Abstract:In this article we trace the genesis of a theorem that gives for the first time examples of Galois group $G_S$ of the maximal $p$-extension of $\mathbb{Q}$, unramified outside a finite set of primes not containing $p$, that are of cohomological dimension $2$. The pro-$p$-group $G_S$ is a fab pro-$p$-group which means that all its derived factors are finite.

Abstract:Let p be a prime number. One of the most difficult and important questions in Galois theory these days is determining which pro- p groups can occur as maximal pro- p Galois groups. Some restrictions of the structure of maximal pro- p Galois groups are already known, and therefore, the families of all pro- p groups satisfying these restrictions are in the center of the research. In the current paper we deal with three of these families: The family of all pro- p groups which satisfy hereditarily the n -vanishing Massey product property, the family of 1-cyclotomic oriented pro- p groups, and the family of pro- p groups that are hereditarily of p -absolute Galois type. We show that all these families are closed under taking profinite completion of each order.

On tamely ramified infinite Galois extensions

Abstract:For a number field $K$, we consider $K^{\rm ta}$ the maximal tamely ramified algebraic extension of~$K$, and its Galois group $G^{\rm ta}_K= Gal(K^{ta}/K)$. Choose a prime $p$ such that $\mu_p \not \subset K$. Our guiding aim is to characterize the finitely generated pro-$p$ quotients of~$G^{\rm ta}$. We give a {unified point of view} by introducing the notion of {\it stably inertially generated} pro-$p$ groups~$G$, for which linear groups are archetypes. This key notion {is compatible} with local {\it tame liftings} as used in the Scholz-Reichardt Theorem. We realize every finitely generated pro-$p$ group~$G$ which is stably inertially generated as a quotient of $G^{\rm ta}$. Further examples of groups that we realize as quotients of $G^{\rm ta}$ include congruence subgroups of special linear groups over ${\mathbb Z}_p[[ T_1,\cdots, T_n ]]$. Finally, we give classes of groups which cannot be realized as quotients of $G^{\rm ta}_{\mathbb Q}$.

Galois scaffolds for $p$-extensions in characteristic $p$

Abstract:Let $K$ be a local field of characteristic $p>0$ with perfect residue field and let $G$ be a finite $p$-group. In this paper we use Saltman's construction of a generic $G$-extension of rings of characteristic $p$ to construct totally ramified $G$-extensions $L/K$ that have Galois scaffolds. We specialize this construction to produce $G$-extensions $L/K$ such that the ring of integers $O_L$ is free of rank 1 over its associated order $A_0$, and extensions such that $A_0$ is a Hopf order in the group ring $K[G]$.

Abstract:In this paper, we prove, under a technical assumption, that any semi-direct product of a $p$-group $G$ with a group $\Phi$ of order prime to $p$ can appear as the Galois group of a tower of extensions $H/K/F$ with the property that $H$ is the maximal pro-$p$ extension of $K$ that is unramified everywhere, and $\operatorname{Gal}(H/K) = G$. A consequence of this result is that any local ring admitting a surjection to $\mathbb{Z}_5$ or $\mathbb{Z}_7$ with finite kernel can occur as a universal everywhere unramified deformation ring.

Abstract:We study the growth of the Galois invariants of the $p$-Selmer group of an elliptic curve in a degree $p$ Galois extension. We show that this growth is determined by certain local cohomology groups and determine necessary and sufficient conditions for these groups to be trivial. Under certain hypotheses this allows us to give necessary and sufficient conditions for there to be growth in the full $p$-Selmer group in a degree $p$ Galois extension.

