Abstract:Let $S=K[x_1,\ldots,x_n]$ be the ring of polynomials over a field $K$. Given two monomial ideals $0\subset I\subsetneq J \subset S$, we present a new method to compute the Hilbert depth of $J/I$. As an application, we show that if $u\in S$ is a monomial regular of $S/I$, then $\operatorname{hdepth}(S/I)\geq \operatorname{hdepth}(S/(I,u))\geq \operatorname{hdepth}(S/I)-1.$ Also, we reprove the formula of the Hilbert depth of a squarefree Veronese ideal.

Remarks on the Hilbert depth of squarefree monomial ideals

Abstract:Let $K$ be a infinite field, $S=K[x_1,\ldots,x_n]$ and $0\subset I\subsetneq J\subset S$ two squarefree monomial ideals. In a previous paper we proved a new formula for the Hilbert depth of $J/I$. In this paper, we illustrate how one can use the Stanley-Reisner correspondence between (relative) simplicial complexes and (quotients of) squarefree monomial ideals, in order to reobtain some basic properties of the Hilbert depth. More precisely, we show that $\operatorname{depth}(J/I)\leq \operatorname{hdepth}(J/I)\leq \dim(J/I)$. Also, we show that $\operatorname{hdepth}(I)\geq \operatorname{hdepth}(S/I)+1$, if $S/I$ is Cohen-Macaulay.

Abstract:In this article, we partially confirm a conjecture, proposed by Cimpoeaş, Keller, Shen, Streib, and Young, on the Stanley depth of squarefree Veronese ideals I n, d . This conjecture suggests that, for positive integers 1 ≤ d ≤ n, . Herzog, Vlădoiu, and Zheng established a connection between the Stanley depths of quotients of monomial ideals and interval partitions of certain associated posets. Based on this connection, Keller, Shen, Streib, and Young recently developed a useful combinatorial tool to analyze the interval partitions of the posets associated with the squarefree Veronese ideals. We modify their ideas and prove the above conjecture for . We also obtain a lower bound of sdepth(I n, d ) for any 1 ≤ d ≤ n. Our results greatly improve Theorem 1.1 in [13], and moreover, our construction leads to a direct proof of this theorem without using graph theory.

Abstract:We prove that if $I$ is a monomial ideal with linear quotients in a ring of polynomials $S$ in $n$ indeterminates and $\operatorname{depth}(S/I)=n-2$, then $\operatorname{sdepth}(S/I)=n-2$ and, if $I$ is squarefree, $\operatorname{hdepth}(S/I)=n-2$.

Abstract:Let K be a field and S = K [ x 1 ,…, x n ]. In 1982, Stanley defined what is now called the Stanley depth of an S -module M , denoted sdepth ( M ), and conjectured that depth ( M )≤sdepth ( M ) for all finitely generated S -modules M . This conjecture remains open for most cases. However, Herzog, Vladoiu and Zheng recently proposed a method of attack in the case when M = I / J with J ⊂ I being monomial S -ideals. Specifically, their method associates M with a partially ordered set. In this paper we take advantage of this association by using combinatorial tools to analyze squarefree Veronese ideals in S . In particular, if I n , d is the squarefree Veronese ideal generated by all squarefree monomials of degree d , we show that if 1≤ d ≤ n <5 d +4, then sdepth ( I n , d )=⌊( n − d )/( d +1)⌋+ d , and if d ≥1 and n ≥5 d +4, then d +3≤sdepth ( I n , d )≤⌊( n − d )/( d +1)⌋+ d .

Abstract:Let $K$ be a field and $S=K[x_1,\ldots,x_n]$, the ring of polynomials in $n$ variables, over $K$. Using the fact that the Hilbert depth is an upper bound for the Stanley depth of a quotient of squarefree monomial ideals $0\subset I\subsetneq J\subset S$, we prove several combinatorial inequalities which involve the coefficients of the polynomial $f(t)=(1+t+\cdots+t^{m-1})^n$.

Abstract:We give an explicit formula for Euler characteristics of line bundles on the Hilbert scheme of points on $\mathbb{P}^1\times\mathbb{P}^1$. Combined with structural results of Ellingsrud, Göttsche, and Lehn, this determines the Euler characteristic of any line bundle on the Hilbert scheme of points on any smooth, projective surface. We also give an enumerative description of the dimensions of spaces of global sections of ample line bundles on Hilbert schemes of points on Hirzebruch surfaces, extending the polytope-line bundle correspondence on the underlying toric surface.

Abstract:For every positive integer $n$, consider the linear operator $\U_{n}$ on polynomials of degree at most $d$ with integer coefficients defined as follows: if we write $\frac{h(t)}{(1 - t)^{d + 1}} = \sum_{m \geq 0} g(m) t^{m}$, for some polynomial $g(m)$ with rational coefficients, then $\frac{\U_{n}h(t)}{(1- t)^{d + 1}} = \sum_{m \geq 0} g(nm) t^{m}$. We show that there exists a positive integer $n_{d}$, depending only on $d$, such that if $h(t)$ is a polynomial of degree at most $d$ with nonnegative integer coefficients and $h(0) \geq 1$, then for $n \geq n_{d}$, $\U_{n}h(t)$ has simple, real, strictly negative roots and positive, strictly log concave and strictly unimodal coefficients. Applications are given to Ehrhart $\delta$-polynomials and unimodular triangulations of dilations of lattice polytopes, as well as Hilbert series of Veronese subrings of Cohen--MacCauley graded rings.

