Abstract:Pseudo-cones are a class of unbounded closed convex sets, not containing the origin. They admit a kind of polarity, called copolarity. With this, they can be considered as a counterpart to convex bodies containing the origin in the interior. The purpose of the following is to study this analogy in greater detail. We supplement the investigation of copolarity, considering, for example, conjugate faces. Then we deal with the question suggested by Minkowski's theorem, asking which measures are surface area measures of pseudo-cones with given recession cone. We provide a sufficient condition for possibly infinite measures and a special class of pseudo-cones.

Abstract:Coherent sets of almost desirable gambles and credal sets are known to be equivalent models. That is, there exists a bijection between the two collections of sets preserving the usual operations, e.g. conditioning. Such a correspondence is based on the polarity theory for closed convex cones. Learning from this simple observation, in this paper we introduce a new (lexicographic) polarity theory for general convex cones and then we apply it in order to establish an analogous correspondence between coherent sets of desirable gambles and convex sets of lexicographic probabilities.

Abstract:An antinorm is a concave analogue of a norm. In contrast to norms, antinorms are not defined on the entire space $R^d$ but on a cone $K\subset R^d$. They are applied in the matrix analysis, optimal control, and dynamical systems. Their level sets are called conic bodies and (in case of piecewise-linear antinorms) conic polyhedra. The basic facts and notions of the "concave analysis" of antinorms such as separation theorems, duality, polars, Minkowski functionals, etc., are similar to those from the standard convex analysis. There are, however, some significant differences. One of them is the existence of many self-dual objects. We prove that there are infinitely many families of autopolar conic bodies and polyhedra in the cone $K=R^d_+$. For $d=2$, this gives a complete classification of self-dual antinorms, while for $d\ge 3$, there are counterexamples.

Weighted cone-volume measures of pseudo-cones

Abstract:A pseudo-cone in ${\mathbb R}^n$ is a nonempty closed convex set $K$ not containing the origin and such that $\lambda K \subseteq K$ for all $\lambda\ge 1$. It is called a $C$-pseudo-cone if $C$ is its recession cone, where $C$ is a pointed closed convex cone with interior points. The cone-volume measure of a pseudo-cone can be defined similarly as for convex bodies, but it may be infinite. After proving a necessary condition for cone-volume measures of $C$-pseudo-cones, we introduce suitable weights for cone-volume measures, yielding finite measures. Then we provide a necessary and sufficient condition for a Borel measure on the unit sphere to be the weighted cone-volume measure of some $C$-pseudo-cone.

Abstract:Abstract Hyperbolic polynomials elegantly encode a rich class of convex cones that includes polyhedral and spectrahedral cones. Hyperbolic polynomials are closed under taking polars and the corresponding cones-the derivative cones-yield relaxations for the associated optimization problem and exhibit interesting facial properties. While it is unknown if every hyperbolicity cone is a section of the positive semidefinite cone, it is natural to ask whether spectrahedral cones are closed under taking derivative cones. In this note we give an affirmative answer for polyhedral cones by exhibiting an explicit spectrahedral representation for the first derivative cone. We also prove that higher polars do not have a determinantal representation which shows that the problem for general spectrahedral cones is considerably more difficult

Abstract:The paper is devoted to a study of the cone $\cop$ of copositive matrices. Based on the known from semi-infinite optimization concept of immobile indices, we define zero and minimal zero vectors of a subset of the cone $\cop$ and use them to obtain different representations of faces of $\cop$ and the corresponding dual cones. We describe the minimal face of $\cop$ containing a given convex subset of this cone and prove some propositions that allow to obtain equivalent descriptions of the feasible sets of a copositive problems and may be useful for creating new numerical methods based on their regularization.

Abstract:In this monograph we provide an in-depth and systematic study of pseudolimits of pseudofunctors $F:\mathscr{C}^{op} \to \mathfrak{Cat}$ in the $2$-category of categories where $\mathscr{C}$ is a $1$-category and use this to give an explicit and careful study of the category theory used in representation theory, equivariant algebraic geometry, and equivariant algebraic topology and give a unifying language to study equivariant sheaves, equivariant perverse sheaves, and their equivariant derived categories. We show how to use the pseudocone construction $\mathsf{Bicat}(\mathscr{C}^{op},\mathfrak{Cat})(\operatorname{cnst}(1),F)$ in order to derive categorical and homological properties of the pseudolimit of $F$. We explicitly show when the pseudolimit of $F$ is complete, cocomplete, enriched in models of a Lawvere theory, (braided) monoidal, regular, triangulated, admits $t$-structures, and more. We use these various structural results to give a new category-theoretic proof and construction of the equivariant standard and pervese $t$-structures and equivariant six functor formalism for the equivariant derived category $D_G^b(X)$ in both the geometric and topological cases as well as for $D_G^b(X;\overline{\mathbb{Q}}_{\ell})$ in the geometric case. We also show in what sense precise sense we can view the equivariant derived category in terms of localizations. After restricting to the case of group resolution categories, we show the existence of a natural isomorphism $\Theta:\alpha_X^{\ast} \Rightarrow \pi_2^{\ast}$ which satisfies a pseudofunctorial version of the cocycle condition $d_1^{\ast}\Theta = d_2^{\ast}\Theta \circ d_0^{\ast}\Theta$. We also use the pseudocone formalism to give an in-depth analysis of change of groups functors. We use the pseudocone formalism and $\Theta$ to develop a notion of equivariant trace with an eye towards the representation theory of $p$-adic groups.

