Abstract:In this paper, we prove that for any flow $\Psi$ obtained by a Dehn-Fried surgery on an expansive (or equivalently topological pseudo-Anosov) flow $\Phi$ in dimension 3, $\Psi$ is expansive if and only if its stable and unstable foliations do not contain $1$-prong singularities.

Abstract:Let X be a smooth subvariety of CP^N. We study a flow, called balancing flow, on the space of projectively equivalent embeddings of X, which attempts to deform the given embedding into a balanced one. If L->X is an ample line bundle, considering embeddings via H^0(L^k) gives a sequence of balancing flows. We prove that, provided these flows are started at appropriate points, they converge to Calabi flow for as long as it exists. This result is the parabolic analogue of Donaldson's theorem relating balanced embeddings to metrics with constant scalar curvature [JDG 59(3):479-522, 2001]. In our proof we combine Donaldson's techniques with an asymptotic result of Liu-Ma [arXiv:math/0601260v2] which, as we explain, describes the asymptotic behaviour of the derivative of the map FS\circ Hilb whose fixed points are balanced metrics.
Surgery on Anosov flows using bi-contact geometry

Abstract:Using bi-contact geometry, we define a new type of Dehn surgery on an Anosov flow with orientable weak invariant foliations. The Anosovity of the new flow is strictly connected to contact geometry and the Reeb dynamics of the defining bi-contact structure. This approach gives new insights into the properties of the flows produced by Goodman surgery and clarifies under which conditions Goodman's construction yields an Anosov flow. Our main application gives a necessary and sufficient condition to generate a contact Anosov flow by Foulon-Hasselblatt Legendrian surgery on a geodesic flow. In particular we show that this is possible if and only if the surgery is performed along a simple closed geodesic. As a corollary we have that any (positive) skewed R-covered Anosov flow obtained by surgery on a closed orbit of a geodesic flow is orbit equivalent to a (positive) contact Anosov flow.

Abstract:We introduce a generalization of Goodman surgery to the category of projectively Anosov flows. This construction is performed along a knot that is simultaneously Legendrian and transverse for a supporting bi-contact structure. If the flow is Anosov there is a particular class of supporting bi-contact structures that induce Lorentzian metrics satisfying Barbot's criterion of hyperbolicity. Foulon and Hasselblatt construct new contact Anosov flows by surgery from a geodesic flow. We generalize their result showing that in any contact Anosov flow there is a family of Legendrian knots that can be used to produce new contact Anosov flows by surgery. Outside of the realm of Anosov flows we generate new examples of projectively Anosov flows on hyperbolic 3-manifolds. These flows contain an invariant submanifold of genus g>0. We also give some application to contact geometry: we interpret the bi-contact surgery in terms of classic contact-Legendrian surgery and admissible-inadmissible transverse surgery and we deduce some (hyper)tightness result for contact and transverse surgeries.

Abstract:We present a combinatorial approach to the existence of foliations and contact structures transverse to a given pseudo-Anosov flow. Let $\varphi$ be a transitive pseudo-Anosov flow on a closed oriented 3-manifold. Our main technical result is that every codimension 1 foliation transverse to $\varphi$ is carried by a single branched surface coming from a veering triangulation. Combined with recent breakthrough work of Massoni, this reduces the existence problem for transverse foliations to something like the feasibility of a system of inequalities (rather than equations!) over $Homeo_+([0,1])$. As a proof of concept, we show that for the hyperbolic, fibered, non-L-space knot $10_{145}$, the natural pseudo-Anosov flow on the slope $s$ Dehn surgery admits a transverse foliation for $s\in (-\infty, 3)$, but does not admit such a foliation for $s\in [5,\infty)$. The negative result is part of a more general Milnor--Wood type phenomenon which puts limitations on some well known methods for constructing taut foliations on Dehn surgeries.

