Abstract:Let X be a smooth subvariety of CP^N. We study a flow, called balancing flow, on the space of projectively equivalent embeddings of X, which attempts to deform the given embedding into a balanced one. If L->X is an ample line bundle, considering embeddings via H^0(L^k) gives a sequence of balancing flows. We prove that, provided these flows are started at appropriate points, they converge to Calabi flow for as long as it exists. This result is the parabolic analogue of Donaldson's theorem relating balanced embeddings to metrics with constant scalar curvature [JDG 59(3):479-522, 2001]. In our proof we combine Donaldson's techniques with an asymptotic result of Liu-Ma [arXiv:math/0601260v2] which, as we explain, describes the asymptotic behaviour of the derivative of the map FS\circ Hilb whose fixed points are balanced metrics.

Abstract:We define a new family of discrete representations of relatively hyperbolic groups which unifies many existing definitions and examples of geometrically finite behavior in higher rank. The definition includes the relative Anosov representations defined by Kapovich-Leeb and Zhu, and Zhu-Zimmer, as well as holonomy representations of various different types of "geometrically finite" convex projective manifolds. We prove that these representations are all stable under deformations whose restriction to the peripheral subgroups satisfies a dynamical condition, in particular allowing for deformations which do not preserve the conjugacy class of the peripheral subgroups.

A uniqueness theorem for transitive Anosov flows obtained by gluing hyperbolic plugs

Abstract:In a previous paper with C. Bonatti ([5]), we have defined a general procedure to build new examples of Anosov flows in dimension 3. The procedure consists in gluing together some building blocks, called hyperbolic plugs, along their boundary in order to obtain a closed 3-manifold endowed with a complete flow. The main theorem of [5] states that (under some mild hypotheses) it is possible to choose the gluing maps so the resulting flow is Anosov. The aim of the present paper is to show a uniqueness result for Anosov flows obtained by such a procedure. Roughly speaking, we show that the orbital equivalence class of these Anosov flows is insensitive to the precise choice of the gluing maps used in the construction. The proof relies on a coding procedure which we find interesting for its own sake, and follows a strategy that was introduced by T. Barbot in a particular case.

Pseudo-Anosov representatives of stable Hamiltonian structures

Abstract:A pseudo-Anosov homeomorphism of a surface is a canonical representative of its mapping class. In this paper, we explain that a transitive pseudo-Anosov flow is similarly a canonical representative of its stable Hamiltonian class. It follows that there are finitely many pseudo-Anosov flows admitting positive Birkhoff sections on any given rational homology 3-sphere. This result has a purely topological consequence: any 3-manifold can be obtained in at most finitely many ways as $p/q$ surgery on a fibered hyperbolic knot in $S^3$ for a slope $p/q$ satisfying $q\geq 6$, $p\neq 0, \pm 1, \pm 2 \mod q$. The proof of the main theorem generalizes an argument of Barthelmé--Bowden--Mann.

Locally homogeneous Axiom A flows I: projective Anosov subgroups and exponential mixing

Abstract:By constructing a non-empty domain of discontinuity in a suitable homogeneous space, we prove that every torsion-free projective Anosov subgroup is the monodromy group of a locally homogeneous contact Axiom A dynamical system with a unique basic hyperbolic set on which the flow is conjugate to the refraction flow of Sambarino. Under the assumption of irreducibility, we utilize the work of Stoyanov to establish spectral estimates for the associated complex Ruelle transfer operators, and by way of corollary: exponential mixing, exponentially decaying error term in the prime orbit theorem, and a spectral gap for the Ruelle zeta function. With no irreducibility assumption, results of Dyatlov-Guillarmou imply the global meromorphic continuation of zeta functions with smooth weights, as well as the existence of a discrete spectrum of Ruelle-Pollicott resonances and (co)-resonant states. We apply our results to space-like geodesic flows for the convex cocompact pseudo-Riemannian manifolds of Danciger-Guéritaud-Kassel, and the Benoist-Hilbert geodesic flow for strictly convex real projective manifolds.

