Abstract:The classical Borsuk's non-retract theorem asserts that a unit sphere in $\mathbb{R}^n$ is not a continuous retract of the unit closed ball. We will show that such a unit sphere is a piecewise continuous retract of the unit closed ball.

Abstract:The purpose of this article is towards systematically characterizing (holomorphic) retracts of domains of holomorphy; to begin with, bounded balanced pseudoconvex domains $B \subset \mathbb{C}^N$. Specifically, we show that every retract of $B$ passing through its center (origin), is the graph of a holomorphic map over a linear subspace of $B$. As for retracts not passing through origin, we obtain the following result: if $B$ is a strictly convex ball and $\rho$ any holomorphic retraction map on $B$ which is submersive at its center, then $Z=\rho(B)$ is the graph of a holomorphic map over a linear subspace of $B$. To deal with a case when $\partial B$ may fail to have sufficiently many extreme points, we consider products of strictly convex balls, with respect to various norms and obtain a complete description of retracts passing through its center. This can be applied to solve a special case of the union problem with a degeneracy, namely: to characterize those Kobayashi corank one complex manifolds $M$ which can be expressed as an increasing union of submanifolds which are biholomorphic to a prescribed homogeneous bounded balanced domain. Results about non-existence of retracts of each possible dimension is established for the simplest non-convex but pseudoconvex domain: the `$\ell^q$-ball' for $0<q<1$; this enables an illustration of applying retracts to establishing biholomorphic inequivalences. To go beyond balanced domains, we then first obtain a complete characterization of retracts of the Hartogs triangle and `analytic complements' thereof. Thereafter, similar characterization results for domains which are neither bounded nor topologically trivial. We conclude by reporting some results on the retracts of $\mathbb{C}^2$.

Abstract:On a manifold or a closed subset of a Euclidean vector space, a retraction enables to move in the direction of a tangent vector while staying on the set. Retractions are a versatile tool to perform computational tasks such as optimization, interpolation, and numerical integration. This paper studies two known definitions of retraction on a closed subset of a Euclidean vector space, one being weaker than the other. Specifically, it shows that, in the context of constrained optimization, the weaker definition should be preferred as it inherits the main property of the other while being less restrictive.

Abstract:A question of F. Kwakkel and V. Markovic on existence of C^1-diffeomorphisms of closed surfaces that permute a dense collection of domains with bounded geometry is answered in the negative. In fact, it is proved that for closed surfaces of genus at least one such diffeomorphisms do not exist regardless of whether they have positive or zero topological entropy.

Abstract:We give a description of the intersection of the zero set with the unit sphere of a zero-free polynomial in the unit ball of $\mathbb{C}^n$. This description leads to the formulation of a conjecture regarding the characterization of polynomials that are cyclic in Dirichlet-type spaces in the unit ball of $\mathbb{C}^n$. Furthermore, we answer partially ascertaining whether an arbitrary polynomial is not cyclic.

Abstract:It is proved that any bounded pseudoconvex domain in C-n is complete w.r.t. the Bergman metric if its boundary can be described locally as the graph of a continuous function in suitable coordinates for C-n. Abstract:The classical Serrin's overdetermined theorem states that a $C^2$ bounded domain, which admits a function with constant Laplacian that satisfies both constant Dirichlet and Neumann boundary conditions, must necessarily be a ball. While extensions of this theorem to non-smooth domains have been explored since the 1990s, the applicability of Serrin's theorem to Lipschitz domains remained unresolved. This paper answers this open question affirmatively. Actually, our approach shows that the result holds for domains that are sets of finite perimeter with a uniform upper bound on the density, and it also allows for slit discontinuities.

Abstract:This article mainly concerns retracts in polydisk, analytic varieties with the H ∞ -extension property and the three-point Pick problem on 𝔻^3 . Arising in the study of Nevanlinna-Pick interpolation on the bidisk, Agler and McCarthy recently discovered a remarkable theorem which characterizes subsets in the bidisk with the polynomial extension property, and in this case, these subsets are retracts. To study H ∞ -extensions of holomorphic functions from subvarieties of polydisk, one naturally is concerned with retracts in polydisk. Under certain mild assumptions, it is shown that subvarieties with H ∞ -extension property are exactly retracts. Furthermore, we apply our argument to determine those retracts whose retractions are unique. In particular, a retract in 𝔻^2 having at least two different retractions is exactly a balanced disk. As an application, we give a sufficient condition of the uniqueness of the solution for the three-point Pick problem on 𝔻^3 .

