Abstract:We introduce a very simple solitaire game, named Stanley Solitaire, in honor of Richard Stanley, and prove an explicit closed-form formula for the number of ways of playing it. Alas, the only proof that we know is via a deep theorem of Richard Stanley from 1984. We challenge the readers to find a more elementary proof.

Abstract:Matthew Baker investigated, in previous work, an elegant, infinite-length game that may be used to study subsets of real numbers. We present two accessible examples of how an important technique from set theory, or a different technique from infinite game theory, may be used to answer Baker's question on whether this game provides a precise characterization for countable subsets of real numbers, and we connect this game to the well-studied Banach-Mazur game from topology.

Abstract:The classical constant-sum 'silent duel' game had two antagonistic marksmen walking towards each other. A more friendly formulation has two equally skilled marksmen approaching targets at which they may silently fire at distances of their own choice. The winner, who gets a unit prize, is the marksman who hits his target at the greatest distance; if both miss, they share the prize (each gets a 'consolation prize' of one half). In another formulation, if they both miss they each get zero. More generally we can consider more than two marksmen and an arbitrary consolation prize. This non-constant sum game may be interpreted as a research tournament where the entrant who successfully solves the hardest problem wins the prize. We give the first complete solution to the many-player problem with arbitrary consolation prize: moreover (by taking particular values for the consolation prize), our theorem incorporates various special results in the literature, and our proof is simpler than any of these.

The Stanley Conjecture Revisited

Abstract:In the seminal work of Stanley, several conjectures were made on the structure of Littlewood-Richardson coefficients for the multiplication of Jack symmetric functions. Motivated by recent results of Alexandersson and the present author, we postulate that a certain 'windowing' property holds for all such Jack L-R coefficients. This property provides a vast set of relations between these coefficients and allows for their direct computation in certain novel cases. We demonstrate compatibility between our windowing conjecture and the conjectures of Stanley, with the hope of illuminating the structures within.

Abstract:We consider the one-person game of peg solitaire played on a computer. Two popular board shapes are the 33-hole cross-shaped board, and the 15-hole triangle board---we use them as examples throughout. The basic game begins from a full board with one peg missing and the goal is to finish at a board position with one peg. First, we discuss ways to solve the basic game on a computer. Then we consider the problem of quickly distinguishing board positions where the goal can still be reached ("winning" board positions) from those where it cannot. This enables a computer to alert the player if a jump under consideration leads to a dead end. On the 15-hole triangle board, it is possible to identify all winning board positions (from any single vacancy start) by storing a key set of 437 board positions. For the "central game" on the 33-hole cross-shaped board, we can identify all winning board positions by storing 839,536 board positions. By viewing a successful game as a traversal of a directed graph of winning board positions, we apply a simple algorithm to count the number of ways to traverse this graph, and calculate that the total number of solutions to the central game is 40,861,647,040,079,968. Our analysis can also determine how quickly we can reach a "dead board position", where a one peg finish is no longer possible.

History and Overview

Abstract:A common format for sports contests involves pairwise matches between two teams, with the #1 player of team A matched against the #1 player of team B, the #2 player of team A against the #2 player of team B, and so on. This paper addresses the following question: What if team A wants to game the system? Can it gain an advantage by putting its players in a different order? The first example of this problem in history (to the author's knowledge) was a match of three horse races between the King of Qi and general Tian Ji, in China, in the fourth century B.C. Tian Ji's protege, Sun Bin, advised the general to throw the first race, running his #3 horse against the king's #1, and then to race his #1 horse against the king's #2 and his #2 horse against the king's #3. In this way, Tian Ji won the match, 2-1, and Sun Bin ensured his reputation as a great strategist. The paper introduces a card-game version of this puzzle, called One Round War, and derives the optimal strategy in case each side has N cards (the analogue of N horses). The problem is recast as a linear assignment problem. The optimal solution involves sacrificing the weakest k cards/horses (for some k = k(N)) against the opponent's strongest k in reverse order (weakest vs. strongest), and then playing the remaining N-k cards/horses against the opponent's remaining cards in forward order. An exact formula is derived for k(N), and asymptotically we show that k(N) ~ sqrt (N ln N/2). Note: This paper proves that the strategy described above is optimal for sufficiently large N (e.g., for N greater than 10^7). It has also been verified by computer to be optimal for N less than 60. We conjecture that it is also true for N between 60 and 10^7. The upper bound 10^7 can be greatly improved, but closing the gap completely will probably require computer calculations that are beyond our resources.

Abstract:In his book "Mathematical Mind-Benders", Peter Winkler poses the following open problem, originally due to the first author: "[In the game Peer Pressure,] two players are dealt some number of cards, initially face up, each card carrying a different integer. In each round, the players simultaneously play a card; the higher card is discarded and the lower card passed to the other player. The player who runs out of cards loses. As the number of cards dealt becomes larger, what is the limiting probability that one of the players will have a winning strategy?" We show that the answer to this question is zero, as Winkler suspected. Moreover, assume the cards are dealt so that one player receives r >= 1 cards for every one card of the other. Then if r < phi = (1+sqrt 5)/2, the limiting probability that either player has a winning strategy is still zero, while if r > phi, it is one.

