Abstract:In this note, we show how a combinatorial identity of Frisch can be applied to prove and generalize some well-known identities involving harmonic numbers. We also present some combinatorial identities involving odd harmonic numbers which can be inferred straightforwardly from our results.

Abstract:Multiple harmonic-like numbers are studied using the generating function approach. A closed form is stated for binomial sums involving these numbers and two additional parameters. Several corollaries and examples are presented which are immediate consequences of the main result. Finally, combinatorial identities involving harmonic-like numbers and other prominent sequences like hyperharmonic numbers and odd harmonic numbers are offered.

Combinatorial approach to Andrews-Gordon and Bressoud type identities

Abstract:We provide combinatorial tools inspired by work of Warnaar to give combinatorial interpretations of the sum sides of the Andrews-Gordon and Bressoud identities. More precisely, we give an explicit weight- and length-preserving bijection between sets related to integer partitions, which provides these interpretations. In passing, we discover the $q$-series version of an identity of Kurşungöz, similar to the Bressoud identity but with opposite parity conditions, which we prove combinatorially using the classical Bressoud identity and our bijection. We also use this bijection to prove combinatorially many identities, some known and other new, of the Andrews-Gordon and Bressoud type.

Combinatorial sums, series and integrals involving odd harmonic numbers

Abstract:We present several types of ordinary generating functions involving central binomial coefficients, harmonic numbers, and odd harmonic numbers. Our results complement those of Boyadzhiev from 2012 and Chen from 2016. Based on these generating functions we evaluate several infinite series in closed form. In addition, we offer some combinatorial sum identities involving Catalan numbers, harmonic numbers and odd harmonic numbers. Finally, we analyze a special log-integral with Fibonacci numbers and odd harmonic numbers.

A generalization of combinatorial identities for stable discrete series constants

Abstract:This article is concerned with the constants that appear in Harish-Chandra's character formula for stable discrete series of real reductive groups, although it does not require any knowledge about real reductive groups or discrete series. In Harish-Chandra's work the only information we have about these constants is that they are uniquely determined by an inductive property. Later Goresky-Kottwitz-MacPherson and Herb gave different formulas for these constants. In this article we generalize these formulas to the case of arbitrary finite Coxeter groups (in this setting, discrete series no longer make sense), and give a direct proof that the two formulas agree. We actually prove a slightly more general identity that also implies the combinatorial identity underlying the discrete series character identities of Morel. We deduce this identity from a general abstract theorem giving a way to calculate the alternating sum of the values of a valuation on the chambers of a Coxeter arrangement. We also introduce a ring structure on the set of valuations on polyhedral cones in Euclidean space with values in a fixed ring. This gives a theoretical framework for the valuation appearing in Appendix A of the Goresky-Kottwitz-MacPherson paper. In Appendix B we extend the notion of $2$-structures (due to Herb) to pseudo-root systems.

Abstract:We give a combinatorial proof of an identity that involves Eulerian numbers and was obtained algebraically by Brenti and Welker (2009). To do so, we study alcoved triangulations of dilated hypersimplices. As a byproduct, we describe the dual graph of the triangulation in the case of the standard simplex, conjecture its structure for general hypersimplices, and prove combinatorially that the Eulerian numbers coincide with the normalized volumes of the hypersimplices.

Polynomial identities and Fermat quotients

Abstract:We prove some polynomial identities from which we deduce congruences modulo $p^2$ for the Fermat quotient $\frac{2^p-2}{p}$ for any odd prime $p$ (Proposition 1 and Theorem 1). These congruences are simpler than the one obtained by Jothilingam in 1985 which involves listing quadratic residues in some order. On the way, we also observe some more congruences for the Fermat quotient that generalize Eisenstein's classical congruence. Using such polynomial identities, we obtain some sums involving harmonic numbers. We also prove formulae for binomial sums of harmonic numbers of higher order.

Generalisations of Capparelli's and Primc's identities, I: coloured Frobenius partitions and combinatorial proofs

Abstract:In these two companion papers, we give infinite families of partition identities which generalise Primc's and Capparelli's identities, and study their consequences on the theory of crystal bases of the affine Lie algebra $A_{n-1}^{(1)}.$ In this first paper, we focus on combinatorial aspects. We give a $n^2$-coloured generalisation of Primc's identity by constructing a $n^2 \times n^2$ matrix of difference conditions, Primc's original identities corresponding to $n=2$ and $n=3$. While most coloured partition identities in the literature connect partitions with difference conditions to partitions with congruence conditions, in our case, the natural way to generalise these identities is to relate partitions with difference conditions to coloured Frobenius partitions. This gives a very simple expression for the generating function. With a particular specialisation of the colour variables, our generalisation also yields a partition identity with congruence conditions. Then, using a bijection from our new generalisation of Primc's identity, we deduce a multi-parameter family of identities on $(n^2-1)$-coloured partitions which generalise Capparelli's identity, also in terms of coloured Frobenius partitions. The particular case $n=2$ is Capparelli's identity and the case $n=3$ recovers an identity of Meurman and Primc. In the second paper, we will focus on crystal theoretic aspects. We will show that the difference conditions we defined in our $n^2$-coloured generalisation of Primc's identity are actually energy functions for certain $A_{n-1}^{(1)}$ crystals. We will then use this result to retrieve the Kac-Peterson character formula and derive a new character formula as a sum of infinite products for all the irreducible highest weight $A_{n-1}^{(1)}$-modules of level $1$.

