Abstract:We prove that all knots can be embedded into the Menger Sponge fractal. We prove that all Pretzel knots can be embedded into the Sierpinski Tetrahedron. Then we compare the number of iterations of each of these fractals needed to produce a given knot as a mean to compare the complexity of the two fractals.

Abstract:This paper gives infinitely many examples of unknot diagrams that are hard, in the sense that the diagrams need to be made more complicated by Reidemeister moves before they can be simplified. In order to construct these diagrams, we prove theorems characterizing when the numerator of the sum of two rational tangles is an unknot. The key theorem shows that the numerator of the sum of two rational tangles [P/Q] and [R/S] is unknotted if and only if PS + QR has absolute value equal to 1. The paper uses these results in studying processive DNA recombination, finding minimal size unknot diagrams, generalizing to collapses to knots as well as to unknots, and in finding unknots with arbirarily high complexity. The paper is self-contained, with a review of the theory of rational tangles and a last section on relationships of the theme of the paper with other aspects of topology and number theory. The present version of the paper contains a correction to Figure 22 of the previous (and published) version, a small expansion to the section on Farey fractions, and an updated reference to the paper "Unknotting unknots" by Henrich and Kauffman.

Tile Numbers of Knot Corner Mosaics

Abstract:A knot mosaic is a grid of pictorial tiles representing a tame knot or link. Recently, two groups independently introduced a new set of tiles. We call mosaics made with these new tiles corner mosaics. The (corner) tile number is the minimum number of tiles needed to represent a knot or link as a (corner) mosaic. We show that the corner tile number plus a positive term is less than or equal to the tile number. This positive term is $\geq 4$ for all knots and links with no unlinked, unknotted components. We also show that the only knots and links with corner tile number $<11$ and no unlinked, unknotted components are the Hopf link, the trefoil knot, Solomon's knot, the connect sum of two Hopf links, the cinquefoil knot, and the star of David link.

Abstract:In 2008, Kauffman and Lomonaco introduce the concepts of a knot mosaic and the mosaic number of a knot or link, the smallest integer $n$ such that a knot or link can be represented on an $n$-mosaic. In <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1702.06462" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1702.06462">arXiv:1702.06462</a>, the authors explore space-efficient knot mosaics and the tile number of a knot or link, the smallest number of non-blank tiles necessary to depict the knot or link on a mosaic. They determine bounds for the tile number in terms of the mosaic number. In this paper, we focus specifically on prime knots with mosaic number 6. We determine a complete list of these knots, provide a minimal, space-efficient knot mosaic for each of them, and determine the tile number (or minimal mosaic tile number) of each of them.

Abstract:The presence of slipknots in configurations of proteins and DNA has been shown to affect their functionality, or alter it entirely. Historically, polymers are modeled as polygonal chains in space. As an alternative to space curves, we provide a framework for working with subknots inside of knot diagrams via knotoid diagrams. We prove using a pattern theorem for knot diagrams that not only are almost all knot diagrams slipknotted, almost all unknot diagrams are slipknotted. This proves in the random diagram model a conjecture yet unproven in random space curve models. We also discuss conjectures on the enumeration of knotoid diagrams.
Knot Mosaics with Corner Connection Tiles

Abstract:A knot mosaic is a representation of a knot or link on a square grid using a collection of tiles that are either blank or contain a portion of the knot diagram. Traditionally, a piece of the knot on one tile connects to a piece of the knot on an adjacent tile at a connection point that is located at the midpoint of a tile edge. We introduce a new set of tiles in which the connection points are located at corners of the tile. By doing this, we can create more efficient knot mosaics for knots with small crossing number. In particular, when using these corner connection tiles, it is possible to create knot mosaic diagrams for all knots with crossing number 8 or less on a mosaic that is no larger and uses fewer non-blank tiles than is possible using the traditional tiles.

