Abstract:Electric field control of the magnetic state in ferrimagnets holds great promise for developing spintronic devices due to low power consumption. Here, we demonstrate a non-volatile reversal of perpendicular net magnetization in a ferrimagnet by manipulating the electric-field driven polarization within the Pb (Zr0.2Ti0.8) O3 (PZT)/CoGd heterostructure. Electron energy loss spectra and X-ray absorption spectrum directly verify that the oxygen ion migration at the PZT/CoGd interface associated with reversing the polarization causes the enhanced/reduced oxidation in CoGd. Ab initio calculations further substantiate that the migrated oxygen ions can modulate the relative magnetization of Co/Gd sublattices, facilitating perpendicular net magnetization switching. Our findings offer an approach to effectively control ferrimagnetic net magnetization, holding significant implications for ferrimagnetic spintronic applications.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The key problem that this paper attempts to solve is to control the perpendicular magnetization reversal in ferroelectric/ferrimagnetic heterostructures through electric fields. In particular, it has studied how to use the electric - field - driven polarization to achieve the reversible reversal of non - volatile perpendicular net magnetization. Specifically, the research focuses on: 1. **Development of low - power spintronic devices**: By controlling the magnetic state of ferrimagnets through electric fields, it is expected to develop low - power spintronic devices. 2. **Magnetization reversal mechanism in PZT/CoGd heterostructures**: It has studied how the electric - field - driven polarization affects the reversal of perpendicular net magnetization in Pb(Zr₀.₂Ti₀.₈)O₃ (PZT)/CoGd heterostructures. 3. **The role of oxygen - ion migration**: It has explored the influence of oxygen - ion migration at the PZT/CoGd interface on the redox of the CoGd layer, and then modulates the relative magnetization intensities of the Co and Gd sub - lattices to achieve the reversal of perpendicular net magnetization. ### Main findings - **Experimental verification**: Through electron energy - loss spectroscopy (EELS) and X - ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS), it has directly verified that oxygen - ion migration is related to polarization reversal, resulting in a change in the oxidation degree of the CoGd layer. - **Theoretical calculation support**: Based on first - principles calculations, it has further confirmed that oxygen - ion migration can modulate the relative magnetization intensities of the Co and Gd sub - lattices, thereby achieving the reversal of perpendicular net magnetization. ### Conclusion The research results provide an effective method for controlling the net magnetization of ferrimagnets, which has important scientific and technological significance, especially in the development of solid - state magnetic random - access memories and logical spintronic devices. ### Formula summary The formulas involved in this paper are mainly used to describe the calculation of magnetization intensity, for example: \[ M_Z = -\frac{\mu_B}{\hbar}(L_Z + 2S_Z) \] where: - \( M_Z \) is the z - component of the magnetization intensity - \( \mu_B \) is the Bohr magneton - \( \hbar \) is the reduced Planck constant - \( L_Z \) is the z - component of the orbital angular momentum - \( S_Z \) is the z - component of the spin angular momentum Specific calculation formulas for Co and Gd are also given respectively to ensure the accurate calculation of the magnetization intensity.
