Abstract:This article is a short review on the relationship between convergent matrix integrals, formal matrix integrals, and combinatorics of maps. We briefly summarize results developed over the last 30 years, as well as more recent discoveries. We recall that formal matrix integrals are identical to combinatorial generating functions for maps, and that formal matrix integrals are in general very different from convergent matrix integrals. Finally, we give a list of the classical matrix models which have played an important role in physics in the past decades. Some of them are now well understood, some are still difficult challenges.

Abstract:The goal of this monograph is to give an accessible introduction to nonstandard methods and their applications, with an emphasis on combinatorics and Ramsey theory. It includes both new nonstandard proofs of classical results and recent developments initially obtained in the nonstandard setting. This makes it the first combinatorics-focused account of nonstandard methods to be aimed at a general (graduate-level) mathematical audience. This book will provide a natural starting point for researchers interested in approaching the rapidly growing literature on combinatorial results obtained via nonstandard methods. The primary audience consists of graduate students and specialists in logic and combinatorics who wish to pursue research at the interface between these areas.

Abstract:We introduce iterated graph systems which yield fractal spaces through a projective sequence of self-similar graphs. Our construction yields new examples of self-similar fractals, such as the pentagonal Sierpiński carpet and a pillow-space, and it yields a new framework to study potential theory on many standard examples in the literature, including generalized Sierpiński carpets. We demonstrate that a fractal arising from an iterated graph system satisfying mild geometric conditions and having enough reflection symmetries, satisfies the combinatorial Loewner property (CLP) of Bourdon and Kleiner. For certain exponents, one can also obtain the conductive homogeneity condition of Kigami. This shows, in a precise sense, that self-similarity and sufficient symmetry yields CLP. Furthermore, we show that our examples satisfy important asymptotic behaviors of discrete moduli. In particular, we establish the so-called super-multiplicative inequality for our examples - which when $p=2$ plays a crucial role in the study of Dirichlet forms and random walks on fractals. This implies the super-multiplicativity bound also for many fractals for which it was not known before, such as the Menger sponge. A particular feature here is using replacement flows and the notion of a flow basis. This yields a simpler way to establish many known estimates, and allows us to prove several new ones. Further, super-multiplicativity shows that one can effectively estimate the conformal dimensions numerically for many self-similar fractals.

Abstract:This paper is a sequel of Imamura (2019) (<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1711.01609" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1711.01609">arXiv:1711.01609</a>) where we set up a framework of nonstandard large-scale topology. In the present paper, we apply our framework to various topics in large-scale topology: spaces having with both small-scale and large-scale structures, large-scale structures on nonstandard extensions, size properties of subsets of coarse spaces, and coarse hyperspaces.

Iteration theory of noncommutative maps

Abstract:This note aims to study the iteration theory of noncommutative self-maps of bounded matrix convex domains. We prove a version of the Denjoy-Wolff theorem for the row ball and the maximal quantization of the unit ball of $\mathbb{C}^d$. For more general bounded matrix convex sets, we prove a version of Wolff's theorem inspired by the results of Abate. Lastly, we use iteration and fixed point theory to generalize the commutative results of Davidson, Ramsey, and Shalit to quotients of the free semigroup algebra by WOT closed ideals.

Eigenvalue distributions from a star product approach

Abstract:We use the well-known isomorphism between operator algebras and function spaces equipped with a star product to study the asymptotic properties of certain matrix sequences in which the matrix dimension $D$ tends to infinity. Our approach is based on the $su(2)$ coherent states which allow for a systematic 1/D expansion of the star product. This produces a trace formula for functions of the matrix sequence elements in the large-$D$ limit which includes higher order (finite-$D$) corrections. From this a variety of analytic results pertaining to the asymptotic properties of the density of states, eigenstates and expectation values associated with the matrix sequence follows. It is shown how new and existing results in the settings of collective spin systems and orthogonal polynomial sequences can be readily obtained as special cases. In particular, this approach allows for the calculation of higher order corrections to the zero distributions of a large class of orthogonal polynomials.

