Abstract:We show that the ordinary irreducible representations of the group of automorphisms of a finite, rooted tree may be obtained following one of the classical method used for the irreducible representations of the symmetric group, namely the approach in Chapter 2 of the classical book by James and Kerber. To reach this goal, we introduce and study the combinatorics of tree compositions, a natural generalization of set compositions but with new features and more complexity due to the tree structure. This leads to a natural parametrization of the conjugacy classes and of the irreducible representations by means of the same combinatorial objects. Our trees are not necessarily spherically homogeneous and our approach is coordinate free.
Representation Theory
What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is about the representation theory of the automorphism groups of finite rooted trees. Specifically, the author aims to show how to obtain the ordinary irreducible representations of the automorphism groups of finite rooted trees by a classical method similar to that of symmetric groups. This method is based on the method described in Chapter 2 of the classic work by James and Kerber and depends on Mackey theory. The author introduces and studies the concept of tree combinatorics, which is a natural generalization of set combinatorics but has new features and higher complexity because it involves tree structures. This leads to the natural parameterizations of conjugate classes and irreducible representations, all of which are achieved through the same combinatorial objects. ### Main Objectives: 1. **Show the ordinary irreducible representations of the automorphism groups of finite rooted trees**: The author shows how to construct these representations by a classical method, which is similar to the method used in the representation theory of symmetric groups. 2. **Introduce tree combinatorics**: The author introduces a new combinatorial concept called tree combinatorics, which is a natural generalization of set combinatorics but has new features and higher complexity brought by tree structures. 3. **Parameterize conjugate classes and irreducible representations**: Through tree combinatorics, the author provides a natural way to parameterize the conjugate classes and irreducible representations of the automorphism groups. ### Key Concepts: - **Tree combinatorics**: This is a new combinatorial concept used to describe the structures and properties of trees. - **Automorphism groups of trees**: The group formed by all automorphisms of a tree (i.e., bijective mappings that preserve the tree structure). - **Irreducible representation**: A fundamental concept in group representation theory, referring to a representation that cannot be decomposed into smaller representations. - **Conjugate class**: The conjugate class of a group refers to the set of all elements in the group that are conjugate to a certain element. ### Methods: - **Mackey theory**: A theory used to study group representations, especially suitable for induced and restricted representations between subgroups. - **Tree combinatorics**: Through the concept of tree combinatorics, the author can more naturally describe and parameterize the conjugate classes and irreducible representations of the automorphism groups of trees. ### Results: - **Parameterize conjugate classes and irreducible representations**: The author successfully parameterizes the conjugate classes and irreducible representations of the automorphism groups through the concept of tree combinatorics. - **Generalize to general trees**: The author's method is applicable not only to spherical homogeneous trees but also to any finite rooted tree. ### Significance: - **Theoretical contribution**: This paper provides a new perspective and method for the representation theory of the automorphism groups of finite rooted trees, enriching the research of representation theory. - **Application prospects**: These results may have wide applications in graph theory, combinatorics, and other fields of mathematics. In conclusion, this paper successfully solves the problem of the representation theory of the automorphism groups of finite rooted trees by introducing the concept of tree combinatorics, laying the foundation for further research in this field.
