Abstract:We prove a sharp bound for the regularity of a squarefree monomial ideal with a linear presentation. This result also answers in positive a question on the cohomological dimension of squarefree monomial ideals satisfying Serre's $S_2$-condition proposed by Dao and Takagi.

Abstract:In a recent work, Fouli and Lin generalized a Villarreal's result and showed that if each connected components of the line graph of a squarefree monomial ideal contains at most a unique odd cycle, then this ideal is of linear type. In this short note, we reprove this result with Villarreal's original ideas together with a method of Conca and De Negri. We also propose a class of squarefree monomial ideals of linear type.

Abstract:Ideals in infinite-dimensional polynomial rings that are invariant under the action of the monoid of increasing functions have been extensively studied recently. Of particular interest is the asymptotic behavior of truncations of such an ideal in finite-dimensional polynomial subrings. It has been conjectured that the Castelnuovo--Mumford regularity and projective dimension are eventual linear functions along such truncations. In the present paper we provide evidence for these conjectures. We show that for monomial ideals the projective dimension is eventually linear, while the regularity is asymptotically linear.

Abstract:Recently, H. Dao and R. Nair gave a combinatorial description of simplicial complexes such that the squarefree reduction of the Stanley–Reisner ideal of has the WLP in degree 1 and characteristic zero. In this paper, we apply the connections between analytic spread of equigenerated monomial ideals, mixed multiplicities and birational monomial maps to give a sufficient and necessary condition for the squarefree reduction to satisfy the WLP in degree i and characteristic zero in terms of mixed multiplicities of monomial ideals that contain combinatorial information of , we call them incidence ideals. As a consequence, we give an upper bound to the possible failures of the WLP of in degree i in positive characteristics in terms of mixed multiplicities. Moreover, we extend Dao and Nair's criterion to arbitrary monomial ideals in positive odd characteristics.

Uniform bounds on projective dimension and Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity

Abstract:In this article we obtain uniform effective upper bounds for the projective dimension and the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of homogeneous ideals inside a standard graded polynomial ring $S$ over a field. Such bounds are independent of the number of variables of $S$, in the spirit of Stillman's conjecture and of the Ananyan-Hochster's theorem, and depend on partial data extracted from the beginning or the end of the resolution. In this direction, we extend a result of McCullough from 2012 regarding a bound on regularity in terms of half the syzygies to a bound on the projective dimension and the regularity of an ideal in terms of a fraction of the syzygies.

Abstract: When a monomial ideal has linear quotients with respect to an admissible order of increasing support-degree, we provide two proofs of different flavors to show that it is componentwise support-linear. We also introduce the variable decomposable monomial ideals. In squarefree case, these ideals correspond to the vertex decomposable simplicial complexes. We study the relationships of the variable decomposable ideals with weakly polymatroidal ideals, weakly stable ideals and ideals with linear quotients. We also investigate the componentwise properties of all these ideals.

Abstract:The goal of this paper is the fine structure of the ideals in the title, with emphasis on the properties of the associated Rees algebra and the special fiber. The watershed between the present approach and some of the previous work in the literature is that here one does not assume that the ideals in question satisfy the common generic properties. One exception is a recent work of N. P. H. Lan which inspired the present work. Here we recover and extend his work. We strongly focus on the behavior of the ideals of minors of the corresponding so-called Hilbert--Burch matrix and on conjugation features of the latter. We apply the results to three important models: linearly presented ideals of plane fat points, reciprocal ideals of hyperplane arrangements and linearly presented monomial ideals.

On the strong persistence property and normally torsion-freeness of square-free monomial ideals

Abstract:In this paper, we first show that any square-free monomial ideal in $K[x_1, x_2, x_3, x_4, x_5]$ has the strong persistence property. Next we will provide a criterion for a minimal counterexample to the Conforti-Cornuejols conjecture. Finally we give a necessary and sufficient condition to determine the normally torsion-freeness of a linear combination of two normally torsion-free square-free monomial ideals.

Abstract:Let $R$ be a standard graded algebra over a field. We investigate how the singularities of $R$ affect its $h$-vector, which is the coefficients of the numerator of its Hilbert series. The most concrete consequences of our work asserts that if $R$ satisfies Serre's condition $(S_r)$ and have reasonable singularities (Du Bois on the punctured spectrum or $F$-pure), then $h_0,\dots, h_r\geq 0$. Furthermore the multiplicity of $R$ is at least $h_0+h_1+\dots+h_{r-1}$. We also prove that equality in many cases forces $R$ to be Cohen-Macaulay. The main technical tools are sharp bounds on regularity of certain Ext modules, which can be viewed as Kodaira-type vanishing statements for Du Bois and $F$-singularities. Many corollaries are deduced, for instance that nice singularities of small codimension must be Cohen-Macaulay. Our results build on and extend previous work by de Fernex-Ein, Eisenbud-Goto, Huneke-Smith, Murai-Terai and others.

Abstract:Let $K$ be a field and $S=K[x_1,\ldots,x_n]$, the ring of polynomials in $n$ variables, over $K$. Using the fact that the Hilbert depth is an upper bound for the Stanley depth of a quotient of squarefree monomial ideals $0\subset I\subsetneq J\subset S$, we prove several combinatorial inequalities which involve the coefficients of the polynomial $f(t)=(1+t+\cdots+t^{m-1})^n$.

