Abstract:Girth-regular graphs with equal girth, regular degree and chromatic index are studied for the determination of 1-factorizations with each 1-factor intersecting every girth cycle. Applications to hamiltonian decomposability and to 3-dimensional geometry are given. Applications are suggested for priority assignment and optimization problems.

Abstract:Let $G$ be a graph and $H\colon V(G)\to 2^\mathbb{N}$a set function associated with $G$.A spanning subgraph $F$ of $G$ is called an $H$-factorif the degree of any vertex $v$ in $F$ belongs to the set $H(v)$.This paper contains two results on the existence of $H$-factors in regular graphs.First, we construct an $r$-regular graph without some given $H^*$-factor.In particular,this gives a negative answer to a problem recently posed by Akbari and Kano.Second, by using Lovász's characterization theoremon the existence of $(g, f)$-factors,we find a sharp condition for the existence of general $H$-factors in $\{r, r+1\}$-graphsin terms of the maximum and minimum of $H$.This result reduces to Thomassen's theoremfor the case that $H(v)$ consists of the same two consecutive integers for all vertices $v$and to Tutte's theorem if the graph is regular in addition.
On the existence of factors intersecting sets of cycles in regular graphs

Abstract:A recent result by Kardoš, Máčajová and Zerafa [J. Comb. Theory, Ser. B. 160 (2023) 1--14] related to the famous Berge-Fulkerson conjecture implies that given an arbitrary set of odd pairwise edge-disjoint cycles, say $\mathcal O$, in a bridgeless cubic graph, there exists a $1$-factor intersecting all cycles in $\mathcal O$ in at least one edge. This remarkable result opens up natural generalizations in the case of an $r$-regular graph $G$ and a $t$-factor $F$, with $r$ and $t$ being positive integers. In this paper, we start the study of this problem by proving necessary and sufficient conditions on $G$, $t$ and $r$ to assure the existence of a suitable $F$ for any possible choice of the set $\mathcal O$. First of all, we show that $G$ needs to be $2$-connected. Under this additional assumption, we highlight how the ratio $\frac{t}{r}$ seems to play a crucial role in assuring the existence of a $t$-factor $F$ with the required properties by proving that $\frac{t}{r} \geq \frac{1}{3}$ is a further necessary condition. We suspect that this condition is also sufficient, and we confirm it in the case $\frac{t}{r}=\frac{1}{3}$, generalizing the case $t=1$ and $r=3$ proved by Kardoš, Máčajová, Zerafa, and in the case $\frac{t}{r}=\frac{1}{2}$ with $t$ even. Finally, we provide further results in the case of cycles of arbitrary length.

Regular Factors of Regular Graphs from Eigenvalues

Abstract:Let $r$ and $m$ be two integers such that $r\geq m$. Let $H$ be a graph with order $|H|$, size $e$ and maximum degree $r$ such that $2e\geq |H|r-m$. We find a best lower bound on spectral radius of graph $H$ in terms of $m$ and $r$. Let $G$ be a connected $r$-regular graph of order $|G|$ and $ k < r$ be an integer. Using the previous results, we find some best upper bounds (in terms of $r$ and $k$) on the third largest eigenvalue that is sufficient to guarantee that $G$ has a $k$-factor when $k|G|$ is even. Moreover, we find a best bound on the second largest eigenvalue that is sufficient to guarantee that $G$ is $k$-critical when $k|G|$ is odd. Our results extend the work of Cioabă, Gregory and Haemers [J. Combin. Theory Ser. B, 1999] who obtained such results for 1-factors.

Abstract:We investigate 1-factorisations in which the 2-regular graphs that occur as the union of a pair of 1-factors appear an equal number of times across the unions of all pairs of 1-factors in the 1-factorisation. We call such 1-factorisations balanced 1-factorisations (B1Fs) and we present some results on B1Fs of 3- and 4-regular circulant graphs.

Abstract:In 1970 Lov{á}sz gave a necessary and sufficient condition for the existence of a factor $F$ in a graph $G$ such that for each vertex $v$, $g(v)\le d_F(v)\le f(v)$, where $g$ and $f$ are two integer-valued functions on $V(G)$ with $g\le f$. In this paper, we give a sufficient edge-connectivity condition for the existence of an $m$-tree-connected factor $H$ in a bipartite graph $G$ with bipartition $(X,Y)$ such that its complement is $m_0$-tree-connected and for each vertex $v$, $d_H(v)\in \{g(v),f(v)\}$, provided that for each vertex $v$, $g(v)+m_0\le \frac{1}{2}d_G(v)\le f(v)-m$ and $|f(v)-g(v)|\le k$, and there is $h(v)\in \{g(v),f(v)\}$ in which $\sum_{v\in X}h(v)=\sum_{v\in Y}h(v)$. Moreover, we generalize this result to general graphs. As an application, we give sufficient conditions for the existence of tree-connected $\{g,f\}$-factors in edge-connected graphs and tough graphs.

