Abstract:A classical theorem by Jacobson says that a ring in which every element $x$ satisfies the equation $x^n=x$ for some $n>1$ is commutative. According to Birkhoff's Completeness Theorem, if $n$ is fixed, there must be an equational proof of this theorem. But equational proofs have only appeared for some values of $n$ so far. This paper is about finding such a proof in general. We are able to make a reduction to the case that $n$ is a prime power $p^k$ and the ring has characteristic $p$. We then prove the special cases $k=1$ and $k=2$. The general case is reduced to a series of constructive Wedderburn Theorems, which we can prove in many special cases. Several examples of equational proofs are discussed in detail.

Projective Nullstellensatz for not necessarily algebraically closed fields

Abstract:The Nullstellensatz, proved by Hilbert in 1893, is a classical result that holds when the base field is algebraically closed. When the base field is finite, a version of Hilbert's Nullstellensatz is given by Terjanian in 1966. Laksov in 1987 generalized Hilbert's Nullstellensatz to a $K$-Nullstellensatz when the base field $K$ is not necessarily algebraically closed. However, unlike Tarjanian's Nullstellensatz, Laksov's Nullstellensatz is not very explicit. Later, Laksov and Westin in 1990 proposed a strengthening to Laksov's Nullstellensatz in the form of four conjectures. A projective analogue of Nullstellensatz of the classical Nullstellensatz of Hilbert is well-known for projective varieties over algebraically closed fields. For finite fields, the projective analogue of the Nullstellensatz can be derived as an application of Hilbert's Nullstellensatz, though it is not as efficient as Terjanian's Nullstellensatz. Gimenez, Ruano and San-José in 2023 strengthened this result by identifying a computationally efficient set. Here, we introduce an even more efficient set that establishes the projective analogue of the Nullstellensatz for finite fields. Additionally, we provide counterexamples to three of the conjectures of Laksov and Westin.

Abstract:Let {\mathcal B} be a linear space of matrices over a field {\mathbb spanned by n\times n matrices B_1, \dots, B_m. The non-commutative rank of {\mathcal B}$ is the minimum r\in {\mathbb N} such that there exists U\leq {\mathbb F}^n satisfying \dim(U)-\dim( {\mathcal B} (U))\geq n-r, where {\mathcal B}(U):={\mathrm span}(\cup_{i\in[m]} B_i(U)). Computing the non-commutative rank generalizes some well-known problems including the bipartite graph maximum matching problem and the linear matroid intersection problem. In this paper we give a deterministic polynomial-time algorithm to compute the non-commutative rank over any field {\mathbb F}. Prior to our work, such an algorithm was only known over the rational number field {\mathbb Q}, a result due to Garg et al, [GGOW]. Our algorithm is constructive and produces a witness certifying the non-commutative rank, a feature that is missing in the algorithm from [GGOW]. Our result is built on techniques which we developed in a previous paper [IQS1], with a new reduction procedure that helps to keep the blow-up parameter small. There are two ways to realize this reduction. The first involves constructivizing a key result of Derksen and Makam [DM2] which they developed in order to prove that the null cone of matrix semi-invariants is cut out by generators whose degree is polynomial in the size of the matrices involved. We also give a second, simpler method to achieve this. This gives another proof of the polynomial upper bound on the degree of the generators cutting out the null cone of matrix semi-invariants. Both the invariant-theoretic result and the algorithmic result rely crucially on the regularity lemma proved in [IQS1]. In this paper we improve on the constructive version of the regularity lemma from [IQS1] by removing a technical coprime condition that was assumed there.

Abstract:A variant of the Archimedean Positivstellensatz is proved which is based on Archimedean semirings or quadratic modules of generating subalgebras. It allows one to obtain representations of strictly positive polynomials on compact semi-algebraic by means of smaller sets of squares or polynomials. A large number of examples is developed in detail.

Abstract:In this article, we first prove a key result which asserts that every nonzero idempotent element of a $G$-graded commutative ring with $G$ a torsion-free Abelian group is homogeneous of degree zero. This important special case leads us to derive a general result which asserts that every idempotent element of a $G$-graded commutative ring $R=\bigoplus\limits_{n\in G}R_{n}$ with $G$ an Abelian group is contained in the subring $\bigoplus\limits_{h\in H}R_{h}$ where $H$ is the torsion subgroup of $G$. This theorem gives an affirmative answer to the generalized version of Kaplansky's idempotent conjecture in the commutative case. Our result also ...

Abstract:We study the structure of an idempotent matrix $F$ over a commutative ring. We make explicit the fundamental system of orthogonal idempotents, hidden in this matrix, for each of which the matrix has a well-defined rank. Similarly we find a finite number of comaximal elements of the ring which make explicit the fact that the codomain of $F$ is locally free. Our proofs are based on the abstract local-global principle. We give two methods to recover a constructive proof of these results. The most interesting one is a constructive interpretation of a very simple version of the abstract local-global principle. We think we have made a significant step towards a constructive version of the "Hilbert programme" for abstract algebra, i.e. the automatic translation of proofs of abstract algebra into constructive proofs.

Abstract:In this paper, using some conditions that arise naturally in Alon's combinatorial Nullstellensatz as well as its various extensions and generalizations, we characterize Gröbner bases consisting of monic polynomials, which helps us to establish a Nullstellensatz from a Gröbner basis perspective. As corollaries of this general Nullstellensatz, we establish four special Nullstellensatz, which, among others, include a common generalization of the Nullstellensatz for multisets established in Kós, Rónyai and Mészáros \cite{23,24} and the Nullstellensatz with multiplicity established in Ball and Serra \cite{9}, and include a punctured Nullstellensatz, generalizing several existing results in the literature. As applications of our punctured Nullstellensatz, we extend some results on hyperplane covering in \cite{9,23,24} to wider settings, and give an alternative proof of the generalized Alon-Füredi theorem established in Bishnoi, Clark, Potukuchi and Schmitt \cite{12}. Unless specified otherwise, all our results are established over an arbitrary commutative ring $R$.