Abstract:Let $p$ be a prime. We prove that certain amalgamated free pro-$p$ products of Demushkin groups with pro-$p$-cyclic amalgam cannot give rise to a 1-cyclotomic oriented pro-$p$ group, and thus do not occur as maximal pro-$p$ Galois groups of fields containing a root of 1 of order $p$. We show that other cohomological obstructions which are used to detect pro-$p$ groups that are not maximal pro-$p$ Galois groups - the quadraticity of $\mathbb{Z}/p\mathbb{Z}$-cohomology and the vanishing of Massey products - fail with the above pro-$p$ groups. Finally, we prove that the Minač-Tân pro-$p$ group cannot give rise to a 1-cyclotomic oriented pro-$p$ group, and we conjecture that every 1-cyclotomic oriented pro-$p$ group satisfy the strong $n$-Massey vanishing property for $n>2$.

On $p$-groups with a maximal elementary abelian normal subgroup of rank $k$

Abstract:There are several results in the literature concerning $p$-groups $G$ with a maximal elementary abelian normal subgroup of rank $k$ due to Thompson, Mann and others. Following an idea of Sambale we obtain bounds for the number of generators etc. of a $2$-group $G$ in terms of $k$, which were previously known only for $p>2$. We also prove a theorem that is new even for odd primes. Namely, we show that if $G$ has a maximal elementary abelian normal subgroup of rank $k$, then for any abelian subgroup $A$ the Frattini subgroup $\Phi(A)$ can be generated by $2k$ elements ($3k$ when $p=2$). The proof of this rests upon the following result of independent interest: If $V$ is an $n$-dimensional vector space, then any commutative subalgebra of End$(V)$ contains a zero algebra of codimension at most $n$.

Abstract:Let $p$ be a prime. We characterize the oriented right-angled Artin pro-$p$ groups whose $\mathbb{F}_p$-cohomology algebra yields no essential $n$-fold Massey products for every $n>2$, in terms of the associated digraph. Moreover, we show that the $\mathbb{F}_p$-cohomology algebra of such oriented right-angled Artin pro-$p$ groups is isomorphic to the exterior Stanley-Reisner $\mathbb{F}_p$-algebra associated to the same digraph. This work also aims at providing a concrete and group-theoretic introduction to the study of Massey products in Galois cohomology for non-specialists, especially graduate students working in profinite group theory.

Abstract:For a prime p, we study the Galois groups of maximal pro-$p$ extensions of imaginary quadratic fields unramified outside a finite set $S$, where $S$ consists of one or two finite places not lying above $p$. When $p$ is odd, we give explicit presentations of these Galois groups under certain conditions. As an application, we determine the structure of the maximal pro-$3$ extension of $\mathbb{Q}(i)$ unramified outside two specific finite places.

Mod-$p$ Galois representations not arising from abelian varieties

Abstract:It is known that any Galois representation $\rho : G_{\mathbb{Q}} \rightarrow \mathrm{GL}(2,\mathbb{F}_p)$ with determinant equal to the mod-$p$ cyclotomic character, arises from the $p$-torsion of an elliptic curve over $\mathbb{Q}$, if and only if $p \leq 5$. In dimension $g = 2$, when $p \le 3$, it is again known that any Galois representation valued in $\mathrm{GSp}(4,\mathbb{F}_p)$ with cyclotomic similitude character arises from an abelian surface. In this paper, we study this question for all primes $p$ and dimensions $g \ge 2$. When $g \ge 2$ and $(g,p) \neq (2,2)$, $(2,3)$, $(3,2)$, we prove the existence of a Galois representation over $\mathbb{Q}$ valued in $\mathrm{GSp}(2g,\mathbb{F}_p)$ with cyclotomic similitude character, that cannot arise as the $p$-torsion representation of any $g$-dimensional abelian variety over $\mathbb{Q}$.

Abstract:In this ongoing work, we extend to a class of well-behaved pre-special hyperfields the work of J. Miná\v c and Spira (\cite{minac1996witt}) that describes a (pro-2)-group of a field extension that encodes the quadratic form theory of a given field $F$: in \cite{adem1999cohomology} it is shown that its associated cohomology ring contains a copy of the cohomology ring of the field $F$. Our construction, a contravariant functor into the category of "pointed" pro-2-groups, is essentially given by generators and relations of profinite-2-groups. We prove that such profinite groups $\mbox{Gal}(F)$ encode the space of orders of the special group canonically associated to the hyperfield $F$ and provide a criterion to detect when $F$ is formally real or not.