Reconstruction of Anosov flows from infinity

Abstract:Every pseudo-Anosov flow $\phi$ in a closed $3$-manifold $M$ gives rise to an action of $\pi_1(M)$ on a circle $S^{1}_{\infty}(\phi)$ from infinity \cite{Fen12}, with a pair of invariant \emph{almost} laminations. From certain actions on $S^{1}$ with invariant almost laminations, we reconstruct flows and manifolds realizing these actions, including all orientable transitive pseudo-Anosov flows in closed $3$-manifolds. Our construction provides a geometry model for such flows and manifolds induced from $\mathcal{D} \times \mathcal{D}$, where $\mathcal{D}$ is the Poincaré disk with $\partial \mathcal{D}$ identified with $S^{1}_{\infty}(\phi)$. In addition, our result applies to Cannon conjecture under the assumption that certain group-equivariant sphere-filling Peano curve exists, which offers a description of orientable quasigeodesic pseudo-Anosov flows in hyperbolic $3$-manifolds in terms of group actions on $\partial \mathbb{H}^{3} \times \partial \mathbb{H}^{3} \times \partial \mathbb{H}^{3}$.

Horizontal Goodman surgery and almost equivalence of pseudo-Anosov flows

Abstract:We provide an exposition of a `horizontal' generalization of Goodman's surgery operation on (pseudo-)Anosov flows. This operation is performed by cutting along a specific kind of annulus that is transverse to the flow and regluing with a Dehn twist of the appropriate sign. We then show that performing horizontal Goodman surgery on a transitive pseudo-Anosov flow yields an almost equivalent flow, i.e. the original flow and the surgered flow are orbit equivalent after drilling out a finite collection of closed orbits. We obtain some almost equivalence results by applying this theorem on examples of the surgery operation. Along the way, we also show a structural stability result for pseudo-Anosov flows.

Examples of Anosov flows with genus one Birkhoff sections

Abstract:We show that a transitive Anosov flow with orientable stable and unstable foliations that either (i) admits a Birkhoff section whose first return map is a Penner type pseudo-Anosov map, or (ii) is totally periodic admits a genus one Birkhoff section. This provides evidence for a conjecture of Fried and Ghys. The proof utilizes a result of the author on the horizontal Goodman surgery operation. To apply this result for showing (i), we establish correspondence between horizontal Goodman surgery on pseudo-Anosov flows and horizontal surgery on veering triangulations in the layered setting.

Abstract:Let $F$ be a proper essential immersed surface in a hyperbolic 3-manifold $M$ with boundary disjoint from a torus boundary component $T$ of $M$. Let $\alpha$ be the set of coannular slopes of $F$ on $T$. The main theorem of the paper shows that there is a constant $K$ and a finite set of slopes $\Lambda$ on $T$, such that if $\beta$ is a slope on $T$ with $\Delta(\beta, \alpha_i) > K$ for all $\alpha_i$ in $\alpha$, and $\beta$ is not in $\Lambda$, then $F$ remains incompressible after Dehn filling on $T$ along the slope $\beta$. In certain sense, this means that $F$ survives most Dehn fillings. The proof uses minimal surface theory, integral of differential forms, and properties of geometrically finite groups. As a consequence of our method, it will also be shown that Freedman tubings of immersed geometrically finite surfaces are essential if the tubes are long enough.

Abstract:In this paper, we introduce a new method to establish existence of geometric flows with surgery. In contrast to all prior constructions of flows with surgery in the literature our new approach does not require any a priori estimates in the smooth setting. Instead, our approach is based on a hybrid compactness theorem, which takes smooth limits near the surgery regions but weak limits in all other regions. For concreteness, here we develop our new method in the classical setting of mean-convex surfaces in $\mathbb{R}^3$, thus giving a new proof of the existence results due to Brendle-Huisken and Haslhofer-Kleiner. Other settings, including in particular free boundary surfaces, will be addressed in subsequent work.

Abstract:We study Dehn surgeries on null-homotopic knots that yield fibred $3$--manifolds when an additional (but natural) homological restriction is imposed. The major tool used is Gabai's theory of sutured manifold decomposition. Such surgeries are negative examples to a question of Michel Boileau. Another result we will prove is about surgeries which reduce the Thurston norm of a fibred manifold.

Abstract:In this paper we show that a geodesic flow of a compact surface without conjugate points of genus greater than one is time-preserving semi-conjugate to a continuous expansive flow which is topologically mixing and has a local product structure. As an application we show that the geodesic flow of a compact surface without conjugate points of genus greater than one has a unique measure of maximal entropy. This gives an alternative proof of Climenhaga–Knieper–War Theorem.

