Abstract:The Friendship Theorem states that if in a party any pair of persons has precisely one common friend, then there is always a person who is everybody's friend and the theorem has been proved by Paul Erdös, Alfréd Rényi, and Vera T. Sós in 1966. This paper was written in response to the question, ``What would happen if the hypothesis stating that any pair of persons has exactly one common friend were replaced with one stating that any pair of persons warms to exactly one person?". We call a digraph obtained in this way a friendship digraph. It is easy to check that a symmetric friendship digraph becomes a friendship graph if each directed cycle of length two is replaced with an edge. Based on this observation, one can say that a friendship digraph is a generalization of a friendship graph. In this paper, we provide a digraph formulation of the Friendship Theorem by defining friendship digraphs as those in which any two distinct vertices have precisely one common out-neighbor. We also establish a sufficient and necessary condition for the existence of friendship digraphs.

Abstract:The dichromatic number $\vec\chi(D)$ of a digraph $D$ is the minimum size of a partition of its vertices into acyclic induced subgraphs. We denote by $\lambda(D)$ the maximum local edge connectivity of a digraph $D$. Neumann-Lara proved that for every digraph $D$, $\vec\chi(D) \leq \lambda(D) + 1$. In this paper, we characterize the digraphs $D$ for which $\vec\chi(D) = \lambda(D) + 1$. This generalizes an analogue result for undirected graph proved by Stiebitz and Toft as well as the directed version of Brooks' Theorem proved by Mohar. Along the way, we introduce a generalization of Hajós join that gives a new way to construct families of dicritical digraphs that is of independent interest.

Abstract:Distance-hereditary graphs are in important graph class in graph theory, as they are well-placed in the graph class hierarchy and permit many algorithmic results. We investigate structural and algorithmic advantages of a directed version of this well-researched graph class. Since the previously defined distance-hereditary digraphs do not permit a recursive structure, we define directed twin-distance-hereditary graphs, which can be constructed by several twin and pendant vertex operations analogously to undirected distance-hereditary graphs and which still preserves the distance hereditary property. We give a characterization by forbidden induced subdigraphs and place the class in a hierarchy comparing it to related classes. We further show algorithmic advantages concerning directed width parameters, directed graph coloring and some other well-known digraph problems which are NP-hard in general, but computable in polynomial or even linear time on twin-distance-hereditary digraphs. This includes computability of directed path-width and tree-width in linear time and the directed chromatic number in polynomial time. From our result that directed twin-distance-hereditary graphs have directed clique-width at most 3 it follows by Courcelle's theorem on directed clique-width that we can compute every graph problem describable in monadic second-order logic on quantification over vertices and vertex sets as well as some further problems like Hamiltonian Path/Cycle in polynomial time.

Distance ideals of digraphs

Abstract:We focus on strongly connected, strong for short, digraphs since in this setting distance is defined for every pair of vertices. Distance ideals generalize the spectrum and Smith normal form of several distance matrices associated with strong digraphs. We introduce the concept of pattern which allow us to characterize the family $\Gamma_1$ of digraphs with only one trivial distance ideal over ${\mathbb Z}$. This result generalizes an analogous result for undirected graphs that states that connected graphs with one trivial ideal over $\mathbb{Z}$ consists of either complete graphs or complete bipartite graphs. It turns out that the strong digraphs in $\Gamma_1$ consists in the circuit with 3 vertices and a family $\Lambda$ of strong digraphs that contains complete graphs and complete bipartite graphs, regarded as digraphs. We also compute all distance ideals of some strong digraphs in the family $\Lambda$. Then, we explore circuits, which turn out to be an infinite family of minimal forbidden digraphs, as induced subdigraphs, for the strong digraphs in $\Gamma_1$. This suggests that a characterization of $\Gamma_1$ in terms of forbidden induced subdigraphs is harder than using patterns.

Abstract:In 1994, Alon construct a triangle-free $(n,d,\lambda)$-graph with $d = \Omega(n^{2/3})$ and $\lambda = O(d^{1/2})$ for an exponentially increasing sequence of integers $n$. Using his ingenious construction, we deduce that there exist triangle-free $(n,d,\lambda)$-graphs with $d = \Omega(n^{2/3})$ and $\lambda = O( (d \log n)^{1/2} )$ for all sufficiently large $n$.

