Abstract:Since almost all phenomena electrodynamics deal with have energy scales much lower than the Higgs mass energy and intermediate boson energy, electrodynamics of continuous media should be applicable and the constitutive relation of spacetime/vacuum should be local and linear. What is the key characteristic of the spacetime/vacuum? It is the Weak Equivalence Principle (WEP I) for photons/wave packets of light which states that the spacetime trajectory of light in a gravitational field depends only on its initial position and direction of propagation, and does not depend on its frequency (energy) and polarization, i.e. nonbirefringence of light propagation in spacetime/vacuum. With this principle it is proved by the author in 1981 in the weak field limit, and by Lammerzahl and Hehl in 2004 together with Favaro and Bergamin in 2011 without assuming the weak-field condition that the constitutive tensor must be of the core metric form with only two additional degrees of freedom - the pseudoscalar (Abelian axion or EM axion) degree of freedom and the scalar (dilaton) degree of freedom (i.e. metric with axion and dilaton). In this paper, we review this connection and the ultrahigh precision empirical tests of nonbirefringence together with present status of tests of cosmic Abelian axion and dilaton. If the stronger version of WEP is assumed, i.e. WEP II for photons (wave packets of light) which states in addition to WEP I also that the polarization state of the light would not change (e.g. no polarization rotation for linear polarized light) and no amplification/attenuation of light, then no Abelian (EM) axion and no dilaton, and we have a pure metric theory.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is about the relationship between electromagnetism and the spacetime structure, especially how to construct the spacetime structure (including metrics, axion fields and inflation fields) from experiments and observations. Specifically, the author explores how the propagation characteristics of photons or light wave packets limit the constitutive tensor of spacetime under the Weak Equivalence Principle (WEP I), and further derives the specific form of the spacetime metric. Through these studies, the paper aims to verify the validity of the Weak Equivalence Principle (especially for the non - birefringence property of photons) and explore whether there are additional degrees of freedom, such as Abelian axions and dilatons. ### Main problems: 1. **Weak Equivalence Principle (WEP I)**: The paper explores whether the propagation trajectory of photons in the gravitational field depends only on their initial position and propagation direction, and is not affected by frequency (energy) and polarization state. This principle is equivalent to the non - birefringence property of light propagation. 2. **Construction of spacetime structure**: Based on WEP I, the paper derives the form of the spacetime constitutive tensor and verifies these theoretical predictions through experimental data. Specifically, the author constrains the spacetime constitutive tensor through observational data such as pulsar signal propagation, radio galaxy observations, gamma - ray bursts (GRB), cosmic microwave background (CMB) spectrum measurements, and cosmic polarization rotation experiments. 3. **Existence of additional degrees of freedom**: The paper also discusses whether there are other degrees of freedom, such as Abelian axions and dilatons, and the influence of these degrees of freedom on light propagation. In particular, the paper explores the influence of pseudoscalar - photon interaction and dilaton coupling on light polarization rotation and amplification/attenuation effects. ### Mathematical formulas: - **Electromagnetic field strength tensor**: \[ F_{ij}=A_{j, i}-A_{i, j} \] - **Maxwell's equations**: \[ (\chi^{ijkl}A_{k, lj}) = 0 \] - **Dispersion relation under low - order approximation**: \[ \chi^{(0)ijkl}A^{(0)}_{k, lj}=0 \] - **First - order correction**: \[ \chi^{(1)ijkl}A^{(0)}_{k, lj}+\chi^{(0)ijkl}A^{(1)}_{k, lj}=0 \] - **Zero - order solution**: \[ A^{(0)}=(0, A^{(0)}_1, A^{(0)}_2, 0),\quad\omega = k+O(1) \] - **First - order correction term**: \[ A^{(1)}_0+A^{(1)}_3 = 2(\chi^{(1)3013}-\chi^{(1)3010})A^{(0)}_1+2(\chi^{(1)3023}-\chi^{(1)3020})A^{(0)}_2+O(2) \] - **Dispersion relation matrix**: \[ \begin{vmatrix} \frac{1}{2}(\omega^2 - k^2)-k^2A^{(1)}&-k^2B\\ -k^2B&\frac{1}{2}(\omega^2 - k^2)-k^2A^{(2)} \end{vmatrix}=0 \] Through the analysis of these formulas and experimental data, the paper provides an in - depth understanding of the relationship between spacetime structure and electromagnetism and verifies the validity of the Weak Equivalence Principle.
