Abstract:A digraph is $s$-arc-transitive if its automorphism group is transitive on directed paths with $s$ edges, that is, on $s$-arcs. Although infinite families of finite $s$-arc transitive digraphs of arbitrary valency were constructed by the third author in 1989, existence of a vertex-primitive $2$-arc-transitive digraph was not known until an infinite family was constructed by the second author with Li and Xia in 2017. This led to a conjecture by the second author and Xia in 2018 that, for a finite vertex-primitive $s$-arc-transitive digraph, $s$ is at most $2$, together with their proof that it is sufficient to prove the conjecture for digraphs with an almost simple group of automorphisms. This paper confirms the conjecture for finite symplectic groups.

Abstract:The fact that the adjacency matrix of every finite graph is diagonalizable plays a fundamental role in spectral graph theory. Since this fact does not hold in general for digraphs, it is natural to ask whether it holds for digraphs with certain level of symmetry. Interest on this question dates back to early 1980s, when P.~J.~Cameron asked for the existence of arc-transitive digraphs with non-diagonalizable adjacency matrix. This was answered in the affirmative by L.~Babai in 1985. Then Babai posed the open problem of constructing a 2-arc-transitive digraph and a vertex-primitive digraph whose adjacency matrices are not diagonalizable. In this paper, we solve Babai's problem by constructing an infinite family of $s$-arc-transitive digraphs for each integer $s\geq2$, and an infinite family of vertex-primitive digraphs, respectively, both of whose adjacency matrices are non-diagonalizable.

Abstract:We construct the first infinite families of locally arc transitive graphs with the property that the automorphism group has two orbits on vertices and is quasiprimitive on exactly one orbit, of twisted wreath type. This work contributes to Giudici, Li and Praeger's program for the classification of locally arc transitive graphs by showing that the star normal quotient twisted wreath category also contains infinitely many graphs.

Abstract:Abstract The relative fixity of a digraph $$\Gamma $$ Γ is defined as the ratio between the largest number of vertices fixed by a nontrivial automorphism of $$\Gamma $$ Γ and the number of vertices of $$\Gamma $$ Γ . We characterize the vertex-primitive digraphs whose relative fixity is at least $$\frac{1}{3}$$ 1 3 , and we show that there are only finitely many vertex-primitive digraphs of bounded out-valency and relative fixity exceeding a positive constant.

Abstract:<p>We prove that, given a finite graph Σ satisfying some mild conditions, there exist infinitely many tetravalent half-arc-transitive normal covers of Σ. Applying this result, we establish the existence of infinite families of finite tetravalent half-arc-transitive graphs with certain vertex stabilizers, and classify the vertex stabilizers up to order 2<sup>8</sup> of finite connected tetravalent half-arc-transitive graphs. This sheds some new light on the longstanding problem of classifying the vertex stabilizers of finite tetravalent half-arc-transitive graphs.</p>

Abstract:In this paper, three infinite families of locally 2-arc transitive graphs are constructed, which are vertex-intransitive, regular and all vertex stabilizers are conjugate. To the best of our knowledge these are the first infinite families of graphs with these properties. In particular, they are semi-symmetric. It is then shown that the only locally 2-arc transitive graphs admitting a Ree simple group are (i) the graphs in these three families, (ii) (vertex-transitive) 2-arc transitive graphs admitting a Ree simple group, previously classified by the first and third authors, and (iii) standard double covers of the graphs in (ii). This is the first complete classification of locally 2-arc transitive graphs for an infinite family of simple groups.
Finite $s$-geodesic-transitive digraphs

Abstract:This paper initiates the investigation of the family of $(G,s)$-geodesic-transitive digraphs with $s\geq 2$. We first give a global analysis by providing a reduction result. Let $\Gamma$ be such a digraph and let $N$ be a normal subgroup of $G$ maximal with respect to having at least $3$ orbits. Then the quotient digraph $\Gamma_N$ is $(G/N,s')$-geodesic-transitive where $s'=\min\{s,\diam(\Gamma_N)\}$, $G/N$ is either quasiprimitive or bi-quasiprimitive on $V(\Gamma_N)$, and $\Gamma_N$ is either directed or an undirected complete graph. Moreover, it is further shown that if $\Gamma $ is not $(G,2)$-arc-transitive, then $G/N$ is quasiprimitive on $V(\Gamma_N)$. On the other hand, we also consider the case that the normal subgroup $N$ of $G$ has one orbit on the vertex set. We show that if $N$ is regular on $V(\Gamma)$, then $\Gamma$ is a circuit, and particularly each $(G,s)$-geodesic-transitive normal Cayley digraph with $s\geq 2$, is a circuit. Finally, we investigate $(G,2)$-geodesic-transitive digraphs with either valency at most 5 or diameter at most 2. Let $\Gamma$ be a $(G,2)$-geodesic-transitive digraph. It is proved that: if $\Gamma$ has valency at most $5$, then $\Gamma$ is $(G,2)$-arc-transitive; if $\Gamma$ has diameter $2$, then $\Gamma$ is a balanced incomplete block design with the Hadamard parameters.

Abstract:Given a graph X with a Hamilton cycle C , the compression factor of C is the order of the largest cyclic subgroup of , and the Hamilton compression of X is the maximum of where C runs over all Hamilton cycles in X . Generalizing the well-known open problem regarding the existence of vertex-transitive graphs without Hamilton paths/cycles, it was asked by Gregor et al. (Ann Comb, arXiv:2205.08126v1, https://doi.org/10.1007/s00026-023-00674-y, 2023) whether for every positive integer k , there exists infinitely many vertex-transitive graphs (Cayley graphs) with Hamilton compression equal to k . Since an infinite family of Cayley graphs with Hamilton compression equal to 1 was given there, the question is completely resolved in this paper in the case of Cayley graphs with a construction of Cayley graphs of semidirect products where p is a prime and a divisor of . Further, infinite families of non-Cayley vertex-transitive graphs with Hamilton compression equal to 1 are given. All of these graphs being metacirculants, some additional results on Hamilton compression of metacirculants of specific orders are also given.