Abstract:In this short communication, we observe that the Graphical Traveling Salesman Polyhedron is the intersection of the positive orthant with the Minkowski sum of the Symmetric Traveling Salesman Polytope and the polar of the metric cone. This follows almost trivially from known facts. There are two reasons why we find this observation worth communicating none-the-less: It is very surprising; it helps to understand the relationship between these two important families of polyhedra.

Abstract:It is known that every hereditary property can be characterized by finitely many minimal obstructions when restricted to either the class of cographs or the class of -reducible graphs. In this work, we prove that the same is true when restricted to some other superclasses of cographs, including -sparse and -extendible graphs (both of which extend -reducible graphs). We also present complete lists of -sparse and -extendible minimal obstructions for polarity, monopolarity, unipolarity, and ( s , 1)-polarity, where s is a positive integer. In parallel to the case of -reducible graphs, all the -sparse minimal obstructions for these hereditary properties are cographs.

Abstract:We propose a unified view of the polarity of functions, that encompasses all specific definitions, generalizes several well-known properties and provides new results. We show that bipolar sets and bipolar functions are isomorphic lattices. Also, we explore three possible notions of polar subdifferential associated with a nonnegative function, and we make the connection with the notion of alignement of vectors.

A Relational Category of Birkhoff Polarities

Abstract:Garret Birkhoff observed that any binary relation between two sets determines a Galois connection between the powersets, or equivalently, closure operators on the powersets, or equivalently, complete lattices of subsets that are dually isomorphic. Referring to the duality of, say, points and lines in projective geometry, he named the binary relations as polarities. Researchers since then have used polarities (also known as formal contexts) as a convenient technical way to build complete lattices from ``found'' data. And so, various proposals for suitable morphisms between polarities have tended to have a particular application in mind. In this work, we develop the structure of a category of polarities and compatible relations, adopting Birkhoff's original simple idea that the structure of a polarity is its the Galois connection. Hence, morphisms must be relations that, in a reasonable sense, preserve Galois connections. In particular, the dual equivalence of the category to the category of complete meet semilattices, completeness of the category, characterization of epimorphisms and monomorphisms, an epi/mono factorization system, as well as the star-autonomous structure of the category, all arise by extending Birkhoff's original observation to morphisms.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider copositive cones over symmetric cones and show that they are never facially exposed when the underlying cone has dimension at least 2. We do so by explicitly exhibiting a non-exposed extreme ray. Our result extends the known fact that the cone of copositive matrices over the nonnegative orthant is not facially exposed in general.

Abstract:We consider a wide class of closed convex cones $K$ in the space of real $n\times n$ symmetric matrices and establish the existence of a chain of faces of $K$, the length of which is maximized at $\frac{n(n+1)}{2} + 1$. Examples of such cones include, but are not limited to, the completely positive and the copositive cones. Using this chain, we prove that the distance to polyhedrality of any closed convex cone $K$ that is sandwiched between the completely positive cone and the doubly nonnegative cone of order $n \ge 2$, as well as its dual, is at least $\frac{n(n+1)}{2} - 2$, which is also the worst-case scenario.

Abstract:Dualising the construction of a polyhedral product, we introduce the notion of a polyhedral coproduct as a certain homotopy limit over the face poset of a simplicial complex. We begin a study of the basic properties of polyhedral coproducts, surveying the Eckmann-Hilton duals of various familiar examples and properties of polyhedral products. In particular, we show that polyhedral coproducts give a functorial interpolation between the wedge and cartesian product of spaces which differs from the one given by polyhedral products, and we establish a general loop space decomposition for these spaces which is dual to the suspension splitting of a polyhedral product due to Bahri, Bendersky, Cohen and Gitler.

Abstract:We analyze self-dual polyhedral cones and prove several properties about their slack matrices. In particular, we show that self-duality is equivalent to the existence of a positive semidefinite (PSD) slack. Beyond that, we show that if the underlying cone is irreducible, then the corresponding PSD slacks are not only doubly nonnegative matrices (DNN) but are extreme rays of the cone of DNN matrices, which correspond to a family of extreme rays not previously described. More surprisingly, we show that, unless the cone is simplicial, PSD slacks not only fail to be completely positive matrices but they also lie outside the cone of completely positive semidefinite matrices. Finally, we show how one can use semidefinite programming to probe the existence of self-dual cones with given combinatorics. Our results are given for polyhedral cones but we also discuss some consequences for negatively self-polar polytopes.
