Abstract:The deterministic inviscid primitive equations (also called the hydrostatic Euler equations) are known to be ill-posed in Sobolev spaces and in Gevrey classes of order strictly greater than 1, and some of their analytic solutions exist only locally in time and exhibit finite-time blowup. This work demonstrates that introducing suitable random noise can restore the local well-posedness and prevent finite-time blowups. Specifically, random diffusion addresses the ill-posedness in certain Gevrey classes, allowing us to establish the local well-posedness almost surely and the global existence of solutions with high probability. In the case of random damping (linear multiplicative noise), the noise prevents analytic solutions from forming singularities in finite time, resulting in globally existing solutions with high probability.

Abstract:Abstract We study the three-dimensional incompressible Euler equations subject to stochastic forcing. We develop a concept of dissipative martingale solutions, where the nonlinear terms are described by generalised Young measures. We construct these solutions as the vanishing viscosity limit of solutions to the corresponding stochastic Navier–Stokes equations. This requires a refined stochastic compactness method incorporating the generalised Young measures. As a main novelty, our solutions satisfy a form of the energy inequality which gives rise to a weak–strong uniqueness result (pathwise and in law). A dissipative martingale solution coincides (pathwise or in law) with the strong solution as soon as the latter exists.

Abstract:Given any solution $u$ of the Euler equations which is assumed to have some regularity in space - in terms of Besov norms, natural in this context - we show by interpolation methods that it enjoys a corresponding regularity in time and that the associated pressure $p$ is twice as regular as $u$. This generalizes a recent result by Isett [16] (see also Colombo and De Rosa [8]), which covers the case of Hölder spaces.

Abstract:This work focuses on the regularization by nonlinear noise for a class of partial differential equations that may only have local solutions. In particular, we obtain the global existence, uniqueness and the Feller property for stochastic 3D Navier-Stokes equations, which provide positive answers to a longstanding open problem in this field. Moreover, we discover a new phenomenon that for a potentially explosive deterministic system, an appropriate intervention of nonlinear noise can not only prevent blow-up but also lead to the finite time extinction of the associated stochastic system. Our main results have broad applications, including stochastic $p$-Laplace equations with heat sources, stochastic surface growth models and stochastic quasi-geostrophic equations.

The pressureless damped Euler-Riesz system in the critical regularity framework

Abstract:We are concerned with a system governing the evolution of the pressureless compressible Euler equations with Riesz interaction and damping in $\mathbb{R}^{d}$ ($d\geq1$), where the interaction force is given by $\nabla(-\Delta)^{\smash{\frac{\alpha-d}{2}}}(\rho-\bar{\rho})$ with $d-2<\alpha<d$. Referring to the standard dissipative structure of first-order hyperbolic systems, the purpose of this paper is to investigate the weaker dissipation effect arising from the interaction force and to establish the global existence and large-time behavior of solutions to the Cauchy problem in the critical $L^p$ framework. More precisely, it is observed by the spectral analysis that the density behaves like fractional heat diffusion at low frequencies. Furthermore, if the low-frequency part of the initial perturbation is bounded in some Besov space $\dot{B}^{\sigma_1}_{p,\infty}$ with $-d/p-1\leq \sigma_1<d/p-1$, it is shown that the $L^p$-norm of the $\sigma$-order derivative for the density converges to its equilibrium at the rate $(1+t)^{-\smash{\frac{\sigma-\sigma_1}{\alpha-d+2}}}$, which coincides with that of the fractional heat kernel.

Regularizing effect for conservation laws with a Lipschitz convex flux

Abstract:This paper studies the smoothing effect for entropy solutions of conservation laws with general nonlinear convex fluxes on $\mathbb{R}$. Beside convexity, no additional regularity is assumed on the flux. Thus, we generalize the well-known $\mathrm{BV}$ smoothing effect for $\mathrm{C}^2$ uniformly convex fluxes discovered independently by P. D. Lax and O. Oleinik, while in the present paper the flux is only locally Lipschitz. Therefore, the wave velocity can be dicontinuous and the one-sided Oleinik inequality is lost. This inequality is usually the fundamental tool to get a sharp regularizing effect for the entropy solution. We modify the wave velocity in order to get an Oleinik inequality useful for the wave front tracking algorithm. Then, we prove that the unique entropy solution belongs to a generalized $\mathrm{BV}$ space, $\mathrm{BV}^\Phi$.

