Abstract:The extension of local de Sitter thermodynamics into $f(\mathcal{R})$ gravity provides a new basis to unify the dielectric and electroweak vacua. We suggest the electroweak theory emerges from the ergodic mixing of charge density under local de Sitter thermodynamics and introduce the concept of lab-accessible topological defects.

Abstract:The failure to calculate the vacuum energy is a central problem in theoretical physics. Presumably the problem arises from the insistent use of effective field theory reasoning in a context that is well beyond its intended scope. If one follows this path, one is led inevitably to statistical or anthropic reasoning for observations. It appears that a more palatable resolution of the vacuum energy problem requires some form of UV/IR feedback. In this paper we take the point of view that such feedback can be thought of as arising by defining a notion of quantum space-time. We reformulate the regularized computation of vacuum energy in such a way that it can be interpreted in terms of a sum over elementary phase space volumes, that we identify with a ground state degeneracy. This observation yields a precise notion of UV/IR feedback, while leaving a scale unfixed. Here we argue that holography can be thought to provide a key piece of information: we show that equating this microscopic ground state degeneracy with macroscopic gravitational entropy yields a prediction for the vacuum energy that can easily be consistent with observations. Essentially, the smallness of the vacuum energy is tied to the large size of the Universe. We discuss how within this scenario notions of effective field theory can go so wrong.

Abstract:The quantum gravity vacuum must contain virtual fluctuations of black hole microstates. These extended-sized fluctuations get "crushed" when a closed trapped surface forms, and turn into on-shell "fuzzball" states that resolve the information puzzle. We argue that these same fluctuations can get "stretched" by the anti-trapped surfaces in an expanding cosmology, and that this stretching generates vacuum energy. The stretching happens when the Hubble deceleration reduces quickly, which happens whenever the pressure drops quickly. We thus get an inflation-scale vacuum energy when the heavy GUTS particles become nonrelativistic, and again a small vacuum energy when the radiation phase turns to dust. The expansion law in the radiation phase does not allow stretching, in agreement with the observed irrelevance of vacuum energy in that phase.

Abstract:(1+1) -dimensional locally de Sitter–Friedmann-Robertson-Walker cosmologies with compact spatial sections allow cosh, sinh, and exponential evolution laws, each with a freely specifiable spatial circumference parameter, and the value of this parameter has an invariant geometric meaning for the cosh and sinh evolution laws. We identify geometrically preferred states for a quantized massive scalar field on these cosmologies, some singled out by adiabatic criteria in the distant past, with an ambiguity remaining due to a massive zero mode, and others induced from the Euclidean vacuum on standard ( 1+1 )-dimensional de Sitter space by a quotient construction. We show that a comoving quantum observer, modelled as an Unruh-DeWitt detector, can distinguish these states from the Euclidean vacuum on standard de Sitter space. Numerical plots are given in selected parameter regimes. We also evaluate the field's stress-energy tensor expectation value for those states that are induced from the Euclidean vacuum by a quotient construction. De Sitter Local Thermodynamics in f(R) Gravity

Abstract:We consider the local thermodynamics of the de Sitter state in the f ( ) gravity. The local temperature, which is the same for all points of the de Sitter space, is T = H /π, where H is the Hubble parameter. It is twice larger than the Gibbons–Hawking temperature of the cosmological horizon, T GH = H /2π. The local temperature is not related to the cosmological horizon. It determines the rate of the activation processes, which are possible in the de Sitter environment. The typical example is the process of the ionization of the atom in the de Sitter environment, which rate is determined by temperature T = H /π. The local temperature determines the local entropy of the de Sitter vacuum state, and this allows to calculate the total entropy inside the cosmological horizon. The result reproduces the Gibbons–Hawking area law, which corresponds to the Wald entropy, S hor = 4π KA . Here K is the effective gravitational coupling, K = df / d . In the local thermodynamic approach, K is the thermodynamic variable, which is conjugate to the Ricci scalar curvature R . The holographic connection between the bulk entropy of the Hubble volume and the surface entropy of the cosmological horizon supports the suggestion that the de Sitter quantum vacuum is characterized by the local thermodynamics with the local temperature T = H /π. The local temperature T = H /π of the de Sitter vacuum suggests that the de Sitter vacuum is locally unstable towards the creation of matter and its further heating. The decay of the de Sitter vacuum due to such processes determines the quantum breaking time of the space-times with positive cosmological constant.

