Abstract:Under certain topological assumptions, we show that two monotone Lagrangian submanifolds embedded in the standard symplectic vector space with the same monotonicity constant cannot link one another and that, individually, their smooth knot type is determined entirely by the homotopy theoretic data which classifies the underlying Lagrangian immersion. The topological assumptions are satisfied by a large class of manifolds which are realised as monotone Lagrangians, including tori. After some additional homotopy theoretic calculations, we deduce that all monotone Lagrangian tori in the symplectic vector space of odd complex dimension at least five are smoothly isotopic.

As a consequence, the authors obtain a family of new flat Lagrangian submanifolds from a given one via a purely algebraic algorithm. Abstract:In this paper, we present new obstructions to the existence of Lagrangian cobordisms in $\mathbb{R}^4$ that depend only on the enriched knot diagrams of the boundary knots or links, using holomorphic curve techniques. We define enriched knot diagrams for generic smooth links. The existence of Lagrangian cobordisms gives a well-defined transitive relation on equivalence classes of enriched knot diagrams that is a strict partial order when restricted to exact enriched knot diagrams To establish obstructions we study $1$-dimensional moduli spaces of holomorphic disks with corners that have boundary on Lagrangian tangles - an appropriate immersed Lagrangian closely related to embedded Lagrangian cobordisms. We adapt existing techniques to prove compactness and transversality, and compute dimensions of these moduli spaces. We produce obstructions as a consequence of characterizing all boundary points of such moduli spaces. We use these obstructions to recover and extend results about ``growing" and ``shrinking" Lagrangian slices. We hope that this investigation will open up new directions in studying Lagrangian surfaces in $\mathbb{R}^4$.

Abstract:In $1961$, Mazur constructed a contractible, compact, smooth $4$-manifold with boundary which is not homeomorphic to the standard $4$-ball, using a $0$-handle, a $1$-handle and a $2$-handle. In this paper, for any integer $n\geq2,$ we construct a contractible, compact, smooth $(n+3)$-manifold with boundary which is not homeomorphic to the standard $(n+3)$-ball, using a $0$-handle, an $n$-handle and an $(n+1)$-handle. The key step is the construction of an interesting knotted $n$-sphere in $S^n\times S^2$ generalizing the Mazur pattern.

Abstract:We prove that for any compact orientable connected 3-manifold with torus boundary, a concatenation of it and the direct product of the circle and the Klein bottle with an open 2-disk removed admits a Lagrangian embedding into the standard symplectic 6-space. Moreover, minimal Maslov number of the Lagrangian embedding is equal to 1.

Abstract:In this paper we show how to lift Lagrangian immersions in $\mathbb{C} P^{n-1}$ to produce Lagrangian cones in $\mathbb{C} ^n$, and use this process to produce several families of examples of Lagrangian cones and special Lagrangian cones. Moreover we show how to produce Lagrangian cones, isotopic to the Harvey-Lawson and trivial cones, whose projections to $\mathbb{C} P^{n-1}$ are immersions with few transverse double points.

Abstract:We show that the family of smoothly non-isotopic Legendrian pretzel knots from the work of Cornwell-Ng-Sivek that all have the same Legendrian invariants as the standard unknot have front-spuns that are Legendrian isotopic to the front-spun of the unknot. Besides that, we construct the first examples of Lagrangian concordances between Legendrian knots that are not regular, and hence not decomposable. Finally, we show that the relation of Lagrangian concordance between Legendrian knots is not anti-symmetric, and hence does not define a partial order. The latter two results are based upon a new type of flexibility for Lagrangian concordances with stabilised Legendrian ends.

Abstract:The $n$-skeleton of the canonical cubulation $\cal C$ of $\mathbb{R}^{n+2}$ into unit cubes is called the {\it canonical scaffolding} ${\cal{S}}$. In this paper, we prove that any smooth, compact, closed, $n$-dimensional submanifold of $\mathbb{R}^{n+2}$ with trivial normal bundle can be continuously isotoped by an ambient isotopy to a cubic submanifold contained in ${\cal{S}}$. In particular, any smooth knot $\mathbb{S}^{n}\hookrightarrow\mathbb{R}^{n+2}$ can be continuously isotoped to a knot contained in ${\cal{S}}$.

Abstract:For a smooth manifold $N$ denote by $E^m(N)$ the set of smooth isotopy classes of smooth embeddings $N\to\mathbb R^m$. A description of the set $E^m(S^p\times S^q)$ was known only for $p=q=0$ or for $p=0$, $m\ne q+2$ or for $2m\ge 2(p+q)+\max\{p,q\}+4$. (The description was given in terms of homotopy groups of spheres and of Stiefel manifolds.) For $m\ge2p+q+3$ we introduce an abelian group structure on $E^m(S^p\times S^q)$ and describe this group `up to an extension problem'. This result has corollaries which, under stronger dimension restrictions, more explicitly describe $E^m(S^p\times S^q)$. The proof is based on relations between sets $E^m(N)$ for different $N$ and $m$, in particular, on a recent exact sequence of M. Skopenkov.