Abstract:We describe Gauss-type maps as geometric realizations of certain codes in the monoid of nonnegative matrices in the extended modular group. Each such code, together with an appropriate choice of unimodular intervals in , determines a dual pair of graph-directed iterated function systems, whose attractors contain intervals and constitute the domains of a dual pair of Gauss-type maps. Our framework covers many continued fraction algorithms (such as Farey fractions, Ceiling, Even and Odd, Nearest Integer, ) and provides explicit dual algorithms and characterizations of those quadratic irrationals having a purely periodic expansion.

Abstract:Picard iteration is on the basis of a great number of numerical methods and applications of mathematics. However, it has been known since the 1950s that this method of fixed-point approximation may not converge in the case of nonexpansive mappings. In this paper, an extension of the concept of nonexpansiveness is presented in the first place. Unlike the classical case, the new maps may be discontinuous, adding an element of generality to the model. Some properties of the set of fixed points of the new maps are studied. Afterwards, two iterative methods of fixed-point approximation are analyzed, in the frameworks of b-metric and Hilbert spaces. In the latter case, it is proved that the symmetrically averaged iterative procedures perform well in the sense of convergence with the least number of operations at each step. As an application, the second part of the article is devoted to the study of fractal mappings on Hilbert spaces defined by means of nonexpansive operators. The paper considers fractal mappings coming from φ-contractions as well. In particular, the new operators are useful for the definition of an extension of the concept of α-fractal function, enlarging its scope to more abstract spaces and procedures. The fractal maps studied here have quasi-symmetry, in the sense that their graphs are composed of transformed copies of itself.

Global Convergence of Algorithms Based on Unions of Nonexpansive Maps

Abstract:In his recent research M. K. Tam (2018) considered a framework for the analysis of iterative algorithms which can be described in terms of a structured set-valued operator. At each point in the ambient space, the value of the operator can be expressed as a finite union of values of single-valued paracontracting operators. He showed that the associated fixed point iteration is locally convergent around strong fixed points. This result generalizes a theorem due to Bauschke and Noll (2014). In the present paper we generalize the result of Tam and show the global convergence of his algorithm for an arbitrary starting point. An analogous result is also proved for the Krasnosel'ski-Mann iterations.

Topology and its Applications

Abstract:We continue to explore the ways in which high-level topological connections arise from connections between fundamental features of the spaces, in this case focusing on star-selection principles in Pixley-Roy hyperspaces and uniform spaces. First, we find a way to write star-selection principles as ordinary selection principles, allowing us to apply our translation theorems to star-selection games. For Pixley-Roy hyperspaces, we are able to extend work of M. Sakai and connect the star-Menger/Rothberger games on the hyperspace to the ω -Menger/Rothberger games on the ground space. Along the way, we uncover connections between cardinal invariants. For uniform spaces, we show that the star-Menger/Rothberger game played with uniform covers is equivalent to the Menger/Rothberger game played with uniform covers, reinforcing an observation of Lj. Kočinac.

Foundations of matroids -- Part 2: Further theory, examples, and computational methods

Abstract:In this sequel to "Foundations of matroids - Part 1", we establish several presentations of the foundation of a matroid in terms of small building blocks. For example, we show that the foundation of a matroid M is the colimit of the foundations of all embedded minors of M isomorphic to one of the matroids $U^2_4$, $U^2_5$, $U^3_5$, $C_5$, $C_5^\ast$, $U^2_4\oplus U^1_2$, $F_7$, $F_7^\ast$, and we show that this list is minimal. We establish similar minimal lists of building blocks for the classes of 2-connected and 3-connected matroids. We also establish a presentation for the foundation of a matroid in terms of its lattice of flats. Each of these presentations provides a useful method to compute the foundation of certain matroids, as we illustrate with a number of concrete examples. Combining these techniques with other results in the literature, we are able to compute the foundations of several interesting classes of matroids, including whirls, rank-2 uniform matroids, and projective geometries. In an appendix, we catalogue various 'small' pastures which occur as foundations of matroids, most of which were found with the assistance of a computer, and we discuss some of their interesting properties.