Abstract:Let G be a graph and be a set of connected graphs. A spanning subgraph H of G is called an –factor if each component of H is isomorphic to a member of . In this paper, we first present a lower bound on the size (resp. the spectral radius) of G to guarantee that G has a –factor (or a perfect k –matching for even k ) and construct extremal graphs to show all this bounds are best possible. We then provide a lower bound on the signless laplacian spectral radius of G to ensure that G has a –factor, where is an integer. Moreover, we also provide some Laplacian eigenvalue (resp. toughness) conditions for the existence of –factor, –factor and –factor in G , respectively. Some of our results extend or improve the related existing results.

Abstract:Let $G$ be a graph and $h: E(G)\rightarrow [0,1]$ be a function. For any two positive integers $a$ and $b$ with $a\leq b$, a fractional $[a,b]$-factor of $G$ with the indicator function $h$ is a spanning subgraph with vertex set $V(G)$ and edge set $E_h$ such that $a\leq\sum_{e\in E_{G}(v)}h(e)\leq b$ for any vertex $v\in V(G)$, where $E_h = \{e\in E(G)|h(e)>0\}$ and $E_{G}(v)=\{e\in E(G)| e~\mbox{is incident with}~v~\mbox{in}~G\}$. A graph $G$ is ID-factor-critical if for every independent set $I$ of $G$ whose size has the same parity as $|V(G)|$, $G-I$ has a perfect matching. In this paper, we present a tight sufficient condition based on the spectral radius for a graph to contain a fractional $[a,b]$-factor, which extends the result of Wei and Zhang [Discrete Math. 346 (2023) 113269]. Furthermore, we also prove a tight sufficient condition in terms of the spectral radius for a graph with minimum degree $\delta$ to be ID-factor-critical.

Abstract:For a graph G, let odd(G) and ω(G) denote the number of odd components and the number of components of G, respectively. Then it is well-known that G has a 1-factor if and only if odd(G−S)≤|S| for all S⊂V(G). Also it is clear that odd(G−S)≤ω(G−S). In this paper we characterize a 1-tough graph G, which satisfies ω(G−S)≤|S| for all 0̸≠S⊂V(G), using an H-factor of a set-valued function H:V(G)→{{1},{0,2}}. Moreover, we generalize this characterization to a graph that satisfies ω(G−S)≤f(S) for all 0̸≠S⊂V(G), where f:V(G)→{1,3,5,…}.

Abstract:Let a, b and r be three nonnegative integers with 2 <= a <= b - r, let G be a graph of order p satisfying the inequality p(a + r) >= (a + b - 3)(2a + b + r) +1, and let g and f be two integer-valued functions defined on V (G) satisfying a <= g(x) <= f(x) - r <= b - r for every x is an element of V (G). A graph G is said to be fractional ID-(g, f) -factor -critical if G - I contains a fractional (g, f)-factor for every independent set I of G. In this paper, we prove that G is fractional ID-(g, f) -factor-critical if bind(G) ((a + r)p - (a + b 2)) > (2a + b + r - 1)(p - 1), which is a generalization of a previous result of Zhou.

Abstract:Given two positive integers l and m, with l \le m, an [l,m]-covering of a graph G is a set M of matchings of G whose union is the edge set of G and such that l \le |L| \le m for every matching L of M. An [l,m]-covering M of G is an excessive [l,m]-factorization of G if the cardinality of M is as small as possible. The number of matchings in an excessive [l,m]-factorization of G (or \infty, if G does not admit an excessive [l,m]-factorization) is a graph parameter called the excessive [l,m]-index of G and denoted by \chi'[l,m](G). In this paper we study such parameter. Our main result is a general formula for the excessive [l,m]-index of a graph G in terms of other graph parameters. Furthermore, we give a polynomial time algorithm which computes \chi'[l,m](G) and outputs an excessive [l,m]-factorization of G, whenever the latter exists.

