Abstract:A separation of a graph $G$ is a partition $(A_1, A_2, C)$ of $V(G)$ such that $A_1$ is anticomplete to $A_2$. A classic result from Robertson and Seymour's Graph Minors Project states that there is a correspondence between tree decompositions and laminar collections of separations. A many-sided separation of a graph $G$ is a partition $(A_1, \ldots, A_k, C)$ of $V(G)$ such that $A_i$ is anticomplete to $A_j$ for all $1 \leq i < j \leq k$. In this note, we show a correspondence between tree decompositions with a certain parity property, called deciduous tree decompositions, and laminar collections of many-sided separations.

Abstract:While finite graphs have tree-decompositions that efficiently distinguish all their tangles, locally finite graphs with thick ends need not have such tree-decompositions. We show that every locally finite graph without thick ends admits such a tree-decomposition, in fact a canonical one. Our proof exhibits a thick end at any obstruction to the existence of such tree-decompositions and builds on new methods for the analysis of the limit behaviour of strictly increasing sequences of separations.

Abstract:When does a graph admit a tree-decomposition in which every bag has small diameter? For finite graphs, this is a property of interest in algorithmic graph theory, where it is called having bounded "tree-length". We will show that this is equivalent to being "boundedly quasi-isometric to a tree", which for infinite graphs is a much-studied property from metric geometry. One object of this paper is to tie these two areas together. We will prove that there is a tree-decomposition in which each bag has small diameter, if and only if there is a map from V ( G ) into the vertex set of a tree T , such that for all , the distances differ by at most a constant. A necessary condition for admitting such a tree-decomposition is that there is no long geodesic cycle, and for graphs of bounded tree-width, Diestel and Müller showed that this is also sufficient. But it is not sufficient in general, even qualitatively, because there are graphs in which every geodesic cycle has length at most three, and yet every tree-decomposition has a bag with large diameter. There is a more general necessary condition, however. A "geodesic loaded cycle" in G is a pair ( C , F ), where C is a cycle of G and , such that for every pair u , v of vertices of C , one of the paths of C between u , v contains at most F -edges, where is the distance between u , v in G . We will show that a (possibly infinite) graph G admits a tree-decomposition in which every bag has small diameter, if and only if | F | is small for every geodesic loaded cycle ( C , F ). Our proof is an extension of an algorithm to approximate tree-length in finite graphs by Dourisboure and Gavoille. In metric geometry, there is a similar theorem that characterizes when a graph is quasi-isometric to a tree, "Manning's bottleneck criterion". The goal of this paper is to tie all these concepts together, and add a few more related ideas. For instance, we prove a conjecture of Rose McCarty, that G admits a tree-decomposition in which every bag has small diameter, if and only if for all vertices u , v , w of G , some ball of small radius meets every path joining two of u , v , w .

Abstract:The Tree Decomposition Conjecture by Barát and Thomassen states that for every tree $T$ there exists a natural number $k(T)$ such that the following holds: If $G$ is a $k(T)$-edge-connected simple graph with size divisible by the size of $T$, then $G$ can be edge-decomposed into subgraphs isomorphic to $T$. So far this conjecture has only been verified for paths, stars, and a family of bistars. We prove a weaker version of the Tree Decomposition Conjecture, where we require the subgraphs in the decomposition to be isomorphic to graphs that can be obtained from $T$ by vertex-identifications. We call such a subgraph a homomorphic copy of $T$. This implies the Tree Decomposition Conjecture under the additional constraint that the girth of $G$ is greater than the diameter of $T$. As an application, we verify the Tree Decomposition Conjecture for all trees of diameter at most 4.

A structural duality for path-decompositions into parts of small radius

Abstract:Given an arbitrary class $\mathcal{H}$ of graphs, we investigate which graphs admit a decomposition modelled on a graph in $\mathcal{H}$ into parts of small radius. The $\mathcal{H}$-decompositions that we consider here generalise the notion of tree-decompositions. We identify obstructions to such $\mathcal{H}$-decompositions of small radial width, and we prove that these obstructions occur in every graph of sufficiently large radial $\mathcal{H}$-width for the classes $\mathcal{H}$ of paths, of cycles and of subdivided stars.

Canonical graph decompositions via coverings

Abstract:We present a canonical way to decompose finite graphs into highly connected local parts. The decomposition depends only on an integer parameter whose choice sets the intended degree of locality. The global structure of the graph, as determined by the relative position of these parts, is described by a coarser $\it model$. This is a simpler graph determined entirely by the decomposition, not imposed. The model and decomposition are obtained as projections of the tangle-tree structure of a covering of the given graph that reflects its local structure while unfolding its global structure. In this way, the tangle theory from graph minors is brought to bear canonically on arbitrary graphs, which need not be tree-like. Our theorem extends to locally finite quasi-transitive graphs, and in particular to locally finite Cayley graphs. It thereby offers a canonical decomposition for finitely generated groups into local parts, whose relative structure is displayed by a graph.

Abstract:We study edge-decompositions of highly connected graphs into copies of a given tree. In particular we attack the following conjecture by Barát and Thomassen: for each tree $T$, there exists a natural number $k_T$ such that if $G$ is a $k_T$-edge-connected graph, and $|E(T)|$ divides $|E(G)|$, then $E(G)$ has a decomposition into copies of $T$. As one of our main results it is sufficient to prove the conjecture for bipartite graphs. Let $Y$ be the unique tree with degree sequence $(1,1,1,2,3)$. We prove that if $G$ is a 191-edge-connected graph of size divisible by 4, then $G$ has a $Y$-decomposition. This is the first instance of such a theorem, in which the tree is different from a path or a star.