Abstract:Lyubeznik introduced the concept of size of a monomial ideal and showed that the size of a monomial ideal increased by $1$ is a lower bound for its depth. Associated with this, Herzog, Popescu and Vladoiu showed that the size increased by $1$ is simultaneously a lower bound for its Stanley depth. It turns out that the splitting-variables technique in their paper is particularly suited for comparing the Stanley depth and size of squarefree monomial ideals. In this paper, we generalize this technique and investigate the quotient $I/J$ when $J\subsetneq I$ are general monomial ideals. As an application, we consider lower bounds for Stanley depth of quotients of monomial ideals under various conditions. Through Alexander duality, we also consider upper bounds for the Stanley support-regularity of edge ideals of clutters. Meanwhile, recently, Katthän and Seyed Fakhari established another lower bound for depth and Stanley depth of $I/J$ in terms of the lcm number. Using the splitting-variables technique, we provide an alternate proof of their result.
Average Behavior of Minimal Free Resolutions of Monomial Ideals

Abstract:We describe the typical homological properties of monomial ideals defined by random generating sets. We show that, under mild assumptions, random monomial ideals (RMI's) will almost always have resolutions of maximal length; that is, the projective dimension will almost always be $n$, where $n$ is the number of variables in the polynomial ring. We give a rigorous proof that Cohen-Macaulayness is a "rare" property. We characterize when an RMI is generic/strongly generic, and when it "is Scarf"---in other words, when the algebraic Scarf complex of $M\subset S=k[x_1,\ldots,x_n]$ gives a minimal free resolution of $S/M$. As a result we see that, outside of a very specific ratio of model parameters, RMI's are Scarf only when they are generic. We end with a discussion of the average magnitude of Betti numbers.

Abstract:Let $K$ be a infinite field, $S=K[x_1,\ldots,x_n]$ and $0\subset I\subsetneq J\subset S$ two squarefree monomial ideals. In a previous paper we proved a new formula for the Hilbert depth of $J/I$. In this paper, we illustrate how one can use the Stanley-Reisner correspondence between (relative) simplicial complexes and (quotients of) squarefree monomial ideals, in order to reobtain some basic properties of the Hilbert depth. More precisely, we show that $\operatorname{depth}(J/I)\leq \operatorname{hdepth}(J/I)\leq \dim(J/I)$. Also, we show that $\operatorname{hdepth}(I)\geq \operatorname{hdepth}(S/I)+1$, if $S/I$ is Cohen-Macaulay.

Abstract:Let $S$ be a polynomial algebra over a field. We study classes of monomial ideals (as for example lexsegment ideals) of $S$ having minimal depth. In particular, Stanley's conjecture holds for these ideals. Also we show that if Stanley's conjecture holds for a square free monomial ideal then it holds for all its trivial modifications.

Abstract:Let $I\subseteq S=K[x_1,\ldots,x_n]$ be a homogeneous ideal equipped with a monomial order $<$. We show that if $\operatorname{in}_<(I)$ is a square-free monomial ideal, then $S/I$ and $S/\operatorname{in}_<(I)$ have the same connectedness dimension. We also show that graphs related to connectedness of these quotient rings have the same number of components. We also provide consequences regarding Lyubeznik numbers. We obtain these results by furthering the study of connectedness modulo a parameter in a local ring.

Abstract:The problem of characterizing a real polynomial $f$ as a sum of squares of polynomials on a real algebraic variety $V$ dates back to the pioneering work of Hilbert in [Mathematische Annalen 32.3 (1888): 342-350]. In this paper, we investigate this problem with a focus on cases where the real zeros of $f$ on $V$ are singular points of $V$. By using optimality conditions and irreducible decomposition, we provide a positive answer to the following essential question of polynomial optimization: Are there always exact semidefinite programs to compute the minimum value attained by a given polynomial over a given real algebraic variety? Our answer implies that Lasserre's hierarchy, which is known as a bridge between convex and non-convex programs with algebraic structures, has finite convergence not only in the generic case but also in the general case. As a result, we constructively prove that each hyperbolic program is equivalent to a semidefinite program.

Abstract:In this article, we partially confirm a conjecture, proposed by Cimpoeaş, Keller, Shen, Streib, and Young, on the Stanley depth of squarefree Veronese ideals I n, d . This conjecture suggests that, for positive integers 1 ≤ d ≤ n, . Herzog, Vlădoiu, and Zheng established a connection between the Stanley depths of quotients of monomial ideals and interval partitions of certain associated posets. Based on this connection, Keller, Shen, Streib, and Young recently developed a useful combinatorial tool to analyze the interval partitions of the posets associated with the squarefree Veronese ideals. We modify their ideas and prove the above conjecture for . We also obtain a lower bound of sdepth(I n, d ) for any 1 ≤ d ≤ n. Our results greatly improve Theorem 1.1 in [13], and moreover, our construction leads to a direct proof of this theorem without using graph theory.
Lefschetz properties of squarefree monomial ideals via Rees algebras

Abstract:The theory of Rees algebras of monomial ideals has been extensively studied, and as a consequence, many (sometimes partial) equivalences between algebraic properties of monomial ideals, and combinatorial properties of simplicial complexes and hypergraphs are known. In this paper we show how this theory can be used to find interesting examples in the theory of Lefschetz properties. We explore the consequences of known results from Lefschetz properties to the Rees algebras of squarefree monomial ideals, for example in the calculation of analytic spread. In particular, we show a connection between symbolic powers and $f$-vectors of simplicial complexes. This perspective leads us to a generalization of Postnikov's "mixed Eulerian numbers". We prove the positivity of such numbers in our setting.
