Abstract: In 1933, K. Borsuk proposed the following problem: Can every bounded set in $\mathbb{E}^n$ be divided into $n+1$ subsets of smaller diameters? In 1965, V. G. Boltyanski and I. T. Gohberg made the following conjecture: Every bounded set in an $n$-dimensional metric space can be divided into $2^n$ subsets of smaller diameters. In this paper, we prove the following result: Every bounded set in an $n$-dimensional metric space can be divided into $2^{n}((n+1)\log (n+1)+(n+1)\log \log (n+1)+5n+5)$ subsets of smaller diameters.

Abstract:In 1933, Borsuk proposed the following problem: Can every bounded set in $${{\mathbb{E}}^n}$$ be divided into n + 1 subsets of smaller diameter? This problem has been studied by many authors, and a lot of partial results have been discovered. In particular, Kahn and Kalai’s counterexamples surprised the mathematical community in 1993. Nevertheless, the problem is still far away from being completely resolved. This paper presents a broad review on related subjects and, based on a novel reformulation, introduces a computer proof program to deal with this challenging problem.

Abstract:Let Vn+1 be an (n + 1)-dimensional real vector space and (F) over tilde = (alpha) over tilde phi(s) s = (beta) over tilde/(alpha) over tilde, be all (alpha, beta)-metric, where (alpha) over tilde is an Euclidean metric and (beta) over tilde is a one form. Minimal surfaces with respect to the Busemann-Hausdorff measure and the Holmes-Thompson measure are called BH-minimal and HT-minimal surfaces, respectively. We give a Bernstein type theorem for minimal graphs in (Vn+1, (F) over tilde) with n <= 7. Let (F) over tilde (b) = (alpha) over tilde phi(s), s = (beta) over tilde/(alpha) over tilde, be a Minkowski metric with b := parallel to(beta) over tilde parallel to(alpha) over tilde. We use a PDE to characterize the BH-minimal and HT-minimal graph over any hyperplane containing the origin in (Vn+1, (F) over tilde (b)). Then we prove that this PDE is an elliptic equation of mean curvature type when b is an element of [0, is an element of) for sonic constant is an element of > 0 and give a Bernstein type theorem for BH-minimal surface in (V-3, (F) over tilde (b)). BH-minimal cones with an isolated singularity at the origin are also given.

Borsuk and Vázsonyi problems through Reuleaux polyhedra

Abstract:The Borsuk conjecture and the Vázsonyi problem are two attractive and famous questions in discrete and combinatorial geometry, both based on the notion of diameter of a bounded sets. In this paper, we present an equivalence between the critical sets with Borsuk number 4 in $\mathbb{R}^3$ and the minimal structures for the Vázsonyi problem by using the well-known Reuleaux polyhedra. The latter lead to a full characterization of all finite sets in $\mathbb{R}^3$ with Borsuk number 4. The proof of such equivalence needs various ingredients, in particular, we proved a conjecture dealing with strongly critical configuration for the Vázsonyi problem and showed that the diameter graph arising from involutive polyhedra is vertex (and edge) 4-critical.

Topological control for min-max free boundary minimal surfaces

Abstract:We establish general bounds on the topology of free boundary minimal surfaces obtained via min-max methods in compact, three-dimensional ambient manifolds with mean convex boundary. We prove that the first Betti number is lower semicontinuous along min-max sequences converging in the sense of varifolds to free boundary minimal surfaces. In the orientable case, we obtain an even stronger result which implies that if the number of boundary components increases in the varifold limit, then the genus decreases at least as much. We also present several compelling applications, such as the variational construction of a free boundary minimal trinoid in the Euclidean unit ball.

Abstract:In 1993, Kahn and Kalai famously constructed a sequence of finite sets in $d$-dimensional Euclidean spaces that cannot be partitioned into less than $(1.203\ldots+o(1))^{\sqrt{d}}$ parts of smaller diameter. Their method works not only for the Euclidean, but for all $\ell_p$-spaces as well. In this short note, we observe that the larger the value of $p$, the stronger this construction becomes.

Abstract:We investigate closed subsets (subsemigroups, resp.) of compact-like topological spaces (semigroups, resp.). We show that each Hausdorff topological space is a closed subspace of some Hausdorff ω-bounded pracompact topological space and describe open dense subspaces of countably pracompact topological spaces. We construct a pseudocompact topological semigroup which contains the bicyclic monoid as a closed subsemigroup. This example provides an affirmative answer to a question posed by Banakh, Dimitrova, and Gutik in [4]. Also, we show that the semigroup of ω×ω-matrix units cannot be embedded into a Hausdorff topological semigroup whose space is weakly H-closed.

