Abstract:We show that the family of smoothly non-isotopic Legendrian pretzel knots from the work of Cornwell-Ng-Sivek that all have the same Legendrian invariants as the standard unknot have front-spuns that are Legendrian isotopic to the front-spun of the unknot. Besides that, we construct the first examples of Lagrangian concordances between Legendrian knots that are not regular, and hence not decomposable. Finally, we show that the relation of Lagrangian concordance between Legendrian knots is not anti-symmetric, and hence does not define a partial order. The latter two results are based upon a new type of flexibility for Lagrangian concordances with stabilised Legendrian ends.

Abstract:This paper gives infinitely many examples of unknot diagrams that are hard, in the sense that the diagrams need to be made more complicated by Reidemeister moves before they can be simplified. In order to construct these diagrams, we prove theorems characterizing when the numerator of the sum of two rational tangles is an unknot. The key theorem shows that the numerator of the sum of two rational tangles [P/Q] and [R/S] is unknotted if and only if PS + QR has absolute value equal to 1. The paper uses these results in studying processive DNA recombination, finding minimal size unknot diagrams, generalizing to collapses to knots as well as to unknots, and in finding unknots with arbirarily high complexity. The paper is self-contained, with a review of the theory of rational tangles and a last section on relationships of the theme of the paper with other aspects of topology and number theory. The present version of the paper contains a correction to Figure 22 of the previous (and published) version, a small expansion to the section on Farey fractions, and an updated reference to the paper "Unknotting unknots" by Henrich and Kauffman.

Unlinking and unknottedness of monotone Lagrangian submanifolds

Abstract:Under certain topological assumptions, we show that two monotone Lagrangian submanifolds embedded in the standard symplectic vector space with the same monotonicity constant cannot link one another and that, individually, their smooth knot type is determined entirely by the homotopy theoretic data which classifies the underlying Lagrangian immersion. The topological assumptions are satisfied by a large class of manifolds which are realised as monotone Lagrangians, including tori. After some additional homotopy theoretic calculations, we deduce that all monotone Lagrangian tori in the symplectic vector space of odd complex dimension at least five are smoothly isotopic.

Abstract:Both classical and virtual knots arise as formal Gauss diagrams modulo some abstract moves corresponding to Reidemeister moves. If we forget about both over/under crossings structure and writhe numbers of knots modulo the same Reidemeister moves, we get a dramatic simplification of virtual knots, which kills all classical knots. However, many virtual knots survive after this simplification. We construct invariants of these objects and present their applications to minimality problems of virtual knots as well as some questions related to graph-links. One can easily generalize these results for the orientable case and apply them for solving non-invertibility problems. The main idea behind these invariants is some geometrical construction which reduces the general equivalence to the equivalence only modulo Reidemeister - 2 move.

On knots in overtwisted contact structures

Abstract:We prove that each overtwisted contact structure has knot types that are represented by infinitely many distinct transverse knots all with the same self-linking number. In some cases, we can even classify all such knots. We also show similar results for Legendrian knots and prove a "folk" result concerning loose transverse and Legendrian knots (that is knots with overtwisted complements) which says that such knots are determined by their classical invariants (up to contactomorphism). Finally we discuss how these results partially fill in our understanding of the "geography" and "botany"' problems for Legendrian knots in overtwisted contact structures, as well as many open questions regarding these problems.

Knot Categorification from Mirror Symmetry, Part II: Lagrangians

Abstract:I provide two solutions to the problem of categorifying quantum link invariants, which work uniformly for all gauge groups and originate in geometry and string theory. The first is based on a category of equivariant B-type branes on ${\cal X}$ which is a moduli space of singular $G$-monopoles on ${\mathbb R}^3$. In this paper, I give the second approach, which is based on a category of equivariant A-type branes on $Y$ with potential $W$. The first and the second approaches are related by equivariant homological mirror symmetry: $Y$ is homological mirror to $X$, a core locus of ${\cal X}$ preserved by an equivariant action related to $\mathfrak{q}$. The theory of equivariant A-branes on $Y$ is the same as the derived category of modules of an algebra $A$, which is a cousin of the algebra considered by Khovanov, Lauda, Rouquier and Webster, but simpler. The result is a new, geometric formulation of Khovanov homology, which generalizes to all groups. In part III, I will explain the string theory origin of the two approaches, and the relation to an approach being developed by Witten. The three parts may be read independently.