Abstract:The validity of the ergodic hypothesis in quantum systems can be rephrased in the form of the eigenstate thermalization hypothesis (ETH), a set of statistical properties for the matrix elements of local observables in energy eigenstates, which is expected to hold in any ergodic system. We test the ETH in a nonintegrable model of relativistic quantum field theory (QFT) using the numerical method of Hamiltonian truncation in combination with analytical arguments based on Lorentz symmetry and renormalization group theory. We find that there is an infinite sequence of eigenstates with the characteristics of quantum many-body scars—that is, exceptional eigenstates with observable expectation values that lie far from thermal values—and we show that these states are one-quasiparticle states. We argue that in the thermodynamic limit the eigenstates cover the entire area between two diverging lines: the line of one-quasiparticle states, whose direction is dictated by relativistic kinematics, and the thermal average line. Abstract:Thermodynamics of local causal horizons have been shown to encode the information necessary to derive the equations governing the gravitational dynamics. We have previously shown that, in the presence of matter, this derivation further implies quantum phenomenological corrections to gravitational dynamics. Herein, we study whether similar corrections also occur in vacuum. We show that, under the assumptions of locality and local Lorentz invariance of physics, the vacuum dynamics is prescribed by the Einstein equations. We also discuss an alternative paradigm which assumes the existence of a preferred direction of time (much like in Einstein-aether or Hořava-Lifshitz gravity). Then, we find an modified gravitational dynamics in which Ricci curvature is sourced by Bel-Robinson super-energy.

Abstract:We discuss the consequences of unique symmetry of de Sitter spacetime, which is invariant under the modified translations, ${\bf r}\rightarrow {\bf r} -e^{Ht}{\bf a}$, where $H$ is the Hubble parameter. Due to this symmetry, all the comoving observers at any point of the de Sitter space perceive the de Sitter environment as the thermal bath with temperature $T=H/\pi$, which is twice larger than the Gibbons-Hawking temperature of the cosmological horizon. This leads to the heat exchange between gravity and matter, and to instability of de Sitter state towards the creation of matter, its further heating, and finally to the decay of the de Sitter state. The temperature $T=H/\pi$ determines different processes in the de Sitter environment, which are not possible in Minkowski vacuum, such as the process of ionization of an atom. This temperature also determines the local entropy of the de Sitter vacuum state, and this allows us to calculate the total entropy inside the cosmological horizon. The result reproduces the Gibbons-Hawking area law, which is related to the cosmological horizon, $S_{\rm hor}=4\pi KA$, where $K=1/(16\pi G)$. This supports the holographic properties of the cosmological event horizon. We extend the consideration of the local thermodynamics of the de Sitter state using the $f({\cal R})$ gravity. In this thermodynamics, the Ricci scalar curvature ${\cal R}$ and the effective gravitational coupling $K$ are thermodynamically conjugate variables. The holographic connection between the bulk entropy of the Hubble volume and the surface entropy of the cosmological horizon remains the same. Such connection takes place only in the $3+1$ spacetime, where there is the special symmetry due to which the variables $K$ and ${\cal R}$ have the same dimensionality. We also consider the lessons from the de Sitter symmetry for the thermodynamics of black and white holes.

Thermodynamic formulation of vacuum energy density in flat spacetime and potential implications for the cosmological constant

Abstract:We propose a thermodynamical definition of the vacuum energy density $\rho_{\rm vac}$, defined as $\langle 0| T_{\mu\nu} |0\rangle = - \rho_{\rm vac} \, g_{\mu\nu}$, in quantum field theory in flat Minkowski space in $D$ spacetime dimensions, which can be computed in the limit of high temperature, namely in the limit $\beta = 1/T \to 0$. It takes the form $\rho_{\rm vac} = {\rm const} \cdot m^D$ where $m$ is a fundamental mass scale and ${\rm "const"}$ is a computable constant which can be positive or negative. Due to modular invariance $\rho_{\rm vac}$ can also be computed in a different non-thermodynamic channel where one spatial dimension is compactifed on a circle of circumference $\beta$ and we confirm this modularity for free massive theories for both bosons and fermions for $D=2,3,4$. We list various properties of $\rho_{\rm vac}$ that are generally required, for instance $\rho_{\rm vac}=0$ for conformal field theories, and others, such as the constraint that $\rho_{\rm vac}$ has opposite signs for free bosons verses fermions of the same mass, which is related to constraints from supersymmetry. Using the Thermodynamic Bethe Ansatz we compute $\rho_{\rm vac}$ exactly for 2 classes of integrable QFT's in $2D$ and interpreting some previously known results. We apply our definition of $\rho_{\rm vac}$ to Lattice QCD data with two light quarks (up and down) and one additional massive flavor (the strange quark), and find it is negative, $\rho_{\rm vac} \approx - ( 200 \, {\rm MeV} )^4$. Finally we make some remarks on the Cosmological Constant Problem since $\rho_{\rm vac}$ is central to any discussion of it.

