Abstract:These notes are based on the lectures given by the author during Winter Braids IX in Reims in March 2019. We discuss slice knots and why they are interesting, as well as some ways to decide if a given knot is or is not slice. We describe various methods for drawing diagrams of double branched covers of knots in the 3-sphere and surfaces in the 4-ball, and how these can be useful to decide if an alternating knot is slice. We include a description of the computer search for slice alternating knots due to the author and Frank Swenton.

Abstract:Abstract We make use of the 3D nature of knots and links to find savings in computational complexity when computing knot invariants such as the linking number and, in general, most finite type invariants. These savings are achieved in comparison with the 2D approach to knots using knot diagrams.

Abstract:We determine the locally flat cobordism distance between torus knots with small and large braid index, up to high precision. Here small means 2, 3, 4, or 6. As an application, we derive a surprising fact about torus knots that are met along the way of almost minimal cobordisms between two-stranded torus knots and the trivial knot.

Abstract:A knot $\kappa$ in $S^3$ is persistently foliar if, for each non-trivial boundary slope, there is a co-oriented taut foliation meeting the boundary of the knot complement transversely in a foliation by curves of that slope. For rational slopes, these foliations may be capped off by disks to obtain a co-oriented taut foliation in every manifold obtained by non-trivial Dehn surgery on that knot. We show that any composite knot with a persistently foliar summand is persistently foliar and that any nontrivial connected sum of fibered knots is persistently foliar. As an application, it follows that any composite knot in which each of two summands is fibered or at least one summand is nontorus alternating or Montesinos is persistently foliar. We note that, in constructing foliations in the complements of fibered summands, we build branched surfaces whose complementary regions agree with those of Gabai's product disk decompositions, except for the one containing the boundary of the knot complement. It is this boundary region which provides for persistence.

Taut foliations from knot diagrams

Abstract:We prove that if a knot $K$ has a particular type of diagram then all non-trivial surgeries on $K$ contain a coorientable taut foliation. Knots admitting such diagrams include many two-bridge knots, many pretzel knots, many Montesinos knots and more generally all arborescent knots defined by weighted planar trees with more than one vertex such that $1)$ all weights have absolute value greater than one, and $2)$ there exists a weight with absolute value greater than two. The ideas involved in the proof can also be adapted to study surgeries on links and as an application we show that for all surgeries $M$ on the Borromean link it holds that $M$ is not an $L$-space if and only if $M$ contains a coorientable taut foliation.

Taut foliations, braid positivity, and unknot detection

Abstract:We study positive braid knots (the knots in the three-sphere realized as positive braid closures) through the lens of the L-space conjecture. This conjecture predicts that if $K$ is a non-trivial positive braid knot, then for all $r < 2g(K)-1$, the 3-manifold obtained via $r$-framed Dehn surgery along $K$ admits a taut foliation. Our main result provides some positive evidence towards this conjecture: we construct taut foliations in such manifolds whenever $r<g(K)+1$. As an application, we produce a novel braid positivity obstruction for cable knots by proving that the $(n,\pm 1)$-cable of a knot $K$ is braid positive if and only if $K$ is the unknot. We also present some curious examples demonstrating the limitations of our construction; these examples can also be viewed as providing some negative evidence towards the L-space conjecture. Finally, we apply our main result to produce taut foliations in some splicings of knot exteriors.

Abstract:Both classical and virtual knots arise as formal Gauss diagrams modulo some abstract moves corresponding to Reidemeister moves. If we forget about both over/under crossings structure and writhe numbers of knots modulo the same Reidemeister moves, we get a dramatic simplification of virtual knots, which kills all classical knots. However, many virtual knots survive after this simplification. We construct invariants of these objects and present their applications to minimality problems of virtual knots as well as some questions related to graph-links. One can easily generalize these results for the orientable case and apply them for solving non-invertibility problems. The main idea behind these invariants is some geometrical construction which reduces the general equivalence to the equivalence only modulo Reidemeister - 2 move.

Abstract:A knotted surface in may be described by means of a hyperbolic diagram that captures the 0-section of a special Morse function, called a hyperbolic decomposition. We show that every hyperbolic decomposition of a knotted surface defines a projection of onto a 2-sphere , whose set of critical values is the hyperbolic diagram of . We apply such projections, called flattenings, to define three invariants of knotted surfaces: the layering, the trunk, and the partition number. The basic properties of flattenings and their derived invariants are obtained. Our construction is used to study flattenings of satellite 2-knots.

Classification of small links in the unmarked solid torus

Abstract:We introduce a framework to analyze knots and links in an unmarked solid torus. We discuss invariants that detect when such links are equivalent under an ambient homeomorphism, and show that the multivariable Alexander polynomial is such in invariant. We compute, for links with low wrapping number, bounds on the degree of a Dehn twist needed to transform one into the other that depend on the dichromatic Kauffman polynomial. Finally, we use this to give a classification of all non-split links up to 6 crossings in the unmarked solid torus.

