Abstract:In the covariant canonical approach to classical physics, each point in phase space represents an entire classical trajectory. Initial data at a fixed time serve as coordinates for this ``timeless'' phase space, and time evolution can be viewed as a coordinate change. We argue for a similar view in quantum theory. As in the Heisenberg picture, the wave function is fundamentally time-independent. On any given time slice, however, we can diagonalize a complete set of position operators to form a basis, in which the projected wave function depends on the choice of time. In this picture, time evolution can be viewed as a basis change in what is otherwise a block universe. We argue that this may help solve the ``problem of time'' in quantum gravity, and illustrate the idea with an example from three-dimensional quantum gravity.

Abstract:A new dynamical paradigm merging quantum dynamics with cosmology is discussed. Time evolution involves a genuine passage of time, which distinguishes the formalism from those where dynamics in space is equivalent to statics in space-time. Hyperbolic spatial sections occur as asymptotic large-cosmic-time supports of quantum wave functions. For simplicity, the wave functions are defined on $n$-dimensional Minkowski spaces. We begin with empty universe, but then outline the formalism that involves matter fields. As a by-product, we arrive at a new formulation of conformal invariance of $m\neq 0$ fields.

Abstract:We investigate three aspects of the supposed problem of time: The disagreement between the treatments of time in general relativity and quantum theory, the problem of recovering time from within an isolated Universe and the prevalence of a unidirectional time flow (i.e., the so-called arrow of time). Under our interpretation, general relativity and quantum theory have complementary time treatments given that they emerge from a theory of a more fundamental nature. To model an isolated Universe, we use the Wheeler-DeWitt equation and then apply the Page-Wootters method of recovering time. It is argued that, if the recovery of an experience of time is indeed viable in this framework, interactions and quantum entanglement are both essential features, even though the former is normally an afterthought or altogether dismissed. As for the one-way arrow of time, this is, from our perspective, a consequence of including the aforementioned interactions. But underlying our interpretation, and pretty much all others, is the necessity for causality. It is this fundamental tenet which accounts for our experience of time but yet can only be postulated. Our conclusion is that the `problem of causality' is what should be the focal point of future investigations.

Abstract:The Wheeler-DeWitt equation does not describe any explicit time evolution of the wave function, and somehow related to this issue, there is no natural way of defining an invariant inner product that provides a viable probability interpretation. We show that both of these difficulties are solved in a covariant canonical formulation of general relativity where the configuration space is extended by introducing the embedding coordinates as dynamical variables. The formalism describes the evolution of the wave function from one spacelike slice to another, but as in the case of spatial diffeomorphisms this is simply implemented by a coordinate change in the wave function. We demonstrate how the time equation disappears after gauge fixing that removes the embedding coordinates. These findings indicate that the time evolution is trivial in a background independent formulation of quantum gravity.

Abstract:The question about the appearance of time in the semiclassical limit of quantum gravity continues to be discussed in the literature. It is believed that a temporal Schrodinger equation for matter fields on the background of a classical gravitational field must be true. To obtain this equation, the Born - Oppenheimer approximation for gravity is used. However, the origin of time in this equation is different in works of various authors. For example, in the papers of Kiefer and his collaborators, time is a parameter along a classical trajectory of gravitational field; in the works of Montani and his collaborators the origin of time is introducing the Kuchar - Torre reference fluid; in the extended phase space approach the origin of time is the consequence of existing of the observer in a fixed reference frame. We discuss and compare these approaches. To make the calculations transparent, we illustrate them with a model of a closed isotropic universe. In each approach, one obtains some Schrodinger equation for matter fields with quantum gravitational corrections, but the form of the equation and the corrections depend on additional assumptions which are rather arbitrary. None of the approaches can explain how time had appeared in the Early Universe, since it is supposed that classical gravity and, therefore, classical spacetime had already come into being.

Abstract:The exact solution of the Hamiltonian constraint in canonical gravity and the resultant reduction of Einstein's theory reveal the synergy between gravitation and the intrinsic cosmic clock of our expanding universe. Intrinsic Time Geometrodynamics advocates a paradigm shift from four covariances to just spatial diffeomorphism invariance. Consequently, causal time-ordering and quantum Schrodinger-Heisenberg evolution in cosmic time become meaningful. The natural addition of a Cotton-York term to the physical Hamiltonian changes the initial data problem radically. In the classical context, this is studied with the Lichnerowicz-York equation; quantum mechanically, it lends weight to the origin of the universe as an exact Chern-Simons Hartle-Hawking state, which features Euclidean-Lorentzian instanton tunneling. At the level of expectation values, this quantum state yields a low-entropy hot smooth Robertson-Walker beginning in accord with Penrose's Weyl Curvature Hypothesis. The Chern-Simons Hartle-Hawking state also manifests transverse traceless quantum metric fluctuations, with, at the lowest approximation, scale-invariant two-point correlations as one of its defining characteristics.