Characterizing graph-nonedge pairs with single interval Cayley configuration spaces in 3-dimensions

Abstract:A linkage $(G,\ell)$ is a pair containing a finite simple undirected graph $G$ and a squared edge-length map $\ell$ that assigns squared Euclidean lengths to the edges of $G$. A $d$-realization of $(G,\ell)$ is an assignment of points in $\mathbb{R}^d$ to the vertices of $G$ for which pair-wise distances between points agree with $\ell$. For $d \leq 3$, we characterize pairs $(G,f)$, where $f$ is a nonedge of $G$, such that, for any squared edge-length map $\ell$, there is a single interval of attained distance values between the endpoints of $f$ over all $d$-realizations of $(G,\ell)$, answering a question posed in \cite{sitharam2010characterizing} a decade ago, which gave an equivalent characterization for $d\le 2$ that does not generalize to $d\ge 3$. Two notable byproducts of this characterization are a new tool for partial $3$-tree completion, a well-studied problem, and a deeper understanding of the realization space of partial $3$-tree linkages through the lens of Cayley realization spaces. Although related to the minor closed class of $3$-flattenable graphs, the class of pairs $(G,f)$ with the above property is not minor closed, has no obvious well quasi-ordering, and there are infinitely many minimal graphs-nonedge pairs - w.r.t. edge contractions - in the complement class. Our characterization overcomes these obstacles, is based on the forbidden minors of the class of $3$-flattenable graphs, and contributes to the theory of Cayley configurations used for analyzing distance-constrained configuration spaces in a range of application domains. Generalizations to higher dimensions and efficient algorithmic characterizations are conjectured.

Abstract:A digraph G is k ‐geodetic if for any (not necessarily distinct) vertices u , v there is at most one directed walk from u to v with length not exceeding k . The order of a k ‐geodetic digraph with minimum out‐degree d is bounded below by the directed Moore bound M(d , k ) = 1 + d + d 2 + ⋯ + d k . The Moore bound can be met only in the trivial cases d = 1 and k = 1 , so it is of interest to look for k ‐geodetic digraphs with out‐degree d and smallest possible order M(d , k ) + ε , where ε is the excess of the digraph. Miller, Miret and Sillasen recently ruled out the existence of digraphs with excess one for k = 3 , 4 and d ≥ 2 and for k = 2 and d ≥ 8 . We conjecture that there are no digraphs with excess one for d , k ≥ 2 and in this paper we investigate the structure of minimal counterexamples to this conjecture. We severely constrain the possible structures of the outlier function and prove the nonexistence of certain digraphs with degree three and excess one, as well closing the open cases k = 2 and d = 3 , 4 , 5 , 6 , 7 left by the analysis of Miller et al. We further show that there are no involutary digraphs with excess one, that is, the outlier function of any such digraph must contain a cycle of length ≥ 3 .

Abstract:An acyclic digraph in which every vertex has indegree at most $i$ and outdegree at most $j$ is called an $(i,j)$ digraph for some positive integers $i$ and $j$. The phylogeny graph of a digraph $D$ has $V(D)$ as the vertex set and an edge $uv$ if and only if one of the following is true: $(u,v) \in A(D)$; $(v,u) \in A(D)$; $(u,w) \in A(D)$ and $(v,w) \in A(D)$ for some $w \in V(D)$. A graph $G$ is a phylogeny graph (resp.\ an $(i,j)$ phylogeny graph) if there is an acyclic digraph $D$ (resp.\ an $(i,j)$ digraph $D$) such that the phylogeny graph of $D$ is isomorphic to $G$. Lee~{\em et al.} (2017) and Eoh and Kim (2021) studied the $(2,2)$ phylogeny graphs, $(1,j)$ phylogeny graphs, $(i,1)$ phylogeny graphs, and $(2,j)$ phylogeny graphs. Their work was motivated by problems related to evidence propagation in a Bayesian network for which it is useful to know which acyclic digraphs have chordal moral graphs (phylogeny graphs are called moral graphs in Bayesian network theory). In this paper, we extend their work by giving necessary conditions of chordal $(i,2)$ phylogeny graphs. We go further to give necessary conditions of $(i,j)$ phylogeny graphs by listing forbidden induced subgraphs.