Abstract:As a point of departure it is suggested that Quantum Cosmology is a topological concept independent from metrical constraints. Methods of continuous topological evolution and topological thermodynamics are used to construct a cosmological model of the present universe, using the techniques based upon Cartan's theory of exterior differential systems. Thermodynamic domains, which are either Open, Closed, Isolated, or in Equilibrium, can be put into correspondence with topological systems of Pfaff topological dimension 4, 3, 2 and 1. If the environment of the universe is assumed to be a physical vacuum of Pfaff topological dimension 4, then continuous but irreversible topological evolution can cause the emergence of topologically coherent defect structures of Pfaff topological dimension less than 4. As galaxies and stars exchange radiation but not matter with the environment, they are emergent topological defects of Pfaff topological dimension 3 which are far from equilibrium. DeRham topological theory of period integrals over closed but not exact exterior differential systems leads to the emergence of quantized, deformable, but topologically coherent, singular macrostates at all scales. The method leads to the conjecture that dark matter and energy is represented by those thermodynamic topological defect structures of Pfaff dimension 2 or less.
Gravity from thermodynamics: optimal transport and negative effective dimensions

Abstract:We prove an equivalence between the classical equations of motion governing vacuum gravity compactifications (and more general warped-product spacetimes) and a concavity property of entropy under time evolution. This is obtained by linking the theory of optimal transport to the Raychaudhuri equation in the internal space, where the warp factor introduces effective notions of curvature and (negative) internal dimension. When the Reduced Energy Condition is satisfied, concavity can be characterized in terms of the cosmological constant $\Lambda$; as a consequence, the masses of the spin-two Kaluza-Klein fields obey bounds in terms of $\Lambda$ alone. We show that some Cheeger bounds on the KK spectrum hold even without assuming synthetic Ricci lower bounds, in the large class of infinitesimally Hilbertian metric measure spaces, which includes D-brane and O-plane singularities. As an application, we show how some approximate string theory solutions in the literature achieve scale separation, and we construct a new explicit parametrically scale-separated AdS solution of M-theory supported by Casimir energy.

Abstract:Since almost all phenomena electrodynamics deal with have energy scales much lower than the Higgs mass energy and intermediate boson energy, electrodynamics of continuous media should be applicable and the constitutive relation of spacetime/vacuum should be local and linear. What is the key characteristic of the spacetime/vacuum? It is the Weak Equivalence Principle (WEP I) for photons/wave packets of light which states that the spacetime trajectory of light in a gravitational field depends only on its initial position and direction of propagation, and does not depend on its frequency (energy) and polarization, i.e. nonbirefringence of light propagation in spacetime/vacuum. With this principle it is proved by the author in 1981 in the weak field limit, and by Lammerzahl and Hehl in 2004 together with Favaro and Bergamin in 2011 without assuming the weak-field condition that the constitutive tensor must be of the core metric form with only two additional degrees of freedom - the pseudoscalar (Abelian axion or EM axion) degree of freedom and the scalar (dilaton) degree of freedom (i.e. metric with axion and dilaton). In this paper, we review this connection and the ultrahigh precision empirical tests of nonbirefringence together with present status of tests of cosmic Abelian axion and dilaton. If the stronger version of WEP is assumed, i.e. WEP II for photons (wave packets of light) which states in addition to WEP I also that the polarization state of the light would not change (e.g. no polarization rotation for linear polarized light) and no amplification/attenuation of light, then no Abelian (EM) axion and no dilaton, and we have a pure metric theory.

Abstract:We show that volume-preserving diffeomorphisms and the chemical shift symmetry defining relativistic Lagrangian ideal fluid dynamics can be derived as an emerging symmetry when ergodicity is assumed to apply locally in a way that is invariant under smooth spacetime foliations. This can be used as a way to derive the ideal hydrodynamic limit in a strongly coupled but strongly fluctuating medium. Bulk-boundary thermodynamic equivalence: a topology viewpoint

Abstract:Setting the cosmological constant to be dynamical, we study the bulk and boundary thermodynamics of charged Anti-de Sitter black holes. We develop mass/energy formulas in terms of thermodynamic state functions for the extended thermodynamics, mixed thermodynamics, and boundary conformal field theory thermodynamics. We employ the residue method to study the topological properties of the phase transitions. Our analysis reveals that the bulk and boundary thermodynamics are topologically equivalent for both criticalities and first-order phase transitions in the canonical ensembles, as well as for the Hawking-Page(-like) phase transitions in the grand canonical ensembles. Additionally, those three kinds of phase transitions are shown to be distinguished by their unique topological charges. Our results exemplify the gravity-gauge duality in terms of topology.

