Abstract:We prove that given a fixed finite tree $P$, almost all trees contain $P$ as a subtree. Moreover, the inclusion can be made so that it induces an embedding of the corresponding (quantum) automorphism groups, thereby providing generic properties of the latter.

Abstract:We give a characterisation of quantum automorphism groups of trees. In particular, for every tree, we show how to iteratively construct its quantum automorphism group using free products and free wreath products. This can be considered a quantum version of Jordan's theorem for the automorphism groups of trees. This is one of the first characterisations of quantum automorphism groups of a natural class of graphs with quantum symmetry.

Abstract:From the work of Erdős and Rényi from 1963 it is known that almost all graphs have no symmetry. In 2017, Lupini, Mančinska and Roberson proved a quantum counterpart: Almost all graphs have no quantum symmetry. Here, the notion of quantum symmetry is phrased in terms of Banica's definition of quantum automorphism groups of finite graphs from 2005, in the framework of Woronowicz's compact quantum groups. Now, Erdős and Rényi also proved a complementary result in 1963: Almost all trees do have symmetry. The crucial point is the almost sure existence of a cherry in a tree. But even more is true: We almost surely have two cherries in a tree - and we derive that almost all trees have quantum symmetry. We give an explicit proof of this quantum counterpart of Erdős and Rényi's result on trees.

Discrete quantum subgroups of free unitary quantum groups

Abstract:We classify all compact quantum groups whose C*-algebra sits inside that of the free unitary quantum groups $U_{N}^{+}$. In other words, we classify all discrete quantum subgroups of $\widehat{U}_{N}^{+}$, thereby proving a quantum variant of Kurosh's theorem to some extent. This yields interesting families which can be described using free wreath products and free complexifications. They can also be seen as quantum automorphism groups of specific quantum graphs which generalize finite rooted regular trees, providing explicit examples of quantum trees.

Abstract:We show that the ordinary irreducible representations of the group of automorphisms of a finite, rooted tree may be obtained following one of the classical method used for the irreducible representations of the symmetric group, namely the approach in Chapter 2 of the classical book by James and Kerber. To reach this goal, we introduce and study the combinatorics of tree compositions, a natural generalization of set compositions but with new features and more complexity due to the tree structure. This leads to a natural parametrization of the conjugacy classes and of the irreducible representations by means of the same combinatorial objects. Our trees are not necessarily spherically homogeneous and our approach is coordinate free.

Abstract:We study the topological structure of the automorphism groups of compact quantum groups showing that, in parallel to a classical result due to Iwasawa, the connected component of identity of the automorphism group and of the “inner” automorphism group coincide. For compact matrix quantum groups, which can be thought of as quantum analogues of compact Lie groups, we prove that the inner automorphism group is a compact Lie group and the outer automorphism group is discrete. Applications of this to the study of group actions on compact quantum groups are highlighted. We end by providing examples of compact matrix quantum groups with infinitely-generated fusion rings, in stark contrast with the classical situation. Along the way we study the invariant theory of finite group actions on free Laurent rings and show that the rings of invariants are, in general, not finitely generated.

Abstract:To any free group automorphism, we associate a universal (cone of) limit tree(s) with three defining properties: first, the tree has a minimal isometric action of the free group with trivial arc stabilizers; second, there is a unique expanding dilation of the tree that represents the free group automorphism; and finally, the loxodromic elements are exactly the elements that weakly limit to dominating attracting laminations under forward iteration by the automorphism. So the action on the tree detects the automorphism's dominating exponential dynamics. As a corollary, our previously constructed limit pretree that detects the exponential dynamics is canonical. We also characterize all very small trees that admit an expanding homothety representing a given automorphism. In the appendix, we prove a variation of Feighn--Handel's recognition theorem for atoroidal outer automorphisms.

Abstract:We establish a novel bijective encoding that represents permutations as forests of decorated (or enriched) trees. This allows us to prove local convergence of uniform random permutations from substitution-closed classes satisfying a criticality constraint. It also enables us to reprove and strengthen permuton limits for these classes in a new way, that uses a semi-local version of Aldous' skeleton decomposition for size-constrained Galton--Watson trees.

Complexities of Theories of Profinite Subgroups of $S_ω$ via Tree Presentations

Abstract:Although $S_\omega$ (the group of all permutations of $\mathbb{N}$) is size continuum, both it and its closed subgroups can be presented as the set of paths through a countable tree. The subgroups of $S_\omega$ that can be presented this way with finite branching trees are exactly the profinite ones. We use these tree presentations to find upper bounds on the complexity of the existential theories of profinite subgroups of $S_\omega$, as well as to prove sharpness for these bounds. These complexity results enable us to distinguish a simple subclass of profinite groups, those with \emph{orbit independence}, for which we find an upper bound on the complexity of the entire first order theory.

Abstract:This paper is a brief mathematical excursion which starts from quantum electrodynamics and leads to the Moebius function of the Tamari lattice of planar binary trees, within the framework of groups of tree-expanded series. First we recall Brouder's expansion of the photon and the electron Green's functions on planar binary trees, before and after the renormalization. Then we recall the structure of Connes and Kreimer's Hopf algebra of renormalization in the context of planar binary trees, and of their dual group of tree-expanded series. Finally we show that the Moebius function of the Tamari posets of planar binary trees gives rise to a particular series in this group.