Knot Categorification from Mirror Symmetry, Part II: Lagrangians

Abstract:I provide two solutions to the problem of categorifying quantum link invariants, which work uniformly for all gauge groups and originate in geometry and string theory. The first is based on a category of equivariant B-type branes on ${\cal X}$ which is a moduli space of singular $G$-monopoles on ${\mathbb R}^3$. In this paper, I give the second approach, which is based on a category of equivariant A-type branes on $Y$ with potential $W$. The first and the second approaches are related by equivariant homological mirror symmetry: $Y$ is homological mirror to $X$, a core locus of ${\cal X}$ preserved by an equivariant action related to $\mathfrak{q}$. The theory of equivariant A-branes on $Y$ is the same as the derived category of modules of an algebra $A$, which is a cousin of the algebra considered by Khovanov, Lauda, Rouquier and Webster, but simpler. The result is a new, geometric formulation of Khovanov homology, which generalizes to all groups. In part III, I will explain the string theory origin of the two approaches, and the relation to an approach being developed by Witten. The three parts may be read independently.

Abstract:We construct a Lagrangian submanifold, inside the cotangent bundle of a real torus, which we call a Lagrangian pair of pants. It is given as the graph of the differential of a smooth function defined on the real blow up of a Lagrangian coamoeba. Lagrangian pairs of pants are the main building blocks in a construction of smooth Lagrangian submanifolds of $(\mathbb{C}^*)^n$ which lift tropical subvarieties in $\mathbb{R}^n$. As an example we explain how to lift tropical curves in $\mathbb{R}^2$ to Lagrangian submanifolds of $(\mathbb{C}^*)^2$. We also give several new examples of Lagrangian submanifolds inside toric varieties, some of which are monotone.

Note that any closed exact Lagrangian in the symplectisation is displaceable by a Hamiltonian isotopy. On knot types of clean Lagrangian intersections in $T^*\mathbb{R}^3$

Abstract:Let $K_0$ and $K$ be knots in $\mathbb{R}^3$. Suppose that by a compactly supported Hamiltonian isotopy on $T^*\mathbb{R}^3$, the conormal bundle of $K_0$ is isotopic to a Lagrangian submanifold which intersects the zero section cleanly along $K$. In this paper, we prove some constraints on the pair of knot types of $K_0$ and $K$. One example is that if $K_0$ is the unknot, then $K$ is also the unknot. We also consider some cases where $K_0$ and $K$ have specific knot types, such as torus knots and connected sums of trefoil knots. The key step is finding a DGA map between the Chekanov-Eliashberg DGAs of the unit conormal bundles of knots. The main results are deduced from a relation between the augmentation varieties of $K_0$ and $K$ determined by these DGAs.

Abstract:The construction of knots via annular twisting has been used to create families of knots yielding the same manifold via Dehn surgery. Prior examples have all involved Dehn surgery where the surgery slope is an integral multiple of 2. In this note we prove that for any integer $n$ there exist infinitely many different knots in $S^3$ such that $n$-surgery on those knots yields the same manifold. In particular, when $|n|=1$ homology spheres arise from these surgeries. In addition, when $n \neq 0$ the bridge numbers of the knots constructed tend to infinity as the number of twists along the annulus increases.

Is every knot isotopic to the unknot?

Abstract:In 1974, D. Rolfsen asked: Is every knot in $S^3$ isotopic (=homotopic through embeddings) to a PL knot or, equivalently, to the unknot? In particular, is the Bing sling isotopic to a PL knot? We show that the Bing sling is not isotopic to any PL knot: (1) by an isotopy which extends to an isotopy of $2$-component links with $lk=1$; (2) through knots that are intersections of nested sequences of solid tori. There are also stronger versions of these results. In (1), the additional component may be allowed to self-intersect, and even to get replaced by a new one as long as it represents the same conjugacy class in $G/[G',G'']$, where $G$ is the fundamental group of the complement to the original component. In (2), the "solid tori" can be replaced by "boundary-link-like handlebodies", where a handlebody $V\subset S^3$ of genus $g$ is called boundary-link-like if $\pi_1(\overline{S^3-V})$ admits a homomorphism to the free group $F_g$ such that the composition $\pi_1(\partial V)\to\pi_1(\overline{S^3-V})\to F_g$ is surjective.

Abstract:We study lagrangian submanifolds of algebraic variety Gr(1, n) equipped with the Kahler form given by the Plucker embedding. We use the correspondence between lagrangian submanifolds of Gr(1, n) and lagrangian submanifolds of variety M_{n-k}, given by symplectic reduction Gr(1, n)//T^k for some specially chosen moment maps, which generate T^k action on Gr(1, n). We establish that in this way one finds many topological types, realized by lagrangian submanifolds, and then one counts that Gr(1, n) admits more than n different topological types of smooth lagrangian submanifolds.

On the Legendrian realisation of parametric families of knots

Abstract:We study the natural inclusion of the space of Legendrian embeddings in $(\mathbb{S}^3,\xi_{\operatorname{std}})$ into the space of smooth embeddings from a homotopical viewpoint. T. Kálmán posed in [Kal] the open question of whether for every fixed knot type $\mathcal{K}$ and Legendrian representative $\mathcal{L}$, the homomorphism $\pi_1(\mathcal{L})\to\pi_1(\mathcal{K})$ is surjective. We positively answer this question for infinitely many knot types $\mathcal{K}$ in the three main families (hyperbolic, torus and satellites) and every stabilised Legendrian representative in $(\mathbb{S}^3,\xi_{\operatorname{std}})$. We then show that for every $n\geq 3$, the homomorphisms $\pi_n(\mathcal{L})\to\pi_n(\mathcal{K})$ and $\pi_n(\mathcal{FL})\to\pi_n(\mathcal{K})$ are never surjective for any knot type $\mathcal K$, Legendrian representative $\mathcal L$ or formal Legendrian representative $\mathcal{FL}$. This shows the existence of rigidity at every higher-homotopy level beyond $\pi_3$. For completeness, we also show that surjectivity at the $\pi_2$-level depends on the smooth knot type.