Abstract:Chordal graphs are important in structural graph theory. Chordal digraphs are a digraph analogue of chordal graphs and have been a subject of active studies recently. Unlike chordal graphs, chordal digraphs lack many structural properties such as forbidden subdigraph or representation characterizations. In this paper we introduce the notion of semi-strict chordal digraphs which form a class strictly between chordal digraphs and chordal graphs. Semi-strict chordal digraphs have rich structural properties. We characterize semi-strict chordal digraphs in terms of knotting graphs, a notion analogous to the one introduced by Gallai for the study of comparability graphs. We also give forbidden subdigraph characterizations of semi-strict chordal digraphs within the classes of locally semicomplete digraphs and weakly quasi-transitive digraphs.

Abstract:If each vertex of an acyclic digraph has indegree at most $i$ and outdegree at most $j$, then it is called an $(i,j)$ digraph, which was introduced by Hefner~{\it et al.}~(1991). Whereas Hefner~{\it et al.} characterized $(i,j)$ digraphs whose competition graphs are interval, characterizing the competition graphs of $(i,j)$ digraphs is not an easy task. In this paper, we introduce the concept of $\langle i,j \rangle$ digraphs, which relax the acyclicity condition of $(i,j)$ digraphs, and study their competition graphs. By doing so, we obtain quite meaningful results. Firstly, we give a necessary and sufficient condition for a loopless graph being an $\langle i,j \rangle$ competition graph for some positive integers $i$ and $j$. Then we study on an $\langle i,j \rangle$ competition graph being chordal and present a forbidden subdigraph characterization. Finally, we study the family of $\langle i,j \rangle$ competition graphs, denoted by $\mathcal{G}_{\langle i,j \rangle}$, and identify the set containment relation on $\{\mathcal{G}_{\langle i,j \rangle}\colon\, i,j \ge 1\}$.

Abstract:For a graph Γ we say that λ exists if every edge lies in exactly λ triangles. Egawa has shown that the Hamming graphs are determined by their parameters, unless λ equals 2. In that case the only possible graphs are the Doob graphs. Rifà and Huguet and Nomura generalised this result by Egawa for λ ≠ 2. We generalise Egawa′s result for λ = 2. The main part of the proof is a characterization of cartesian products of graphs.

Abstract:A tantalizing open problem, posed independently by Stiebitz in 1995 and by Alon in 2006, asks whether for every pair of integers $s,t \ge 1$ there exists a finite number $F(s,t)$ such that the vertex set of every digraph of minimum out-degree at least $F(s,t)$ can be partitioned into non-empty parts $A$ and $B$ such that the subdigraphs induced on $A$ and $B$ have minimum out-degree at least $s$ and $t$, respectively. In this short note, we prove that if $F(2,2)$ exists, then all the numbers $F(s,t)$ with $s,t\ge 1$ exist and satisfy $F(s,t)=\Theta(s+t)$. In consequence, the problem of Alon and Stiebitz reduces to the case $s=t=2$. Moreover, the numbers $F(s,t)$ with $s,t \ge 2$ either all exist and grow linearly, or all of them do not exist.

Subdivisions in dicritical digraphs with large order or digirth

Abstract:Aboulker et al. proved that a digraph with large enough dichromatic number contains any fixed digraph as a subdivision. The dichromatic number of a digraph is the smallest order of a partition of its vertex set into acyclic induced subdigraphs. A digraph is dicritical if the removal of any arc or vertex decreases its dichromatic number. In this paper we give sufficient conditions on a dicritical digraph of large order or large directed girth to contain a given digraph as a subdivision. In particular, we prove that (i) for every integers $k,\ell$, large enough dicritical digraphs with dichromatic number $k$ contain an orientation of a cycle with at least $\ell$ vertices; (ii) there are functions $f,g$ such that for every subdivision $F^*$ of a digraph $F$, digraphs with directed girth at least $f(F^*)$ and dichromatic number at least $g(F)$ contain a subdivision of $F^*$, and if $F$ is a tree, then $g(F)=|V(F)|$; (iii) there is a function $f$ such that for every subdivision $F^*$ of $TT_3$ (the transitive tournament on three vertices), digraphs with directed girth at least $f(F^*)$ and minimum out-degree at least $2$ contain $F^*$ as a subdivision.

