Abstract:Let $G$ be a graph and $H\colon V(G)\to 2^\mathbb{N}$a set function associated with $G$.A spanning subgraph $F$ of $G$ is called an $H$-factorif the degree of any vertex $v$ in $F$ belongs to the set $H(v)$.This paper contains two results on the existence of $H$-factors in regular graphs.First, we construct an $r$-regular graph without some given $H^*$-factor.In particular,this gives a negative answer to a problem recently posed by Akbari and Kano.Second, by using Lovász's characterization theoremon the existence of $(g, f)$-factors,we find a sharp condition for the existence of general $H$-factors in $\{r, r+1\}$-graphsin terms of the maximum and minimum of $H$.This result reduces to Thomassen's theoremfor the case that $H(v)$ consists of the same two consecutive integers for all vertices $v$and to Tutte's theorem if the graph is regular in addition.

Abstract:A recent result by Kardoš, Máčajová and Zerafa [J. Comb. Theory, Ser. B. 160 (2023) 1--14] related to the famous Berge-Fulkerson conjecture implies that given an arbitrary set of odd pairwise edge-disjoint cycles, say $\mathcal O$, in a bridgeless cubic graph, there exists a $1$-factor intersecting all cycles in $\mathcal O$ in at least one edge. This remarkable result opens up natural generalizations in the case of an $r$-regular graph $G$ and a $t$-factor $F$, with $r$ and $t$ being positive integers. In this paper, we start the study of this problem by proving necessary and sufficient conditions on $G$, $t$ and $r$ to assure the existence of a suitable $F$ for any possible choice of the set $\mathcal O$. First of all, we show that $G$ needs to be $2$-connected. Under this additional assumption, we highlight how the ratio $\frac{t}{r}$ seems to play a crucial role in assuring the existence of a $t$-factor $F$ with the required properties by proving that $\frac{t}{r} \geq \frac{1}{3}$ is a further necessary condition. We suspect that this condition is also sufficient, and we confirm it in the case $\frac{t}{r}=\frac{1}{3}$, generalizing the case $t=1$ and $r=3$ proved by Kardoš, Máčajová, Zerafa, and in the case $\frac{t}{r}=\frac{1}{2}$ with $t$ even. Finally, we provide further results in the case of cycles of arbitrary length.

Regular Factors of Regular Graphs from Eigenvalues

Abstract:Let $r$ and $m$ be two integers such that $r\geq m$. Let $H$ be a graph with order $|H|$, size $e$ and maximum degree $r$ such that $2e\geq |H|r-m$. We find a best lower bound on spectral radius of graph $H$ in terms of $m$ and $r$. Let $G$ be a connected $r$-regular graph of order $|G|$ and $ k < r$ be an integer. Using the previous results, we find some best upper bounds (in terms of $r$ and $k$) on the third largest eigenvalue that is sufficient to guarantee that $G$ has a $k$-factor when $k|G|$ is even. Moreover, we find a best bound on the second largest eigenvalue that is sufficient to guarantee that $G$ is $k$-critical when $k|G|$ is odd. Our results extend the work of Cioabă, Gregory and Haemers [J. Combin. Theory Ser. B, 1999] who obtained such results for 1-factors.

Abstract: Let $r$ be an odd integer, and $k$ an even integer. In this note, we present $r$-regular graphs which have no $\{k,r-k\}$-factors for all $1\le k\le {r\over2}-1$. This gives a negative answer to a problem posed by Akbari and Kano recently.

Abstract:A graph $G$ is pseudo 2--factor isomorphic if the parity of the number of cycles in a 2--factor is the same for all 2--factors of $G$. In \cite{ADJLS} we proved that pseudo 2--factor isomorphic $k$--regular bipartite graphs exist only for $k \le 3$. In this paper we generalize this result for regular graphs which are not necessarily bipartite. We also introduce strongly pseudo 2--factor isomorphic graphs and we prove that pseudo and strongly pseudo 2--factor isomorphic 2k--regular graphs and $k$--regular digraphs do not exist for $k\geq 4$. Moreover, we present constructions of infinite families of regular graphs in these classes. In particular we show that the family of Flower snarks is strongly pseudo 2--factor isomorphic but not 2--factor isomorphic and we conjecture that, together with the Petersen and the Blanuša2 graphs, they are the only cyclically 4--edge--connected snarks for which each 2--factor contains only cycles of odd length.

