Abstract:In this paper, we prove that for any flow $\Psi$ obtained by a Dehn-Fried surgery on an expansive (or equivalently topological pseudo-Anosov) flow $\Phi$ in dimension 3, $\Psi$ is expansive if and only if its stable and unstable foliations do not contain $1$-prong singularities.

Geometric Markov partitions for pseudo-Anosov homeomorphisms with prescribed combinatorics

Abstract:In this paper, we focus on constructing and refining geometric Markov partitions for pseudo-Anosov homeomorphisms that may contain spines. We introduce a systematic approach to constructing \emph{adapted Markov partitions} for these homeomorphisms. Our primary result is an algorithmic construction of \emph{adapted Markov partitions} for every generalized pseudo-Anosov map, starting from a single point. This algorithm is applied to the so-called \emph{first intersection points} of the homeomorphism, producing \emph{primitive Markov partitions} that behave well under iterations. We also prove that the set of \emph{primitive geometric types} of a given order is finite, providing a canonical tool for classifying pseudo-Anosov homeomorphisms. We then construct new geometric Markov partitions from existing ones, maintaining control over their combinatorial properties and preserving their geometric types. The first geometric Markov partition we construct has a binary incidence matrix, which allows for the introduction of the sub-shift of finite type associated with any Markov partition's incidence matrix -- this is known as the \emph{binary refinement}. We also describe a process that cuts any Markov partition along stable and unstable segments prescribed by a finite set of periodic codes, referred to as the $s$ and $U$-boundary refinements. Finally, we present an algorithmic construction of a Markov partition where all periodic boundary points are located at the corners of the rectangles in the partition, called the \emph{corner refinement}. Each of these Markov partitions and their intrinsic combinatorial properties plays a crucial role in our algorithmic classification of pseudo-Anosov homeomorphisms up to topological conjugacy.

Capacity bounds on integral flows and the Kostant partition function

Abstract:The type $A$ Kostant partition function is an important combinatorial object with various applications: it counts integer flows on the complete directed graph, computes Hilbert series of spaces of diagonal harmonics, and can be used to compute weight and tensor product multiplicities of representations. In this paper we study asymptotics of the Kostant partition function, improving on various previously known lower bounds and settling conjectures of O'Neill and Yip. Our methods build upon recent results and techniques of Brändén-Leake-Pak, who used Lorentzian polynomials and Gurvits' capacity method to bound the number of lattice points of transportation and flow polytopes. Finally, we also give new two-sided bounds using the Lidskii formulas from subdivisions of flow polytopes.

Abstract:Let , where is a connected Lie group and is a lattice in . Let be an open subset of , and let be a one-parameter subsemigroup of . Consider the set of points in whose -orbit misses ; it has measure zero if the flow is ergodic. It has been conjectured that, assuming ergodicity, this set has Hausdorff dimension strictly smaller than the dimension of . This conjecture has been proved when is compact or when is a simple Lie group of real rank , or, most recently, for certain flows on the space of lattices. In this paper we prove this conjecture for arbitrary -diagonalizable flows on irreducible quotients of semisimple Lie groups. The proof uses exponential mixing of the flow together with the method of integral inequalities for height functions on . We also derive an application to jointly Dirichlet-Improvable systems of linear forms.

A Countable Partition for Singular Flows, and Its Application on the Entropy Theory

Abstract:In this paper, we construct a countable partition $${\cal A}$$ for flows with hyperbolic singularities by introducing a new cross section at each singularity. Such partition forms a Kakutani tower in a neighborhood of the singularity, and turns out to have finite metric entropy for every invariant probability measure. Moreover, each element of $${{\cal A}^\infty}$$ will stay in a scaled tubular neighborhood for arbitrarily long time. This new construction enables us to study entropy theory for singular flows away from homoclinic tangencies, and show that the entropy function is upper semi-continuous with respect to both invariant measures and the flows, provided that the limiting measure satisfies μ(Sing(X)) = 0.

Abstract:We discuss some examples of smooth transitive flows with physical measures supported at fixed points. We give some conditions under which stopping a flow at a point will create a Dirac physical measure at that indifferent fixed point. Using the Anosov-Katok method, we construct transitive flows on surfaces with the only ergodic invariant probabilities being Dirac measures at hyperbolic fixed points. When there is only one such point, the corresponding Dirac measure is necessarily the only physical measure with full basin of attraction. Using an example due to Hu and Young, we also construct a transitive flow on a three-dimensional compact manifold without boundary, with the only physical measure the average of two Dirac measures at two hyperbolic fixed points.
Splitting for some classes of homeomorphic and coalescing stochastic flows

Abstract:The splitting scheme (the Kato-Trotter formula) is applied to stochastic flows with common noise of the type introduced by Th.E.~Harris. The case of possibly coalescing flows with continuous infinitesimal covariance is considered and the weak convergence of the corresponding finite-dimensional motions is established. As applications, results for the convergence of the associated pushforward measures and dual flows are given. Similarities between splitting and the Euler-Maruyama scheme yield estimates of the speed of the convergence under additional regularity assumptions.

Abstract:This paper introduces assignment flows for density matrices as state spaces for representing and analyzing data associated with vertices of an underlying weighted graph. Determining an assignment flow by geometric integration of the defining dynamical system causes an interaction of the non-commuting states across the graph, and the assignment of a pure (rank-one) state to each vertex after convergence. Adopting the Riemannian Bogoliubov-Kubo-Mori metric from information geometry leads to closed-form local expressions which can be computed efficiently and implemented in a fine-grained parallel manner. Restriction to the submanifold of commuting density matrices recovers the assignment flows for categorial probability distributions, which merely assign labels from a finite set to each data point. As shown for these flows in our prior work, the novel class of quantum state assignment flows can also be characterized as Riemannian gradient flows with respect to a non-local non-convex potential, after proper reparametrization and under mild conditions on the underlying weight function. This weight function generates the parameters of the layers of a neural network, corresponding to and generated by each step of the geometric integration scheme. Numerical results indicates and illustrate the potential of the novel approach for data representation and analysis, including the representation of correlations of data across the graph by entanglement and tensorization.

