Abstract:We prove that the group of automorphisms of the generic meet-tree expansion of an infinite non-unary free Fra\"ıssé limit over a finite relational language is simple. As a prototypical case, the group of automorphism of the Rado meet-tree (i.e. the Fra\"ıssé limit of finite graphs which are also meet-trees) is simple.

Abstract:To any free group automorphism, we associate a universal (cone of) limit tree(s) with three defining properties: first, the tree has a minimal isometric action of the free group with trivial arc stabilizers; second, there is a unique expanding dilation of the tree that represents the free group automorphism; and finally, the loxodromic elements are exactly the elements that weakly limit to dominating attracting laminations under forward iteration by the automorphism. So the action on the tree detects the automorphism's dominating exponential dynamics. As a corollary, our previously constructed limit pretree that detects the exponential dynamics is canonical. We also characterize all very small trees that admit an expanding homothety representing a given automorphism. In the appendix, we prove a variation of Feighn--Handel's recognition theorem for atoroidal outer automorphisms.

We show that any such automorphism group is a direct limit of certain finite products of finite symmetric groups, which are parametrized by a certain deterministic finite automaton.

Abstract:We show that the ordinary irreducible representations of the group of automorphisms of a finite, rooted tree may be obtained following one of the classical method used for the irreducible representations of the symmetric group, namely the approach in Chapter 2 of the classical book by James and Kerber. To reach this goal, we introduce and study the combinatorics of tree compositions, a natural generalization of set compositions but with new features and more complexity due to the tree structure. This leads to a natural parametrization of the conjugacy classes and of the irreducible representations by means of the same combinatorial objects. Our trees are not necessarily spherically homogeneous and our approach is coordinate free.

Abstract:To any free group automorphism, we associate a real pretree with several nice properties. First, it has a rigid/non-nesting action of the free group with trivial arc stabilizers. Secondly, there is an expanding pretree-automorphism of the real pretree that represents the free group automorphism. Finally and crucially, the loxodromic elements are exactly those whose (conjugacy class) length grows exponentially under iteration of the automorphism; thus, the action on the real pretree is able to detect the growth type of an element.

Abstract:A trivial automorphism of the Boolean algebra $\mathcal P(\mathbb N) / \mathrm{Fin}$ is an automorphism induced by the action of some function $\mathbb N \rightarrow \mathbb N$. In models of forcing axioms all automorphisms are trivial, and therefore two trivial automorphisms are conjugate if and only if they have the same (modulo finite) cycle structure. We show that the Continuum Hypothesis implies that two trivial automorphisms are conjugate if and only if there are neither first-order obstructions nor index obstructions for their conjugacy. This is equivalent to given trivial automorphisms being conugate in some forcing extension of the universe. To each automorphism $\alpha$ of $\mathcal P(\mathbb N) / \mathrm{Fin}$ we associate the first-order structure $\mathfrak{A}_\alpha=(\mathcal P(\mathbb N) / \mathrm{Fin},\alpha)$ and compute the existential theories of these structures. These results are applied to resolve a question of Braga, Farah, and Vignati and prove that there are coarse metric spaces $X$ and $Y$ such that the isomorphism between their uniform Roe coronas is independent from $\mathsf{ZFC}$.

On the action of relatively irreducible automorphisms on their train tracks

Abstract:Let $G$ be a group and let ${\mathcal G}$ be a free factor system of $G$, namely a free splitting of $G$ as $G=G_1*\dots*G_k*F_r$. In this paper, we study the set of train track points for ${\mathcal G}$-irreducible automorphisms $\phi$ with exponential growth (relatively to ${\mathcal G}$). Such set is known to coincide with the minimally displaced set $\operatorname{Min}(\phi)$ of $\phi$. Our main result is that $\operatorname{Min}(\phi)$ is co-compact, under the action of the cyclic subgroup generated by $\phi$. Along the way we obtain other results that could be of independent interest. For instance, we prove that any point of $\operatorname{Min}(\phi)$ is in uniform distance from $\operatorname{Min}(\phi^{-1})$. We also prove that the action of $G$ on the product of the attracting and the repelling trees for $\phi$, is discrete. Finally, we get some fine insight about the local topology of relative outer space. As an application, we generalise a classical result of Bestvina, Feighn and Handel for the centralisers of irreducible automorphisms of free groups, in the more general context of relatively irreducible automorphisms of a free product. We also deduce that centralisers of elements of $\operatorname{Out}(F_3)$ are finitely generated, which was previously unknown. Finally, we mention that an immediate corollary of co-compactness is that $\operatorname{Min}(\phi)$ is quasi-isometric to a line.

