Abstract:For every $n>0$ there is a unitary operator $U$ such that the unitary operator with simple Lebesgue spectrum is isomorphic to the tensor product $U\otimes U^2\otimes\dots\otimes U^{2^n}.$ There is an ergodic automorphism $T$ with its symmetric tensor power $T^{\odot n}$ of simple spectrum, and $T^{\odot(n+1)}$ of absolutely continuous spectrum.

Abstract:We study properties of distributions of random variables with independent identically distributed symbols of generalized L\"{u}roth series (GLS) expansions (the family of GLS-expansions contains L\"{u}roth expansion and $Q_{\infty}$- and $G_{\infty}^2$-expansions). To this end, we explore fractal properties of the family of Cantor-like sets $C[\mathit{GLS},V]$ consisting of real numbers whose GLS-expansions contain only symbols from some countable set $V\subset N\cup\{0\}$, and derive exact formulae for the determination of the Hausdorff--Besicovitch dimension of $C[\mathit{GLS},V]$. Based on these results, we get general formulae for the Hausdorff--Besicovitch dimension of the spectra of random variables with independent identically distributed GLS-symbols for the case where all but countably many points from the unit interval belong to the basis cylinders of GLS-expansions.
Entropy factorization via curvature

Abstract:We develop a new framework for establishing approximate factorization of entropy on arbitrary probability spaces, using a geometric notion known as non-negative sectional curvature. The resulting estimates are equivalent to entropy subadditivity and generalized Brascamp-Lieb inequalities, and provide a sharp modified log-Sobolev inequality for the Gibbs sampler of several particle systems in both continuous and discrete settings. The method allows us to obtain simple proofs of known results, as well as some new inequalities. We illustrate this through various applications, including discrete Gaussian free fields on arbitrary networks, the down-up walk on uniform $n$-sets, the uniform measure over permutations, and the uniform measure on the unit sphere in $\R^n$. Our method also yields a simple, coupling-based proof of the celebrated logarithmic Sobolev inequality for Langevin diffusions in a convex potential, which is one of the most emblematic applications of the Bakry-Émery criterion.

Entropy numbers of finite-dimensional Lorentz space embeddings

Abstract:The sequence of entropy numbers quantifies the degree of compactness of a linear operator acting between quasi-Banach spaces. We determine the asymptotic behavior of entropy numbers in the case of natural embeddings between finite-dimensional Lorentz spaces $\ell_{p,q}^n$ in all regimes; our results are sharp up to constants. This generalizes classical results obtained by Schütt (in the case of Banach spaces) and Edmunds and Triebel, Kühn, as well as Guédon and Litvak (in the case of quasi-Banach spaces) for entropy numbers of identities between finte-dimensional Lebesgue sequence spaces $\ell_p^n$. We employ techniques such as interpolation, volume comparison as well as techniques from sparse approximation and combinatorial arguments. Further, we characterize entropy numbers of embeddings between finite-dimensional symmetric quasi-Banach spaces in terms of best $s$-term approximation numbers.

Abstract:The Kneser--Poulsen conjecture asserts that the volume of a union of balls in Euclidean space cannot be increased by bringing their centres pairwise closer. We prove that its natural information-theoretic counterpart is true. This follows from a complete answer to a question asked in <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2210.12842" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2210.12842">arXiv:2210.12842</a> about Gaussian convolutions, namely that the Rényi entropy comparisons between a probability measure and its contractive image are preserved when both undergo simultaneous heat flow.

Abstract:We study asymptotic infinitesimal distributions of Gaussian Unitary Ensembles with permuted entries. We show that for random uniform permutations, the asymptotically permuted GUE matrix has a null infinitesimal distribution. Moreover, we show that asymptotically different permutations of the same GUE matrix are infinitesimally free. Besides this we study particular example of entry permutation - the transpose, and we show that while a GUE matrix is asymptotically free from its transpose it is not infinitesimally free from it.

The spectrum of a tensor of random and deterministic matrices

Abstract:We consider operator-valued polynomials in Gaussian Unitary Ensemble random matrices and we show that its $L^p$-norm can be upper bounded, up to an asymptotically small error, by the operator norm of the same polynomial evaluated in free semicircular variables as long as $p=o(N^{2/3})$. As a consequence, if the coefficients are $M$-dimensional matrices with $M=\exp(o(N^{2/3}))$, then the operator norm of this polynomial converges towards the one of its free counterpart. In particular this provides another proof of the Peterson-Thom conjecture thanks to the result of Ben Hayes. We also obtain similar results for polynomials in random and deterministic matrices. The approach that we take in this paper is based on an asymptotic expansion obtained by the same author in a previous paper combined with a new result of independent interest on the norm of the composition of the multiplication operator and a permutation operator acting on a tensor of $\mathcal{C}^*$-algebras.

The emphasis is on theoretical calculations of examples, in particular for noncommuting pairs and triple of operators on infinite dimensional Hilbert space. In particular, we look at the universal pair of projections in a $C^*$-algebra, the usual position and momentum operators, and triples of tridiagonal operators.

