Abstract:The realistic interpretation of classical theory assumes that every classical system has well-defined properties, which may be unknown to the observer but are nevertheless part of reality and can, in principle, be revealed by measurements. Here we show that this interpretation can, in principle, be falsified if classical systems coexist with other types of physical systems. To make this point, we construct a toy theory that (i) includes classical theory as a subtheory and (ii) allows classical systems to be entangled with another type of system, called anticlassical. We show that our toy theory allows for the violation of Bell inequalities in two-party scenarios where one of the settings corresponds to a local measurement performed on a classical system alone. Lett. 92, 130404 (2004)] that appears to be stronger and more general than the Bell-CHSH formulation is presented. It is shown that, contrary to expectations, this prescription fails to correctly identify a large family of maximally non-local Bell states.

Abstract:The purpose of this comment is to show that a reinterpretation of the results from the Letter: "Physics and Metaphysics of Wigner's Friends: Even performed pre-measurements have no results" allows for reaching the conclusion "pre-measurements have no resul" [<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2003.07464" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2003.07464">arXiv:2003.07464</a>] based only on postulates of quantum mechanics without additional assumptions on irreversibility. Additionally, with supplementary reasoning based on Bell's theorem, one can show that unitary decoherence cannot be solely responsible for the quantum-to-classical transition, and an additional irreversibility model is required for its full description. Consequently, the black hole information paradox has no physical basis.

Abstract:In the century-long history of quantum theory, Bell's theorem stands out among the most thought-provoking results of its foundations. It reveals a conflict between quantum theory's predictions and those allowed by a general framework aligning with locality and realism. Experimental vindications of the quantum predictions were of Nobel-Prize merit and contributed to an established conclusion that nature is non-local. In stark contrast with this orthodoxy, I show that within the Heisenberg picture of unitary quantum theory, Bell inequalities are violated with local elements of reality interacting locally. Here is how: Upon measuring her particle of the entangled pair, Alice smoothly and locally evolves into two non-interacting versions of herself, each of which witnesses and records a different outcome -- she \emph{foliates}. Everything that suitably interacts with the Alices foliates in turn, creating worlds which, for all practical purposes, are independent and autonomous. At spacelike separation, an analogous process occurs to Bob when he measures his particle, locally differentiating him and his surroundings into two non-interacting instances. To confirm the violation of Bell inequalities, Alice and Bob must further interact to produce a record of the joint outcomes. The record arises from the two local worlds of Alice, and those of Bob, and foliates into four instances that respectively indicate `$00$', `$01$', `$10$' and `$11$'. If at least one input of the CHSH test is `$0$', the total measure of records displaying the same outcome is $\cos^2(\pi/8)$; if not, this measure pertains to the records of different outcomes. This article formalizes and explains this local account of Bell `nonlocality'.

Abstract:It was recently argued by Catani et al that it is possible to reproduce the phenomenology of quantum interference classically, by the double-slit experiment with a deterministic, local, and classical model (Quantum 7, 1119 (2023)). The stated aim of their argument is to falsify the claim made by Feynman (in his third book of Lectures on Physics) that quantum interference is ``impossible, absolutely impossible, to explain in any classical way'' and that it ``contains the only mystery'' of quantum mechanics. We here want to point out some problems with their argument.

Abstract:A finite non-classical framework for qubit physics is described that challenges the conclusion that the Bell Inequality has been shown to have been violated experimentally, even approximately. This framework postulates the primacy of a fractal-like 'invariant set' geometry I U in cosmological state space, on which the universe evolves deterministically and causally, and from which space-time and the laws of physics in space-time are emergent. Consistent with the assumed primacy of I U , a non-Euclidean (and hence non-classical) metric g p is defined in cosmological state space. Here, p is a large but finite integer (whose inverse may reflect the weakness of gravity). Points that do not lie on I U are necessarily g p -distant from points that do. g p is related to the p-adic metric of number theory. Using number-theoretic properties of spherical triangles, the Clauser-Horne-Shimony-Holt (CHSH) inequality, whose violation would rule out local realism, is shown to be undefined in this framework. Moreover, the CHSH-like inequalities violated experimentally are shown to be g p -distant from the CHSH inequality. This result fails in the singular limit p = ∞ , at which g p is Euclidean and the corresponding model classical. Although Invariant Set Theory is deterministic and locally causal, it is not conspiratorial and does not compromise experimenter free will. The relationship between Invariant Set Theory, Bohmian Theory, The Cellular Automaton Interpretation of Quantum Theory and p-adic Quantum Theory is discussed.

Abstract:In a recent article Giustina et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 115, 250401 (2015)] report on an advanced Bell experiment, simultaneously closing loopholes for local hidden-variable theories. The authors claim that 'local realism' has been refuted, unless 'truly exotic hypotheses' are made. Here I argue that a particularly wide and natural class of local hidden-variable theories survives, for instance when the hidden variables describe a background field. Such background-based theories exploit the freedom-of-choice loophole, which cannot be closed for this type of hidden variables. The dynamics of such models can be illustrated by existing systems, e.g. from fluid mechanics.

This means that there are no definite joint probabilities and this finds a classical explanation in the structure of Special relativity (SRT). The discovered nonlocality is weaker than Albert Einstein's quantum 'spooky action at a distance', and its presence suggests certain parallels between special relativity and quantum mechanics.