Abstract:Knot mosaic theory was introduced by Lomonaco and Kauffman in the paper on `Quantum knots and mosaics' to give a precise and workable definition of quantum knots, intended to represent an actual physical quantum system. A knot (m,n)-mosaic is an $m \! \times \! n$ matrix whose entries are eleven mosaic tiles, representing a knot or a link by adjoining properly. In this paper we introduce two variants of knot mosaics: period knot mosaics and toroidal knot mosaics, which are common features in physics and mathematics. We present an algorithm producing the exact enumeration of period knot (m,n)-mosaics for any positive integers m and n, toroidal knot (m,n)-mosaics for co-prime integers m and n, and furthermore toroidal knot (p,p)-mosaics for a prime number p. We also analyze the asymptotics of the growth rates of their cardinality.

Abstract:We prove that all knots with unknotting number at most 21 are smoothly slice in the K3 surface. We also prove a more general statement for 4-manifolds that contain a plumbing tree of spheres. Our strategy is based on a flexible method to remove double points of immersed surfaces in 4-manifolds by tubing over neighbourhoods of embedded trees. As a byproduct, we recover a classical result of Norman and Suzuki that every knot is smoothly slice in $S^2 \times S^2$ and in $\mathbb{CP}^2 \# \overline{\mathbb{CP}^2}$.

Abstract:We study the twisting fault emerging in circular knitting and its relation to the mathematical concepts of framing curves and the Gauss linking integral. We create three knitted bands with framing zero, one, and negative two, and use three different techniques to compute the framing using the Gauss linking integral. We also briefly mention the connection to in Chern-Simons gauge theory.

Abstract:A knotted surface in may be described by means of a hyperbolic diagram that captures the 0-section of a special Morse function, called a hyperbolic decomposition. We show that every hyperbolic decomposition of a knotted surface defines a projection of onto a 2-sphere , whose set of critical values is the hyperbolic diagram of . We apply such projections, called flattenings, to define three invariants of knotted surfaces: the layering, the trunk, and the partition number. The basic properties of flattenings and their derived invariants are obtained. Our construction is used to study flattenings of satellite 2-knots.

Abstract:These notes are based on the lectures given by the author during Winter Braids IX in Reims in March 2019. We discuss slice knots and why they are interesting, as well as some ways to decide if a given knot is or is not slice. We describe various methods for drawing diagrams of double branched covers of knots in the 3-sphere and surfaces in the 4-ball, and how these can be useful to decide if an alternating knot is slice. We include a description of the computer search for slice alternating knots due to the author and Frank Swenton.

Abstract:We consider the question of how many essential Seifert Klein bottles with common boundary slope a knot in S^3 can bound, up to ambient isotopy. We prove that any hyperbolic knot in S^3 bounds at most six Seifert Klein bottles with a given boundary slope. The Seifert Klein bottles in a minimal projection of hyperbolic pretzel knots of length 3 are shown to be unique and pi_1-injective, with surgery along their boundary slope producing irreducible toroidal manifolds. The cable knots which bound essential Seifert Klein bottles are classified; their Seifert Klein bottles are shown to be non-pi_1-injective, and unique in the case of torus knots. For satellite knots we show that, in general, there is no upper bound for the number of distinct Seifert Klein bottles a knot can bound.

Abstract:Using the Hatcher-Oertel algorithm for finding boundary slopes of Montesinos knots, we prove the Slope Conjecture and the Strong Slope Conjecture for a family of 3-tangle pretzel knots. More precisely, we prove that the maximal degrees of the colored Jones polynomial of such knots determine a boundary slope as predicted by the Slope Conjecture, and that the linear term in the degrees correspond to the Euler characteristic of an essential surface.

Abstract:Starting with a smooth $n$-dimensional knot $K\subset\bS^{n+2}$, and a beaded $n$-dimensional necklace subordinated to $K$, we construct a wild knot with a Cantor set of wild points (\ie the knot is not locally flat in these points). The construction uses the conformal Schottky group acting on $\bS^{n+2}$, generated by inversions on the spheres which are the boundary of the``beads''. We show that if $K$ is a fibered knot then the wild knot is also fibered. We also study cyclic branched coverings along the wild knots.