Abstract:We prove that all knots can be embedded into the Menger Sponge fractal. We prove that all Pretzel knots can be embedded into the Sierpinski Tetrahedron. Then we compare the number of iterations of each of these fractals needed to produce a given knot as a mean to compare the complexity of the two fractals.

Abstract:Journal of Knot Theory and Its Ramifications, Volume 33, Issue 01, January 2024. We study the structure of the augmented fundamental quandle of a knot whose complement contains an incompressible torus. We obtain the relationship between the fundamental quandle of a satellite knot and the fundamental quandles/groups of its companion and pattern knots. General presentations of the fundamental quandles of a link in a solid torus, a link in a lens space and a satellite knot are described. In the last part of this paper, an algebraic approach to the study of affine quandles is presented and some known results about the Alexander module and quandle colorings are obtained.

FlatKnotInfo: the first 1.24 million flat knots

Abstract:We use matchings on Lyndon words to classify flat knots up to 8 crossings. Using flat knots invariants such as the based matrix, the $\phi$-invariant, the flat arrow polynomial, and the flat Jones-Krushkal polynomial, we distinguish all flat knots up to 7 crossings except for five pairs. Among the many flat knots considered, we find examples that are: (i) algebraically slice but not slice; (ii) almost classical (null-homologous) but not slice; (iii) nontrivial but with trivial (primitive) based matrix. The classification data has been curated and is available on FlatKnotInfo, which is an interactive searchable website listing flat knots up to 8 crossings and their invariants. It also provides access to algebraic and diagrammatic information on these knots and is designed to enable users to discover patterns and formulate conjectures on their own.

Abstract:In 2010, Turaev introduced knotoids as a variation on knots that replaces the embedding of a circle with the embedding of a closed interval with two endpoints which here we call poles. We define generalised knotoids to allow arbitrarily many poles, intervals and circles, each pole corresponding to any number of interval endpoints, including zero. This theory subsumes a variety of other related topological objects and introduces some particularly interesting new cases. We explore various analogs of knotoid invariants, including height, index polynomials, bracket polynomials and hyperbolicity. We further generalise to knotoidal graphs, which are a natural extension of spatial graphs that allow both poles and vertices.

Unknotting number 21 knots are slice in K3

Abstract:We prove that all knots with unknotting number at most 21 are smoothly slice in the K3 surface. We also prove a more general statement for 4-manifolds that contain a plumbing tree of spheres. Our strategy is based on a flexible method to remove double points of immersed surfaces in 4-manifolds by tubing over neighbourhoods of embedded trees. As a byproduct, we recover a classical result of Norman and Suzuki that every knot is smoothly slice in $S^2 \times S^2$ and in $\mathbb{CP}^2 \# \overline{\mathbb{CP}^2}$.

Generating Infinitely Many Hyperbolic Knots with Plats

Abstract:In this paper we study the relationships between links in plat position, the dynamics of the braid group, and Heegaard splittings of double branched covers of $S^3$ over a link. These relationships offer new ways to view links in plat position and a new tool kit for analyzing links. In particular, we show that the Hempel distance of the Heegaard splitting of the double branched cover obtained from a plat is a lower bound for the Hempel distance of that plat. Using the Hempel distance of a knot in bridge position and pseudo-Anosov braids we obtain our main result: a construction of infinitely many sequences of prime hyperbolic $n$-bridge knots for $n \geq 3$, infinitely many of which are distinct. We consider known results to show that the knot genus and hyperbolic volume of these knots are bounded below by a linear function. As a further result we show that the plat closure of a 6-braid is generically hyperbolic.

Abstract:In this paper we provide a combinatorial tool to help study some topological properties of modular knots. We construct templates for the infinitely many Anosov flows on the trefoil complement, which are lifts of the geodesic flow on the modular surface, by lifting Ghys' modular template using self-covering of the trefoil complement of order $6k+1$, for $k\in \mathbb{N}_{>0}$. This allows to study the knot properties of closed geodesics in these flows, and an explicit construction of an infinite family of links of two components with one of them being the trefoil, all commensurable to one another.

Abstract:Heegaard Floer homology and knot Floer homology are powerful invariants of 3-manifolds and links respectively. L-space knots are knots which admit Dehn surgeries to 3-manifolds with Heegaard Floer homology of minimal rank. In this paper we study almost L-space knots, which are knots admitting large Dehn surgeries to 3-manifolds with Heegaard Floer homology of next-to-minimal rank. Our main result is a classification of the $CFK^\infty$ type of almost L-space knots. As corollaries we show that almost L-space knots satisfy various topological properties, including some given by Baldwin-Sivek. We also give some new cable link detection results.