Abstract:In contrast to the intuitively plausible assumption of local realism, entangled particles, even when isolated, are not allowed to possess definite properties in their own right, as quantitatively expressed by violations of Bell's inequalities [1]. Even as entanglement is now a key feature of quantum information and communication technology [2,3], it remains the most puzzling feature of quantum mechanics [4] and its conceptual foundation is still widely debated. Here we demonstrate that physical systems providing dicotomic outcomes are not able to guarantee both the rotation properties of physical quantities and local realism. This result opens the way to a new formulation of quantum mechanics based on only two elementary physical principles replacing the abstract mathematical axiomes of the present theory. According to this formulation, the coexistence of discrete outcomes with the classical continuous transformation properties of physical quantities under coordinate transformation inevitably implies quantum probabilities. These results, provide a simple physical explanation to the most debated quantum features and put into question the existence of physical quantities displaying continuous outcomes in agreement with approaches that attempt to integrate quantum theory with general relativity [5-8].

Abstract:Violation of the CHSH inequality supposedly demonstrates an irreconcilable conflict between quantum mechanics and local, realistic hidden variable theories. We show that the mathematical assumptions underlying the proof of the CHSH inequality are, in fact, incompatible with the physics of the experiments testing such inequality. This implies that we cannot dismiss local realistic hidden variable theories on the basis of currently available experimental data yet. However, we also show that an experimental proof of CHSH inequality is, in principle, possible, but it is unclear how to implement, in practice, such an experiment.

Abstract:We analyze foundational consequences of recently announced loophole free tests of violation of Bell's inequality. We consider two interpretations of these remarkable experiments. By the conventional one "Einstein was wrong and Bohr was right, there is spooky action at a distance, quantum realism is incompatible with locality." However, we show that it is still possible to treat quantum mechanics without appealing to nonlocality or denying realism. We hope that this note will attract attention of the experts in quantum foundations and convince them to come with their own comments on the final Bell's test.

On Removing the Classical-Quantum Boundary

Abstract:We argue that it is the assumption of counterfactual definiteness and not locality or realism that results in Bell inequality violations. Furthermore, this assumption of counterfactual definiteness is not supported in classical mechanics. This means that the Bell inequality must fail classically, effectively removing the classical-quantum boundary, a conclusion prophesized by Bell himself. An implication here is that a local hidden variable theory, in the configuration space of classical mechanics cannot be ruled out. One very surprising result is that classical mechanics, in the context of Hamiltons stationary principle, may in fact have stronger correlations than quantum mechanics, in that it may be the key to beat Tsirelsons bound.

Abstract:Non-locality, or quantum-non-locality, are buzzwords in the community of quantum foundation and information scientists, which purportedly describe the implications of Bell's theorem. When such phrases are treated seriously, that is it is claimed that Bell's theorem reveals non-locality as an inherent trait of the quantum description of the micro-world, this leads to logical contradictions, which will be discussed here. In fact, Bell's theorem, understood as violation of Bell inequalities by quantum predictions, is consistent with Bohr's notion of complementarity. Thus, if it points to anything, then it is rather the significance of the principle of Bohr, but even this is not a clear implication. Non-locality is a necessary consequence of Bell's theorem only if we reject complementarity by adopting some form of realism, be it additional hidden variables, additional hidden causes, etc., or counterfactual definiteness. The essay contains two largely independent parts. The first one is addressed to any reader interested in the topic. The second, discussing the notion of local causality, is addressed to people working in the field.

Abstract:In a recent paper Kent has pointed out that in consistent histories quantum theory it is possible, given initial and final states, to construct two different consistent families of histories, in each of which there is a proposition that can be inferred with probability one, and such that the projectors representing these two propositions are mutually orthogonal. In this note we stress that, according to the rules of consistent history reasoning two such propositions are not contrary in the usual logical sense namely, that one can infer that if one is true then the other is false, and both could be false. No single consistent family contains both propositions, together with the initial and final states, and hence the propositions cannot be logically compared. Consistent histories quantum theory is logically consistent, consistent with experiment as far as is known, consistent with the usual quantum predictions for measurements, and applicable to the most general physical systems. It may not be the only theory with these properties, but in our opinion, it is the most promising among present possibilities.

Abstract:I point out critical errors in the paper "Dr. Bertlmann's Socks in a Quaternionic World of Ambidextral Reality" by Joy~Christian, published in IEEE Access. Christian's model does not generate the singlet correlations but in fact simply reproduces the Bertlmann effect. John Bell's friend and colleague Reinhold Bertlmann of CERN, in his younger days, always wore one pink and one blue sock, at random. The moment you saw his left foot, you knew what colour sock would be on his right foot. Action at a distance? As John Bell liked to explain, quantum entanglement cannot be explained away in such an easy way. Yet Christian's model assigns the two particles of the EPR-B experiment an equal and opposite spin at the source, the choice being determined by a fair coin toss. However they are measured, these spins are recovered. Christian's computer simulation works by not actually simulating his model at all but by almost directly tracing the negative cosine built into his computer algebra package. Bell's theorem has not been disproved. Debate as to what it means for the foundations of physics as well as for quantum information engineering (quantum communication, computation) is more lively today than ever before. Christian's paper, alas, does not contribute to the debate, but distracts from it. A possible role for Geometric Algebra is still wide open and deserves further investigation, informed by a proper understanding of the mathematical content of Bell's theorem.
