Abstract:The Wheeler-DeWitt equation does not describe any explicit time evolution of the wave function, and somehow related to this issue, there is no natural way of defining an invariant inner product that provides a viable probability interpretation. We show that both of these difficulties are solved in a covariant canonical formulation of general relativity where the configuration space is extended by introducing the embedding coordinates as dynamical variables. The formalism describes the evolution of the wave function from one spacelike slice to another, but as in the case of spatial diffeomorphisms this is simply implemented by a coordinate change in the wave function. We demonstrate how the time equation disappears after gauge fixing that removes the embedding coordinates. These findings indicate that the time evolution is trivial in a background independent formulation of quantum gravity.
What problem does this paper attempt to address?
This paper attempts to solve the problem of time evolution in quantum gravity. Specifically, the author explores, in the classical quantum gravity theory, the problems that the Wheeler - DeWitt (WdW) equation does not describe the explicit time evolution of the wave function and that there is a lack of an inner product for a naturally - defined probability interpretation. These problems lead to the ambiguity of the concept of time and difficulties in interpretation in quantum gravity.
### Main contributions of the paper:
1. **Extended configuration space**: By introducing embedding coordinates as dynamical variables, the classical configuration space of general relativity is extended. This extension allows a gauge analysis to be carried out in a spacetime - covariant manner, so that the evolution of the wave function from one spacelike slice to another can be described.
2. **Triviality of time evolution**: In the extended theoretical framework, time evolution is proven to be trivial, that is, the time evolution of the wave function can be achieved through coordinate transformation without the need to introduce an additional time parameter. This shows that in the background - independent quantum gravity theory, time evolution is essentially trivial.
3. **Definition of inner product**: An invariant inner product is proposed to provide an effective probability distribution over the physical degrees of freedom. This inner product remains invariant under time translation, thus solving the problem of probability interpretation.
### Specific methods and techniques:
- **Extended configuration space**: Introduce embedding coordinates \( X^\mu(y^\alpha) \), where \( y^\alpha = (\tau, y^i) \) and \( \tau \) is the internal time variable. These coordinates satisfy the conditions \( g_{\mu\nu} X'^\mu X'^\nu < 0 \) and \( \det(g_{\mu\nu} \partial_\alpha X^\mu \partial_\beta X^\nu) < 0 \).
- **Action and constraints**: Consider the following action:
\[
S = \frac{1}{2} \int d^4 y \sqrt{-\gamma} R(\gamma)
\]
where \( \gamma_{\alpha\beta} = \partial_\alpha X^\mu \partial_\beta X^\nu g_{\mu\n} \), \( \gamma = \det(\gamma_{\alpha\beta}) \), \( R(\gamma) \) is the Ricci scalar of \( \gamma_{\alpha\beta} \). The theory has two field variables \( g_{\mu\nu} \) and \( X^\mu \).
- **Gauge symmetry**: The theory has greater gauge symmetry, including the symmetries generated by the world - volume vector \( k^\alpha \) and the target - space vector \( l^\mu \).
- **Canonical analysis**: Through canonical analysis, the momentum operators \( P_\mu \) and \( P_{\mu\nu} \) are obtained, and a series of constraint conditions are derived, including the momentum constraint \( \Phi_i \) and the Hamiltonian constraint \( \Phi \).
- **Quantization**: An invariant inner product is defined through the path - integral method, ensuring the invariance of the wave function under time translation.
### Conclusion:
The paper shows that in the extended configuration space, by introducing embedding coordinates, the problems of time evolution and probability interpretation in the Wheeler - DeWitt equation can be solved. Time evolution is trivial in the background - independent quantum gravity theory, which provides a new perspective for understanding the concept of time in quantum gravity.
