Abstract:Brownian motion is the only random process which is Gaussian, stationary and Markovian. Dropping the Markovian property, i.e. allowing for memory, one obtains a class of processes called fractional Brownian motion, indexed by the Hurst exponent $H$. For $H=1/2$, Brownian motion is recovered. We develop a perturbative approach to treat the non-locality in time in an expansion in $\varepsilon = H-1/2$. This allows us to derive analytic results beyond scaling exponents for various observables related to extreme value statistics: The maximum $m$ of the process and the time $t_{\text{max}}$ at which this maximum is reached, as well as their joint distribution. We test our analytical predictions with extensive numerical simulations for different values of $H$. They show excellent agreement, even for $H$ far from $1/2$.

Abstract:Fractional and bifractional Brownian motions can be defined on a metric space if the associated metric or distance function is conditionally negative definite (or of negative type). This paper introduces several forms of scalar or vector bifractional Brownian motions on various metric spaces and presents their properties. A metric space of particular interest is the arccos-quasi-quadratic metric space over a subset of ℝ^d+1 such as an ellipsoidal surface, an ellipsoid, or a simplex, whose metric is the composition of arccosine and quasi-quadratic functions. Such a metric is not only conditionally negative definite but also a measure definite kernel, and the metric space incorporates several important cases in a unified framework so that it enables us to study (bi, tri, quadri)fractional Brownian motions on various metric spaces in a unified manner. The vector fractional Brownian motion on the arccos-quasi-quadratic metric space enjoys an infinite series expansion in terms of spherical harmonics, and its covariance matrix function admits an ultraspherical polynomial expansion. We establish the property of strong local nondeterminism of fractional and bi(tri, quadri)fractional Brownian motions on the arccos-quasi-quadratic metric space.

Abstract:Let $B=\{ B_{t}\} _{t\ge 0}$ be a one-dimensional standard Brownian motion. As an application of a recent result of ours on exponential functionals of Brownian motion, we show in this paper that, for every fixed $t>0$, the process given by \begin{align*} B_{s}-B_{t}-\Bigl| B_{t}+\max _{0\le u\le s}B_{u}-\max _{s\le u\le t}B_{u} \Bigr| +\Bigl| \max _{0\le u\le s}B_{u}-\max _{s\le u\le t}B_{u} \Bigr| ,\quad 0\le s\le t, \end{align*} is a Brownian motion. The path transformation that describes the above process is proven to be an involution, commute with time reversal, and preserve Pitman's transformation. A connection with Pitman's $2M-X$ theorem is also discussed.

Abstract:Starting with a discussion about the relationship between the fractional Brownian motion and the bifractional Brownian motion on the real line, we find that a fractional Brownian motion can be decomposed as an independent sum of a bifractional Brownian motion and a trifractional Brownian motion that is defined in the paper. More generally, this type of orthogonal decomposition holds for a large class of Gaussian or elliptically contoured random functions whose covariance functions are Schoenberg-Levy kernels on a temporal, spatial, or spatio-temporal domain. Also, many self-similar, nonstationary (Gaussian, elliptically contoured) random functions are formulated, and properties of the trifractional Brownian motion are studied. In particular, a bifractional Brownian motion in R-d is shown to be a quasi-helix in the sense of Kahane.

Abstract:We study a stochastic control system involving both a standard and a fractional Brownian motion with Hurst parameter less than 1/2. We apply an anticipative Girsanov transformation to transform the system into another one, driven only by the standard Brownian motion with coefficients depending on both the fractional Brownian motion and the standard Brownian motion. We derive a maximum principle and the associated stochastic variational inequality, which both are generalizations of the classical case.

Abstract:We consider a dynamical system describing the motion of a test-particle surrounded by $N$ Brownian particles with different masses. Physical principles of conservation of momentum and energy are met. We prove that, in the limit $N\to\infty$, the test-particle diffuses in time according to a quite general (non-Markovian) Gaussian process whose covariance function is determined by the distribution of the masses of the surround-particles. In particular, with proper choices of the distribution of the masses of the surround-particles, we obtain fractional Brownian motion, a mixture of independent fractional Brownian motions with different Hurst parameters and the classical Wiener process. Moreover, we present some distributions of masses of the surround-particles leading to limiting processes which perform transition from ballistic to superdiffusion or from ballistic to classical diffusion. Abstract:Let $B^{H, K}= \big\{B^{H, K}(t), t \in \R_+ \big\}$ be a bifractional Brownian motion in $\R^d$. We prove that $B^{H, K}$ is strongly locally nondeterministic. Applying this property and a stochastic integral representation of $B^{H, K}$, we establish Chung's law of the iterated logarithm for $B^{H, K}$, as well as sharp Hölder conditions and tail probability estimates for the local times of $B^{H, K}$. Abstract:We show a strong maximum principle and an Alexandrov-Bakelman-Pucci estimate for the weak solutions of a Cauchy problem featuring Caputo time-derivatives and non-local operators in space variables given in terms of Bernstein functions of the Laplacian. To achieve this, first we propose a suitable meaning of a weak solution, show their existence and uniqueness, and establish a probabilistic representation in terms of time-changed Brownian motion. As an application, we also discuss an inverse source problem.

Abstract:In this article some of the important ideas in ordinary stochastic analysis are applied to fractional Brownian motions (fBm's). First we give a simple and elementary proof of the fact that any fBm has zero quadratic variation. This fact leads to the non-semimartingale structure of fBm's. Another consequence is that we can integrate (in probability) the functionals of fBm's with fBm differentials. With the same integrator, we then develop the L2 integration theory of bounded sure processes based on of K. Bichteler's integral extension theory. Stochastic Processes and their Applications

Abstract:In this article we introduce cylindrical fractional Brownian motions in Banach spaces and develop the related stochastic integration theory. Here a cylindrical fractional Brownian motion is understood in the classical framework of cylindrical random variables and cylindrical measures. The developed stochastic integral for deterministic operator valued integrands is based on a series representation of the cylindrical fractional Brownian motion, which is analogous to the Karhunen–Loève expansion for genuine stochastic processes. In the last part we apply our results to study the abstract stochastic Cauchy problem in a Banach space driven by cylindrical fractional Brownian motion.

Abstract:Fractional Brownian motion is a self-affine, non-Markovian and translationally invariant generalization of Brownian motion, depending on the Hurst exponent $H$. Here we investigate fractional Brownian motion where both the starting and the end point are zero, commonly referred to as bridge processes. Observables are the time $t_+$ the process is positive, the maximum $m$ it achieves, and the time $t_{\rm max}$ when this maximum is taken. Using a perturbative expansion around Brownian motion ($H=\frac12$), we give the first-order result for the probability distribution of these three variables, and the joint distribution of $m$ and $t_{\rm max}$. Our analytical results are tested, and found in excellent agreement, with extensive numerical simulations, both for $H>\frac12$ and $H<\frac12$. This precision is achieved by sampling processes with a free endpoint, and then converting each realization to a bridge process, in generalization to what is usually done for Brownian motion.

Abstract:We show that the derivative of the intersection and self-intersection local times of alpha-stable processes are exponentially integrable for certain parameter values. This includes the Brownian motion case. We also discuss related results present in the literature for fractional Brownian motion, and in particular give a counter-example to a result in [Guo, J., Hu, Y., and Xiao, Y., Higher-order derivative of intersection local time for two independent fractional Brownian motions, Journal of Theoretical Probability 32, (2019), pp. 1190-1201] related to this question.