Abstract:We show that every nonzero integer occurs as the denominator of a boundary slope for infinitely many (1,1)-knots and that infinitely many (1,1)-knots have boundary slopes of arbitrarily small difference. Specifically, we prove that for any integers m,n>1$$m,n>1$$ with n odd the exterior of the Montesinos knot K(-1/2,m/(2m±1),1/n)$$K(-1/2, m/(2m\pm 1),1/n)$$ in S3$$S^3$$ contains an essential surface with boundary slope r=2(n-1)2/n$$r = 2(n-1)^2/n$$ if m is even and 2(n+1)2/n$$2(n+1)^2/n$$ if m is odd. If n≥4m+1$$n \ge 4m + 1$$, we prove that K(-1/2,m/(2m+1),1/n)$$K(-1/2, m/(2m+1),1/n)$$ also has a boundary slope whose difference with r is (8m-2)/(n2-4mn+n)$$(8m-2)/(n^2-4mn+n)$$, which decreases to 0 as n increases. All of these knots are (1,1)-knots.
Knotted optical fields: Seifert fibrations, braided open books and topological constraints

Abstract:This paper presents a novel framework for studying knotted and braided configurations of optical fields, moving beyond the conventional Hopfion solution based on the Hopf fibration. By employing the Seifert fibration, a preferred framing is introduced to characterize the ``knottiness" of tubular neighbourhoods of knots embedded in the 3-sphere. This approach yields a specific presentation of Seifert surfaces and facilitates the description of knotted optical fields, drawing on an enriched version of Rañada's formulation. The relation between knots and braids enables one to explore the connections between configurations generated experimentally through the controlled over- and under-crossings of light beams, and concepts from geometric group theory and algebraic topology. This framework, emphasizing the significance of ``braided open books", sheds light on topological constraints inherent in classes of braids suitable for representing interlaced optical fields. These constraints primarily pertain to braids with $n\leq3$ strands -- aligning with existing experimental implementations -- and homogeneous braids with any number of strands. This paper establishes a theoretical foundation for understanding and manipulating knotted optical fields, suggesting potential applications and avenues for further research in this domain.

Abstract:Conjecture $\mathbb{Z}$ is a knot theoretical equivalent form of the Kervaire Conjecture. We say that a knot have property $\mathbb{Z}$ if it satisfies Conjecture $\mathbb{Z}$ for that specific knot. In this work, we show that alternating Montesinos knots with three tangles have property $\mathbb{Z}$. We also show that all the pretzel knots of the form $P(p,q,r)$ (not necessarily alternating) have property $\mathbb{Z}$.

Abstract:The concept of a knot mosaic was introduced by Lomonaco and Kauffman as a means to construct a quantum knot system. The mosaic number of a given knot K is defined as the minimum integer n that allows the representation of K on an n×n mosaic board. Building upon this, the first author and Nelson extended the knot mosaic system to encompass surface-links through the utilization of marked graph diagrams and established both lower and upper bounds for the mosaic number of the surface-links presented in Yoshikawa's table. In this paper, we establish a mosaic system for immersed surface-links by using singular marked graph diagrams. We also provide the definition and discussion on the mosaic number for immersed surface-links.

Abstract:Let K be a hyperbolic (-2,3,n) pretzel knot and M = S^3 K its complement. For these knots, we verify a conjecture of Reid and Walsh: there are at most three knot complements in the commensurability class of M. Indeed, if n \neq 7, we show that M is the unique knot complement in its class. We include examples to illustrate how our methods apply to a broad class of Montesinos knots.

Abstract:Knots and knotted fields enrich physical phenomena ranging from DNA and molecular chemistry to the vortices of fluid flows and textures of ordered media. Liquid crystals provide an ideal setting for exploring such topological phenomena through control of their characteristic defects. The use of colloids in generating defects and knotted configurations in liquid crystals has been demonstrated for spherical and toroidal particles and shows promise for the development of novel photonic devices. Extending this existing work, we describe the full topological implications of colloids representing non-orientable surfaces and use it to construct torus knots and links of type ($p$,2) around multiply-twisted Möbius strips.