Abstract:In this work, the dynamics of a quantum walker on glued trees is revisited to understand the influence of the architecture of the graph on the efficiency of the transfer between the two roots. Instead of considering regular binary trees, we focus our attention on leafier structures where each parent node could give rise to a larger number of children. Through extensive numerical simulations, we uncover a significant dependence of the transfer on the underlying graph architecture, particularly influenced by the branching rate (M) relative to the root degree (N). Our study reveals that the behavior of the walker is isomorphic to that of a particle moving on a finite-size chain. This chain exhibits defects that originate in the specific nature of both the roots and the leaves. Therefore, the energy spectrum of the chain showcases rich features, which lead to diverse regimes for the quantum-state transfer. Notably, the formation of quasi-degenerate localized states due to significant disparities between M and N triggers a localization process on the roots. Through analytical development, we demonstrate that these states play a crucial role in facilitating almost perfect quantum beats between the roots, thereby enhancing the transfer efficiency. Our findings offer valuable insights into the mechanisms governing quantum-state transfer on trees, with potential applications for the transfer of quantum information.

We show that this fraction goes to 1, providing two very different proofs: a purely combinatorial one that is quantitative and specific to this problem; and a proof using branching process techniques that is less explicit, but also much more general, as it applies to any fixed patterns and can be extended to other trees and networks. In particular, it follows immediately from our second proof that the fraction of $d$-ary trees (resp. level-$k$ networks) that contain a fixed $d$-ary tree (resp. level-$k$ network) tends to $1$ as the number of leaves grows.

Abstract:We present a sequence of finite graphs with trivial automorphism group and non-trivial quantum automorphism group, which are the first known examples of graphs with this property. The examples are based on solution groups to (binary) linear systems. We first show that the dual of every solution group occurs as the quantum automorphism group of some graph, and then construct an infinite sequence of systems whose solution groups are nontrivial but perfect, i.e., they have trivial abelianizations. We also prove a weak quantum analog of Frucht's theorem, namely that every classical finite group $\Gamma$ can occur as the quantum automorphism group of a graph. Moreover there are graphs $G_1$ and $G_2$ such that $\mathrm{Aut}(G_1) \cong \Gamma \cong \mathrm{Aut}(G_2)$, but $\mathrm{Qut}(G_1) \not \cong \mathrm{Qut}(G_2)$ for any finite group $\Gamma$. This allows us to answer several open questions from the literature, such as proving that there do not exist any "quantum excluding groups". Additionally, we present a procedure that allows us to decolor the vertices of any vertex-colored graph while preserving its quantum automorphism group.

Quantitative twisted patterns in positive density subsets

Abstract:We make quantitative improvements to recently obtained results on the structure of the image of a large difference set under certain quadratic forms and other homogeneous polynomials. Previous proofs used deep results of Benoist-Quint on random walks in certain subgroups of $\operatorname{SL}_r(\mathbb{Z})$ (the symmetry groups of these quadratic forms) that were not of a quantitative nature. Our new observation relies on noticing that rather than studying random walks, one can obtain more quantitative results by considering polynomial orbits of these group actions that are not contained in cosets of submodules of $\mathbb{Z}^r$ of small index. Our main new technical tool is a uniform Furstenberg-Sárközy theorem that holds for a large class of polynomials not necessarily vanishing at zero, which may be of independent interest and is derived from a density increment argument and Hua's bound on polynomial exponential sums.

Abstract:The groups QF, QT, and QV are groups of quasi-automorphisms of the infinite binary tree. Their names indicate a similarity with Thompson's well-known groups F, T, and V. We will use the theory of diagram groups over semigroup presentations to prove that all of the above groups (and several generalizations) have type F-infinity. Our proof uses certain types of hybrid diagrams, which have properties in common with both planar diagrams and braided diagrams. The diagram groups defined by hybrid diagrams also act properly and isometrically on CAT(0) cubical complexes.

Abstract:Let be a locally finite tree without vertices of degree . We show that among the closed subgroups of acting with a bounded number of orbits, the Chabauty-closure of the set of topologically simple groups is the set of groups without proper open subgroup of finite index. Moreover, if all vertices of have degree , then the set of isomorphism classes of topologically simple closed subgroups of acting doubly transitively on ∂ carries a natural compact Hausdorff topology inherited from Chabauty. Some of our considerations are valid in the context of automorphism groups of locally finite connected graphs. Applications to Weyl-transitive automorphism groups of buildings are also presented.

Abstract:Let G be a finitely generated group. Two simplicial G-trees are said to be in the same deformation space if they have the same elliptic subgroups (if H fixes a point in one tree, it also does in the other). Examples include Culler-Vogtmann's outer space, and spaces of JSJ decompositions. We discuss what features are common to trees in a given deformation space, how to pass from one tree to all other trees in its deformation space, and the topology of deformation spaces. In particular, we prove that all deformation spaces are contractible complexes.

Counting Permutation Patterns with Multidimensional Trees

Abstract:We consider the well-studied pattern counting problem: given a permutation $\pi \in \mathbb{S}_n$ and an integer $k > 1$, count the number of order-isomorphic occurrences of every pattern $\tau \in \mathbb{S}_k$ in $\pi$. Our first result is an $\widetilde{\mathcal{O}}(n^2)$-time algorithm for $k=6$ and $k=7$. The proof relies heavily on a new family of graphs that we introduce, called pattern-trees. Every such tree corresponds to an integer linear combination of permutations in $\mathbb{S}_k$, and is associated with linear extensions of partially ordered sets. We design an evaluation algorithm for these combinations, and apply it to a family of linearly-independent trees. For $k=8$, we show a barrier: the subspace spanned by trees in the previous family has dimension exactly $|\mathbb{S}_8| - 1$, one less than required. Our second result is an $\widetilde{\mathcal{O}}(n^{7/4})$-time algorithm for $k=5$. This algorithm extends the framework of pattern-trees by speeding-up their evaluation in certain cases. A key component of the proof is the introduction of pair-rectangle-trees, a data structure for dominance counting.
