Abstract:Richard Stanley proved that the centralized/normalized version of the random variable "length of largest up-down subsequence" in a random permutation of length n is asymptotically normal. We go beyond and present a more refined asymptotic formula for the moments.

Abstract:Abstract We give here an almost sure central limit theorem for self-normalized partial sums of a strictly stationary φ-mixing sequences which is in the domain of attraction of the normal law with mean zero and possibly infinite variance. Our result substantially extend a result on the almost sure central limit theorem previously obtained by Huang and Pang (2010).

Abstract:We revisit the question of whether the strong law of large numbers (SLLN) holds uniformly in a rich family of distributions, culminating in a distribution-uniform generalization of the Marcinkiewicz-Zygmund SLLN. These results can be viewed as extensions of Chung's distribution-uniform SLLN to random variables with uniformly integrable $q^\text{th}$ absolute central moments for $0 < q < 2$. Furthermore, we show that uniform integrability of the $q^\text{th}$ moment is both sufficient and necessary for the SLLN to hold uniformly at the Marcinkiewicz-Zygmund rate of $n^{1/q - 1}$. These proofs centrally rely on novel distribution-uniform analogues of some familiar almost sure convergence results including the Khintchine-Kolmogorov convergence theorem, Kolmogorov's three-series theorem, a stochastic generalization of Kronecker's lemma, and the Borel-Cantelli lemmas. We also consider the non-identically distributed case.

Abstract:We prove a central limit theorem for the length of the longest subsequence of a random permutation which follows one of a class of repeating patterns. This class includes every fixed pattern of ups and downs having at least one of each, such as the alternating case considered by Stanley in <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="math/0511419" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/math/0511419">arXiv:math/0511419</a> and Widom in <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="math/0511533" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/math/0511533">arXiv:math/0511533</a>. In every case considered the convergence in the limit of long permutations is to normal with mean and variance linear in the length of the permutation.

Abstract:The central limit theorem of martingales is the fundamental tool for studying the convergence of stochastic processes, especially stochastic integrals and differential equations. In this paper, the central limit theorem and the functional central limit theorem are obtained for martingale-like random variables under the sub-linear expectation. As applications, the Lindeberg’s central limit theorem is obtained for independent but not necessarily identically distributed random variables, and a new proof of the Lévy characterization of a GBrownian motion without using stochastic calculus is given. For proving the results, Rosenthal’s inequality and the exponential inequality for the martingale-like random variables are established.

Abstract:In this paper, by establishing a Borel–Cantelli lemma for a capacity which is not necessarily continuous, and a link between a sequence of independent random variables under the sub-linear expectation and a sequence of independent random variables on ℝ∞ under a probability, we give the sufficient and necessary conditions of the strong law of large numbers for independent and identically distributed random variables under the sub-linear expectation, and the sufficient and necessary conditions for the convergence of an infinite series of independent random variables, without the assumption on the continuity of the capacities. A purely probabilistic proof of a weak law of large numbers is also given.

Suppose that the generating function \[f(x, z) = \sum_{n = 0}^\infty \varphi_{Y_n}(x) z^n,\] where $\varphi_{Y_n}$ is the characteristic function of $Y_n$, extends to a function on a neighborhood of $\{0\} \times \{z : |z| \leq 1\} \subset \mathbb{R}^d \times \mathbb{C}$ which is meromorphic in $z$ and has no zeroes. We prove that if $1 / f(x, z)$ is twice differentiable, then there exists a constant $\mu$ such that the distribution of $(Y_n - \mu n) / \sqrt{n}$ converges weakly to a normal distribution as $n \to \infty$. If $Y_n = X_1 + \cdots + X_n$, where $(X_n)_n$ are i.i.d. random variables, then we recover the classical (Lindeberg$\unicode{x2013}$Lévy) central limit theorem. We also prove the 2020 conjecture of Defant that if $\pi_n \in \mathfrak{S}_n$ is a uniformly random permutation, then the distribution of $(\operatorname{des} (s(\pi_n)) + 1 - (3 - e) n) / \sqrt{n}$ converges, as $n \to \infty$, to a normal distribution with variance $2 + 2e - e^2$.

Abstract:By well known results of probability theory, any sequence of random variables with bounded second moments has a subsequence satisfying the central limit theorem and the law of the iterated logarithm in a randomized form. In this paper we give criteria for a sequence $(X_n)$ of random variables to have a subsequence $(X_{n_k})$ whose weighted partial sums, suitably normalized, converge weakly to a stable distribution with parameter $0<\alpha<2$.

