Abstract:A word in a group is called a test element if any endomorphism fixing it is necessarily an automorphism. In this note, we give a sufficient condition in geometry to construct test elements for monomorphisms of a free group, by using the Whitehead graph and the action of the free group on its Cayley graph.

Abstract:Let $G$ be a group. An element $g \in G$ is called a test element of $G$ if for every endomorphism $\varphi:G \to G$, $\varphi(g)=g$ implies that $\varphi$ is an automorphism. We prove that for a finitely generated profinite group $G$, $g \in G$ is a test element of $G$ if and only if it is not contained in a proper retract of $G$. Using this result we prove that an endomorphism of a free pro-$p$ group of finite rank which preserves an automorphic orbit of a non-trivial element must be an automorphism. We give numerous explicit examples of test elements in free pro-$p$ groups and Demushkin groups. By relating test elements in finitely generated residually finite-$p$ Turner groups to test elements in their pro-$p$ completions, we provide new examples of test elements in free discrete groups and surface groups. Moreover, we prove that the set of test elements of a free discrete group of finite rank is dense in the profinite topology.

Abstract:The question of whether two words in a free group that induce the same measure on every finite group as word maps are automorphic remains open. In this work, we study words whose images as word maps on every finite group are identical. We establish that two words in $F_2$, where one of the words is $x^n$ or $[x,y]^n$ for $n \in \Z$, having same image on every finite group, are endomorphic to each other. Furthermore, we demonstrate that if the word map corresponding to a word $w_1 \in F_n$ has the same image as a test word $w_2 \in F_n$ on every finite group, then this is sufficient to ensure that $w_1$ and $w_2$ induce the same measure on every finite group.

Abstract:Given a finite group G, two elements are ≡ m -related if they lie in exactly the same maximal subgroups of G. This equivalence relation was introduced by P. J. Cameron, A. Lucchini and C. M. Roney-Dougal to understand better the generated set for finite groups. We study the relation ≡ m in a conjugacy class of G and determine sufficient conditions to ensure that such conjugacy class is contained in the Fitting subgroup F(G) of G. If G is soluble and x, y are two ≡ m -related elements of G such that (|xG |, |yG |) = 1, we prove that they lie in F(G).

Abstract:Let k be an algebraically closed field of positive characteristic and G a simple algebraic group defined over k. Under the assumption that the characteristic is a good prime for G, we determine a maximal G-stable subvariety U' of the variety of unipotent elements of G such that for all u in U' any two A1-subgroups of G containing u are G-conjugate. This result establishes to what degree an analogue of the Jacobson-Morozov theorem for Lie algebras is valid for simple algebraic groups defined over fields of (good) positive characteristic

Abstract:Let G be a finite nonabelian simple group and let Gamma be a connected undirected Cayley graph for G. The possible structures for the full automorphism group AutGamma are specified. Then, for certain finite simple groups G, a sufficient condition is given under which G is a normal subgroup of AutGamma. Finally, as an application of these results, several new half-transitive graphs are constructed. Some of these involve the sporadic simple groups G J(1), J(4), Ly and BM, while others fall into two infinite families and involve the Ree simple groups and alternating groups. The two infinite families contain examples of half-transitive graphs of arbitrarily large valency.

Abstract:Indices of fixed point classes play a central role in Nielsen fixed point theory. Jiang-Wang-Zhang proved that for selfmaps of graphs and surfaces, the index of any fixed point class has an upper bound called its characteristic. In this paper, we study the difference between the index and the characteristic for selfmaps of graphs. First, for free groups, we extend attracting fixed words at infinity of automorphisms into that of injective endomorphisms. Then, by using relative train track technique, we show that the difference mentioned above is quite likely to be the number of equivalence classes of attracting fixed words of the endomorphism induced on the fundamental group. Since both of attracting fixed words and the existed characteristic are totally determined by endomorphisms themselves, we give a new algebraic approach to estimate indices of fixed point classes of graph selfmaps. As consequence, we obtain an upper bound for attracting fixed words of injective endomorphisms of free groups, generalizing the one for automorphisms due to Gaboriau-Jaeger-Levitt-Lustig. Furthermore, we give a simple approach to roughly detecting whether fixed words exist or not.

Abstract:Finite groups are ubiquitous in mathematics and often arise as symmetry groups of objects. Consequently, finite group structure is of great interest. The transfer is a classical homomorphism of any finite group G into certain commutative sections of G . It has several basic applications in and has inspired new developments in finite group structure. In this article, we present a new characterization of the image of the transfer. Then we obtain new consequences and immediate proofs of old transfer consequences in finite group structure.

Abstract:In this note we give a new proof of the fact that an elementary subgroup (in the sense of first-order theory) of a non abelian free group $\mathbb{F}$ must be a free factor. The proof is based on definability of orbits of elements of under automorphisms of $\mathbb{F}$ fixing a large enough subset of $\mathbb{F}$.

Abstract:Fully commutative elements in types $B$ and $D$ are completely characterized and counted by Stembridge. Recently, Feinberg-Kim-Lee-Oh have extended the study of fully commutative elements from Coxeter groups to the complex setting, giving an enumeration of such elements in $G(m,1,n)$. In this note, we prove a connection between fully commutative elements in $B_n$ and in $G(m,1,n)$, which allows us to characterize fully commutative elements in $G(m,1,n )$ by pattern avoidance. Further, we present a counting formula for such elements in $G(m,1,n)$.

Abstract:A square-free word is one which does not contain two consecutive occurrences of the same factor; a square-free morphism is one which produces a square-free word whenever applied to a square-free word. For testing square-freeness of a morphism, the previous researches (Berstel, Ehrenfeucht-Rozenberg, Crochemore, Hsiao et al., ...) dealt with the compactness claim: they proved that there is a bound (sometimes tight, depending on the morphism) such that a morphism is square-free if it is so on the words on the source alphabet of length up to this bound. In particular, when the morphism is ternary (the source alphabet of three letters) this bound is universally 5 and 5 is sharp on the target alphabet of 5 letters. In this paper we undertake a different approach: we do not search for any compactness bound or verify square-freeness excerpt for a few prerequisites; instead we define the relator on the source alphabet, the existence of which is relatively easy to verify by matching words for a common factor. As applications, we easily deduce all the previous bounds and we manifest the simplicity of performance by giving a short proof of a Lallement's result. More essentially, using it we show the optimum bound 5 for the ternary morphism on the alphabet of 4 letters and, by a more elaborate construction, on the alphabet of 3 letters. That gives the current problem the finishing touches.

Abstract:This paper investigates the automorphism group of a connected and undirected G-symmetric graph Γ where G is an almost simple group with socle T. First we prove that, for an arbitrary subgroup M of AutΓ containing G, either T is normal in M or T is a subgroup of the alternating group Ak of degree k=|Mα:Tα|−|NM(T):T|. Then we describe the structure of the full automorphism group of G-locally primitive graphs of valency d, where d≤20 or is a prime. Abstract:We show that any non abelian free group $\F$ is strongly $\aleph_0$-homogeneous, i.e. that finite tuples of elements which satisfy the same first-order properties are in the same orbit under $\Aut(\F)$. We give a characterization of elements in finitely generated groups which have the same first-order properties as a primitive element of the free group. We deduce as a consequence that most hyperbolic surface groups are not $\aleph_0$-homogeneous.