On knot types of clean Lagrangian intersections in $T^*\mathbb{R}^3$

Abstract:Let $K_0$ and $K$ be knots in $\mathbb{R}^3$. Suppose that by a compactly supported Hamiltonian isotopy on $T^*\mathbb{R}^3$, the conormal bundle of $K_0$ is isotopic to a Lagrangian submanifold which intersects the zero section cleanly along $K$. In this paper, we prove some constraints on the pair of knot types of $K_0$ and $K$. One example is that if $K_0$ is the unknot, then $K$ is also the unknot. We also consider some cases where $K_0$ and $K$ have specific knot types, such as torus knots and connected sums of trefoil knots. The key step is finding a DGA map between the Chekanov-Eliashberg DGAs of the unit conormal bundles of knots. The main results are deduced from a relation between the augmentation varieties of $K_0$ and $K$ determined by these DGAs.

Torus knots, the A-polynomial, and SL(2,C)

Abstract:The A-polynomial of a knot is defined in terms of SL(2,C) representations of the knot group, and encodes information about essential surfaces in the knot complement. In 2005, Dunfield-Garoufalidis and Boyer-Zhang proved that it detects the unknot using Kronheimer-Mrowka's work on the Property P conjecture. Here we use more recent results from instanton Floer homology to prove that a version of the A-polynomial distinguishes torus knots from all other knots, and in particular detects the torus knot T_{a,b} if and only if one of |a| or |b| is $2$ or both are prime powers. These results enable progress towards a folklore conjecture about boundary slopes of non-torus knots. Finally, we use similar ideas to prove that a knot in the 3-sphere admits infinitely many SL(2,C)-abelian Dehn surgeries if and only if it is a torus knot, affirming a variant of a conjecture due to Sivek-Zentner.

Abstract:We investigate an equivalence relation on Legendrian knots in the standard contact three-space defined by the existence of an interpolating zigzag of Lagrangian cobordisms. We compare this relation, restricted to genus-$0$ surfaces, to smooth concordance and Lagrangian concordance. We then study the metric monoid formed by the set of Lagrangian zigzag concordance classes, which parallels the metric group formed by the set of smooth concordance classes, proving structural results on torsion and satellite operators. Finally, we discuss the relation of Lagrangian zigzag cobordism to non-classical invariants of Legendrian knots.

Abstract:We introduce an invariant of a hyperbolic knot which is a map $\alpha\mapsto \boldsymbol{\Phi}_\alpha(h)$ from $\mathbb{Q}/\mathbb{Z}$ to matrices with entries in $\overline{\mathbb{Q}}[[h]]$ and with rows and columns indexed by the boundary parabolic ${\rm SL}_2(\mathbb{C})$ representations of the fundamental group of the knot. These matrix invariants have a rich structure: (a) their $(\sigma_0,\sigma_1)$ entry, where $\sigma_0$ is the trivial and $\sigma_1$ the geometric representation, is the power series expansion of the Kashaev invariant of the knot around the root of unity ${\rm e}^{2\pi{\rm i} \alpha}$ as an element of the Habiro ring, and the remaining entries belong to generalized Habiro rings of number fields; (b) the first column is given by the perturbative power series of Dimofte-Garoufalidis; (c) the columns of $\boldsymbol{\Phi}$ are fundamental solutions of a linear $q$-difference equation; (d) the matrix defines an ${\rm SL}_2(\mathbb{Z})$-cocycle $W_\gamma$ in matrix-valued functions on $\mathbb{Q}$ that conjecturally extends to a smooth function on $\mathbb{R}$ and even to holomorphic functions on suitable complex cut planes, lifting the factorially divergent series $\boldsymbol{\Phi}(h)$ to actual functions. The two invariants $\boldsymbol{\Phi}$ and $W_\gamma$ are related by a refined quantum modularity conjecture which we illustrate in detail for the three simplest hyperbolic knots, the $4_1$, $5_2$ and $(-2,3,7)$ pretzel knots. This paper has two sequels, one giving a different realization of our invariant as a matrix of convergent $q$-series with integer coefficients and the other studying its Habiro-like arithmetic properties in more depth.

