Abstract:The available data on elastic scattering at the LHC at large momentum transfer $t$ in the range $0.05 <|t|<1.0~\mathrm{GeV}^{2}$ have been analyzed in terms of possible oscillating structures. A clearly significant structure is seen in the data from the TOTEM collaboration at 13 TeV. Data measured by the same collaboration at 2.76~TeV, 7~TeV and 8~TeV are not statistically significant to confirm or reject the observation at~13 TeV. More data are needed to understand if the effect is real or an experimental artefact

Abstract:The ATLAS and TOTEM collaborations have measured the differential elastic cross section at centre-of mass energy $\sqrt{s}$=13 TeV and at small four-moment squared $|t|$. The data at very small $|t|$ i.e. $|t|<0.01GeV^{2}$ have been analysed in terms of so called AKM (Auberson, Kinoshita and Martin) oscillations. An indication of a possible oscillation of this type had previously been reported at $\sqrt{s}$=541 GeV using data from the UA4/2 experiment. There are no such indications in the data at 13 TeV examined here.

Abstract:Data-driving determination of the new properties of elastic scattering at small angles on the basis on all existing experimental data for $d\sigma/dt$ of $pp$ and $p\bar{p}$ at $\sqrt{s} \geq 540$ GeV allows us to obtain the main characteristics of the nonstandard terms of the elastic scattering amplitude. It was shown that the oscillation term has a different sign for $pp$ and $p\bar{p}$ reactions; hence, it is part of the Odderon amplitude. The energy dependence of the oscillation term and the term with an extremely large slope is determined. The period of the oscillation term agrees with the scaling properties predicted by the Auberson - Kinoshita - Martin (AKM) theorem. The high quality quantitative description of all data at $\sqrt{s} \geq 540$ GeV in the framework of the HEGS model supports such a phenomenon which can be connected with peripheral hadron interaction.

Abstract:Recently published and preliminary results of the TOTEM experiment are presented, emphasizing a recent discovery of a non-exponential behaviour of the differential cross-section of elastic proton-proton scattering, that TOTEM measured with an unprecedented precision at the centre-of-mass energy $\sqrt{s}$ = 8 TeV based on a high-statistics data sample obtained with the $\beta_* = 90$ m optics of CERN LHC. Both the statistical and systematic uncertainties remained below 1%, except for the t-independent contribution from the overall normalisation. This measurement allowed TOTEM to exclude a purely exponential differential cross-section in the range of four-momentum transfer squared 0.027 < |t| < 0.2 GeV$^2$ with a significance greater than 7 $\sigma$. In this context we also highlight the innovative TOTEM recalibration of LHC optics, that used elastic scattering data measured by the world's largest and most complex Roman Pot detector system, and discuss recent preliminary TOTEM data on the Coulomb-Nuclear interference region with its physics implications.

Abstract:The TOTEM collaboration has measured the elastic proton-proton differential cross section ${\rm d}\sigma/{\rm d}t$ at $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV LHC energy using dedicated $\beta^{*}=90$ m beam optics. The Roman Pot detectors were inserted to 10$\sigma$ distance from the LHC beam, which allowed the measurement of the range $[0.04$ GeV$^{2}$$; 4 $GeV$^{2}$$]$ in four-momentum transfer squared $|t|$. The efficient data acquisition allowed to collect about 10$^{9}$ elastic events to precisely measure the differential cross-section including the diffractive minimum (dip), the subsequent maximum (bump) and the large-$|t|$ tail. The average nuclear slope has been found to be $B=(20.40 \pm 0.002^{\rm stat} \pm 0.01^{\rm syst})~$GeV$^{-2}$ in the $|t|$-range $0.04~$GeV$^{2}$ to $0.2~$GeV$^{2}$. The dip position is $|t_{\rm dip}|=(0.47 \pm 0.004^{\rm stat} \pm 0.01^{\rm syst})~$GeV$^{2}$. The differential cross section ratio at the bump vs. at the dip $R=1.77\pm0.01^{\rm stat}$ has been measured with high precision. The series of TOTEM elastic pp measurements show that the dip is a permanent feature of the pp differential cross-section at the TeV scale.