Eigenvalues and factors: a survey

Abstract:A factor of a graph is a spanning subgraph satisfying some given conditions. An earlier survey of factors can be traced back to the Akiyama and Kano [J. Graph Theory, 1985, 9: 1-42] in which they described the characterization of factors in (bipartite) graphs and digraphs, respectively. Soon after, Kouider and Vestergaard summarized the findings related to connected factors [Graphs Combin., 2005, 21(1): 1-26]. Plummer extended the aforementioned research by providing a comprehensive overview of progress made in the study of graph factors and factorization from 1985 to 2003 [Discrete Math., 2007, 7-8: 791-821]. In this paper, we aim to summarize the relevant results regarding factors from the perspective of eigenvalues.

Abstract:In this article, we obtain a sufficient condition for the existence of regular factors in a regular graph in terms of its third largest eigenvalue. A survey on constructive methods for the Oberwolfach problem and its variants

Abstract:The generalized Oberwolfach problem asks for a decomposition of a graph $G$ into specified 2-regular spanning subgraphs $F_1,\ldots, F_k$, called factors. The classic Oberwolfach problem corresponds to the case when all of the factors are pairwise isomorphic, and $G$ is the complete graph of odd order or the complete graph of even order with the edges of a $1$-factor removed. When there are two possible factor types, it is called the Hamilton-Waterloo problem. In this paper we present a survey of constructive methods which have allowed recent progress in this area. Specifically, we consider blow-up type constructions, particularly as applied to the case when each factor consists of cycles of the same length. We consider the case when the factors are all bipartite (and hence consist of even cycles) and a method for using circulant graphs to find solutions. We also consider constructions which yield solutions with well-behaved automorphisms.

Abstract:In this article, we discuss when one can extend an r-regular graph to an r + 1 regular by adding edges. Different conditions on the num- ber of vertices n and regularity r are developed. We derive an upper bound of r, depending on n, for which, every regular graph G(n, r) can be extended to an r + 1-regular graph with n vertices. Presence of induced complete bipartite subgraph and complete subgraph is dis- cussed, separately, for the extension of regularity.

Abstract:In 2014, some scholars showed that every 2-connected claw-free graph G with independence number α(G)≤3 is Hamiltonian with one exception of family of graphs. If a nontrivial path contains only internal vertices of degree two and end vertices of degree not two, then we call it a branch. A set S of branches of a graph G is called a branch cut if we delete all edges and internal vertices of branches of S leading to more components than G. We use a branch bond to denote a minimal branch cut. If a branch-bond has an odd number of branches, then it is called odd. In this paper, we shall characterize all 2-connected claw-free graphs G such that every odd branch-bond of G has an edge branch and such that α(G)≤5 but has no 2-factor. We also consider the same problem for those 2-edge-connected claw-free graphs with α(G)≤4.

Abstract:We investigate 1-factorisations in which the 2-regular graphs that occur as the union of a pair of 1-factors appear an equal number of times across the unions of all pairs of 1-factors in the 1-factorisation. We call such 1-factorisations balanced 1-factorisations (B1Fs) and we present some results on B1Fs of 3- and 4-regular circulant graphs.

Abstract:Girth-regular graphs with equal girth, regular degree and chromatic index are studied for the determination of 1-factorizations with each 1-factor intersecting every girth cycle. Applications to hamiltonian decomposability and to 3-dimensional geometry are given. Applications are suggested for priority assignment and optimization problems.

Abstract:A 2‐factor in a graph G is a subset of edges M such that every node of G is incident with exactly two edges of M . Many results are known concerning 2‐factors including a polynomial‐time algorithm for finding 2‐factors and a characterization of those graphs that have a 2‐factor. The problem of finding a 2‐factor in a graph is a relaxation of the NP‐hard problem of finding a Hamilton cycle. A stronger relaxation is the problem of finding a triangle‐free 2‐factor, that is, a 2‐factor whose edges induce no cycle of length 3. In this paper, we present a polynomial‐time algorithm for the problem of finding a triangle‐free 2‐factor as well as a characterization of the graphs that have such a 2‐factor and related min–max and augmenting path theorems.