Abstract:The notion of the flow introduced by Kitaev is a manifestly topological formulation of the winding number on a real lattice. First, we show in this paper that the flow is quite useful for practical numerical computations for systems without translational invariance. Second, we extend it to three dimensions. Namely, we derive a formula of the flow on a three-dimensional lattice, which corresponds to the conventional winding number when systems have translational invariance.

Abstract:Let $(M,g)$ be a compact manifold without conjugate points and with visibility universal covering. We show that its geodesic flow has a time-preserving expansive factor which is topologically mixing and has a local product structure. As an application, assuming further the so-called entropy-gap we prove the uniqueness of the measure of maximal entropy for the geodesic flow. For the other results we restrict our setting assuming furthermore the continuity of Green bundles and the existence of a hyperbolic closed geodesic. In this new context, we deduce that Green bundles are uniquely integrable and are tangent to the smooth leaves of the horospherical foliations. Moreover, we prove the above expansive factor acts on a compact topological manifold and its geodesic flow has a unique measure of maximal entropy which has full support.

Abstract:We consider the topological dynamics of the automorphism group of a particular sparse graph M_1 resulting from an ab initio Hrushovski construction. We show that minimal subflows of the flow of linear orders on M_1 have all orbits meagre, partially answering a question of Tsankov regarding results of Evans, Hubicka and Nesetril on the topological dynamics of automorphism groups of sparse graphs.

Abstract:In this paper we show that a geodesic flow of a compact surface without conjugate points of genus greater than one is time-preserving semi-conjugate to a continuous expansive flow which is topologically mixing and has a local product structure. As an application we show that the geodesic flow of a compact surface without conjugate points of genus greater than one has a unique measure of maximal entropy. This gives an alternative proof of Climenhaga–Knieper–War Theorem.

Volume inequalities for flow polytopes of full directed acyclic graphs

Abstract:Given a finite directed acyclic graph, the space of non-negative unit flows is a lattice polytope called the flow polytope of the graph. We consider the volumes of flow polytopes for directed acyclic graphs on $n+1$ vertices with a fixed degree sequence, with a focus on graphs having in- and out-degree two on every internal vertex. When the out-degree of the source is three and the number of vertices is fixed, we prove that there is an interchange operation on the edge set of these graphs that induces a partial order on the graphs isomorphic to a Boolean algebra. Further, we prove that as we move up through this partial order, the volumes of the corresponding flow polytopes weakly decrease. Finally, we show that each such graph is strongly planar and we provide an alternative interpretation of our results in the context of linear extensions for posets that are bipartite non-crossing trees.

Abstract:Abstract Let denote the number of ‐dimensional partitions with entries from . Building upon the works of Balogh–Treglown–Wagner and Noel–Scott–Sudakov, we show that when , holds for all . This makes progress toward a conjecture of Moshkovitz–Shapira [ Adv. in Math . 262 (2014), 1107–1129]. Via the main result of Moshkovitz and Shapira, our estimate also determines asymptotically a Ramsey‐theoretic parameter related to Erdős–Szekeres‐type functions, thus solving a problem of Fox, Pach, Sudakov, and Suk [ Proc. Lond. Math. Soc . 105 (2012), 953–982]. Our main result is a new supersaturation theorem for antichains in , which may be of independent interest.

Expansions of the Potts model partition function along deletions and contractions

Abstract:We establish two expansions of the Potts model partition function of a graph. One is along the deletions of a graph, a rewritten formula given in Biggs (1977). The other is along the contractions of a graph. Then, we specialize the partition function to the chromatic or flow polynomial by the Möbius inversion formula, and prove two known equations of the two polynomials. One expresses the chromatic polynomial as a weighted sum of flow polynomials of deletions, the other expresses the flow polynomial as a weighted sum of chromatic polynomials of contractions. The proof of the former by Biggs formula is due to Bychkov et al. (2021). The two expressions are considered to be dual in the sense of their forms, and transfer to each other with plane duality. This relation also holds in our expansions of the Potts model partition function. We clarify this duality by using matroid duality. Partition functions can be extended to matroids, and the two expansions can also be extended. The two expansions transfer to each other with matroid duality, so in addition to an elementary combinatorial proof of the two, we give another proof by the "duality" relation between them.

Existence of arbitrary large numbers of non-$\mathbb R$-covered Anosov flows on hyperbolic $3$-manifolds

Abstract:The purpose of this paper is to prove that, for every $n\in \mathbb N$, there exists a closed hyperbolic $3$-manifold $M$ which carries at least $n$ non-$\mathbb R$-covered Anosov flows, that are pairwise non-orbitally equivalent. Due to a recent result by Fenley, such Anosov flows are quasi-geodesic. Hence, we get the existence of hyperbolic $3$-manifolds carrying many pairwise non-orbitally equivalent quasi-geodesic Anosov flows. Based on the orbit space theory of Anosov flows developed by Fenley and Barbot, we completely studied the connected components of edge-adjacent lozenges, say, clusters in the orbit spaces of the Anosov flows in construction. The number of the lozenges of a cluster and a type of orientations on the clusters together are used as dynamical invariants to prove that the flows we construct are not orbitally equivalent. We believe that those dynamical invariants could be used in a much wider context.