From de Sitter to de Sitter: A Thermal Approach to Running Vacuum Cosmology and the Non-Canonical Scalar Field Description

Abstract:The entire classical cosmological history between two extreme de Sitter vacuum solutions is discussed based on Einstein's equations and non-equilibrium thermodynamics. The initial non-singular de Sitter state is characterised by a very high energy scale which is equal or smaller than the reduced Planck mass. It is structurally unstable and all the continuous created matter, energy and entropy of the material component comes from the irreversible flow powered by the primeval vacuum energy density. The analytical expression describing the running vacuum is obtained from the thermal approach. It opens a new perspective to solve the old puzzles and current observational challenges plaguing the cosmic concordance model driven by a rigid vacuum. Such a scenario is also modelled through a non-canonical scalar field. It is demonstrated that the resulting scalar field model is shown to be step by step a faithful analytical representation of the thermal running vacuum cosmology.

Weyl-Einsteinian-Cubic Gravity

Abstract:We construct a Weyl-gauging of strongly coupled Einsteinian-Cubic gravity (ECG) in Weyl's geometry via upgraded Weyl's curvature tensors, which include abelian gauge fields, and properly tuned compensating real scalar fields. The model is free from any dimensionful parameters. The bare ECG emerges as the lower energy limit of the Weyl-ECG in the local non-conformal-invariant vacua (i.e., broken phase) in the maximally symmetric spacetimes fixing the vacuum expectation value of the scalar field to the Planck mass scale. Here, the natural presence of (anti-) de Sitter backgrounds spontaneously breaks Weyl's local conformal symmetry akin to the Higgs mechanism, while it is radiatively broken at the renormalization scale at the one-loop level in flat vacua through the Coleman-Weinberg mechanism. The model allows anti-de Sitter and flat spaces but does not allow de Sitter to be vacuum spacetime solutions. The properties of the model deserve further exploration, specifically, those of nonperturbative (e.g., instantons and/or anti-instantons) contributions, for example, in the resurgence or tachyon condensation context requires detailed study.

The universality of black hole thermodynamics

Abstract:The thermodynamic properties of black holes -- temperature, entropy and radiation rates -- are usually associated with the presence of a horizon. We argue that any Extremely Compact Object (ECO) must have the {\it same} thermodynamic properties. Quantum fields just outside the surface of an ECO have a large negative Casimir energy similar to the Boulware vacuum of black holes. If the thermal radiation emanating from the ECO does not fill the near-surface region at the local Unruh temperature, then we find that no solution of gravity equations is possible. In string theory, black holes microstates are horizonless quantum objects called fuzzballs that are expected to have a surface $\sim l_p$ outside $r=2GM$; thus the information puzzle is resolved while preserving the semiclassical thermodynamics of black holes.

Abstract:We discuss phenomenology of quantum vacuum. Phenomenology of macroscopic systems has three sources: thermodynamics, topology and symmetry. Momentum space topology determines the universality classes of fermionic vacua. The vacuum in its massless state belongs to the Fermi-point universality class, which has topologically protected fermionic quasiparticles. At low energy they behave as relativistic massless Weyl fermions. Gauge fields and gravity emerge together with Weyl fermions at low energy. Thermodynamics of the self-sustained vacuum allows us to treat the problems related to the vacuum energy: the cosmological constant problems. The natural value of the energy density of the equilibrium the self-sustained vacuum is zero. Cosmology is the process of relaxation of vacuum towards the equilibrium state. The present value of the cosmological constant is very small compared to the Planck scale, because the present Universe is very old and thus is close to equilibrium.

Abstract:We reconsider the thermodynamics of anti-de Sitter black holes in the context of gauge-gravity duality. In this new setting, where both the cosmological constant Λ and the gravitational Newton's constant G are varied in the bulk, we rewrite the first law in a new form containing both Λ (associated with thermodynamic pressure) and the central charge C of the dual conformal field theory and their conjugate variables. We obtain a novel thermodynamic volume, in turn leading to a new understanding of the Van der Waals behavior of charged anti-de Sitter black holes in which phase changes are governed by the degrees of freedom in the conformal field theory. Compared to the "old" P-V criticality, this new criticality is "universal" (independent of the bulk pressure) and directly relates to the thermodynamics of the dual field theory and its central charge.
