Abstract:This note presents an approach to studying the iterates of a mapping whose restriction to the complement of a finite set is continuous and open. The main examples to which the approach can be applied are piecewise monotone mappings defined on an interval or a finite graph.

Abstract:Let $f$ be a piecewise continuous map on the interval with at most a finite number of turning points. In this paper we study some basic properties about this class of functions and show its main difference from the continuous case. We define and study the notion of closed structure, which can be seen as an extension of the notion of periodic orbit. Moreover, we also study the periodic orbits which are away from the discontinuities of $f$, extending the notion of trapped and free periodic orbits.

Abstract:It is easy to find some discontinuous functions whose iterates are continuous ones, showing that iteration can change discontinuity into continuity. In order to investigate this change and avoid complicated computation, in this paper we classify self-mappings on the compact interval [0, 1] each of which has only one discontinuous point. We give sufficient and necessary conditions under which the second order iterates are continuous functions.

Abstract:In the article a technique of the usage of $f$-continuous functions (on mappings) and their families is developed. A proof of the Urysohn's Lemma for mappings is presented and a variant of the Brouwer-Tietze-Urysohn Extension Theorem for mappings is proven. Characterizations of the normality properties of mappings are given and the notion of a perfect normality of a mapping is introduced. It seems to be the most optimal in this approach.

Abstract:Ioffe's criterion and various reformulations of it have become a~standard tool in proving theorems guaranteeing various regularity properties such as metric regularity, i.e., the openness with a linear rate around the reference point, of a~(set-valued) mapping. We derive an analogue of it guaranteeing the almost openness with a linear rate of mappings acting in incomplete spaces and having non-closed graphs, in general. The main tool used is an approximate version of Ekeland's variational principle for a function that is not necessarily lower semi-continuous and is defined on an abstract (possibly incomplete) space. Further, we focus on the stability of this property under additive single-valued and set-valued perturbations.

Abstract:There are more than 15 years since the transition-jump system (TJS) was installed. Because of the quad steering, which is caused by the beam not being well centered through all the gamma-T quads, the TJS has never been used in the operation. Based upon the recent calculation, the short 12 gamma-T quad had the worst offset in the vertical direction, and it was lowered 4 mm. Afterwards, the orbit error caused by the gamma-T quad steering has been largely removed, and this encourages our efforts of commissioning the TJS to reach its design goal.

Abstract:The semi-dynamical system of a continuous self-map is generated by iteration of the map, however, the iteration itself, being an operator on the space of continuous self-maps, may generate interesting dynamical behaviors. In this paper we prove that the iteration operator is continuous on the space of all continuous self-maps of a compact metric space and therefore induces a semi-dynamical system on the space. Furthermore, we characterize its fixed points and periodic points in the case that the compact metric space is a compact interval by discussing the Babbage equation. We prove that all orbits of the iteration operator are bounded but most fixed points are not stable. On the other hand, we prove that the iteration operator is not chaotic.

Abstract:This article briefly surveys some recent progress in the investigation of Halpern's iterative algorithm for approximating fixed points of nonexpansive mappings. An implicit iterative method is first discussed, followed by details on strong convergence of Halpern's iteration in various cases, covering averaged mappings, perturbation techniques, common fixed points for finite family of nonexpansive mappings, and the viscosity approximation method. Extensions of Halpern's iteration to nonexpansive semigroups and Hadamard manifolds are discussed. Applications to the split feasibility and the multiple-sets split feasibility problems, and accretive operators are also included.

Abstract:In this paper, a generalization of fixed-point mappings with an iterate at a point in complete metric spaces is shown, using the notions of T-closed sets and i-P-regularity/d-P-regularity, proving conditions for the existence and uniqueness of the fixed point. Examples are provided to illustrate the results and an application to coupled fixed points is shown.

Abstract:One of the strangest, most mind-boggling examples in analysis is that of a function from to that is everywhere differentiable but monotone on no interval. The graph of such a “monstrous” function is simultaneously smooth and very rugged. Although such examples have been known for over 100 years, so far the existing constructions are quite involved. In this note, we provide a simple example of such a map. It is presented in a broader context of other paradoxical examples related to differentiability of continuous maps from to , including a differentiable function that maps a compact perfect subset of onto itself even though its derivative vanishes on .

Topological Methods in Nonlinear Analysis

Abstract:This paper presents a general and systematic discussion of various symbolic representations of iterated maps through subshifts. We give a unified model for all continuous maps on a metric space, by representing a map through a general subshift over usually an uncountable alphabet. It is shown that at most the second order representation is enough for a continuous map. In particular, it is shown that the dynamics of one-dimensional continuous maps to a great extent can be transformed to the study of subshift structure of a general symbolic dynamics system. By introducing distillations, partial representations of some general continuous maps are obtained. Finally, partitions and representations of a class of discontinuous maps, piecewise continuous maps are discussed, and as examples, a representation of the Gauss map via a full shift over a countable alphabet and representations of interval exchange transformations as subshifts of infinite type are given.

Abstract:We study the functorial and growth properties of closed orbits for maps. By viewing an arbitrary sequence as the orbit-counting function for a map, iterates and Cartesian products of maps define new transformations between integer sequences. An orbit monoid is associated to any integer sequence, giving a dynamical interpretation of the Euler transform.

Abstract:We introduce a new generalized resolvent in a Banach space and discuss some of its properties. Using these properties, we obtain an iterative scheme for finding a point which is a fixed point of relatively weak nonexpansive mapping and a zero of monotone mapping. Furthermore, strong convergence of the scheme to a point which is a fixed point of relatively weak nonexpansive mapping and a zero of monotone mapping is proved.

Abstract:We consider continuous maps of the interval which preserve the Lebesgue measure. Except for the identity map or $1 - \id$ all such maps have topological entropy at least $\log2/2$ and generically they have infinite topological entropy. In this article we show that thegeneric map has zero measure-theoretic entropy. This implies that there are dramatic differences in the topological versus metric behavior both for injectivity as well as for the structure of thelevel sets of generic maps.

Abstract:A well-known result of Bill Parry shows that a topologically transitive continuous piecewise monotone mapping with positive topological entropy is conjugate to a uniformly piecewise linear mapping with slope determined by the entropy. In this note we generalise Parry's result somewhat to what we call the class of essentially transitive mappings. This generalisation is of some interest in as much as for mappings with one turning point the converse also holds, i.e., a uniformly piecewise linear mapping with one turning point and with slope greater than 1 is essentially transitive.