Abstract:Jones proposed the study of two subfactors of a $II_1$ factor as a quantization of two closed subspaces in a Hilbert space. The Pimsner-Popa probabilistic constant, Sano-Watatani angle, interior and exterior angle, and Connes-Størmer relative entropy (along with a slight variant of it) are a few key invariants for pair of subfactors that analyze their relative position. In practice, however, the explicit computation of these invariants is often difficult. In this article, we provide an in-depth analysis of a special class of two subfactors, namely a pair of spin model subfactors of the hyperfinite type $II_1$ factor $R$. We first characterize when two distinct $n\times n$ complex Hadamard matrices give rise to distinct spin model subfactors. Then, a detailed investigation has been carried out for pairs of (Hadamard equivalent) complex Hadamard matrices of order $2\times 2$ as well as Hadamard inequivalent complex Hadamard matrices of order $4\times 4$. To the best of our knowledge, this article is the first instance in the literature where the exact value of the Pimsner-Popa probabilistic constant and the noncommutative relative entropy for pairs of (non-trivial) subfactors have been obtained. Furthermore, we prove the factoriality of the intersection of the corresponding pair of subfactors using the `commuting square technique'. En route, we construct an infinite family of potentially new subfactors of $R$. All these subfactors are irreducible with Jones index $4n,n\geq 2$. As a consequence, the rigidity of the interior angle between the spin model subfactors is established. Last but not least, we explicitly compute the Sano-Watatani angle between the spin model subfactors.

Generating random Gaussian states

Abstract:We develop a method for the random sampling of (multimode) Gaussian states in terms of their covariance matrix, which we refer to as a random quantum covariance matrix (RQCM). We analyze the distribution of marginals and demonstrate that the eigenvalues of an RQCM converge to a shifted semicircular distribution in the limit of a large number of modes. We provide insights into the entanglement of such states based on the positive partial transpose (PPT) criteria. Additionally, we show that the symplectic eigenvalues of an RQCM converge to a probability distribution that can be characterized using free probability. We present numerical estimates for the probability of a RQCM being separable and, if not, its extendibility degree, for various parameter values and mode bipartitions.

Abstract:The entropy of a quantum state measures information or uncertainty contained in the quantum system and plays a crucial role in quantum information theory. Many entropic properties, such as the subadditivity, have been studied for the discrete system with a finite-dimensional state space, while much less is explored in the infinite-dimensional system. In this work, we study the entropic properties of the continuous system that models a collection of Gaussian modes or fields. In particular, we identify the parameter range for the Rényi, Tsallis, and Unified entropies of Gaussian states that they are additive, subadditive, and strong subadditive. We show that the Rényi entropies are subadditive, further giving rise to the subadditivity of the Tsallis and Unified entropies in certain parameter range. We also find that the Tsallis and Unified entropies are not strong subadditive, while the Rényi entropies with the order ranging from 1 to 2 are conjectured to admit the strong subadditivity. Our results are useful in studying quantum correlations and channel capacities in Gaussian systems.

Gaussian universality for approximately polynomial functions of high-dimensional data

Abstract:We establish an invariance principle for polynomial functions of $n$ independent high-dimensional random vectors, and also show that the obtained rates are nearly optimal. Both the dimension of the vectors and the degree of the polynomial are permitted to grow with $n$. Specifically, we obtain a finite sample upper bound for the error of approximation by a polynomial of Gaussians, measured in Kolmogorov distance, and extend it to functions that are approximately polynomial in a mean squared error sense. We give a corresponding lower bound that shows the invariance principle holds up to polynomial degree $o(\log n)$. The proof is constructive and adapts an asymmetrisation argument due to V. V. Senatov. As applications, we obtain a higher-order delta method with possibly non-Gaussian limits, and generalise a number of known results on high-dimensional and infinite-order U-statistics, and on fluctuations of subgraph counts.

The Spectral Gap of a Gaussian Quantum Markovian Generator

Abstract:Gaussian quantum Markov semigroups are the natural non-commutative extension of classical Ornstein-Uhlenbeck semigroups. They arise in open quantum systems of bosons where canonical non-commuting random variables of positions and momenta come into play. If there exits a faithful invariant density we explicitly compute the optimal exponential convergence rate, namely the spectral gap of the generator, in non-commutative $L^2$ spaces determined by the invariant density showing that the exact value is the lowest eigenvalue of a certain matrix determined by the diffusion and drift matrices. The spectral gap turns out to depend on the non-commutative $L^2$ space considered, whether the one determined by the so-called GNS or KMS multiplication by the square root of the invariant density. In the first case, it is strictly positive if and only if there is the maximum number of linearly independent noises. While, we exhibit explicit examples in which it is strictly positive only with KMS multiplication. We do not assume any symmetry or quantum detailed balance condition with respect to the invariant density.

Abstract:The entropic doubling $\sigma_{\operatorname{ent}}[X]$ of a random variable $X$ taking values in an abelian group $G$ is a variant of the notion of the doubling constant $\sigma[A]$ of a finite subset $A$ of $G$, but it enjoys somewhat better properties; for instance, it contracts upon applying a homomorphism. In this paper we develop further the theory of entropic doubling and give various applications, including: (1) A new proof of a result of Pálvölgyi and Zhelezov on the ``skew dimension'' of subsets of $\mathbf{Z}^D$ with small doubling; (2) A new proof, and an improvement, of a result of the second author on the dimension of subsets of $\mathbf{Z}^D$ with small doubling; (3) A proof that the Polynomial Freiman--Ruzsa conjecture over $\mathbf{F}_2$ implies the (weak) Polynomial Freiman--Ruzsa conjecture over $\mathbf{Z}$.

Abstract:For an invariant probability measure for the Gauss map, almost all numbers are Diophantine if the log of the partial quotent function is integrable. We show that with respect to a ``Renyi measure'' for the Gauss map with the log of the partial quotent function non-integrable, almost all numbers are Liouville. We also exhibit Gauss-invariant, ergodic measures with arbitrary irrationality exponent. The proofs are via the ``extravagance'' of positive, stationary, stochastic processes. In addition, we prove a Khinchin-type theorem for Diophantine approximation with respect to ``weak Renyi measures''.