Abstract:We investigate partial orders that are computable, in a precise sense, by finite automata. Our emphasis is on trees and linear orders. We study the relationship between automatic linear orders and trees in terms of rank functions that are related to Cantor--Bendixson rank. We prove that automatic linear orders and automatic trees have finite rank. As an application we provide a procedure for deciding the isomorphism problem for automatic ordinals. We also investigate the complexity and definability of infinite paths in automatic trees. In particular, we show that every infinite path in an automatic tree with countably many infinite paths is a regular language.
Projective Fra\"ıssé limits of trees

Abstract:The following paper has been withdrawn from consideration for publication because there are mistakes. In particular, Theorem 3.9 does not hold. Examples were found of finite trees with monotone epimorphisms which do not amalgamate. Further, finite rooted trees with monotone epimorphisms do not amalgamate. A revision, with additional co-authors A. Kwiatkowska and S. Yang, is posted on arXiv ({\it Projective Fra\"ıssé limits of trees with confluent epimorphisms} <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2312.16915" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2312.16915">2312.16915</a>). In that article, it is shown that the family of finite trees having ramification vertices of order at most 3 with monotone epimorphisms does form a projective Fra\"ıssé family and the topological realization of its Fra\"ıssé limit is the Wa\. zewski dendrite $D_3$. Further, two families of finite rooted trees with restrictions on what confluent epimorphisms are allowed are also shown to form projective Fra\"ıssé families. The topological realization of the Fra\"ıssé limit of one of these families is shown to be the Mohler-Nikiel universal dendroid. We continue study of projective Fra\"ıssé limit developed by Irvin, Panagiotopoulos and Solecki. We modify the ideas of monotone, confluent, and light mappings from continuum theory as well as several properties of continua so as to apply to topological graphs. As the topological realizations of the projective Fra\"ıssé limits we obtain the dendrite $D_3$ as well as quite new, interesting continua for which we do not yet have topological characterizations.

Abstract:An odd Coxeter group $W$ is one which admits a Coxeter system $(W,S)$ for which all the exponents $m_{ij}$ are either odd or infinity. The paper investigates the family of odd Coxeter groups whose associated labeled graphs $\mathcal{V}_{(W,S)}$ are trees. It is known that two Coxeter groups in this family are isomorphic if and only if they admit Coxeter systems having the same rank and the same multiset of finite exponents. In particular, each group in this family is isomorphic to a group that admits a Coxeter system whose associated labeled graph is a star shaped tree. We give the complete description of the automorphism group of this group, and derive a sufficient condition for the splitting of the automorphism group as a semi-direct product of the inner and the outer automorphism groups. As applications, we prove that Coxeter groups in this family satisfy the $R_\infty$-property and are (co)-Hopfian. We compare structural properties, automorphism groups, $\R_\infty$-property and (co)-Hopfianity of a special odd Coxeter group whose only finite exponent is three with the braid group and the twin group.

Abstract:In this paper, we look at an unambiguous version of Simon's forest factorization theorem, a very deep result which has wide connections in algebra, logic and automata. Given a morphism $\varphi$ from $\Sigma^+$ to a finite semigroup $S$, we construct a universal, unambiguous automaton A which is "good" for $\varphi$. The goodness of $\Aa$ gives a very easy proof for the forest factorization theorem, providing a Ramsey split for any word in $\Sigma^{\infty}$ such that the height of the Ramsey split is bounded by the number of states of A. An important application of synthesizing good automata from the morphim $\varphi$ is in the construction of regular transducer expressions (RTE) corresponding to deterministic two way transducers.

Abstract:We study the matching problem of regular tree languages, that is, "$\exists \sigma:\sigma(L)\subseteq R$?" where $L,R$ are regular tree languages over the union of finite ranked alphabets $\Sigma$ and $\mathcal{X}$ where $\mathcal{X}$ is an alphabet of variables and $\sigma$ is a substitution such that $\sigma(x)$ is a set of trees in $T(\Sigma\cup H)\setminus H$ for all $x\in \mathcal{X}$. Here, $H$ denotes a set of "holes" which are used to define a "sorted" concatenation of trees. Conway studied this problem in the special case for languages of finite words in his classical textbook "Regular algebra and finite machines" published in 1971. He showed that if $L$ and $R$ are regular, then the problem "$\exists \sigma \forall x\in \mathcal{X}: \sigma(x)\neq \emptyset\wedge \sigma(L)\subseteq R$?" is decidable. Moreover, there are only finitely many maximal solutions, the maximal solutions are regular substitutions, and they are effectively computable. We extend Conway's results when $L,R$ are regular languages of finite and infinite trees, and language substitution is applied inside-out, in the sense of Engelfriet and Schmidt (1977/78). More precisely, we show that if $L\subseteq T(\Sigma\cup\mathcal{X})$ and $R\subseteq T(\Sigma)$ are regular tree languages over finite or infinite trees, then the problem "$\exists \sigma \forall x\in \mathcal{X}: \sigma(x)\neq \emptyset\wedge \sigma_{\mathrm{io}}(L)\subseteq R$?" is decidable. Here, the subscript "$\mathrm{io}$" in $\sigma_{\mathrm{io}}(L)$ refers to "inside-out". Moreover, there are only finitely many maximal solutions $\sigma$, the maximal solutions are regular substitutions and effectively computable. The corresponding question for the outside-in extension $\sigma_{\mathrm{oi}}$ remains open, even in the restricted setting of finite trees.

