Abstract:This paper presents any spherical fibration over certain CW complexes is stably fibre homotopy equivalent to a $\mathrm{TOP}$-linear spherical bundle. Moreover, if the CW complex is a Poincar$\mathrm{\acute{e}}$ complex, then it is of the homotopy type of a topological manifold.

Abstract:Parametrized topological complexity is a homotopy invariant that represents the degree of instability of motion planning problem that involves external constraints. We consider the parametrized topological complexity in the case of spherical fibrations over spheres. We explicitly compute a lower bound in terms of weak category and determine the parametrized topological complexity of some spherical fibrations.

Abstract:Abstract We construct sphere fibrations over ‐connected ‐manifolds such that the total space is a connected sum of sphere products. More precisely, for even, we construct fibrations , where is a ‐connected ‐dimensional Poincaré duality complex that satisfies , in a localised category of spaces. The construction of the fibration is proved for , where the prime 2, and the primes that occur as torsion in are inverted. In specific cases, by either assuming is small, or assuming is large we can reduce the number of primes that need to be inverted. Integral results are obtained for or 4, and if is bigger than the number of cyclic summands in the stable stem , we obtain results after inverting 2. Finally, we prove some applications for fibrations over , and for looped configuration spaces.

Abstract:We construct a Poincaré complex whose periodic total surgery obstruction vanishes but whose Spivak normal fibration does not admit a reduction to a stable euclidean bundle. This contradicts the conjunction of two claims in the literature: Namely, on the one hand that a Poincaré complex with vanishing periodic total surgery obstruction is homotopy equivalent to a homology manifold, which appears in work of Bryant--Ferry--Mio--Weinberger, and on the other that the Spivak normal fibration of a homology manifold always admits a reduction to a stable euclidean bundle, which appears in work of Ferry--Pedersen.

Abstract:To the integral symplectic group Sp(2g,Z) we associate two posets of which we prove that they have the Cohen-Macaulay property. As an application we show that the locus of marked decomposable principally polarized abelian varieties in the Siegel space of genus g has the homotopy type of a bouquet of (g-2)-spheres. This, in turn, implies that the rational homology of moduli space of (unmarked) principal polarized abelian varieties of genus g modulo the decomposable ones vanishes in degree g-2 or lower. Another application is an improved stability range for the homology of the symplectic groups over Euclidean rings. But the original motivation comes from envisaged applications to the homology of groups of Torelli type. The proof of our main result rests on a refined nerve theorem for posets that may have an interest in its own right.

Abstract:Let $Z$ be a compact, connected $3$-dimensional complex manifold with vanishing first and second Betti numbers and non-vanishing Euler characteristic. We prove that there is no holomorphic mapping from $Z$ onto any $2$-dimensional complex space. In other words, $Z$ can only possibly fiber over a curve. This result applies in particular to a class of threefolds, known as Clemens threefolds, which are diffeomorphic to a connected sum $k \# (S^3 \times S^3)$ for $k \geq 2$. This result also gives a new restriction on any hypothetical complex structure on the $6$-sphere $S^6$.

On equivariant fibrations of $G$-CW-complexes

Abstract:It is proved that if $G$ is a compact Lie group, then an equivariant Serre fibration of $G$-CW-complexes is an equivariant Hurewicz fibration in the class of compactly generated $G$-spaces. In the nonequivariant setting, this result is due to Steinberger, West and Cauty. The main theorem is proved using the following key result: a $G$-CW-complex can be embedded as an equivariant retract in a simplicial $G$-complex. It is also proved that an equivariant map $p: E \to B$ of $G$-CW-complexes is a Hurewicz $G$-fibration if and only if the $H$-fixed point map $p^H : E^H \to B^H$ is a Hurewicz fibration for any closed subgroup $H$ of $G$. This gives a solution to the problem of James and Segal in the case of $G$-CW-complexes.

Abstract:We study complexes of stable $\infty$-categories, referred to as categorical complexes. As we demonstrate, examples of such complexes arise in a variety of subjects including representation theory, algebraic geometry, symplectic geometry, and differential topology. One of the key techniques we introduce is a totalization construction for categorical cubes which is particularly well-behaved in the presence of Beck-Chevalley conditions. As a direct application we establish a categorical Koszul duality result which generalizes previously known derived Morita equivalences among higher Auslander algebras and puts them into a conceptual context. We explain how spherical categorical complexes can be interpreted as higher-dimensional perverse schobers, and introduce Calabi-Yau structures on categorical complexes to capture noncommutative orientation data. A variant of homological mirror symmetry for categorical complexes is proposed and verified for $\mathbb{C}\mathrm{P}^2$.

The sphere complex of a locally finite graph

Abstract:For a locally finite graph $\Gamma$, we consider its mapping class group $\text{Map}(\Gamma)$ as defined by Algom-Kfir-Bestvina. For these groups, we prove a generalization of the results of Laudenbach and Brendle-Broaddus-Putman, producing a $3$-manifold $M_{\Gamma}$ whose mapping class group surjects onto $\text{Map}(\Gamma)$ with kernel a compact abelian group of sphere twists so that the corresponding short exact sequence splits. Along the way we obtain an induced faithful action of $\text{Map}(\Gamma)$ on the sphere complex $\mathcal{S}(M_{\Gamma})$ of $M_{\Gamma}$, which is the simplicial complex whose simplices are isotopy classes of finite collections of spheres in $M_{\Gamma}$ which are pairwise disjoint. When $\Gamma$ has finite rank, we further show that the action of $\text{Map}(\Gamma)$ on a certain natural subcomplex has elements with positive translation length, and also consider a candidate for an Outer space of such a graph. As another application, we prove that for many $\Gamma$, $\text{Map}(\Gamma)$ is quasi-isometric to a particular subgraph of $\mathcal{S}(M_{\Gamma})$, following Schaffer-Cohen. We also deduce analogs of the results of Domat-Hoganson-Kwak.

