Abstract:In this short note, we derive an upper-bound for the sum of two comparison functions, namely for the sum of a class K and an extended class K function. To the best of our knowledge, the relations derived in this note have not been previously derived in the literature.

On general sums involving the floor function with applications to $k$-free numbers

Abstract:In this paper, we consider sums related the floor function. We can improve some previous results for some special arithmetic functions considered by Bordellés [3], Stucky[9] and Liu-Wu-Yang [6]. We can also give a refined result for previous results for general function considered by Bordellés, Dai, Heyman, Pan and Shparlinski [1] and Wu [11].

Abstract:We present an elementary uniform lower bound for the classical Kloosterman sum $S(a,b;c)$ where $(ab,c)=1$ and $c$ is an odd integer. We apply this lower bound for Kloosterman sums to derive an explicit lower bound in the Petersson's trace formula, subject to a given condition. Consequently, we achieve a modified version of a theorem by Jung and Sardari, where weight $k$ and level $N$ are permitted to vary independently. Using this modified version, we get a conditional lower bound for the trace of the operator $(T_n)^t$ for integer $t>1$, where $T_n$ denotes the normalised Hecke operator for natural number $n$ with $(n,N)=1.$

Abstract:For any abelian function field K (i.e. any subfield of a cyclotomic function field L = k (Lambda(P)) over the rational function field k) with conductor being an irreducible polynomial over a finite field of odd characteristic, by studying the Carlitz-module structure and the character group of K, an explicit upper bound and a calculating formula of the relative divisor class number h(-) (K) of K are given. Our calculated results of K develop Rosen's recent results of L.

Abstract:In this note we find the optimal lower bound for the size of the sumsets $HA$ and $H\,\hat{}A$ over finite sets $H, A$ of nonnegative integers, where $HA = \bigcup_{h\in H} hA$ and $H\,\hat{}A = \bigcup_{h\in H} h\,\hat{}A$. We also find the underlying algebraic structure of the sets $A$ and $H$ for which the size of the sumsets $HA$ and $H\,\hat{}A$ is minimum.

Abstract:Given $A$ a set of $N$ positive integers, an old question in additive combinatorics asks that whether $A$ contains a sum-free subset of size at least $N/3+\omega(N)$ for some increasing unbounded function $\omega$. The question is generally attacked in the literature by considering another conjecture, which asserts that as $N\to\infty$, $\max_{x\in\mathbb{R}/\mathbb{Z}}\sum_{n\in A}({\bf 1}_{(1/3,2/3)}-1/3)(nx)\to\infty$. This conjecture, if true, would also imply that a similar phenomenon occurs for $(2k,4k)$-sum-free sets for every $k\geq1$. In this note, we prove the latter result directly. The new ingredient of our proof is a structural analysis on the host set $A$, which might be of independent interest.

Abstract: We show that a double character sum, appearing in the work of Conrey-Iwaniec and Petrow-Young on Weyl bound for certain $L$-functions, is essentially a hypergeometric sum introduced by Katz. This produces a simple proof of the upper bound for this sum.

Abstract:Sums of Kloosterman sums have deep connections with the theory of modular forms, and their estimation has many important consequences. Kuznetsov used his famous trace formula and got a power-saving estimate with respect to x with implied constants depending on m and n . Recently, in 2009, Sarnak and Tsimerman obtained a bound uniformly in x , m and n . The generalized Kloosterman sums are defined with multiplier systems and on congruence subgroups. Goldfeld and Sarnak bounded sums of them with main terms corresponding to exceptional eigenvalues of the hyperbolic Laplacian. Their error term is a power of x with implied constants depending on all the other factors. In this paper, for a wide class of half-integral weight multiplier systems, we get the same bound with the error term uniformly in x , m and n . Such uniform bounds have great applications. For the eta-multiplier, Ahlgren and Andersen obtained a uniform and power-saving bound with respect to m and n , which resulted in a convergent error estimate on the Rademacher exact formula of the partition function p ⁢ ( n ) . We also establish a Rademacher-type exact formula for the difference of partitions of rank modulo 3, which allows us to apply our power-saving estimate to the tail of the formula for a convergent error bound.

Abstract:We revisit the following problem, proposed by Kolmogorov: given prescribed marginal distributions $F$ and $G$ for random variables $X,Y$ respectively, characterize the set of compatible distribution functions for the sum $Z=X+Y$. Bounds on the distribution function for $Z$ were given by Markarov (1982), and Frank et al. (1987), the latter using copula theory. However, though they obtain the same bounds, they make different assertions concerning their sharpness. In addition, their solutions leave some open problems in the case when the given marginal distribution functions are discontinuous. These issues have led to some confusion and erroneous statements in subsequent literature, which we correct.

Abstract:We prove new bounds on bilinear forms with Kloosterman sums, complementing and improving a series of results by e. Fouvry, E. Kowalski and Ph. Michel (2014), V. Blomer, e. Fouvry, E. Kowalski, Ph. Michel and D. Milicevic (2017), E. Kowalski, Ph. Michel and W. Sawin (2019, 2020) and I. E. Shparlinski (2019). These improvements rely on new estimates for Type II bilinear forms with incomplete Kloosterman sums. We also establish new estimates for bilinear forms with one variable from an arbitrary set by introducing techniques from additive combinatorics over prime fields. Some of these bounds have found a crucial application in the recent work of Wu (2020) on asymptotic formulas for the fourth moments of Dirichlet L-functions. As new applications, an estimate for higher moments of averages of Kloosterman sums and the distribution of divisor function in a family of arithmetic progressions are also given.

Abstract:We establish a correspondence between inverse sumset theorems (which can be viewed as classifications of approximate (abelian) groups) and inverse theorems for the Gowers norms (which can be viewed as classifications of approximate polynomials). In particular, we show that the inverse sumset theorems of Freiman type are equivalent to the known inverse results for the Gowers U^3 norms, and moreover that the conjectured polynomial strengthening of the former is also equivalent to the polynomial strengthening of the latter. We establish this equivalence in two model settings, namely that of the finite field vector spaces F_2^n, and of the cyclic groups Z/NZ. In both cases the argument involves clarifying the structure of certain types of approximate homomorphism.

Abstract:We deduce Katz's theorems for $(A,B)$-exponential sums over finite fields using $\ell$-adic cohomology and a theorem of Denef-Loeser, removing the hypothesis that $A+B$ is relatively prime to the characteristic $p$. In some degenerate cases, the Betti number estimate is improved using toric decomposition and Adolphson-Sperber's bound for the degree of $L$-functions. Applying the facial decomposition theorem in \cite{W1}, we prove that the universal family of $(A,B)$-polynomials is generically ordinary for its $L$-function when $p$ is in certain arithmetic progression.

Abstract:Let $h \geq 2$, $k \geq 5$ be integers and $A$ be a nonempty finite set of $k$ integers. Very recently, Tang and Xing studied extended inverse theorems for $hk-h+1 < \left|hA\right| \leq hk+2h-3$. In this paper, we extend the work of Tang and Xing and study all possible inverse theorems for $hk-h+1<\left|hA\right| \leq hk+3h-4$. Furthermore, we give a range of $|hA|$ for which inverse problems are not possible.