Non-transitive pseudo-Anosov flows

Abstract:We study (topological) pseudo-Anosov flows from the perspective of the associated group actions on their orbit spaces and boundary at infinity. We extend the definition of Anosov-like action from [BFM22] from the transitive to the general non-transitive context and show that one can recover the basic sets of a flow, the Smale order on basic sets, and their essential features, from such general group actions. Using these tools, we prove that a pseudo-Anosov flow in a $3$ manifold is entirely determined by the associated action of the fundamental group on the boundary at infinity of its orbit space. We also give a proof that any topological pseudo-Anosov flow on an atoroidal 3-manifold is necessarily transitive, and prove that density of periodic orbits implies transitivity, in the topological rather than smooth case.

Anosov flows in dimension 3: an outside look

Abstract:These notes were intended as support material for a minicourse on Anosov flows in the conference "Symplectic geometry and Anosov flows'' which took place in Heidelberg in July 2024 organized by Peter Albers, Jonathan Bowden and Agustín Moreno. I took the invitation to present the subject as asking from an outsider view of the subject, given the fact that my research uses both ideas and results from the theory of Anosov flows. The point of view of the course is to provide an overview of the main results and questions in the subject, with emphasis on the interaction with topology, geometry, specially symplectic geometry and contact aspects of the theory. Some detail is given in the presentation of the Barbot-Fenley theory of leaf spaces. Hopefully the notes will contribute in gaining a working knowledge of the theory and its many beautiful connections.

Reconstruction of Anosov flows from infinity

Abstract:Every pseudo-Anosov flow $\phi$ in a closed $3$-manifold $M$ gives rise to an action of $\pi_1(M)$ on a circle $S^{1}_{\infty}(\phi)$ from infinity \cite{Fen12}, with a pair of invariant \emph{almost} laminations. From certain actions on $S^{1}$ with invariant almost laminations, we reconstruct flows and manifolds realizing these actions, including all orientable transitive pseudo-Anosov flows in closed $3$-manifolds. Our construction provides a geometry model for such flows and manifolds induced from $\mathcal{D} \times \mathcal{D}$, where $\mathcal{D}$ is the Poincaré disk with $\partial \mathcal{D}$ identified with $S^{1}_{\infty}(\phi)$. In addition, our result applies to Cannon conjecture under the assumption that certain group-equivariant sphere-filling Peano curve exists, which offers a description of orientable quasigeodesic pseudo-Anosov flows in hyperbolic $3$-manifolds in terms of group actions on $\partial \mathbb{H}^{3} \times \partial \mathbb{H}^{3} \times \partial \mathbb{H}^{3}$.

Anosov representations acting on homogeneous spaces: domains of discontinuity

Abstract:We construct open domains of discontinuity for Anosov representations acting on some homogeneous spaces, including (pseudo-Riemannian) symmetric spaces. This generalizes work of Kapovich-Leeb-Porti on flag spaces. Our results complement those of Guéritaud-Guichard-Kassel-Wienhard, who constructed proper actions of Anosov representations. For Zariski dense Anosov representations with respect to a minimal parabolic subgroup acting on some symmetric spaces, we show that our construction describes the largest possible open domains of discontinuity.

Abstract:We prove that in dimension 3, Anosov flows which are $\mathbb{R}$-covered and skewed are orbit equivalent to Reeb-Anosov flows. We characterize the existence of an invariant contact form or of a Birkhoff section with a given boundary, in terms of linking numbers between two invariant signed measures. Furthermore, we prove the existence of open book decompositions with one boundary component for Reeb-Anosov flows.

Existence of arbitrary large numbers of non-$\mathbb R$-covered Anosov flows on hyperbolic $3$-manifolds

Abstract:The purpose of this paper is to prove that, for every $n\in \mathbb N$, there exists a closed hyperbolic $3$-manifold $M$ which carries at least $n$ non-$\mathbb R$-covered Anosov flows, that are pairwise non-orbitally equivalent. Due to a recent result by Fenley, such Anosov flows are quasi-geodesic. Hence, we get the existence of hyperbolic $3$-manifolds carrying many pairwise non-orbitally equivalent quasi-geodesic Anosov flows. Based on the orbit space theory of Anosov flows developed by Fenley and Barbot, we completely studied the connected components of edge-adjacent lozenges, say, clusters in the orbit spaces of the Anosov flows in construction. The number of the lozenges of a cluster and a type of orientations on the clusters together are used as dynamical invariants to prove that the flows we construct are not orbitally equivalent. We believe that those dynamical invariants could be used in a much wider context.