Abstract:The Cauchy identities play an important role in the theory of symmetric functions. It is known that Cauchy sums for the $q$-Whittaker and the skew Schur polynomials produce the same factorized expressions modulo a $q$-Pochhammer symbol. We consider the sums with restrictions on the length of the first rows for labels of both polynomials and prove an identity which relates them. The proof is based on techniques from integrable probability: we rewrite the identity in terms of two probability measures: the $q$-Whittaker measure and the periodic Schur measure. The relation follows by comparing their Fredholm determinant formulas.

Abstract:A generalization of the Chu-Vandermonde convolution is presented and proved with the integral representation method. This identity can be transformed into another identity, which has as special cases two known identities. Another identity that is closely related to this identity is presented and proved. Using the modified geometric series from another paper, some closely related identities are listed. Some corresponding harmonic number identities are derived, which have as special cases some known harmonic number identities. For one combinatorial sum a recursion formula is derived and used to compute a few examples.

Abstract:We find an interesting relationship between the golden ratio, the Moebius function, the Euler totient function and the natural logarithm - central players in the theory of numbers. A number of identities involving the golden ratio and its reciprocal are proved, including an expression for the base of the natural logarithm. The theorem and corollaries highlight a connection between the golden ratio and the factorization of integers that is not obvious; and display a sort of inverse relationship between the Moebius function and Euler totient function.

Abstract:A recent paper [R22] established "Frobenius reciprocity" as a bijection $t$ between certain symplectically reduced spaces (which need not be manifolds), and conjectured: 1°) $t$ is a diffeomorphism when these spaces are endowed with their natural subquotient diffeologies, 2°) $t$ respects the reduced diffeological $2$-forms they may (or might not) carry. In this paper, we prove both this conjecture and a similar one on prequantum reduction, and also give new sufficient conditions for the reduced forms to exist. We stop short of proving that they always exist.

Polynomial Quotient Rings and Kronecker Substitution for Deriving Combinatorial Identities

Abstract:We introduce a framework for generating combinatorial identities by applying Kronecker substitution to polynomial expansions within quotient rings. We apply this methodology to derive a general formula for C-recursive integer sequences, as well as explicit formulas for certain combinatorial sequences, including the Pell numbers and central binomial coefficients. We also discover an unusual representation for the real $n$-th roots of positive integers $\sqrt[n]{a}$, characterized as the limit of a modular expression. The theorems and results presented provide a theoretical basis for future research on the interconnections between Kronecker substitution, polynomial ring expansions, and their applications in combinatorial sequences and beyond.

Abstract:The Rogers–Ramanujan identities and various analogous identities (Gordon, Andrews–Bressoud, Capparelli, etc.) form a family of very deep identities concerned with integer partitions. These identities (written in generating function form) are typically of the form “product side” equals “sum side,” with the product side enumerating partitions obeying certain congruence conditions and the sum side obeying certain initial conditions and difference conditions (along with possibly other restrictions). We use symbolic computation to generate various such sum sides and then use Euler’s algorithm to see which of them actually do produce elegant conjectured product sides. We not only rediscover many of the known identities but also discover some apparently new ones, as conjectures supported by strong mathematical evidence.

Abstract:The literature on Dedekind sums is vast. In this expository paper we show that there is a common thread to many generalizations of Dedekind sums, namely through the study of lattice point enumeration of rational polytopes. In particular, there are some natural finite Fourier series which we call Fourier-Dedekind sums, and which form the building blocks of the number of partitions of an integer from a finite set of positive integers. This problem also goes by the name of the `coin exchange problem'. Dedekind sums have enjoyed a resurgence of interest recently, from such diverse fields as topology, number theory, and combinatorial geometry. The Fourier-Dedekind sums we study here include as special cases generalized Dedekind sums studied by Berndt, Carlitz, Grosswald, Knuth, Rademacher, and Zagier. Our interest in these sums stems from the appearance of Dedekind's and Zagier's sums in lattice point count formulas for polytopes. Using some simple generating functions, we show that generalized Dedekind sums are natural ingredients for such formulas. As immediate `geometric' corollaries to our formulas, we obtain and generalize reciprocity laws of Dedekind, Zagier, and Gessel. Finally, we prove a polynomial-time complexity result for Zagier's higher-dimensional Dedekind sums.
