Abstract:We introduce and study spaces of multivariate functions of bounded variation generalizing the classical Jordan and Wiener spaces. Multivariate generalizations of the Jordan space were given by several prominent researchers but each of them preserved only some special properties of the space used further in few selected applications. Unlike this the multivariate generalization of the Jordan space presented in this paper preserves all known and reveals some previously unknown properties of the space. These, in turn, are special cases of the basic properties of the introduced spaces proved in the paper. They, in particular, include results on discontinuity sets and pointwise differentiability of the bounded variation functions and their Luzin type and $C^\infty$ approximation. Moreover, the second part of the paper presents results on Banach structure of function spaces of bounded variation, namely, atomic decomposition and constructive characterization of their predual spaces and then constructive characterization of preduals of the last ones and following from here the so-called two-stars theorems relating second duals of separable subspaces of "vanishing variation" to the (nonseparable) spaces of bounded variation.

Abstract:In this paper, we study functions of bounded variation on a complete and connected metric space with finite one-dimensional Hausdorff measure. The definition of BV functions on a compact interval based on pointwise variation is extended to this general setting. We show this definition of BV functions is equivalent to the BV functions introduced by Miranda. Furthermore, we study the necessity of conditions on the underlying space in Federer's characterization of sets of finite perimeter on metric measure spaces. In particular, our examples show that the doubling and Poincaré inequality conditions are essential in showing that a set has finite perimeter if the codimension one Hausdorff measure of the measure-theoretic boundary is finite.

Abstract:In this work, the notion of function of bounded variation in 2-normed spaces was established (Definition 4.2), the set of functions of bounded $ (2, k) $-variation was endowed with a norm (Theorem 4.5), and it was proved that such a set is a Banach space (Theorem 4.6). In addition, the fundamental properties of the functions of bounded $ (2, k) $-variation in the formalism of 2-Hilbert and 2-normed spaces were studied (see Theorems 4.1, 4.3, 4.4). Also, it was shown how to endow a 2-normed space with a function of bounded $ (2, k) $-variation from a classical Hilbert space (Proposition 4.1). A series of examples and counterexamples are presented that enrich the results obtained in this work (4.1 and 4.2).

Abstract:SIAM Journal on Mathematical Analysis, Volume 56, Issue 2, Page 1903-1935, April 2024. Motivated by problems where jumps across lower dimensional subsets and sharp transitions across interfaces are of interest, this paper studies the properties of fractional bounded variation ([math])-type spaces. Two different natural fractional analogs of classical [math] are considered: [math], a space induced from the Riesz-fractional gradient that has been recently studied by Comi–Stefani; and [math], induced by the Gagliardo-type fractional gradient often used in Dirichlet forms and Peridynamics—this one is naturally related to the Caffarelli–Roquejoffre–Savin fractional perimeter. Our main theoretical result is that the latter [math] actually corresponds to the Gagliardo–Slobodeckij space [math]. As an application, using the properties of these spaces, novel image denoising models are introduced and their corresponding Fenchel predual formulations are derived. The latter requires density of smooth functions with compact support. We establish this density property for convex domains.

Abstract:A natural class of ideals, almost isometric ideals, of Banach spaces is defined and studied. The motivation for working with this class of subspaces is our observation that they inherit diameter 2 properties and the Daugavet property. Lindenstrauss spaces are known to be the class of Banach spaces that are ideals in every superspace; we show that being an almost isometric ideal in every superspace characterizes the class of Gurariy spaces.

Abstract:This paper is devoted to investigating the sequence of some linear functionals in the space $BV$ of finite variation functions. We prove that under certain conditions this sequence is bounded. We also prove that this result is sharp. In particular, the obtained results can be used to study convergence of some general Fourier series. Moreover, the obtained conditions seem to be new and useful also for classical orthonormal systems.

Abstract:This paper develops new extremal principles of variational analysis that are motivated by applications to constrained problems of stochastic programming and semi-infinite programming without smoothness and/or convexity assumptions. These extremal principles concern measurable set-valued mappings/multifunctions with values in finite-dimensional spaces and are established in both approximate and exact forms. The obtained principles are instrumental to derive via variational approaches integral representations and upper estimates of regular and limiting normals cones to essential intersections of sets defined by measurable multifunctions, which are in turn crucial for novel applications to stochastic and semi-infinite programming.

Abstract:Many authors, e.g., Bavrin, Jakubowski, Liczberski, Pfaltzgraff, Sitarski, Suffridge, and Stankiewicz, have discussed some families of holomorphic functions of several complex variables described by some geometrical or analytical conditions. We consider a family of holomorphic functions of several complex variables described in n-circular domain of the space C n . We investigate relations between this family and some of type of Bavrin’s families. We give estimates of G-balance of k-homogeneous polynomial, a distortion type theorem and a sufficient condition for functions belonging to this family. Furthermore, we present some examples of functions from the considered class.

Abstract:In this article, we consider the bounded variation capacity (BV capacity) and characterize the Sobolev-type inequalities related to BV functions in a general framework of strictly local Dirichlet spaces with a doubling measure via the BV capacity. Under a weak Bakry-Émery curvature-type condition, we give the connection between the Hausdorff measure and the Hausdorff capacity, and discover some capacitary inequalities and Maz'ya-Sobolev inequalities for BV functions. The De Giorgi characterization for total variation is also obtained with a quasi-Bakry-Émery curvature condition. It should be noted that the results in this article are proved if the Dirichlet space supports the weak ( 1 , 2 ) -Poincaré inequality instead of the weak ( 1 , 1 ) -Poincaré inequality compared with the results in the previous references.