Geometric graphs with exponential chromatic number and arbitrary girth

Abstract:In 1975 Erdős initiated the study of the following very natural question. What can be said about the chromatic number of unit distance graphs in $\mathbb{R}^2$ that have large girth? Over the years this question and its natural extension to $\mathbb{R}^d$ attracted considerable attention with the high-dimensional variant reiterated recently by Alon and Kupavskii. We prove that there exist unit distance graphs in $\mathbb{R}^d$ with chromatic number at least $(1.074 + o(1))^d$ that have arbitrarily large girth. This improves upon a series of results due to Kupavskii; Sagdeev; and Sagdeev and Raigorodskii and gives the first bound in which the base of the exponent does not tend to one with the girth. In addition, our construction can be made explicit which allows us to answer in a strong form a question of Kupavskii. Our arguments show graphs of large chromatic number and high girth exist in a number of other geometric settings including diameter graphs and orthogonality graphs.

Abstract:Let G = (X, Y; E) be a bipartite graph, where X and Y are color classes and E is the set of edges of G. Lovasz and Plummer asked whether one can decide in polynomial time that a given bipartite graph G = (X, Y; E) admits a 1-anti-factor, that is subset F of E such that d(F)(v) = 1 for all v is an element of X and d(F)(v) not equal 1 for all v is an element of Y. Cornuejols answered this question in the affirmative. Yu and Liu asked whether, for a given integer k >= 3, every k-regular bipartite graph contains a 1-anti-factor. This paper answers this question in the affirmative.
Equitable factorizations of highly edge-connected graphs: complete characterizations

Abstract:In this paper, we show that every highly edge-connected graph $G$, under a necessary and sufficient degree condition, can be edge-decomposed into $k$ factors $G_1,\ldots, G_k$ such that for each vertex $v\in V(G_i)$ with $1\le i\le k$, $|d_{G_i}(v)-d_G(v)/k|<1$. This characterization covers graphs having at least $k-1$ vertices with degree not divisible by $k$. In addition, we investigate almost equitable factorizations in arbitrary edge-connected graphs. Next, we establish a simpler criterion for the existence of factorizations $G_1,\ldots, G_k$ satisfying $d_{G_i}(v)\ge \lfloor d_G(v)/k\rfloor$ for all vertices $v$ (reps. $d_{G_i}(v)\le \lceil d_G(v)/k\rceil$). As an application, we come up with a criterion to determine whether a highly edge-connected graph with $\delta(G)\ge \delta_1+\cdots+ \delta_m$ (resp. $\Delta(G)\le \Delta_1+\cdots+ \Delta_m$) can be edge-decomposed into factors $G_1,\ldots, G_m$ satisfying $\delta(G_i)\ge \delta_i$ (resp. $\Delta(G_i)\le \Delta_i$) for all $i$ with $1\le i \le m$, provided that $\delta_1+\cdots+ \delta_m$ is divisible by an odd number $p$ and $\delta_i\ge p-1\ge 2$ (resp. $\Delta_1+\cdots+ \Delta_m$ is divisible by $p$ and $\Delta_i\ge p-1\ge 2$). For graphs of even order, we replace an odd-edge-connectivity condition. In particular, for the special case $m=2$, we refine the needed odd-edge-connectivity further by giving a sufficient odd-edge-connectivity condition for a graph $G$ to have a partial parity factor $F$ such that for each vertex $v$ with a given parity constraint, $| d_{F}(v)-\varepsilon d_G(v)|< 2$, and for all other vertices $v$, $| d_{F}(v)-\varepsilon d_G(v)|\le 1$, where $\varepsilon $ is a real number and $0< \varepsilon < 1$. Finally we introduce another application on the existence of almost even factorizations of odd-edge-connected graphs.

Abstract:Let $G$ denote a graph and $k\geq2$ be an integer. A $\{K_{1,1},K_{1,2},\ldots,K_{1,k},\mathcal{T}(2k+1)\}$-factor of $G$ is a spanning subgraph, whose every connected component is isomorphic to an element of $\{K_{1,1},K_{1,2},\ldots,K_{1,k},\mathcal{T}(2k+1)\}$, where $\mathcal{T}(2k+1)$ is one special family of tree. In this paper, we put forward some sufficient conditions for the existence of $\{K_{1,1},K_{1,2},\ldots,K_{1,k},\mathcal{T}(2k+1)\}$-factors in graphs. Furthermore, we construct some extremal graphs to show that the main results in this paper are best possible.

