedelian incompleteness is that Peano Arithmetic is instantiationally complete, but algorithmically incomplete. We then postulate a Provability Thesis that links Peano Arithmetic and effective algorithmic computability, just as Church's Thesis links Recursive Arithmetic and effective instantiational computability.

Abstract:We develop a systematic algorithmic framework that unites global and local classification problems using index sets. We prove that the classification problem for continuous (binary) regular functions among almost everywhere linear, pointwise linear-time Lipschitz functions is $\Sigma^0_2$-complete. We show that a function $f\colon [0,1] \rightarrow \mathbb{R}$ is (binary) transducer if and only if it is continuous regular. As one of many consequences, our $\Sigma^0_2$-completeness result covers the class of transducer functions as well. Finally, we show that the Banach space $C[0,1]$ of real-valued continuous functions admits an arithmetical classification among separable Banach spaces. Our proofs combine methods of abstract computability theory, automata theory, and functional analysis.

Abstract:We prove two completeness results for Kleene algebra with tests and a top element, with respect to guarded string languages and binary relations. While the equational theories of those two classes of models coincide over the signature of Kleene algebra, this is no longer the case when we consider an additional constant ``top'' for the full element. Indeed, the full relation satisfies more laws than the full language, and we show that those additional laws can all be derived from a single additional axiom. We recover that the two equational theories coincide if we slightly generalise the notion of relational model, allowing sub-algebras of relations where top is a greatest element but not necessarily the full relation. We use models of closed languages and reductions in order to prove our completeness results, which are relative to any axiomatisation of the algebra of regular events. For one of our constructions, we extend the concept of finite monoid recognisability to guarded-string languages; this device makes it possible to obtain a PSpace algorithm for the equational theory of binary relations.

Abstract:The main goal of this project is to prove the equivalency of several characterizations of completeness of Archimedean ordered fields; some of which appear in most modern literature as theorems following from the Dedekind completeness of the real numbers, while a couple are not as well known and have to do with other areas of mathematics, such as nonstandard analysis. Continuing, we study the completeness of non-Archimedean fields, and provide several examples of such fields with varying degrees of properties, using nonstandard analysis to produce some relatively "nice" (in particular, they are Cantor complete) final examples. As a small detour, we present a short construction of the real numbers using methods from nonstandard analysis.

Axiomatic theories of supervaluational truth: completing the picture

Abstract:Supervaluational fixed-point theories of formal truth aim to amend an important shortcoming of fixed-point theories based on the Strong Kleene logic, namely, accounting for the truth of classical validities. In a celebrated paper, Andrea Cantini proposed an axiomatization of one such supervaluational theory of truth, which he called VF, and which proved to be incredibly strong proof-theoretically speaking. However, VF only axiomatizes one in a collection of several supervaluational schemes, namely the scheme which requires truth to be consistent. In this paper, we provide axiomatic theories for the remaining supervaluational schemes, labelling these systems VF$^-$ (for the theory which drops the consistency requirement), and VFM (for the theory which requires not only consistency but also completeness, i.e., maximal consistency). We then carry out proof-theoretic analyses of both theories. Our results show that VF$^-$ is as strong as VF, but that VFM's strength decreases significantly, being only as strong as the well-known theory KF. Furthermore, we introduce and analyse proof-theoretically two variants of these theories: the schematic extension, in the sense of Feferman, of VFM; and a theory in-between VFM and VF, that we call VFW, and which drops the assumption of maximal consistency. The former is shown to match the strength of predicative analysis; for the latter, we show its proof-theoretical equivalence with ramified analysis up to the ordinal $\varphi_20$, thus standing halfway between VFM and VF.