Abstract:We prove the Lindeberg--Feller central limit theorem without using characteristic functions or Taylor expansions, but instead by measuring how far a distribution is from the standard normal distribution according to the $2$-Wasserstein metric. This falls under the category of renormalization group methods. The facts we need about the metric are explained and proved in detail. We illustrate the idea on a classical version of the central limit theorem before going into the main proof.

Abstract:We study the distribution of the length of longest increasing subsequences in random permutations of n integers as n grows large and establish an asymptotic expansion in powers of . Whilst the limit law was already shown by Baik, Deift and Johansson to be the GUE Tracy–Widom distribution F, we find explicit analytic expressions of the first few finite-size correction terms as linear combinations of higher order derivatives of F with rational polynomial coefficients. Our proof replaces Johansson's de-Poissonization, which is based on monotonicity as a Tauberian condition, by analytic de-Poissonization of Jacquet and Szpankowski, which is based on growth conditions in the complex plane; it is subject to a tameness hypothesis concerning complex zeros of the analytically continued Poissonized length distribution. In a preparatory step an expansion of the hard-to-soft edge transition law of LUE is studied, which is lifted to an expansion of the Poissonized length distribution for large intensities. Finally, expansions of Stirling-type approximations and of the expected value and variance of the length distribution are given.

Abstract:In $1946$, Mark Kac proved a Central Limit type theorem for a sequence of random variables that were not independent. The random variables under consideration were obtained from the angle-doubling map. The idea behind Kac's proof was to show that although the random variables under consideration were not independent, they were what he calls \textit{statistically independent} (in modern terminology, this concept is called long range independence). The final conclusion of his paper was that the sample averages of the random variables, suitably normalized converges to the standard normal distribution. We describe a new proof of Mark Kac's result by applying Stein's method and show that the normalized sample averages converge to the standard normal distribution in the Wasserstein metric, which is stronger than the convergence in distribution.

Abstract:Lower and upper bounds are explored for the uniform (Kolmogorov) and $L^2$-distances between the distributions of weighted sums of dependent summands and the normal law. The results are illustrated for several classes of random variables whose joint distributions are supported on Euclidean spheres. We also survey several results on improved rates of normal approximation in randomized central limit theorems.

Abstract:We prove asymptotic normality of the distributions defined by q-supernomials, which implies asymptotic normality of the distributions given by the central string functions and the basic specialization of fusion modules of the current algebra of sl2. The limit is taken over linearly scaled fusion powers of a fixed collection of irreducible representations. This includes as special instances all Demazure modules of the affine Kac-Moody algebra associated to sl2. Along with an available complementary result on the asymptotic normality of the basic specialization of graded tensors of the type A standard representation, our result is a central limit theorem for a serious class of graded tensors. It therefore serves as an indication towards universal behavior: The central string functions and the basic specialization of fusion and, in particular, Demazure modules behave asymptotically normal, as the number of fusions scale linearly in an asymptotic parameter, N say.

Abstract:It has been observed that in many practical situations randomly stopped products of random variables have power law distributions. In this note we show that, in order for such a product to have a power law distribution, the only random indices are the exponentially distributed ones. We also consider a more general problem, which is closely related to problems concerning transformation from the central limit theorem to heavy-tailed distributions.

Abstract:Montgomery and Soundararajan showed that the distribution of $\psi(x+H) - \psi(x)$, for $0 \le x \le N$, is approximately normal with mean $ \sim H$ and variance $\sim H \log (N/H)$, when $N^{\delta} \le H \le N^{1-\delta}$. Their work depends on showing that sums $R_k(h)$ of $k$-term singular series are $\mu_k(-h \log h + Ah)^{k/2} + O_k(h^{k/2-1/(7k) + \varepsilon})$, where $A$ is a constant and $\mu_k$ are the Gaussian moment constants. We study lower-order terms in the size of these moments. We conjecture that when $k$ is odd, $R_k(h) \asymp h^{(k-1)/2}(\log h)^{(k+1)/2}$. We prove an upper bound with the correct power of $h$ when $k = 3$, and prove analogous upper bounds in the function field setting when $k =3$ and $k = 5$. We provide further evidence for this conjecture in the form of numerical computations.