Abstract:In this paper, we prove the conjecture posed by Keller and Rosemarin at Eurocrypt 2021 on the nullity of a matrix polynomial of a block matrix with Hadamard type blocks over commutative rings of characteristic 2. Therefore, it confirms the conjectural optimal bound on the dimension of invariant subspace of the Starkad cipher using the HADES design strategy. Moreover, we reveal the algebraic structure formed by Hadamard matrices over commutative rings from the perspectives of group algebra and polynomial algebra. An interesting relation between block-Hadamard matrices and Hadamard-block matrices is obtained as well.

Abstract:Let R be a ring and let J(R) be the Jacobson radical of R. We discuss the problem of determining when the central idempotents in R/J(R) can be lifted to R. If R is a noetherian (artinian) ring, we give some conditions relative to the ranks of K-0 groups under which the central idempotents in R/J(R) can be lifted. In particular, when R is semilocal, these conditions are necessary and sufficient. Moreover, we consider ranks of K-0 groups of pullbacks of rings and obtain the upper and lower bounds on them under some suitable conditions.

Dimension-free matricial Nullstellensätze for noncommutative polynomials

Abstract:Hilbert's Nullstellensatz is one of the most fundamental correspondences between algebra and geometry, and has inspired a plethora of noncommutative analogs. In last two decades, there has been an increased interest in understanding vanishing sets of polynomials in several matrix variables without restricting the matrix size, prompted by developments in noncommutative function theory, control systems, operator algebras, and quantum information theory. The emerging results vary according to the interpretation of what vanishing means. For example, given a collection of noncommutative polynomials, one can consider all matrix tuples at which the values of these polynomials are all zero, singular, have common kernel, or have zero trace. This survey reviews Nullstellensätze for the above types of vanishing sets, and identifies their structural counterparts in the free algebra.

Abstract:This paper expands upon the work by Downey et al.(2007),who proved that there are computable commutative rings with identity where the nilradical is ∑01-complete,and the Jacobson radical is Π02-complete,respectively.We simplify the proof,showing that there is a computable commutative ring with identity where the nilradical is ∑01-complete and meanwhile the Jacobson radical is Π02-complete.Moreover,we show that for any c.e.set A there exists a computable commutative ring with identity where the nilradical is Turing equivalent to A,and for any Π02 set B there exists a computable commutative ring with identity where the Jacobson radical is Turing equivalent to B.

Abstract:We answer a question by Shestakov on the Jacobson radical in differential polynomial rings. We show that if R is a locally nilpotent ring with a derivation D then R[X;D] need not be Jacobson radical. We also show that J(R[X;D])\cap R is a nil ideal of R in the case where D is a locally nilpotent derivation and R is an algebra over an uncountable field.

Abstract:For a smooth projective curve defined over an algebraic number field k , we investigate the finiteness of the set of generalized Jacobians of associated with modules defined over such that a fixed divisor representing a class of finite order in the Jacobian J of provides the torsion class in the generalized Jacobian . Various results on the finiteness and infiniteness of the set of generalized Jacobians with the above property are obtained depending on the geometric conditions on the support of , as well as on the conditions on the field k . These results are applied to the problem of the periodicity of a continued fraction expansion constructed in the field of formal power series for special elements of the field of functions of the hyperelliptic curve .

A Jacobian criterion for nonsingularity in mixed characteristic

Abstract:We give a version of the usual Jacobian characterization of the defining ideal of the singular locus in the equal characteristic case: the new theorem is valid for essentially affine algebras over a complete local algebra over a mixed characteristic discrete valuation ring. The result makes use of the minors of a matrix that includes a row coming from the values of a $p$-derivation. To study the analogue of modules of differentials associated with the mixed Jacobian matrices that arise in our context, we introduce and investigate the notion of a perivation, which may be thought of, roughly, as a linearization of the notion of $p$-derivation. We also develop a mixed characteristic analogue of the positive characteristic $\Gamma$-construction, and apply this to give additional nonsingularity criteria.

Abstract:In this paper we prove a conjecture of Kudla and Rallis. Let $\chi$ be a unitary character, $s\in \mathbb{C}$ and $W$ a symplectic vector space over a non-archimedean field with symmetry group $G(W)$. Denote by $I(\chi,s)$ the degenerate principal series representation of $G(W\oplus W)$. Pulling back $I(\chi,s)$ along the natural embedding $G(W)\times G(W)\hookrightarrow G(W\oplus W)$ gives a representation $I_{W,W}(\chi,s)$ of $G(W)\times G(W)$. Let $\pi$ be an irreducible smooth complex representation of $G(W)$. We then prove \[\dim _\mathbb{C}\mathrm{Hom}_{G(W)\times G(W)}(I_{W,W}(\chi,s),\pi\otimes \pi^\lor)=1.\] We also give analogous statements for $W$ orthogonal or unitary. This gives in particular a new proof of the conservation relation of the local Theta correspondence for symplectic-orthogonal and unitary dual pairs.

Abstract:An element in a ring R is called CJ if it is of the form c+j , where c belongs to the center and j is an element from the Jacobson radical. A ring R is called CJ if each element of R is CJ. We establish the basic properties of CJ rings, give several characterizations of these rings, and connect this notion with many standard elementwise properties such as clean, uniquely clean, nil clean, CN, and CU. We study the behavior of this notion under various ring extensions. In particular, we show that the subring C + J is always a CJ ring and that if R [ x ] is a CJ ring then R satisfies the Köthe conjecture.