Here we discuss different approaches found in the literature so far. The recent developments of finding convergence conditions are then outlined in three basic examples: the Weyl star product for constant Poisson structures, the Gutt star product for linear Poisson structures, and the Wick type star product on the Poincar\'e disc.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate what selection principles properties are possessed by small (with respect to the bounding and dominating numbers) unions of spaces with certain (star) selection principles.. Furthermore, we give several results about iterations of these properties and weaker properties than paracompactness. In addition, we study the behaviour of these iterated properties on $\Psi$-spaces. A unifying theory for metrical results on regular continued fraction convergents and mediants

Abstract:We revisit Ito's (\cite{I1989}) natural extension of the Farey tent map, which generates all regular continued fraction convergents and mediants of a given irrational. With a slight shift in perspective on the order in which these convergents and mediants arise, this natural extension is shown to provide an elegant and powerful tool in the metric theory of continued fractions. A wealth of old and new results -- including limiting distributions of approximation coefficients, analogues of a theorem of Legendre and their refinements, and a generalisation of Lévy's Theorem to subsequences of convergents and mediants -- are presented as corollaries within this unifying theory.

Abstract:Given a finite subset $F$ of integer points in $\mathbb Z^d$, it is of interest to seek conditions on $F$ that allow it to multi-tile $\mathbb Z^d$ by translations. To this end, we give a discretized version of the Bombieri-Siegel formula, which represents a finite sum of discrete covariograms in terms of Fourier transforms. As a consequence, we arrive at a new equivalent condition for multi-tiling $\mathbb Z^d$ by translating $F$ with a fixed integer sublattice. In the continuous case, we study lattice sums of the cross covariogram for any two bounded sets $A, B\subset \mathbb R^d$, and we prove a refined continuous version of the classical Bombieri-Siegel formula from the geometry of numbers. To achieve this goal, we use a variant of the Poisson Summation formula, adapted for continuous functions of compact support. As an application of this refined Bombieri-Siegel formula, a new characterization of multi-tilings of Euclidean space by translations of a compact set by using a lattice is given. One consequence is a novel spectral formula for the volume of any bounded measurable set. Another consequence is a novel spectral formula for the product of the volumes of any two bounded measurable sets.

Abstract:A classical theorem due to Mattila (see \cite{Mat84}; see also \cite{M95}, Chapter 13) says that if $A,B \subset {\Bbb R}^d$ of Hausdorff dimension $s_A, s_B$, respectively, with $s_A+s_B \ge d$, $s_B>\frac{d+1}{2}$ and $dim_{\mathcal H}(A \times B)=s_A+s_B\ge d$, then $$ dim_{\mathcal H}(A \cap (z+B)) \leq s_A+s_B-d$$ for almost every $z \in {\Bbb R}^d$, in the sense of Lebesgue measure. In this paper, we replace the Hausdorff dimension on the left hand side of the first inequality above by the upper Minkowski dimension, replace the Lebesgue measure of the set of translates by a Hausdorff measure on a set of sufficiently large dimension and replace the translation and rotation group by a more general variable coefficient family of transformations. Interesting arithmetic issues arise in the consideration of sharpness examples. These results are partly motivated by those in \cite{EIT11} and \cite{IJL10} where in the former the classical regular value theorem from differential geometry was investigated in a fractal setting and in the latter discrete incidence theory is explored from an analytic standpoint. Fourier Integral Operator bounds and other techniques of harmonic analysis play a crucial role in our investigation. We also consider, in the spirit of the Furstenberg conjecture, inverse problems for intersections by asking how small a dimension of a set can be given that the dimension of its intersections with a suitably well-curved family of manifolds is bounded from below by a given threshold. Finally, we shall discuss applications of our estimates to the problem of estimating the number of solutions of systems of diophantine equations over integers.