Abstract:For a locally finite, connected graph $\Gamma$, let $\operatorname{Map}(\Gamma)$ denote the group of proper homotopy equivalences of $\Gamma$ up to proper homotopy. Excluding sporadic cases, we show $\operatorname{Aut}(S(M_\Gamma)) \cong \operatorname{Map}(\Gamma)$, where $\mathcal{S}(M_\Gamma)$ is the sphere complex of the doubled handlebody $M_\Gamma$ associated to $\Gamma$. We also construct an exhaustion of $S(M_\Gamma)$ by finite strongly rigid sets when $\Gamma$ has finite rank and finitely many rays, and an appropriate generalization otherwise.

The $X-$join $\Gamma$ of a set of complete or empty graphs $\{X_x \}_{x \in V(X)}$ is a simple graph with the following vertex and edge sets: \begin{eqnarray*} V(\Gamma) &=& \{(x,y) \ | \ x \in V(X) \ \& \ y \in V(X_x) \},\\ E(\Gamma) &=& \{(x,y)(x^\prime,y^\prime) \ | \ xx^\prime \in E(X) \ or \ else \ x = x^\prime \ \& \ yy^\prime \in E(X_x)\}. \end{eqnarray*} The $X-$join graph $\Gamma$ is called reduced if for vertices $x, y \in V(X)$, $x \ne y$, $N_X(x) \setminus \{ y\} = N_X(y) \setminus \{ x\}$ implies that $(i)$ if $xy \not\in E(X)$ then the graphs $X_x$ or $X_y$ are non-empty; $(ii)$ if $xy \in E(X)$ then $X_x$ or $X_y$ are not complete graphs. In this paper, we want to explore how the graph theoretical properties of $X-$join of graphs effect on its automorphism group. Among other results we compute the automorphism group of reduced complete-empty $X-$join of graphs.

Complexities of Theories of Profinite Subgroups of $S_ω$ via Tree Presentations

Abstract:Although $S_\omega$ (the group of all permutations of $\mathbb{N}$) is size continuum, both it and its closed subgroups can be presented as the set of paths through a countable tree. The subgroups of $S_\omega$ that can be presented this way with finite branching trees are exactly the profinite ones. We use these tree presentations to find upper bounds on the complexity of the existential theories of profinite subgroups of $S_\omega$, as well as to prove sharpness for these bounds. These complexity results enable us to distinguish a simple subclass of profinite groups, those with \emph{orbit independence}, for which we find an upper bound on the complexity of the entire first order theory.

Abstract:We extend the functorial approach to automata by Colcombet and Petrişan [<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1712.07121" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1712.07121">arXiv:1712.07121</a>] from the category of sets to any elementary topos with a natural number object and establish general Myhill-Nerode theorems in our setting. As a special case we recover the result of Bojańczyk, Klin and Lasota [<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1402.0897" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1402.0897">arXiv:1402.0897</a>] for orbit-finite nominal automata by considering automata in the Myhill-Schanuel topos of nominal sets.

Automorphism Groups of Finite Extensions of Fields and the Minimal Ramification Problem

Abstract:We study the following question: given a global field $F$ and finite group $G$, what is the minimal $r$ such that there exists a finite extension $K/F$ with $\mathrm{Aut}(K/F)\cong G$ that is ramified over exactly $r$ places of $F$? We conjecture that the answer is $\le 1$ for any global field $F$ and finite group $G$. In the case when $F$ is a number field we show that the answer is always $\le 4[F:\mathbb Q]$. We show that assuming Schinzel's Hypothesis H the answer is always $\le 1$ if $F$ is a number field. We show unconditionally that the answer is always $\le 1$ if $F$ is a global function field. We also show that for a broader class of fields $F$ than previously known, every finite group $G$ can be realized as the automorphism group of a finite extension $K/F$ (without restriction on the ramification). An important new tool used in this work is a recent result of the author and C. Tsang, which says that for any finite group $G$ there exists a natural number $n$ and a subgroup $H\leqslant S_n$ of the symmetric group such that $N_{S_n}(H)/H\cong G$.
