Abstract:We present a modified outer gap model to study the phase-resolved spectra of the Crab pulsar. A theoretical double peak profile of the light curve containing the whole phase is shown to be consistent with the observed light curve of the Crab pulsar by shifting the inner boundary of the outer gap inwardly to $\sim 10$ stellar radii above the neutron star surface. In this model, the radial distances of the photons corresponding to different phases can be determined in the numerical calculation. Also the local electrodynamics, such as the accelerating electric field, the curvature radius of the magnetic field line and the soft photon energy, are sensitive to the radial distances to the neutron star. Using a synchrotron self-Compton mechanism, the phase-resolved spectra with the energy range from 100 eV to 3 GeV of the Crab pulsar can also be explained.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is related to the high - energy spectrum of the Crab Pulsar and its phase - resolved characteristics. Specifically, the authors proposed a modified outer gap model to explain the phase - resolved spectrum of the Crab Pulsar in the energy range from 100 eV to 3 GeV. This model better explains the observed light - curve features, especially the radiation of the leading wing, the trailing wing and the off - pulse, by adjusting the position of the inner boundary of the outer gap to be closer to the surface of the neutron star. ### Core Problems of the Paper 1. **Double - peak Structure of the Light Curve**: - The observational data show that the light curve of the Crab Pulsar has an obvious double - peak structure. Traditional models have difficulty in explaining the bridge between these double peaks and the strong radiation of the leading wing and the trailing wing. - The modified outer gap model can better explain these features by moving the inner boundary of the outer gap inward to about 10 stellar radii. 2. **Phase - resolved Spectrum**: - There are significant differences in the spectral characteristics of the Crab Pulsar at different phases. The paper explains these differences through the synchrotron self - Compton mechanism. - The authors calculated the spectra in different phase intervals in detail and compared them with the observational data to verify the validity of the model. ### Main Methods 1. **Modified Outer Gap Model**: - Move the inner boundary of the outer gap inward from the traditional null charge surface to about 10 stellar radii. - Determine the radial distance of photons at different phases through numerical calculation, and consider the sensitivity of the radial distance to local electrodynamic characteristics (such as the accelerating electric field, the radius of curvature of the magnetic field lines and the soft photon energy). 2. **Synchrotron Self - Compton Mechanism**: - Use the synchrotron radiation and inverse Compton scattering (ICS) processes to explain the two main components of the high - energy spectrum: synchrotron radiation (from soft X - rays to about 10 MeV) and the ICS component (higher energy range). - Adjust parameters (such as the inclination angle α and the viewing angle ζ) to fit the observed light curve and phase - resolved spectrum. ### Conclusions 1. **Validity of the Model**: - The modified outer gap model can well explain the phase - resolved spectrum of the Crab Pulsar in the energy range from 100 eV to 1 GeV. - The model performs poorly in the energy range above 1 GeV, and further consideration of the escape mechanism of high - energy photons and other possible influencing factors is required. 2. **Parameter Selection**: - The magnetic axis inclination angle α = 50° and the viewing angle ζ = 75° are selected, and these parameters can better fit the observed double - peak phase separation. - By adjusting parameters such as the energy of curvature photons and the radius of the neutron star, the fitting effect of the model is further optimized. In conclusion, through the modified outer gap model, this paper successfully explains the high - energy spectrum of the Crab Pulsar and its phase - resolved characteristics, providing a new perspective for understanding the high - energy radiation mechanism of pulsars.