Our construction generalises known constructions for 4-vertex-critical -free graphs and 5-vertex-critical -free graphs and is in contrast to the fact that there are only finitely many 5-vertex-critical -free graphs. Abstract:We prove that there exist four operations such that given any two strongly $2$-connected digraphs $H$ and $D$ where $H$ is a butterfly-minor of $D$, there exists a sequence $D_0,\dots, D_n$ where $D_0=H$, $D_n=D$ and for every $0\leq i\leq n-1$, $D_i$ is a strongly $2$-connected butterfly-minor of $D_{i+1}$ which is obtained by a single application of one of the four operations. As a consequence of this theorem, we obtain that every strongly $2$-connected digraph can be generated from a concise family of strongly $2$-connected digraphs by using these four operations.

Abstract:For every odd prime power $q$, a family of pairwise nonisomorphic normal arc-transitive divisible design Cayley digraphs with isomorphic neighborhood designs over a Heisenberg group of order $q^3$ is constructed. It is proved that these digraphs are not distinguished by the Weisfeiler-Leman algorithm and have the Weisfeiler-Leman dimension $3$.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider a variant of dichromatic number on digraphs with prescribed sets of arcs. Let $D$ be a digraph and let $Z_1, Z_2$ be two sets of arcs in $D$. For a subdigraph $H$ of $D$, let $A(H)$ denote the set of all arcs of $H$. Let $\mu(D, Z_1, Z_2)$ be the minimum number of parts in a vertex partition $\mathcal{P}$ of $D$ such that for every $X\in \mathcal{P}$, the subdigraph of $D$ induced by $X$ contains no directed cycle $C$ with $|A(C)\cap Z_1|\neq |A(C)\cap Z_2|$. For $Z_1=A(D)$ and $Z_2=\emptyset$, $\mu(D, Z_1, Z_2)$ is equal to the dichromatic number of $D$. We prove that for every digraph $F$ and every tuple $(a_e,b_e,r_e, q_e)$ of integers with $q_e\ge 2$ and $\gcd(a_e,q_e)=\gcd(b_e,q_e)=1$ for each arc $e$ of $F$, there exists an integer $N$ such that if $\mu(D, Z_1, Z_2)\ge N$, then $D$ contains a subdigraph isomorphic to a subdivision of $F$ in which each arc $e$ of $F$ is subdivided into a directed path~$P_e$ such that~$a_e|A(P_e)\cap Z_1|+b_e|A(P_e)\cap Z_2|\equiv {r_e}\pmod {q_e}$. This generalizes a theorem of Steiner [Subdivisions with congruence constraints in digraphs of large chromatic number, <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2208.06358" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2208.06358">arXiv:2208.06358</a>] which corresponds to the case when $(a_e, b_e, Z_1, Z_2)=(1, 1, A(D), \emptyset)$.

A complete characterization of split digraphs with a strong arc decomposition

Abstract:A \textbf{strong arc decomposition} of a (multi-)digraph $D(V, A)$ is a partition of its arc set $A$ into two disjoint arc sets $A_1$ and $A_2$ such that both of the spanning subdigraphs $D(V, A_1)$ and $D(V, A_2)$ are strong. In this paper, we fully characterize all split digraphs that do not have a strong decomposition. This resolves two problems proposed by Bang-Jensen and Wang and contributes to a series of efforts aimed at addressing this problem for specific graph classes. This work continues the research on semicomplete composition [Bang-Jensen, Gutin and Yeo, J. Graph Theory, 2020]; on locally semicomplete digraphs [Bang-Jensen and Huang, J. Combin. Theory Ser. B, 2010]; on a type of tournaments [Bang-Jensen and Yeo, Combinatorica, 2004].

Packing Strong Subgraph in Digraphs

Abstract:In this paper, we study two types of strong subgraph packing problems in digraphs, including internally disjoint strong subgraph packing problem and arc-disjoint strong subgraph packing problem. These problems can be viewed as generalizations of the famous Steiner tree packing problem and are closely related to the strong arc decomposition problem. We first prove the NP-completeness for the internally disjoint strong subgraph packing problem restricted to symmetric digraphs and Eulerian digraphs. Then we get inapproximability results for the arc-disjoint strong subgraph packing problem and the internally disjoint strong subgraph packing problem. Finally we study the arc-disjoint strong subgraph packing problem restricted to digraph compositions and obtain some algorithmic results by utilizing the structural properties.

Antidirected trees in dense digraphs

Abstract:We show that if $D$ is an $n$-vertex digraph with more than $(k-1)n$ arcs that does not contain any of three forbidden digraphs, then $D$ contains every antidirected tree on $k$ arcs. The forbidden digraphs are those orientations of $K_{2, \lceil k/12\rceil}$ where each of the vertices in the class of size two has either out-degree $0$ or in-degree $0$. This proves a conjecture of Addario-Berry et al. for a broad class of digraphs, and generalises a result for $K_{2, \lfloor k/12\rfloor}$-free graphs by Balasubramanian and Dobson. We also show that every digraph $D$ on $n$ vertices with more than $(k-1)n$ arcs contains every antidirected $k$-arc caterpillar, thus solving the above conjecture for caterpillars. This generalises a result of Perles.