Existence of arbitrary large numbers of non-$\mathbb R$-covered Anosov flows on hyperbolic $3$-manifolds

Abstract:The purpose of this paper is to prove that, for every $n\in \mathbb N$, there exists a closed hyperbolic $3$-manifold $M$ which carries at least $n$ non-$\mathbb R$-covered Anosov flows, that are pairwise non-orbitally equivalent. Due to a recent result by Fenley, such Anosov flows are quasi-geodesic. Hence, we get the existence of hyperbolic $3$-manifolds carrying many pairwise non-orbitally equivalent quasi-geodesic Anosov flows. Based on the orbit space theory of Anosov flows developed by Fenley and Barbot, we completely studied the connected components of edge-adjacent lozenges, say, clusters in the orbit spaces of the Anosov flows in construction. The number of the lozenges of a cluster and a type of orientations on the clusters together are used as dynamical invariants to prove that the flows we construct are not orbitally equivalent. We believe that those dynamical invariants could be used in a much wider context.

Abstract:We consider contracting flows in $(n+1)$-dimensional hyperbolic space and expanding flows in $(n+1)$-dimensional de Sitter space. When the flow hypersurfaces are strictly convex we relate the contracting hypersurfaces and the expanding hypersurfaces by the Gauss map. The contracting hypersurfaces shrink to a point $x_0$ in finite time while the expanding hypersurfaces converge to the maximal slice $\{ \tau =0\}$. After rescaling, by the same scale factor, the resclaed contracting hypersurfaces converge to a unit geodesic sphere, while the rescaled expanding hypersufaces converge to slice $\{ \tau = -1\}$ exponential fast in $C^\infty(\mathbb{S}^n)$.

Abstract:The main result of this paper is a universal finiteness theorem for the set of all small dilatation pseudo-Anosov homeomorphisms, ranging over all surfaces. More precisely, we consider pseudo-Anosovs F:S to S with |chi(S)| log(lambda(F)) bounded above by some constant, and we prove that, after puncturing the surfaces at the singular points of the stable foliations, the resulting set of mapping tori is finite. Said differently, there is a finite set of fibered hyperbolic 3-manifolds so that all small dilatation pseudo-Anosovs occur as the monodromy of a Dehn filling on one of the 3-manifolds in the finite list, where the filling is on the boundary slope of a fiber.

Abstract:We study two notions of expansiveness for continuous semiflows: expansiveness in the sense of Alves, Carvalho and Siqueira (2017), and an adaptation of positive expansiveness in the sense of Artigue (2014). We prove that if $X$ is a metric space and $\phi$ is an expansive semiflow on $X$ according to the first definition, then the semiflow $\phi$ is trivial and the space $X$ is uniformly discrete. In particular, if $X$ is compact then it is finite. With respect to the second definition, we prove that if $X$ is a compact metric space and $\phi$ is a positive expansive semiflow on it, then $X$ is a union of at most finitely many closed orbits, unbranched tails and isolated singularities.

Abstract:We give a proof of the C 1 {C^1} stability conjecture for three-dimensional flows, i.e., prove that there exists a hyperbolic structure over the Ω \Omega set for the structurally stable three-dimensional flows. Mañé’s proof for the discrete case motivates our proof and we find his perturbation techniques crucial. In proving this conjecture we have overcome several new difficulties, e.g., the change of period after perturbation, the ergodic closing lemma for flows, the existence of dominated splitting over Ω ∖ P \Omega \backslash \mathcal {P} where P \mathcal {P} is the set of singularities for the flow, the discontinuity of the contracting rate function on singularities, etc. Based on these we finally succeed in separating the singularities from the other periodic orbits for the structurally stable systems, i.e., we create unstable saddle connections if there are accumulations of periodic orbits on the singularities.

Abstract:Abstract We study closed connected orientable 3-manifolds obtained by Dehn surgery along the oriented components of a link, introduced and considered by Motegi and Song (2005) and Ichihara et al. (2008). For such manifolds, we find a finite balanced group presentation of the fundamental group and describe exceptional surgeries. This allows us to construct an infinite family of tunnel number one strongly invertible hyperbolic knots with three parameters, which admit toroidal surgeries and Seifert fibered surgeries. Among the obtained results, we mention that for every integer $$n >5$$ n > 5 there are infinitely many hyperbolic knots in the 3–sphere, whose $$(n-2)$$ ( n - 2 ) and $$(n+1)$$ ( n + 1 ) -surgeries are toroidal, and $$(n-1)$$ ( n - 1 ) and n -surgeries are Seifert fibered.