Finding irregular subgraphs via local adjustments

Abstract:For a graph $H$, let $m(H,k)$ denote the number of vertices of degree $k$ in $H$. A conjecture of Alon and Wei states that for any $d\geq 3$, every $n$-vertex $d$-regular graph contains a spanning subgraph $H$ satisfying $|m(H,k)-\frac{n}{d+1}|\leq 2$ for every $0\leq k \leq d$. This holds easily when $d\leq 2$. An asymptotic version of this conjecture was initially established by Frieze, Gould, Karoński and Pfender, subsequently improved by Alon and Wei, and most recently enhanced by Fox, Luo and Pham, approaching its complete range. All of these approaches relied on probabilistic methods. In this paper, we provide a novel framework to study this conjecture, based on localized deterministic techniques which we call local adjustments. We prove two main results. Firstly, we show that every $n$-vertex $d$-regular graph contains a spanning subgraph $H$ satisfying $|m(H,k)-\frac{n}{d+1}|\leq 2d^2$ for all $0\leq k \leq d$, which provides the first bound independent of the value of $n$. Secondly, we confirm the case $d=3$ of the Alon-Wei Conjecture in a strong form. Both results can be generalized to multigraphs and yield efficient algorithms for finding the desired subgraphs $H$. Furthermore, we explore a generalization of the Alon-Wei Conjecture for multigraphs and its connection to the Faudree-Lehel Conjecture concerning irregularity strength.

Toughness and existence of $2$-factors

Abstract:A graph is $t$-tough if the deletion of any set of, say, $m$ vertices from the graph leaves a graph with at most $\frac{m}{t}$ components. In 1973, Chvátal suggested the problem of relating toughness to factors in graphs. In 1985, Enomoto et al. showed that each $2$-tough graph with at least three vertices has a $2$-factor, but for any $\epsilon>0$, there exists a $(2-\epsilon)$-tough graph on at least $3$ vertices having no $2$-factor. In recent years, the study of sufficient conditions for graphs with toughness less than $2$ having a $2$-factor has received a paramount interest. In this paper, we give new tight sufficient conditions for a $t$-tough graph having a $2$-factor when $1\le t<2$ by involving independence number, minimum degree, connectivity and forbidden forests.

Abstract:In 1988, Duval introduced the concept of directed strongly regular graphs, which can be viewed as a directed graph version of strongly regular graphs. Such directed graphs have similar structural and algebraic properties to strongly regular graphs. In the past three decades, it was found that Cayley graphs, especially those over dihedral groups, play a key role in the construction of directed strongly regular graphs. In this paper, we focus on the characterization of directed strongly regular Cayley graphs over more general groups. Let $G$ be a non-abelian group with an abelian subgroup of index $2$. We give some necessary conditions for a Cayley graph over $G$ to be directed strongly regular, and characterize the directed strongly regular Cayley graphs over $G$ satisfying specified conditions. This extends some previous results of He and Zhang (2019).

An H-factor of graph G is a spanning subgraphs F such thatd(F)(v) is an element of H(v) for every v is an element of V (G).Let f : V (G) -> N be an even integer-valued function such that f >= 4 and let H-f (v) = {1, 3,..., f (v) - 1, f (v)} for v is an element of V (G). In this article, we investigate H-f -factors of graphs by using Lovasz's structural descriptions. Let o(G) denote the number of odd components of G. We show that if one of the following conditions holds, then G contains an H-f -factor.(i) vertical bar V(G)vertical bar is even and o(G-S) <= f(S) for all S subset of V(G);(ii) vertical bar V(G)vertical bar is odd, d(G)(v) >= f(v) - 1 for all v is an element of V(G) and o(G - S) <= f(S) for all (sic) not equal S subset of V(G).As a corollary, we showthat if a graph G of odd order withminimum degree at least 2n - 1 satisfieso(G - S) <= 2n vertical bar S vertical bar for all (sic) not equal S subset of V(G),then G contains an H-n-factor, where H-n = {1, 3,..., 2n - 1, 2n}. Abstract:We review the progress made on bounding the number of independent sets in $d$-regular and irregular graphs over the last 31 years. We particularly focus on contributions from Kahn, Zhao, and Sah et al. in incrementally proving stronger and more general versions of the upper bound. We reproduce the main results of these works, particularly focusing on the unweighted special case (with fugacity $\lambda = 1$), which allows us to provide more intuitive and clear explanations of the key ideas that have been developed in the field over three decades.

Abstract:Let G = (X, Y; E) be a bipartite graph, where X and Y are color classes and E is the set of edges of G. Lovasz and Plummer asked whether one can decide in polynomial time that a given bipartite graph G = (X, Y; E) admits a 1-anti-factor, that is subset F of E such that d(F)(v) = 1 for all v is an element of X and d(F)(v) not equal 1 for all v is an element of Y. Cornuejols answered this question in the affirmative. Yu and Liu asked whether, for a given integer k >= 3, every k-regular bipartite graph contains a 1-anti-factor. This paper answers this question in the affirmative.