Abstract:The TOTEM experiment at the CERN LHC has measured elastic proton-proton scattering at the centre-of-mass energy $\sqrt{s}$ = 8 TeV and four-momentum transfers squared, |t|, from 6 x $10^{-4}$ GeV$^2$ to 0.2 GeV$^2$. Near the lower end of the |t|-interval the differential cross-section is sensitive to the interference between the hadronic and the electromagnetic scattering amplitudes. This article presents the elastic cross-section measurement and the constraints it imposes on the functional forms of the modulus and phase of the hadronic elastic amplitude. The data exclude the traditional Simplified West and Yennie interference formula that requires a constant phase and a purely exponential modulus of the hadronic amplitude. For parametrisations of the hadronic modulus with second- or third-order polynomials in the exponent, the data are compatible with hadronic phase functions giving either central or peripheral behaviour in the impact parameter picture of elastic scattering. In both cases, the $\rho$-parameter is found to be 0.12 $\pm$ 0.03. The results for the total hadronic cross-section are $\sigma_{tot}$ = (102.9 $\pm$ 2.3) mb and (103.0 $\pm$ 2.3) mb for central and peripheral phase formulations, respectively. Both are consistent with previous TOTEM measurements.

Abstract:The recent measurements of the elastic cross section by the TOTEM Collaboration together with the first estimations of the inelastic cross sections by other LHC detectors are used to test the simplest version of the geometrical model of the proton-proton scattering. We show that the description found for lower energy data, with the modest adjustment of the model parameter extrapolation, could be, in principle, used to describe the LHC measurement and to predict the cross sections in very high energy cosmic ray domain. However, the shape of the first elastic dip in the elastic differential scattering cross section suggests that ratio of the real to the imaginary part of the elastic amplitude is falling rather fast and the analysis of the elastic cross section fraction suggests that the geometrical picture of the proton-proton collision should be modified considerably when entering the ultra high-energy domain.

Model-independent Odderon results based on TOTEM data on elastic proton-proton scattering at 8 TeV

Abstract:We complete the model-independent analysis of the scaling properties of the differential cross section of elastic proton-proton cross sections, including new TOTEM data published in 2022 at $\sqrt{s} = 8$ TeV. We separate the signal and the background region with a new gating method. In the signal region, we find that the statistical significance of Odderon exchange from the combined 7.0 and 8.0 TeV $pp$ data of TOTEM and the 1.96 TeV $p\bar{p}$ data of D0 is at least 7.32$\sigma$. In the background region, the scaling functions of elastic proton-proton data at 7 and 8 TeV and that of elastic proton-antiproton scattering data at 1.96 TeV agree with a statistical significance not larger than 1.93$\sigma$.

Abstract:We study the scaling properties of the differential cross section of elastic proton-proton ($pp$) and proton-antiproton ($p\bar p$) collisions at high energies. We introduce a new scaling function, that scales -- within the experimental errors -- all the ISR data on elastic $pp$ scattering from $\sqrt{s} = 23.5$ to $62.5$ GeV to the same universal curve. We explore the scaling properties of the differential cross-sections of the elastic $pp$ and $p\bar p$ collisions in a limited TeV energy range. Rescaling the TOTEM $pp$ data from $\sqrt{s} = 7$ TeV to $2.76$ and $1.96$ TeV, and comparing it to D0 $p\bar p$ data at $1.96$ TeV, our results provide an evidence for a $t$-channel Odderon exchange at TeV energies, with a significance of at least 6.26$\sigma$. We complete this work with a model-dependent evaluation of the domain of validity of the new scaling and its violations. We find that the $H(x)$ scaling is valid, model dependently, within $200$ GeV $ \leq \sqrt{s} \leq$ $ 8$ TeV, with a $-t$ range gradually narrowing with decreasing colliding energies.