Abstract:We show that if $Y$ is a compact topological manifold and $X$ is a locally flat submanifold, then the complement $Y - X$ is homotopy equivalent to a finite CW complex. This is a direct proof, and does not rely on much of the theory of topological manifolds.

Abstract:A principal torus bundle over a complex manifold with even dimensional fiber and characteristic class of type $(1,1)$ admits a family of regular generalized complex structures (GCS) with the fibers as leaves of the associated symplectic foliation. We show that such a generalized complex structure is equivalent to the product of the complex structure on the base and the symplectic structure on the fiber in a tubular neighborhood of an arbitrary fiber if and only if the bundle is flat. This has consequences for the generalized Dolbeault cohomology of the bundle that includes a Künneth formula. On a more general note, if a principal bundle over a complex manifold with a symplectic structure group admits a GCS with the fibers of the bundle as leaves of the associated symplectic foliation, and the GCS is equivalent to a product GCS in a neighborhood of every fiber, then the bundle is flat and symplectic.

Abstract:We study torus fibrations over the 2-sphere and Hurwitz equivalence of their monodromies. We show that, if two torus fibrations over $S^2$ have the same type of singularities, then their global monodromies are Hurwitz equivalent after performing direct sums with certain torus Lefschetz fibrations. The additional torus Lefschetz fibration is universal when the type of singularities is "simple".

Abstract:We show that hyperbolic four-punctured $S^2-$bundles over $S^1$ are distinguished by the finite quotients of their fundamental groups among all 3-manifold groups. To do this, we upgrade a result of Liu to show that the topological type of a fiber is detected by the profinite completion of the fundamental group of a fibered hyperbolic 3-manifold.

Abstract:Heinz Hopf's famous fibrations of the 2n+1-sphere by great circles, the 4n+3-sphere by great 3-spheres, and the 15-sphere by great 7-spheres have a number of interesting properties. Besides providing the first examples of homotopically nontrivial maps from one sphere to another sphere of lower dimension, they all share two striking features: (1) Their fibers are parallel, in the sense that any two fibers are a constant distance apart, and (2) The fibrations are highly symmetric. For example, there is a fiber-preserving isometry of each total space which takes any given fiber to any other one. Hopf fibrations have been characterized up to isometry by the first property above, initially among all fibrations of spheres by great subspheres, and later in the stronger sense among all fibrations of spheres by smooth subspheres. In this paper, we show that the Hopf fibrations are also characterized by their "fiberwise homogeneity" expressed above in (2), and in the strong sense among all fibrations of spheres by smooth subspheres. In the special case of the 3-sphere fibered by great circles, we prove something stronger. We prove that a fibration of a connected open set by great circles which is locally fiberwise homogeneous is part of a Hopf fibration.

Abstract:We extend the Cohen-Jones-Segal construction of stable homotopy types associated to flow categories of Morse-Smale functions $f$ to the setting where $f$ is equivariant under a finite group action and is Morse but no longer Morse-Smale. This setting occurs universally, as equivariant Morse functions can rarely be perturbed to nearby equivariant Morse-Smale functions. The method is very general, and allows one to do equivariant Floer theory while avoiding all the complications typically caused by issues of equivariant transversality. The construction assigns a (genuine) equivariant orthogonal spectrum to an equivariant framed virtually smooth flow category. Using this method, we construct, for a compact symplectic manifold $M$, which is symplectically atoroidal with contact boundary, and is equipped with an equivariant trivialization of its polarization class, a cyclotomic structure on the spectral lift of the symplectic cohomology $SH^*(M)$. This generalizes a variant of the map which sends loops to their $p$-fold covers on free loop spaces to the setting of general Liouville domains, and suggests a systematic connection between Floer homology and $p$-adic Hodge theory.

Abstract:We show that a homotopy equivalence between manifolds induces a correspondence between their spin^c-structures, even in the presence of 2-torsion. Abstract:Let $X$ denote the `conifold smoothing', the symplectic Weinstein manifold which is the complement of a smooth conic in $T^*S^3$, or equivalently the plumbing of two copies of $T^*S^3$ along a Hopf link. Let $Y$ denote the `conifold resolution', by which we mean the complement of a smooth divisor in $\mathcal{O}(-1) \oplus \mathcal{O}(-1) \to \mathbb{P}^1$. We prove that the compactly supported symplectic mapping class group of $X$ splits off a copy of an infinite rank free group, in particular is infinitely generated; and we classify spherical objects in the bounded derived category $D(Y)$ (the three-dimensional `affine $A_1$-case'). Our results build on work of Chan-Pomerleano-Ueda and Toda, and both theorems make essential use of working on the `other side' of the mirror.

Abstract:We show that the $p$-group complex of a finite group $G$ is homotopy equivalent to a wedge of spheres of dimension at most $n$ if $G$ contains a self-centralising normal subgroup $H$ which is isomorphic to a group of Lie type and Lie rank $n$ in characteristic $p$.