On the neighborhood of knots

Abstract:This manuscript introduces a new framework for the study of knots by exploring the neighborhood of knot embeddings in the space of simple open and closed curves in 3-space. The latter gives rise to a knotoid spectrum, which determines the knot type via its knot-type knotoids. We prove that the pure knotoids in the knotoid spectra of a knot, which are individually agnostic of the knot type, can distinguish knots of Gordian distance greater than one. We also prove that the neighborhood of some embeddings of the unknot can be distinguished from any embedding of any non-trivial knot that satisfies the cosmetic crossing conjecture. Topological invariants of knots can be extended to their open curve neighborhood to define continuous functions in the neighborhood of knots. We discuss their properties and prove that invariants in the neighborhood of knots may be able to distinguish more knots than their application to the knots themselves. For example, we prove that an invariant of knots that fails to distinguish mutant knots (and mutant knotoids), can distinguish them by their neighborhoods, unless it also fails to distinguish non-mutant pure knotoids in their spectra. Studying the neighborhood of knots opens the possibility of answering questions, such as if an invariant can detect the unknot, via examining possibly easier questions, such as whether it can distinguish height one knotoids from the trivial knotoid.

Abstract:Given a knot K in S^3, let u^-(K) (respectively, u^+(K)) denote the minimum number of negative (respectively, positive) crossing changes among all unknotting sequences for K. We use knot Floer homology to construct the invariants l^-(K), l^+(K) and l(K), which give lower bounds on u^-(K), u^+(K) and the unknotting number u(K), respectively. The invariant l(K) only vanishes for the unknot, and is greater than or equal to the \nu^-(K). Moreover, the difference l(K)-\nu^-(K) can be arbitrarily large. We also present several applications towards bounding the unknotting number, the alteration number and the Gordian distance.

Lagrangian Cobordisms between Enriched Knot Diagrams

Abstract:In this paper, we present new obstructions to the existence of Lagrangian cobordisms in $\mathbb{R}^4$ that depend only on the enriched knot diagrams of the boundary knots or links, using holomorphic curve techniques. We define enriched knot diagrams for generic smooth links. The existence of Lagrangian cobordisms gives a well-defined transitive relation on equivalence classes of enriched knot diagrams that is a strict partial order when restricted to exact enriched knot diagrams To establish obstructions we study $1$-dimensional moduli spaces of holomorphic disks with corners that have boundary on Lagrangian tangles - an appropriate immersed Lagrangian closely related to embedded Lagrangian cobordisms. We adapt existing techniques to prove compactness and transversality, and compute dimensions of these moduli spaces. We produce obstructions as a consequence of characterizing all boundary points of such moduli spaces. We use these obstructions to recover and extend results about ``growing" and ``shrinking" Lagrangian slices. We hope that this investigation will open up new directions in studying Lagrangian surfaces in $\mathbb{R}^4$.

Abstract:Classical knot theory deals with {\em diagrams} and {\em invariants}. By means of horizontal {\em trisecants}, we construct a new theory of classical braids with invariants valued in {\em pictures}. These pictures are closely related to diagrams of the initial object. The main tool is the notion of {\em free $k$-braid group}. In the simplest case, for free $2$-braids, the word problem and the conjugacy problem can be solved by finding the minimal representative, which can be thought of as a graph, and is unique, as such. We prove a general theorem about invariants of dynamical systems which are valued in such groups and hence, in pictures. We describe various applications of the above theory: invariants of weavings (collections of skew lines in $\R^{3}$), and many other objects in geometry and topology. In general, provided that for some topological objects (considered up to isotopy, homotopy etc) some easy axioms (coming from some dimensional constraints) hold, one can construct similar dynamical systems and picture-valued invariants.

Abstract:Knots and knotted fields enrich physical phenomena ranging from DNA and molecular chemistry to the vortices of fluid flows and textures of ordered media. Liquid crystals provide an ideal setting for exploring such topological phenomena through control of their characteristic defects. The use of colloids in generating defects and knotted configurations in liquid crystals has been demonstrated for spherical and toroidal particles and shows promise for the development of novel photonic devices. Extending this existing work, we describe the full topological implications of colloids representing non-orientable surfaces and use it to construct torus knots and links of type ($p$,2) around multiply-twisted Möbius strips.