Existence of Euler-Korteweg equations with the non-monotone pressure

Abstract:We are concerned with a system of equations in $\mathbb{R}^{d}$ governing the evolution of compressible fluids of Euler-Korteweg type, which can be used as a phase transition model. In the case of zero sound speed $P'(\rho^{\ast})=0$, it is found that the perturbation problem of irrotational fluids could be reformulated into a quasi-linear Schr$\ddot{o}$dinger equation. Based on techniques of dispersive estimates and methods of normal form, we shall establish global-in-time well-posedness of Cauchy problems for $d=4$ and almost global existence in $d=3$ without stability condition on the pressure. Moreover, we would construct a class of global scattering solutions for 3D case.

Abstract:To understand the formations of singularities of the Euler-Poisson system with vacuum, we revisit Makino's star model in this article. We first remedy, to some extent, the inconveniences of Makino's star model and remove its imposed nonphysically exterior free-falling velocity field by only specifying the velocity field on a compact support of the density. Makino has coined the presence of such an exterior velocity field as a ``Cheshire cat phenomenon'' and he [33] and Rendall [45] have both emphasized the difficulty of removing this phenomenon. Moreover, we obtain an improved local existence and uniqueness theorem for initial data for the density and velocity that both have compact support. Finally, we are able to prove a localized strong continuation criterion in which the breakdown of solutions is only controlled by quantities defined on the compact support of the solution. In addition, the localized strong continuation criterion also generalizes the continuation criterion from the incompressible Euler equation in a bounded domain [16,47] to the compressible Euler-Poisson system.

Fractional Voigt-regularization of the 3D Navier--Stokes and Euler equations: Global well-posedness and limiting behavior

Abstract:The Voigt regularization is a technique used to model turbulent flows, offering advantages such as sharing steady states with the Navier-Stokes equations and requiring no modification of boundary conditions; however, the parabolic dissipative character of the equation is lost. In this work we propose and study a generalization of the Voigt regularization technique by introducing a fractional power $r$ in the Helmholtz operator, which allows for dissipation in the system, at least in the viscous case. We examine the resulting fractional Navier-Stokes-Voigt (fNSV) and fractional Euler-Voigt (fEV) and show that global well-posedness holds in the 3D periodic case for fNSV when the fractional power $r \geq \frac{1}{2}$ and for fEV when $r>\frac{5}{6}$. Moreover, we show that the solutions of these fractional Voigt-regularized systems converge to solutions of the original equations, on the corresponding time interval of existence and uniqueness of the latter, as the regularization parameter $\alpha \to 0$. Additionally, we prove convergence of solutions of fNSV to solutions of fEV as the viscosity $\nu \to 0$ as well as the convergence of solutions of fNSV to solutions of the 3D Euler equations as both $\alpha, \nu \to 0$. Furthermore, we derive a criterion for finite-time blow-up for each system based on this regularization. These results may be of use to researchers in both pure and applied fluid dynamics, particularly in terms of approximate models for turbulence and as tools to investigate potential blow-up of solutions.

The compressible Euler system with nonlocal pressure: Global existence and relaxation

Abstract:We here investigate a modification of the compressible barotropic Euler system with friction, involving a fuzzy nonlocal pressure term in place of the conventional one. This nonlocal term is parameterized by $\epsilon$ > 0 and formally tends to the classical pressure when $\epsilon$ approaches zero. The central challenge is to establish that this system is a reliable approximation of the classical compressible Euler system. We establish the global existence and uniqueness of regular solutions in the neighborhood of the static state with density 1 and null velocity. Our results are demonstrated independently of the parameter $\epsilon$, which enable us to prove the convergence of solutions to those of the classical Euler system. Another consequence is the rigorous justification of the convergence of the mass equation to various versions of the porous media equation in the asymptotic limit where the friction tends to infinity. Note that our results are demonstrated in the whole space, which necessitates the use of a suitable L^1-in-time space framework.

Abstract:The aim of this note is to study the Cauchy problem for the 2D Euler equations under very low regularity assumptions on the initial datum. We prove propagation of regularity of logarithmic order in the class of weak solutions with $L^p$ initial vorticity, provided that $p\geq 4$. We also study the inviscid limit from the 2D Navier-Stokes equations for vorticity with logarithmic regularity in the Yudovich class, showing a rate of convergence of order $|\log\nu|^{-\alpha/2}$ with $\alpha>0$.