Abstract:A conjecture of Mallows and Sloane conveys the dominance of Hilbert series for finding basic invariants of finite linear groups if the Hilbert series of the invariant ring is of a certain explicit canonical form. However, the conjecture does not hold in general by a well-known counterexample of Stanley. In this article, we give a constraint on lower bounds for the degrees of homogeneous system of parameters of rings of invariants of finite linear groups depending on the universal denominator of Hilbert series defined by Derksen. We consider the conjecture with the universal denominator on abelian groups and provide some criteria guaranteeing the existence of homogeneous system of parameters of certain degrees. In this case, Stanley's counterexample could be avoided, and the homogeneous system of parameters is optimal.

Abstract: Let $I\subset S=\KK[x_1,...,x_n]$ be a lexsegment ideal, generated by monomials of degree $d$. The main aim of this paper is to characterize when the Hilbert depth of $I$ will be 1, in the standard graded case. In addition to this, we will give an estimate of depth of squarefree monomial ideals, generalizing a result of Popescu. We will also show that Stanley conjecture holds for squarefree stable ideals, in the multigraded case.

Abstract:We give a criterion for a collection of polynomials to be a universal Gröbner basis for an ideal in terms of the multidegree of the closure of the corresponding affine variety in $(\mathbb{P}^1)^N$. This criterion can be used to give simple proofs of several existing results on universal Gröbner bases. We introduce fine Schubert polynomials, which record the multidegrees of the closures of matrix Schubert varieties in $(\mathbb{P}^1)^{n^2}$. We compute the fine Schubert polynomials of permutations $w$ where the coefficients of the Schubert polynomials of $w$ and $w^{-1}$ are all either 0 or 1, and we use this to give a universal Gröbner basis for the ideal of the matrix Schubert variety of such a permutation.

Abstract:In a recent work, Fouli and Lin generalized a Villarreal's result and showed that if each connected components of the line graph of a squarefree monomial ideal contains at most a unique odd cycle, then this ideal is of linear type. In this short note, we reprove this result with Villarreal's original ideas together with a method of Conca and De Negri. We also propose a class of squarefree monomial ideals of linear type.

Abstract:In this article, we provide explicit and effective bounds for Frobenius test exponents, integers crucial for computing Frobenius closures of parameter ideals, in new settings and articulate their explicit computation along common graded constructions. We do this via the study of variants of F -nilpotent singularities. In particular, we explore how (generalized) weakly F -nilpotent singularities behave under Segre products, Veronese subrings, and the formation of diagonal hypersurface algebras. To accomplish these tasks, we introduce the generalized F-depth in analogy to Lyubeznik's F -depth. These depth-like invariants track (generalized) weakly F -nilpotent singularities in a similar fashion as (generalized) depth tracks (generalized) Cohen-Macaulay singularities.

Abstract:For a semisimple, simply-connected linear algebraic group, $G$, and parabolic subgroup, $P\subseteq G$, we use the fact that the Hilbert polynomial of the equivariant embedding of $G/P$ is equal to the Hilbert function to compute an explicit formula for the Hilbert series of $G/P$ in terms of the dimensions of finitely many irreducible representations of $G$. As an example, we compute the Hilbert series of the adjoint variety of $SL(n+1,\mathbb{C})$. We conclude by computing the linear term of the numerator of the Hilbert series of any fundamental representation in type $A$.

Abstract:Lyubeznik introduced the concept of size of a monomial ideal and showed that the size of a monomial ideal increased by $1$ is a lower bound for its depth. Associated with this, Herzog, Popescu and Vladoiu showed that the size increased by $1$ is simultaneously a lower bound for its Stanley depth. It turns out that the splitting-variables technique in their paper is particularly suited for comparing the Stanley depth and size of squarefree monomial ideals. In this paper, we generalize this technique and investigate the quotient $I/J$ when $J\subsetneq I$ are general monomial ideals. As an application, we consider lower bounds for Stanley depth of quotients of monomial ideals under various conditions. Through Alexander duality, we also consider upper bounds for the Stanley support-regularity of edge ideals of clutters. Meanwhile, recently, Katthän and Seyed Fakhari established another lower bound for depth and Stanley depth of $I/J$ in terms of the lcm number. Using the splitting-variables technique, we provide an alternate proof of their result.
Rank Zero Segre Integrals on Hilbert Schemes of Points on Surfaces

Abstract:Abstract The generating function of the Segre integrals on Hilbert schemes of points on a surface $X$ can be determined by five universal series $A_{0}(z)$, $A_{1}(z)$, $A_{2}(z)$, $A_{3}(z)$, $A_{4}(z)$, due to the result of Ellingsrud–Göttsche–Lehn. These five series do not depend on the surface $X$ and depend on the element $\alpha \in K(X)$, to which the Segre integrals are associated, only through the rank. Marian–Oprea–Pandharipande have determined $A_{0}(z),A_{1}(z),A_{2}(z)$ for all ranks. For rank 0, it is easy to see $A_{4}(z)=1$. Marian–Oprea–Pandharipande also conjectured that $A_{3}(z)=A_{0}(z)A_{1}(z)$ for rank 0. We prove this conjecture by showing that when $X$ is the projective plan, the Segre integrals associated to the structure sheaf of a curve in the anti-canoncial class are all zero. Hence, the rank zero Segre integrals on the Hilbert schemes of points for all surfaces are determined.