Abstract:Let $p$ be an odd prime. We construct a $p$-group $P$ of nilpotency class two, rank seven and exponent $p$, such that $\mathrm{Aut}(P)$ induces $N_{\mathrm{GL}(7,p)}(G_2(p)) = Z(\mathrm{GL}(7,p)) G_2(p)$ on the Frattini quotient $P/\Phi(P)$. The constructed group $P$ is the smallest $p$-group with these properties, having order $p^{14}$, and when $p = 3$, our construction gives two nonisomorphic $p$-groups. To show that $P$ satisfies the specified properties, we study the action of $G_2(q)$ on the octonion algebra over $\mathbb{F}_q$, for each power $q$ of $p$, and explore the reducibility of the exterior square of each irreducible seven-dimensional $\mathbb{F}_q[G_2(q)]$-module.

Abstract:If $p$ is an odd prime, then we prove that $\e(H_2(G,\mathbb{Z})) \mid p\ \e(G)$ for $p$ groups of class 7. We prove the same for $p$ groups of class at most $p+1$ with $\e(Z(G))=p$. We also prove Schurs conjecture if $\e(G/Z(G))$ is $2,3$ or $6$. Furthermore we prove that if $G$ is a solvable group of derived length $d$ and $\e(G)=p$, then $\e(H_2(G,\mathbb{Z})) \mid (\e(G))^{d-1}$. We also show that if $G$ is a finite $2$ or $3$ generator group of exponent 5, then $\e(H_2(G,\mathbb{Z})) \mid (\e(G))^2$.

Abstract:For $p$ a prime, $G$ a finite group and $A$ a normal subset of elements of order $p$, we prove that if $A^2 = \{ab \mid a, b \in A\}$ consists of $p$-elements then $Q = \langle A \rangle$ is soluble. Further, if $O_p(G) = 1$, we show that $p$ is odd, $F(Q)$ is a non-trivial $p'$-group and $Q/F(Q)$ is an elementary abelian $p$-group. We also provide examples which show this conclusion is best possible.

Abstract:A problem of current interest, also motivated by applications to Coding theory, is to find explicit equations for \textit{maximal} curves, that are projective, geometrically irreducible, non-singular curves defined over a finite field $\mathbb{F}_{q^2}$ whose number of $\mathbb{F}_{q^2}$-rational points attains the Hasse-Weil upper bound of $q^2+2\mathfrak{g}q+1$ where $\mathfrak{g}$ is the genus of the curve $\mathcal{X}$. For curves which are Galois covered of the Hermitian curve, this has been done so far ad hoc, in particular in the cases where the Galois group has prime order and also when has order the square of the characteristic. In this paper we obtain explicit equations of all Galois covers of the Hermitian curve with Galois group of order $dp$ where $p$ is the characteristic of $\mathbb{F}_{q^2}$ and $d$ is prime other than $p$. We also compute the generators of the Weierstrass semigroup at a special $\mathbb{F}_{q^2}$-rational point of some of the curves, and discuss some possible positive impacts on the minimum distance problems of AG-codes.

Abstract:Let $G$ be a finite group and let $H$ be a subgroup of $G$. We say that $H$ is extremely closed in $G$ if $\langle H,H^g\rangle\cap N_G(H)=H$ for all $g\in G.$ In this paper, we determine the structure of finite groups with an extremely closed abelian $p$-subgroup for some prime $p$. In particular, we show that if $G$ contains such a subgroup $H$, then $G=N_G(H)O_{p'}(G).$ This is a variant on the celebrated Glauberman's $Z^*$-Theorem.

Abstract:In this article, we shall generalize a theorem due to Frobenius in group theory, which asserts that if $p$ is a prime and $p^{r}$ divides the order of a finite group, then the number of subgroups of order $p^{r}$ is $\equiv$ 1(mod $p$). Interestingly, our proof is purely combinatorial and does not use much group theory.