Abstract:Let be a non-empty and non singleton closed interval and $P=\{a=x_0<\cdots <x_n=b\}$ is a partition of it. Then is said to be a function of r -bounded variation, if the expression is bounded for all possible partitions like P . One of the main results of the paper deals with the generalization of the classical Jordan decomposition theorem. We establish that for , a function of r -bounded variation can be written as the difference of two monotone functions. While for , under minimal assumptions such a function can be treated as an approximately monotone function which can be closely approximated by a nondecreasing majorant. We also prove that for $0<r_1<r_2$ , the function class of -bounded variation is contained in the class of functions satisfying -bounded variations. Abstract:The main aim of this paper is to provide characterizations of Birkhoff-James orthogonality (BJ-orthogonality in short) in a number of families of Banach spaces in terms of the elements of significant subsets of the unit ball of their dual spaces, which makes the characterizations more applicable. The tool to do so is a fine study of the abstract numerical range and its relation with the BJ-orthogonality. Among other results, we provide a characterization of BJ-orthogonality for spaces of vector-valued bounded functions in terms of the domain set and the dual of the target space, which is applied to get results for spaces of vector-valued continuous functions, uniform algebras, Lipschitz maps, injective tensor products, bounded linear operators with respect to the operator norm and to the numerical radius, multilinear maps, and polynomials. Next, we study possible extensions of the well-known Bhatia-Šemrl theorem on BJ-orthogonality of matrices, showing results in spaces of vector-valued continuous functions, compact linear operators on reflexive spaces, and finite Blaschke products. Finally, we find applications of our results to the study of spear vectors and spear operators. We show that no smooth point of a Banach space can be BJ-orthogonal to a spear vector of $Z$. As a consequence, if $X$ is a Banach space containing strongly exposed points and $Y$ is a smooth Banach space with dimension at least two, then there are no spear operators from $X$ to $Y$. Particularizing this result to the identity operator, we show that a smooth Banach space containing strongly exposed points has numerical index strictly smaller than one. These latter results partially solve some open problems.

Abstract:The main purpose of this paper is to develop the theory of product Hardy spaces built on Banach lattices on . First we introduce new product Hardy spaces associated with ball quasi-Banach function spaces via applying the Littlewood–Paley–Stein theory. Then we establish a decomposition theorem for in terms of the discrete Calderón's identity. Moreover, we explore some useful and general extrapolation theorems of Rubio de Francia on and give some applications to boundedness of operators. Finally, we conclude that the bi-parameter singular integral operators are bounded from to itself and bounded from to via extrapolation. The main results obtained in this paper have a wide range of generality. Especially, we can apply these results to many concrete examples of ball quasi-Banach function spaces, including product Herz spaces, weighted product Morrey spaces and product Orlicz spaces.

Abstract:Motivated by new examples of functional Banach spaces over the unit disk, arising as the symbol spaces in the study of random analytic functions, for which the monomials exhibit features of an unconditional basis yet they often don't even form a Schauder basis, we introduce a notion called solid basis for Banach spaces and p-Banach spaces and study its properties. Besides justifying the rich existence of solid bases, we study their relationship with unconditional bases, the weak-star convergence of Taylor polynomials, the problem of a solid span and the curious roles played by c 0 . The two features of this work are as follows: (1) during the process, we are led to revisit the axioms satisfied by a typical Banach space of analytic functions over the unit disk, leading to a notion of (and ), as well as a number of related functorial constructions, which are of independent interests; (2) the main interests of solid basis lie in the case of non-separable (p-)Banach spaces, such as BMOA and the Bloch space instead of VMOA and the little Bloch space.

Abstract:We study best approximations in Banach spaces via Birkhoff–James orthogonality of functionals. To exhibit the usefulness of Birkhoff–James orthogonality techniques in the study of best approximation problems, some algorithms and distance formulae are presented. As an application of our study, we obtain some crucial inequalities, which also strengthen the classical Hölder's inequality. The relevance of the algorithms and the inequalities are discussed through concrete examples.

Abstract:This paper discusses a new notion of quadratic variation and covariation for Banach space valued processes (not necessarily semimartingales) and related Itô formula. If $\X$ and $\Y$ take respectively values in Banach spaces $B_{1}$ and $B_{2}$ and $\chi$ is a suitable subspace of the dual of the projective tensor product of $B_{1}$ and $B_{2}$ (denoted by $(B_{1}\hat{\otimes}_{\pi}B_{2})^{\ast}$), we define the so-called $\chi$-covariation of $\X$ and $\Y$. If $\X=\Y$, the $\chi$-covariation is called $\chi$-quadratic variation. The notion of $\chi$-quadratic variation is a natural generalization of the one introduced by Métivier-Pellaumail and Dinculeanu which is too restrictive for many applications. In particular, if $\chi$ is the whole space $(B_{1}\hat{\otimes}_{\pi}B_{1})^{\ast}$ then the $\chi$-quadratic variation coincides with the quadratic variation of a $B_{1}$-valued semimartingale. We evaluate the $\chi$-covariation of various processes for several examples of $\chi$ with a particular attention to the case $B_{1}=B_{2}=C([-\tau,0])$ for some $\tau>0$ and $\X$ and $\Y$ being \textit{window processes}. If $X$ is a real valued process, we call window process associated with $X$ the $C([-\tau,0])$-valued process $\X:=X(\cdot)$ defined by $X_t(y) = X_{t+y}$, where $y \in [-\tau,0]$. The Itô formula introduced here is an important instrument to establish a representation result of Clark-Ocone type for a class of path dependent random variables of type $h=H(X_{T}(\cdot))$, $H:C([-T,0])\longrightarrow\R$ for not-necessarily semimartingales $X$ with finite quadratic variation.