The Winnability of Klondike Solitaire and Many Other Patience Games

Abstract:Our ignorance of the winnability percentage of the solitaire card game `Klondike' has been described as "one of the embarrassments of applied mathematics". Klondike, the game in the Windows Solitaire program, is just one of many single-player card games, generically called 'patience' or 'solitaire' games, for which players have long wanted to know how likely a particular game is to be winnable. A number of different games have been studied empirically in the academic literature and by non-academic enthusiasts. Here we show that a single general purpose Artificial Intelligence program named `Solvitaire' can be used to determine the winnability percentage of 73 variants of 35 different single-player card games with a 95% confidence interval of +/- 0.1% or better. For example, we report the winnability of Klondike as 81.945%+/- 0.084% (in the `thoughtful' variant where the player knows the rank and suit of all cards), a 30-fold reduction in confidence interval over the best previous result. The vast majority of our results are either entirely new or represent significant improvements on previous knowledge.

Abstract:The Solitaire cipher was designed by Bruce Schneier as a plot point in the novel Cryptonomicon by Neal Stephenson. The cipher is intended to fit the archetype of a modern stream cipher whilst being implementable by hand using a standard deck of cards with two jokers. We find a model for repetitions in the keystream in the stream cipher Solitaire that accounts for the large majority of the repetition bias. Other phenomena merit further investigation. We have proposed modifications to the cipher that would reduce the repetition bias, but at the cost of increasing the complexity of the cipher (probably beyond the goal of allowing manual implementation). We have argued that the state update function is unlikely to lead to cycles significantly shorter than those of a random bijection.

Abstract:In how many ways can you place n chocolate pieces all of different sizes in an n by n chocolate box, in such a way that when you go from left to right and from top to bottom, there are no gaps AND the sizes increase along each row and each column? The answer is the well-known OEIS Sequence Number 85. To our amazement, the analogous sequence for a three-dimensional chocolate box was not there. Here we fill this gap, and more importantly, offer some computational and theoretical challenges about enumerating families of Solid Standard Young Tableaux.

Abstract:Von Neumann's Min-Max Theorem guarantees that each player of a zero-sum matrix game has an optimal mixed strategy. This paper gives an elementary proof that each player has a near-optimal mixed strategy that chooses uniformly at random from a multiset of pure strategies of size logarithmic in the number of pure strategies available to the opponent. For exponentially large games, for which even representing an optimal mixed strategy can require exponential space, it follows that there are near-optimal, linear-size strategies. These strategies are easy to play and serve as small witnesses to the approximate value of the game. As a corollary, it follows that every language has small ``hard'' multisets of inputs certifying that small circuits can't decide the language. For example, if SAT does not have polynomial-size circuits, then, for each n and c, there is a set of n^(O(c)) Boolean formulae of size n such that no circuit of size n^c (or algorithm running in time n^c) classifies more than two-thirds of the formulae succesfully.

Abstract:In this paper we study a variant of the solitaire game Lights-Out, where the player's goal is to turn off a grid of lights. This variant is a two-player impartial game where the goal is to make the final valid move. This version is playable on any simple graph where each node is given an assignment of either a 0 (representing a light that is off) or 1 (representing a light that is on). We focus on finding the Nimbers of this game on grid graphs and generalized Petersen graphs. We utilize a recursive algorithm to compute the Nimbers for 2 x n grid graphs and for some generalized Petersen graphs.

Abstract:For any odd integer n≥3 a board (of size n) is a square array of n×n positions with a simple rule of how to move between positions. The goal of the game we introduce is to find a path from the upper left corner of a board to the center of the square. If there exists such a path we say that the board is solvable, and we say that the length of this board is the length of a shortest such path. There are 8n2 different boards. We discuss various properties of these boards and present some questions and conjectures. In particular, we show that for n≫1 roughly 38 of the boards are solvable, and that the expected length of a random solvable board tends to 20996, i.e., very big solvable boards tend to have extremely short solutions.

Abstract:Challenges for physical solitaire puzzle games are typically designed in advance by humans and limited in number. Alternatively, some games incorporate rules for stochastic setup, where the game board is randomly configured before the challenge is solved. These setup rules greatly increase the number of possible challenges, but can often generate unsolvable or uninteresting challenges. To better understand the compromises involved in minimizing undesirable challenges, we examine three games where component design choices can influence the stochastic nature of the resulting challenge generation algorithms. We evaluate the effect of these components and algorithms on challenge solvability and challenge engagement. We find that algorithms which control randomness through entangling components based on subelements of the puzzle mechanics can generate interesting challenges with a high probability of being solvable.