Abstract:Given a graph G=(V,E) of maximum degree Δ, denoting by d(x,y) the distance in G between nodes x,y∈V , an L(3,2,1) -labeling of G is an assignment l from V to the set of non-negative integers such that |l(x)−l(y)|≥3 if x and y are adjacent, |l(x)−l(y)|≥2 if d(x,y)=2 , and |l(x)−l(y)|≥1 if d(x,y)=3 , for all x and y in V . The L(3,2,1) -number λ(G) is the smallest positive integer such that G admits an L(3,2,1) -labeling with labels from {0,1,...,λ(G)} . In this paper, the L(3,2,1) -number of certain planar graphs is determined, proving that it is linear in Δ, although the general upper bound for the L(3,2,1) -number of planar graphs is quadratic in Δ.

A Dirac-type theorem for arbitrary Hamiltonian $H$-linked digraphs

Abstract:Given any digraph $D$, let $\mathcal{P}(D)$ be the family of all directed paths in $D$, and let $H$ be a digraph with the arc set $A(H)=\{a_1, \ldots, a_k\}$. The digraph $D$ is called arbitrary Hamiltonian $H$-linked if for any injective mapping $f: V(H)\rightarrow V(D)$ and any integer set $\mathcal{N}=\{n_1, \ldots, n_k\}$ with $n_i\geq4$ for each $i\in\{1, \ldots, k\}$, there exists a mapping $g: A(H)\rightarrow \mathcal{P}(D)$ such that for every arc $a_i=uv$, $g(a_i)$ is a directed path from $f(u)$ to $f(v)$ of length $n_i$, and different arcs are mapped into internally vertex-disjoint directed paths in $D$, and $\bigcup_{i\in[k]}V(g(a_i))=V(D)$. In this paper, we prove that for any digraph $H$ with $k$ arcs and $\delta(H)\geq1$, every digraph of sufficiently large order $n$ with minimum in- and out-degree at least $n/2+k$ is arbitrary Hamiltonian $H$-linked. Furthermore, we show that the lower bound is best possible. Our main result extends some work of Kühn and Osthus et al. \cite{20081,20082} and Ferrara, Jacobson and Pfender \cite{Jacobson}. Besides, as a corollary of our main theorem, we solve a conjecture of Wang \cite{Wang} for sufficiently large graphs.

Abstract:Reed in 1998 conjectured that every graph $G$ satisfies $\chi(G) \leq \lceil \frac{\Delta(G)+1+\omega(G)}{2} \rceil$. As a partial result, he proved the existence of $\varepsilon > 0$ for which every graph $G$ satisfies $\chi(G) \leq \lceil (1-\varepsilon)(\Delta(G)+1)+\varepsilon\omega(G) \rceil$. We propose an analogue conjecture for digraphs. Given a digraph $D$, we denote by $\vec{\chi}(D)$ the dichromatic number of $D$, which is the minimum number of colours needed to partition $D$ into acyclic induced subdigraphs. We let $\overleftrightarrow{\omega}(D)$ denote the size of the largest biclique (a set of vertices inducing a complete digraph) of $D$ and $\tilde{\Delta}(D) = \max_{v\in V(D)} \sqrt{d^+(v) \cdot d^-(v)}$. We conjecture that every digraph $D$ satisfies $\vec{\chi}(D) \leq \lceil \frac{\tilde{\Delta}(D)+1+\overleftrightarrow{\omega}(D)}{2} \rceil$, which if true implies Reed's conjecture. As a partial result, we prove the existence of $\varepsilon >0$ for which every digraph $D$ satisfies $\vec{\chi}(D) \leq \lceil (1-\varepsilon)(\tilde{\Delta}(D)+1)+\varepsilon\overleftrightarrow{\omega}(D) \rceil$. This implies both Reed's result and an independent result of Harutyunyan and Mohar for oriented graphs. To obtain this upper bound on $\vec{\chi}$, we prove that every digraph $D$ with $\overleftrightarrow{\omega}(D) > \frac{2}{3}(\Delta_{\max}(D)+1)$, where $\Delta_{\max}(D) = \max_{v\in V(D)} \max(d^+(v),d^-(v))$, admits an acyclic set of vertices intersecting each biclique of $D$, which generalises a result of King.
