Abstract:After receiving an X-ray photon, an X-ray detector is not operational for a duration known as deadtime. It is detector specific and its effect on the data depends upon the luminosity of the source. It reduces the observed photon count rate in comparison to the expected one. In periodic sources such as the Crab pulsar, it can distort the folded light curve (FLC). An undistorted FLC of the Crab pulsar is required in combination with its polarization properties for studying its X-ray emission mechanism. This work derives a simple formula for the distortion of the FLC of a pulsar caused by the detector deadtime, and validates it using Crab pulsar data from the X-ray observatories {\it NICER} and {\it NUSTAR}, which have very small and relatively large detector deadtimes respectively. Then it derives a method for correcting the distorted FLC of the Crab pulsar in {\it IXPE} data, which has intermediate detector deadtime. The formula is verified after addressing several technical issues. This work ends with a discussion of why an undistorted FLC is important for studying the formation of cusps in the FLC of the Crab pulsar.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is the influence of the deadtime of X - ray detectors on the Folded Light Curve (FLC) of the Crab pulsar and its correction methods. Specifically: 1. **Problem Background**: - After an X - ray detector receives an X - ray photon, there will be a period of inoperable time, known as deadtime. The specific length of the deadtime depends on the characteristics of the detector, and its influence on the data depends on the brightness of the source. - For periodic sources such as the Crab pulsar, the deadtime will cause the observed photon count rate to be lower than the expected value, thus distorting the Folded Light Curve (FLC). - In order to study the X - ray emission mechanism of the Crab pulsar, an undistorted FLC is required. 2. **Paper Objectives**: - Derive a simple formula to describe the distortion of the pulsar FLC caused by the detector deadtime. - Verify this formula using data from NICER and NuSTAR. The detector deadtimes of these two observatories are very small and relatively large respectively. - Propose a method to correct the FLC distortion in IXPE data due to moderate deadtime. - Discuss the importance of the undistorted FLC for studying the formation of cusps in the FLC. 3. **Main Contributions**: - Proposed an analytical formula that links the observed FLC and the expected FLC and verified it with data from different detectors. - By analyzing the phase - resolved deadtime in IXPE data, proposed a method to correct the FLC. - Emphasized the importance of the undistorted FLC in studying the X - ray emission mechanism of the Crab pulsar. Through these works, the paper aims to provide an effective method to correct the FLC distortion caused by the detector deadtime, so as to study the X - ray emission mechanism of the Crab pulsar more accurately.