Abstract:Given a finite group G acting freely on a compact metric space M , and , we define the G -Borsuk graph on M by drawing edges whenever there is a non-identity such that . We show that when is small, its chromatic number is determined by the topology of M via its G -covering number, which is the minimum k such that there is a closed cover with for all . We are interested in bounding this number. We give lower bounds using G -actions on Hom-complexes, and upper bounds using a recursive formula on the dimension of M . We conjecture that the true chromatic number coincides with the lower bound, and give computational evidence. We also study random G -Borsuk graphs, which are random induced subgraphs. For these, we compute thresholds for that guarantee that the chromatic number is still that of the whole G -Borsuk graph. Our results are tight (up to a constant) when the G -index and dimension of M coincide.

Abstract:For any subgroup H of G, we will denote by V, the fixed point subspace of H-action, i.e., I/,= (xEIR~) T,x=x’dh~H}. For xrz(WN, let O(x)= ( T,x 1 g E G} be the G-orbit of 3~. If G is finite, we let l(x) denote the order of O(x). Suppose that !2 is an open bounded G-invariant set in IWN andf: S + [WN is a continuous G-equivariant map. If 0 #f(X?), the Brouwer degree deg(f, 52,O) is well defined. It is known that we can obtain important informations on deg(f, Q, 0) if the G-action on aBN is of some special types. For example, in the case that G = Z, = (0, 1 }, T, = I and T, = -Z, where I is the identity transformation on IWN, the Borsuk theorem asserts that deg(f, 52, 0) is an odd number provided 0 E Q. Recently, efforts have been made to generalize the Borsuk theorem for the study of differential equations with various symmetries. Under the assumption that VG = {0), Marzantowicz [4] obtains the following results. (In the sequel, we always assume that .C2 is an open bounded G-invariant subset of RN.)

Abstract:A topological sphere theorem is obtained from the point of view of submanifold geometry. An important scalar is defined by the mean curvature and the squared norm of the second fundamental form of an oriented complete submanifold Mn in a space form of nonnegative sectional curvature. If the infimum of this scalar is negative, we then prove that the Ricci curvature of Mn has a positive lower bound. Making use of the Lawson–Simons formula for the nonexistence of stable k-currents, we eliminate Hk (Mn, Z) for all 1 ` k ` n − 1.We then observe that the fundamental group of Mn is trivial. It should be emphasized that our result is optimal.

Abstract:Let X be an uncountable Polish space. Lubica Hola showed recently that there are 2^continuum many quasi-continuous real valued functions defined on the uncountable Polish space that are not Borel measurable. Inspired by Hola's result, we are extending it in two directions. First, we prove that the same conclusion holds when X is an uncountable Polish space and Y is any Hausdorff space with |Y|>1 then the family of all non-Borel measurable quasi-continuous functions has cardinality at least 2^continuum. Secondly, we show that the family of quasi-continuous non Borel functions may contain big algebraic structures.

Abstract:We generate anti-self-polar polytopes via a numerical implementation of the gradient flow induced by the diameter functional on the space of all finite subsets of the sphere, and prove related results on the critical points of the diameter functional as well as results about the combinatorics of such polytopes. We also discuss potential connections to Borsuk's conjecture.

Abstract:For a finite group $H$ and connected topological spaces $X$ and $Y$ such that $X$ is endowed with a free left $H$-action $\tau$, we provide a geometric condition in terms of the existence of a commutative diagram of spaces (arising from the triple $(X,Y;\tau)$) to decide whether the Borsuk--Ulam property holds for based homotopy classes $\alpha\in[X,Y]_0$, as well as for free homotopy classes $\alpha\in[X,Y]$. Here, a homotopy class $\alpha$ is said to satisfy the Borsuk--Ulam property if, for each of its representatives $f\in\alpha$, there exists an $H$-orbit where $f$ fails to be injective. Our geometric characterization is attained by constructing an $H$-equivariant map from $X$ to the classical configuration space $F_{|H|}(Y)$. We derive an algebraic condition from the geometric characterisation, and show that the former one is in fact equivalent to the latter one when $X$ and $Y$ are aspherical. We then specialize to the 1-dimensional case, i.e., when $X$ is an arbitrary connected graph, $H$ is cyclic, and $Y$ is either an interval, a circle, or their wedge sum. The graph-braid-group ingredient in our characterizations is then effectively controlled through the use of discrete Morse theory.

Abstract:We study generic properties of topological groups in the sense of Baire category. First, we investigate countably infinite groups. We extend a classical result of B. H. Neumann, H. Simmons and A. Macintyre on algebraically closed groups and the word problem. Recently, I. Goldbring, S. Kunnawalkam Elayavalli, and Y. Lodha proved that every isomorphism class is meager among countably infinite groups. In contrast, it follows from the work of W. Hodges on model-theoretic forcing that there exists a comeager isomorphism class among countably infinite abelian groups. We present a new elementary proof of this result. Then, we turn to compact metrizable abelian groups. We use Pontryagin duality to show that there is a comeager isomorphism class among compact metrizable abelian groups. We discuss its connections to the countably infinite case. Finally, we study compact metrizable groups. We prove that the generic compact metrizable group is neither connected nor totally disconnected; also it is neither torsion-free nor a torsion group.