Two-Time Relativistic Bohmian Model of Quantum Mechanics

Abstract:Two-Time relativistic Bohmian Model (TTBM) is a theory in which the apparently paradoxical aspects of Quantum Mechanics are the effect of the existence of an extra unobservable time dimension. In this paper, the model is first rigorously and thoroughly summarized: definition, salient properties and observational explanations (double-slit experiment). Secondly, the theory is applied to a generic spherical atomic orbit, obtaining oscillations of the electron in the new time dimension, tau, that demonstrate the static nature of the orbitals. Something very similar happens in the case of a particle in box, where tau-oscillations cause the particle to spread out at steady states. Some speculations about spin and astrophysical follow. Finally, strengths and pending tasks of the model are summarized.

Abstract:The problem of time is one of the most relevant open issues in canonical quantum gravity. Although there is a huge literature about this topic, a commonly accepted solution has not been found yet. Here, we focus on the semiclassical approach to the problem of time, that has the main goal of reproducing quantum field theory on a fixed WKB background accounting also for quantum gravity corrections. We analyze the different choices of the expansion parameter and discuss the problems arising in previous proposals, where a non-unitary evolution emerges as an effect of quantum gravity corrections. In this work we develop a new approach to solve this problem by performing the WKB expansion with the introduction of the so-called kinematical action as a clock for quantum matter, that allows to recover a unitary dynamics.

Abstract:We develop an extension of Bohmian mechanics to a curved background space-time containing a singularity. The present paper focuses on timelike singularities. We use the naked timelike singularity of the super-critical Reissner-Nordstrom geometry as an example. While one could impose boundary conditions at the singularity that would prevent the particles from falling into the singularity, we are interested here in the case in which particles have positive probability to hit the singularity and get annihilated. The wish for reversibility, equivariance, and the Markov property then dictates that particles must also be created by the singularity, and indeed dictates the rate at which this must occur. That is, a stochastic law prescribes what comes out of the singularity. We specify explicit equations of a model involving an interior-boundary condition on the wave function at the singularity, which can be used also in other versions of quantum theory besides Bohmian mechanics. As the resulting theory involves particle creation and annihilation, it can be regarded as a quantum field theory, and the stochastic process for the Bohmian particles is analogous to Bell-type quantum field theories.

Abstract:Positive-energy solutions of the Klein-Gordon equation form a Hilbert space of holomorphic functions on the future tube. This domain is interpreted as an extended phase space for the associated classical particle, the extra dimensions being the time and a new variable related to the inverse equilibrium temperature in an associated canonical ensemble. This gives a compelling formulation of relativistic Bohmian mechanics where the "hidden variables" are simply the classical trajectories of the particle in phase space. Interactions may be included through "holomorphic gauge theory."

Abstract:Effects of a Bohmian type quantum-relativistic theory are explored. The model is obtained by introducing a new and independent time parameter whose relative motions are not directly observable and cause the quantum uncertainties of the physical observables. Unlike the usual de Broglie-Bohm theories, the Quantum Potential does not affect directly the observable motion but it determines that one relative to the new time variable. It turns out that the Zitterbewegung of a free particle, of which a more general law is obtained, is the key example of these hidden motions and, through it, it seems possible to give physical reality to the Feynman's paths. A relativistic revision of the uncertainty principle also derives from the theory.

The problem of time for non-deparametrizable models and quantum gravity

Abstract:In this article I introduce a distinction between two types of reparametrization invariant models and I argue that while both suffer from a problem of time at the time of applying canonical quantization methods to quantize them, its severity depends greatly on the type of model. Deparametrizable models are models that have time as a configuration or phase space variable and this makes it the case that the problem of time can be solved. In the case of non-deparametrizable models, we cannot find time in the configuration or phase space of the model, and hence the techniques that allow solving the problem in the deparametrizable case do not apply. This seems to signal that the canonical quantization techniques fail to give a satisfactory quantization of non-deparametrizable models. As I argue that general relativity is non-deparametrizable, this implies that the canonical quantization of this theory may fail to provide a successful theory of quantum gravity.