Abstract:The TOTEM 2.76, 7, 8, and 13 TeV pp elastic differential cross sections are extrapolated using a data-driven approach to obtain the 1.96 TeV pp elastic cross section. A difference with a 3.4$\sigma$ significance is observed between the extrapolated pp elastic cross section and the D0 p$\bar{\rm p}$ elastic cross section at 1.96 TeV in the region of the diffractive minimum and the second maximum of the pp cross section, providing evidence for colourless C-odd gluonic exchanges, also denoted as odderon. These results are combined with a TOTEM analysis of the same $t$-channel C-odd exchanges based on forward pp elastic scattering at TeV scale. The combined significance is larger than 5$\sigma$ and is interpreted as the first observation of odderon exchange.

Abstract:We discuss the profile of the impact--parameter dependent elastic scattering amplitude. Extraction of impact-parameter dependence from the dataset with inclusion of the experimental data on elastic scattering at the LHC energies helps to reveal the asymptotics of hadron interactions. Analysis of the data clearly indicates that the impact-parameter elastic scattering amplitude exceed the black disk limit at the LHC energy 7TeV and the inelastic overlap function reaches its maximum value at $b>0$

Abstract:Evaluating the H(x, s; pp) scaling function of elastic proton-proton (pp) collisions from recent TOTEM data at sqrt(s) = 8 TeV and comparing it with the same function of elastic proton-antiproton (pp-) data of the D0 collaboration at sqrt(s) = 1.96 TeV, we find, from this comparison alone, an at least 3.79 sigma {\signal} of Odderon exchange. If we combine this model independently obtained result with that of a similar analysis but using TOTEM elastic pp scattering data at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV, which resulted in an at least 6.26 {\sigma} signal, the combined significance of Odderon exchange increases to at least 7.08 {\sigma}, model independently. Observation of Odderon Effects at LHC energies -- A Real Extended Bialas-Bzdak Model Study

Abstract:The unitarily extended Bialas-Bzdak model of elastic proton-proton scattering is applied, without modifications, to describe the differential cross-section of elastic proton-antiproton collisions in the TeV energy range, and to extrapolate these differential cross-sections to LHC energies. In this model-dependent study we find that the differential cross-sections of elastic proton-proton collision data at 2.76 and 7 TeV energies differ significantly from the differential cross-section of elastic proton-antiproton collisions extrapolated to these energies. The elastic proton-proton differential cross-sections, extrapolated to 1.96 TeV energy with the help of this extended Bialas-Bzdak model do not differ significantly from that of elastic proton-antiproton collisions, within the theoretical errors of the extrapolation. Taken together these results provide a model-dependent, but statistically significant evidence for a crossing-odd component of the elastic scattering amplitude at the at least 7.08 sigma level. From the reconstructed Odderon and Pomeron amplitudes, we determine the $\sqrt{s}$ dependence of the corresponding total and differential cross-sections.

Abstract:We present a formalism for high energy soft processes, mediated by Pomerons, which embodies pion-loop insertions in the Pomeron trajectory, rescattering effects via a two-channel eikonal and high-mass diffractive dissociation. It describes all the main features of the data throughout the ISR to Tevatron energy interval. We give predictions for soft diffractive phenomena at the LHC energy, and we calculate the different survival probabilities of rapidity gaps which occur in various diffractive processes.

Unitarity effects in elastic scattering at the LHC

Abstract:We study the high-energy behavior of the elastic scattering amplitude using two distinct unitarization schemes: the eikonal and the $U$-matrix. Our analysis begins with a formalism involving solely Pomerons, incorporating pion-loop insertions in the Pomeron trajectory representing the nearest singularity generated by $t$-channel unitarity. Subsequently, we explore a scenario that includes the presence of an Odderon. In our analyses, we explore the tension between the TOTEM and the ATLAS measurements for $\sigma_{tot}$ and $d\sigma/dt$ at 7, 8, and 13 TeV, and the subsequent implications for the properties of both the Pomeron and Odderon. Our results show that the Odderon phase factor $\xi_{\Bbb O}= -1$ is favored in both unitarization schemes, supporting an Odderon with a phase opposite to that of other crossing-odd components of the scattering amplitude. More interestingly, this specific phase factor stands as the sole one that aligns with results consistent with a non-zero Odderon coupling.