Abstract:Partial cubes are graphs isometrically embeddable into hypercubes. We analyze how isometric cycles in partial cubes behave and derive that every partial cube of girth more than 6 must have vertices of degree less than 3. As a direct corollary we get that every regular partial cube of girth more than 6 is an even cycle. Along the way we prove that every partial cube $G$ with girth more than 6 is a tree-zone graph and therefore $2n(G)-m(G)-i(G)+ce(G)=2$ holds, where $i(G)$ is the isometric dimension of $G$ and $ce(G)$ its convex excess.

Factor-critical graphs and dstab, astab for an edge ideal

Abstract:Let $G$ be a simple, connected non bipartite graph and let $I_G$ be the edge idealof $G$. In our previous work we showed that L. Lovász's theorem on ear decompositions offactor-critical graphs and the canonical decomposition of a graph given by Edmonds and Gallai are basic tools for the irreducible decomposition of $I^{k}_G$. In this paper we use some tools from graph theory, mainly Withney's theorem on ear decompositions of 2-edge connected graphs in order to introduce a new method to make a graph factor-critical. We can describe the set $\cup_ {k=1}^{\infty}{\rm Ass} (I^{k}_G)$ in terms of some subsets of $G$. We give explicit formulas for the numbers astab$(I_G)$ and dstab$(I_G)$, which are, respectively, the smallest number $k$ such that ${\rm Ass} (I^{k}_G)= {\rm Ass} (I^{k+i}_G)$ for all $i\geq 0$ and the smallest number $k$ such that the maximal ideal belongs to ${\rm Ass}(I^{k}_G)$. We also give very simple upper bounds for astab$(I_G)$ and dstab$(I_G)$.

Abstract:For integers $r,t\geq2$ and $n\geq1$ let $f_r(t,n)$ be the minimum, over all factorizations of the complete $r$-uniform hypergraph of order $n$ into $t$ factors $H_1,\dots,H_t$, of $\sum_{i=1}^tc(H_i)$ where $c(H_i)$ is the number of maximal cliques in $H_i$. It is known that $f_2(2,n)=n+1$; in fact, if $G$ is a graph of order $n$, then $c(G)+c(\overline G)\geq n+1$ with equality iff $\omega(G)+\alpha(G)=n+1$ where $\omega$ is the clique number and $\alpha$ the independence number. In this paper we investigate $f_r(t,n)$ when $r>2$ or $t>2$. We also characterize graphs $G$ of order $n$ with $c(G)+c(\overline G)=n+2$.

Abstract:Let $G$ be a bipartite graph with bipartition $(X,Y)$, let $k$ be a positive integer, and let $f:V(G)\rightarrow \{-1,\ldots, k-2\}$ be a mapping with $\sum_{v\in X}f(v) \stackrel{k}{\equiv}\sum_{v\in Y}f(v)$. In this paper, we show that if $G$ is essentially $(3k-3)$-edge-connected and for each vertex $v$, $d_G(v)\ge 2k-1+f(v)$, then it admits a factor $H$ such that for each vertex $v$, $d_H(v)\stackrel{k}{\equiv} f(v)$, and $$\lfloor\frac{d_G(v)}{2}\rfloor-(k-1)\le d_{H}(v)\le \lceil\frac{d_G(v)}{2}\rceil+k-1.$$ Next, we generalize this result to general graphs and derive sufficient conditions for a highly edge-connected general graph $G$ to have a factor $H$ such that for each vertex $v$, $d_H(v)\in \{f(v),f(v)+k\}$. Finally, we show that every $(4k-1)$-edge-connected essentially $(6k-7)$-edge-connected graph admits a bipartite factor whose degrees are positive and divisible by $k$.

Two problems of existence of total and edge-girth colorings in regular graphs via efficient dominating sets

Abstract:Let $G$ be a regular graph $G$. A total coloring of $G$ via a set formed by one more color, or twice the colors, than the degree of $G$ is said to be a {\it totally efficient coloring} of {\it type $+1$}, or {\it type $\times 2$}, respectively, if each color class is an efficient dominating set. It is shown here that the binary 3-cube $Q_3$ has a totally efficient coloring. This in turn yields an edge-girth coloring of the binary 4-cube $Q_4$. It is conjectured that such totally efficient coloring of $Q_3$ is the only existing one in any regular graph $G$ of type $+1$, yielding an edge-girth coloring of the prism of $G$. We also deal with regular graphs of type $\times 2$ exemplified by star (multiset) transposition graphs and leading to edge-girth colorings on their prisms (or the prisms of their Hamming shells, respectively).