Abstract:We propose a modification of the standard linear implicit Euler integrator for the weak approximation of parabolic semilinear stochastic PDEs driven by additive space-time white noise. This new method can easily be combined with a finite difference method for the spatial discretization. The proposed method is shown to have improved qualitative properties compared with the standard method. First, for any time-step size, the spatial regularity of the solution is preserved, at all times. Second, the proposed method preserves the Gaussian invariant distribution of the infinite dimensional Ornstein–Uhlenbeck process obtained when the nonlinearity is removed, for any time-step size. The weak order of convergence of the proposed method is shown to be equal to 1/2 in a general setting, like for the standard Euler scheme. A stronger weak approximation result is obtained when considering the approximation of a Gibbs invariant distribution, when the nonlinearity is a gradient: one obtains an approximation in total variation distance of order 1/2, which does not hold for the standard method. This is the first result of this type in the literature and this is the major and most original result of this article.

Abstract:In this paper we establish the optimal regularity estimates for the Cauchy problem of stochastic kinetic equations with random coefficients in anisotropic Besov spaces. As applications, we study the nonlinear filtering problem for a degenerate diffusion process, and obtain the existence and regularity of conditional probability densities under few assumptions. Moreover, we also show the well-posedness for a class of super-linear growth stochastic kinetic equations driven by velocity-time white noises, as well as a kinetic version of Parabolic Anderson Model with measure as initial values.

Abstract:We consider the propagation of surface water waves described by the Boussinesq system. Following (Molinet et al. in Nonlinearity 34:744–775, 2021), we introduce a regularized Boussinesq system obtained by adding a non-local pseudo-differential operator define by with . In this paper, we display a twofold approach: first, we study theoretically the existence of an asymptotic expansion for the solution to the Cauchy problem associated to this regularized Boussinesq system with respect to the regularizing parameter . Then, we compute numerically the function coefficients of the expansion (in ) and verify numerically the validity of this expansion up to order 2. We also check the numerical stability of the numerical algorithm.

We consider several pressureless variants of the compressible Euler equation driven by nonlocal repulsion-attraction and alignment forces with Poisson interaction. Under an energy admissibility criterion, we prove existence of global measure-valued solutions, i.e., very weak solutions described by a classical Young measure together with appropriate concentration defects. We then investigate the evolution of a relative energy functional to compare a measure-valued solution to a regular solution emanating from the same initial datum. This leads to a (partial) weak-strong uniqueness principle.

Abstract:We give an elementary proof for the double Hölder regularity of the hydrodynamic pressure for weak solutions of the Euler Equations in a bounded $C^2$-domain $\Omega \subset \mathbb{R}^d$; $d\geq 3$. That is, for velocity $u \in C^{0,\gamma}(\Omega;\mathbb{R}^d)$ with some $0<\gamma<1/2$, we show that the pressure $p \in C^{0,2\gamma}(\Omega)$. This is motivated by the studies of turbulence and anolalous dissipation in mathematical hydrodynamics and, recently, has been established in [L. De Rosa, M. Latocca, and G. Stefani, Int. Math. Res. Not. 2024.3 (2024), 2511-2560] over $C^{2,\alpha}$-domains by means of pseudodifferential calculus. Our approach involves only standard elliptic PDE techniques, and relies crucially on the modified pressure introduced in [C. W. Bardos, D. W. Boutros, and E. S. Titi, Hölder regularity of the pressure for weak solutions of the 3D Euler equations in bounded domains, arXiv: <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2304.01952" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2304.01952">2304.01952</a>] and the potential estimates in [L. Silvestre, unpublished notes]. The key novel ingredient of our proof is the introduction of two cutoff functions whose localisation parameters are carefully chosen as a power of the distance to $\partial\Omega$.

Abstract:The convergence of the first order Euler scheme and an approximative variant thereof, along with convergence rates, are established for rough differential equations driven by càdlàg paths satisfying a suitable criterion, namely the so-called Property (RIE), along time discretizations with vanishing mesh size. This property is then verified for almost all sample paths of Brownian motion, Itô processes, Lévy processes and general càdlàg semimartingales, as well as the driving signals of both mixed and rough stochastic differential equations, relative to various time discretizations. Consequently, we obtain pathwise convergence in p-variation of the Euler--Maruyama scheme for stochastic differential equations driven by these processes.