Abstract:In this paper, we discuss the Weyl problem in warped product spaces. We apply the method of continuity and prove the openness of the Weyl problem. A counterexample is constructed to show that the isometric embedding of the sphere with canonical metric is not unique up to an isometry if the ambient warped product space is not a space form. Then, we study the rigidity of the standard sphere if we fixed its geometric center in the ambient space. Finally, we discuss a Shi-Tam type of inequality for the Schwarzschild manifold as an application of our findings.
Real analytic nonexpansive maps on polyhedral normed spaces

Abstract:If a real analytic nonexpansive map on a polyhedral normed space has a nonempty fixed point set, then we show that there is an isometry from an affine subspace onto the fixed point set. As a corollary, we prove that for any real analytic 1-norm or $\infty$-norm nonexpansive map on $\mathbb{R}^n$, there is a positive integer $q$ such that the period of any periodic orbit divides $q$ and $q$ is the order, or twice the order, of a permutation on $n$ letters. This confirms Nussbaum's $2^n$ Conjecture for $\infty$-norm nonexpansive maps in the special case where the maps are also real analytic.

On the geometry at infinity of manifolds with linear volume growth and nonnegative Ricci curvature

Abstract:We prove that an open manifold with nonnegative Ricci curvature, linear volume growth and noncollapsed ends always splits off a line at infinity. This completes the final step to prove the existence of isoperimetric sets given large volumes in the above setting. We also find that under our assumptions, the diameter of the level sets of any Busemann function are uniformly bounded as opposed to a classical result stating that they can have sublinear growth when ends are collapsing. Moreover, some equivalent characterizations of linear volume growth are given. Finally, we construct an example to show that for manifolds in our setting, although their limit spaces at infinity are always cylinders, the cross sections can be nonhomeomorphic.

Recently, efforts have been made to generalize the Borsuk theorem for the study of differential equations with various symmetries. Abstract:Spherically complete ball spaces provide a framework for the proof of generic fixed point theorems. For the purpose of their application it is important to have methods for the construction of new spherically complete ball spaces from given ones. Given various ball spaces on the same underlying set, we discuss the construction of new ball spaces through set theoretic operations on the balls. A definition of continuity for functions on ball spaces leads to the notion of quotient spaces. Further, we show the existence of products and coproducts and use this to derive a topological category associated with ball spaces.

Abstract:Suppose that $f_1,\ldots ,f_m : S(V)\to R$ are $m$ ($\geq 1$) continuous functions defined on the unit sphere in a Euclidean vector space $V$ of dimension $m+1$ satisfying $f_i(-v)=-f_i(v)$ for all $v\in S(V)$. The classical Borsuk-Ulam theorem asserts that the image of the map $(f_1,\ldots ,f_m) :S(V)\to R^m$ contains $0=(0,\ldots ,0)$. Pursuing ideas in papers of Bárány, Hubard and Jéronimo (2008) and Frick and Wellner (2023), we show that a certain separation property will guarantee that the image contains an $m$-cube.

Abstract:A gap in the proof prevents us to show that surfaces with constant mean curvature closed to 1/2 in H2 X R and having boundary with curvature greater than one, contained in a horizontal section P of H2 X R are topological disks, provided they are contained in one of the two halfspaces determined by P. This is the analogue in H2 X R of a result in R3 by A. Ros and H. Rosenberg [13, Theorem 2].

Abstract:I prove a scalar curvature rigidity theorem for spheres. In particular, I prove that geodesic balls of radii strictly less than $\frac{\pi}{2}$ in $n+1~(n\geq 2)$ dimensional unit sphere are rigid under smooth perturbations that increase scalar curvature preserving the intrinsic and extrinsic geometry of the boundary, and such rigidity result fails for the hemisphere. The proof of this assertion requires the notion of a real Killing connection and solution of the boundary value problem associated with its Dirac operator. The result serves as the sharpest refinement of the now-disproven Min-Oo conjecture.

Abstract:In 1933, Borsuk proposed the following problem: Can every bounded set in $${{\mathbb{E}}^n}$$ be divided into n + 1 subsets of smaller diameter? This problem has been studied by many authors, and a lot of partial results have been discovered. In particular, Kahn and Kalai’s counterexamples surprised the mathematical community in 1993. Nevertheless, the problem is still far away from being completely resolved. This paper presents a broad review on related subjects and, based on a novel reformulation, introduces a computer proof program to deal with this challenging problem.