A time (anti)symmetric approach to the double solution theory

Abstract:In this work we present a new theoretical approach to interpreting and reproducing quantum mechanics using trajectory-guided wavelets. Inspired by the 1925 work of Louis de Broglie, we demonstrate that pulses composed of a difference between a retarded wave and an advanced wave (known as antisymmetric waves) are capable of following quantum trajectories predicted by de Broglie-Bohm theory (also known as Bohmian mechanics). Our theory reproduces the main results of orthodox quantum mechanics and, unlike Bohmian theory, is local in the Bell sense. We show that this is linked to the superdeterminism and past-future (anti)symmetry of our theory.

Abstract:We study the non-unitary relation between quantum gravitational models defined using different internal times. We show that despite the non-unitarity, it is possible to provide a prescription for making unambiguous, though restricted, physical predictions independent of specific clocks. To illustrate this result, we employ a model of quantum gravitational waves in a quantum Friedmann universe.

Abstract:A new Bohmian quantum-relativistic model, in which from the Klein-Gordon equation a generalization of the standard Zitterbewegung arises, is explored. It is obtained by introducing a new independent time parameter, whose relative motions are not directly observable but cause the quantum uncertainties of the observables. Unlike Bohm's original theory, the quantum potential does not affect the observable motion, as for a normal external potential, but it only determines that one relative to the new time variable, of which the Zitterbewegung of a free particle is an example. The model also involves a relativistic revision of the uncertainty principle.

Abstract:A new form of quasiclassical space-time dynamics for constrained systems reveals how quantum effects can be derived systematically from canonical quantization of gravitational systems. These quasiclassical methods lead to additional fields, representing quantum fluctuations and higher moments, that are coupled to the classical metric components. The new fields describe nonadiabatic quantum dynamics and can be interpreted as implicit formulations of nonlocal quantum corrections in a field theory. This field-theory aspect is studied here for the first time, applied to a gravitational system for which a tractable model is constructed. Static solutions for the relevant fields can be obtained in almost closed form. They reveal new properties of potential near-horizon and asymptotic effects in canonical quantum gravity and demonstrate the overall consistency of the formalism. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevD.109.024006 © 2024 American Physical Society

Abstract:Preparing general relativity for quantization in the Hamiltonian approach leads to the `problem of time,' rendering the world fundamentally timeless. One proposed solution is the `thermal time hypothesis,' which defines time in terms of states representing systems in thermal equilibrium. On this view, time is supposed to emerge thermodynamically even in a fundamentally timeless context. Here, I develop the worry that the thermal time hypothesis requires dynamics -- and hence time -- to get off the ground, thereby running into worries of circularity.

Abstract:In this review we present the problem of time in quantum physics, including a short history of the problem and the known objections about considering time a quantum observable. The need to deal with time as an observable is elaborated through some unresolved problems. The lack of a consistent theory of time is currently hindering the formulation of a full-fledged theory of quantum gravity. It is argued that the proposal set forth by several authors of considering an intrinsic measurement of quantum time, besides having the conventional external time, is compelling. Recently several suggestions have been put forward to revive the proposal of Page and Wootters (1983), elaborating and resolving some of the main ambiguities of the original proposal and opening new scope for understanding its content. The approach followed in these new contributions exposes the need to go beyond the limitations enforced by the conventional approach of quantum physics. The attitude of covariant loop quantum gravity, in which it is called to completely ignore time, is also discussed. This review could be a step forward in an endeavour to reform our outlook of the unification of the theory of relativity and quantum physics by furnishing the conceptual ground needed for this goal. Intentionally, some technical details are avoided since we aim to present the approaches to resolve the problem in a simple way with the clearest possible outlook. These can be looked up in the original references provided.

Abstract:Bohmian mechanics is the most naively obvious embedding imaginable of Schr\"odinger's equation into a completely coherent physical theory. It describes a world in which particles move in a highly non-Newtonian sort of way, one which may at first appear to have little to do with the spectrum of predictions of quantum mechanics. It turns out, however, that as a consequence of the defining dynamical equations of Bohmian mechanics, when a system has wave function $\psi$ its configuration is typically random, with probability density $\rho$ given by $|\psi|^2$, the quantum equilibrium distribution. It also turns out that the entire quantum formalism, operators as observables and all the rest, is a consequence of Bohmian mechanics.