Examples of Anosov flows with genus one Birkhoff sections

Abstract:We show that a transitive Anosov flow with orientable stable and unstable foliations that either (i) admits a Birkhoff section whose first return map is a Penner type pseudo-Anosov map, or (ii) is totally periodic admits a genus one Birkhoff section. This provides evidence for a conjecture of Fried and Ghys. The proof utilizes a result of the author on the horizontal Goodman surgery operation. To apply this result for showing (i), we establish correspondence between horizontal Goodman surgery on pseudo-Anosov flows and horizontal surgery on veering triangulations in the layered setting.

Anosov flows with the same periodic orbits

Abstract:In [Orbit equivalences of pseudo-Anosov flows, <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2211.10505" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2211.10505">arXiv:2211.10505</a>], it was proved that transitive pseudo-Anosov flows on any closed 3-manifold are determined up to orbit equivalence by the set of free homotopy classes represented by periodic orbits, provided their orbit space does not contain a feature called a "tree of scalloped regions." In this article we describe what happens in these exceptional cases: we show what topological features in the manifold correspond to trees of scalloped regions, completely classify the flows which do have the same free homotopy data, and construct explicit examples of flows with the same free homotopy data that are not orbit equivalent.

Flows of $G_2$-structures, II: Curvature, torsion, symbols, and functionals

Abstract:We continue the investigation of general geometric flows of $G_2$-structures initiated by the third author in "Flows of $G_2$-structures, I." Specifically, we determine the possible geometric flows (up to lower order terms) of $G_2$-structures which are second order quasilinear, by explicitly computing all independent second order differential invariants of $G_2$-structures which are $3$-forms. There are four symmetric $2$-tensors and two vector fields. We do this by deriving explicit computational descriptions of the decompositions of the curvature and the covariant derivative of the torsion into irreducible $G_2$-representations, as well as the decomposition of the $G_2$-Bianchi identity into independent relations. We also show that these six tensors arise as leading order contributions to the Euler-Lagrange equations for the energy functionals of the four independent torsion components, and we establish a $G_2$-analogue of the classical block decomposition of the Riemann curvature operator on oriented $4$-dimensional Riemannian manifolds. Finally, we present a large class of geometric flows of $G_2$-structures which are directly amenable to a deTurck type trick to establish short-time existence and uniqueness, with no initial assumption on the torsion, vastly generalizing an earlier result of Weiss-Witt for the negative gradient flow of the Dirichlet energy. This result is proved through a careful analysis of the principal symbols of the linearizations of these operators, establishing particular linear combinations for which one can prove that the failure of strict parabolicity is due precisely to the diffeomorphism invariance. A detailed introductory section on various foundational results of $G_2$-structure, several of which are not readily available in the literature, should be of wider interest and applicability.

Abstract:We obtain restrictions on which groups can admit relatively Anosov representations into specified target Lie groups, by examining the topology of possible Bowditch boundaries and how they interact with the Anosov limit maps. For instance, we prove that, up to finite index, any group admitting a relatively Anosov representation into SL(3,R) is a free group or surface group, and any group admitting a relatively k-Anosov representation into Sp(2m,R), where k is an odd integer between 1 and m, is a surface group or a free product of nilpotent groups. We also obtain a characterization of groups admitting relatively 1-Anosov representations into SL(4,R), general bounds on the dimension of the Bowditch boundary of groups admitting relatively Anosov representations into SL(d,R), statements relating spheres in the Bowditch boundary to the (non-)existence of relatively Anosov representations, and a characterization of groups of cohomological dimension at least d-1 admitting relatively 1-Anosov representations into SL(d,R).

Abstract:Any smooth surface in R^3 may be flattened along the z-axis, and the flattened surface becomes close to a billiard table in R^2 . We show that, under some hypotheses, the geodesic flow of this surface converges locally uniformly to the billiard flow. Moreover, if the billiard is dispersive and has finite horizon, then the geodesic flow of the corresponding surface is Anosov. We apply this result to the theory of mechanical linkages and their dynamics: we provide a new example of a simple linkage whose physical behavior is Anosov. For the first time, the edge lengths of the mechanism are given explicitly.