Abstract:We present a systematic investigation into how tree-decompositions of finite adhesion capture topological properties of the space formed by a graph together with its ends. As main results, we characterise when the ends of a graph can be distinguished, and characterise which subsets of ends can be displayed by a tree-decomposition of finite adhesion. In particular, we show that a subset $\Psi$ of the ends of a graph $G$ can be displayed by a tree-decomposition of finite adhesion if and only if $\Psi$ is $G_\delta$ (a countable intersection of open sets) in $|G|$, the topological space formed by a graph together with its ends. Since the undominated ends of a graph are easily seen to be $G_\delta$, this provides a structural explanation for Carmesin's result that the set of undominated ends can always be displayed.

Abstract:One perspective on tree decompositions is that they display (low-order) separations of the underlying graph or matroid. The separations displayed by a tree decomposition are necessarily nested. In 2013, Clark and Whittle proved the existence of tree decompositions with flowers added in which, up to a natural equivalence, all low-order separations are displayed. An important step in that proof is to show that flowers can be extended to maximal flowers. In this paper we generalise the notion of a flower to pseudoflowers in graph-like spaces and show for our generalisation, flowers can be extended to maximal flowers.

Abstract:In 1996, Bodlaender showed the celebrated result that an optimal tree decomposition of a graph of bounded treewidth can be found in linear time. The algorithm is based on an algorithm of Bodlaender and Kloks that computes an optimal tree decomposition given a non-optimal tree decomposition of bounded width. Both algorithms, in particular the second, are hardly accessible. In our review, we present them in a much simpler way than the original presentations. In our description of the second algorithm, we start by explaining how all tree decompositions of subtrees defined by the nodes of the given tree decomposition can be enumerated. We group tree decompositions into equivalence classes depending on the current node of the given tree decomposition, such that it suffices to enumerate one tree decomposition per equivalence class and, for each node of the given tree decomposition, there are only a constant number of classes which can be represented in constant space. Our description of the first algorithm further simplifies Perkovic and Reed's simplification.

Abstract:In this paper, we show that every $O(m)$-edge-connected simple graph $G$ of size divisible by $m$ with minimum degree at least $2^{O(m)}$ has an edge-decomposition into isomorphic copies of any given tree $T$ of size $m$. Moreover, the minimum degree condition can be dropped for graphs $G$ with girth greater than the diameter of $T$. These results improve two results due to Bensmail, Harutyunyan, Le, Merker, and Thomassé (2017) and Merker (2017) who gave a factorial upper bound on the necessary edge-connectivity.

Abstract:The component size of a graph is the maximum number of edges in any connected component of the graph. Given a graph $G$ and two integers $k$ and $c$, $(k,c)$-Decomposition is the problem of deciding whether $G$ admits an edge partition into $k$ subgraphs with component size at most $c$. We prove that for any fixed $k \ge 2$ and $c \ge 2$, $(k,c)$-Decomposition is NP-complete in bipartite graphs. Also, when both $k$ and $c$ are part of the input, $(k,c)$-Decomposition is NP-complete even in trees. Moreover, $(k,c)$-Decomposition in trees is W[1]-hard with parameter $k$, and is FPT with parameter $c$. In addition, we present approximation algorithms for decomposing a tree either into the minimum number of subgraphs with component size at most $c$, or into $k$ subgraphs minimizing the maximum component size. En route to these results, we also obtain a fixed-parameter algorithm for Bin Packing with the bin capacity as parameter.

Abstract:The tree of decomposition of a $k$-connected graph by a set $\mathfrak S$ of pairwise independent $k$-vertex cutsets is defined as follows. The vertices of this tree are cutsets of $\mathfrak S$ and parts of decomposition of the graph by the set $\mathfrak S$, each cutset is adjacent to all parts that contain it. We prove, that the graph described above is a tree. The tree of decomposition of a biconnected graph is a particular case of this construction: it is the tree of decomposition of a biconnected graph by the set of all its single cutsets (i.e. 2-vertex cutsets, that are independent with all other 2-vertex cutsets). We show that this tree has much in common with the classic tree of blocks and cutpoints of a connected graph. With the help of the tree of decomposition of a biconnected graph we prove a planarity criterium and find some upper bounds on the chromatic number of this graph. Finally, we study the structure of critical biconnected graphs and prove that each such graph has at least four vertices of degree 2.

Abstract:This paper explores the structure of graphs defined by an excluded minor or an excluded odd minor through the lens of graph products and tree-decompositions. We prove that every graph excluding a fixed odd minor is contained in the strong product of two graphs each with bounded treewidth. For graphs excluding a fixed minor, we strengthen the result by showing that every such graph is contained in the strong product of two digraphs with bounded indegree and with bounded treewidth. This result has the advantage that the product now has bounded degeneracy. In the setting of 3-term products, we show that every $K_t$-minor-free graph is contained in $H_1\boxtimes H_2 \boxtimes K_{c(t)}$ where $\text{tw}(H_i)\leq t-2$. This treewidth bound is close to tight: in any such result with $\text{tw}(H_i)$ bounded, both $H_1$ and $H_2$ can be forced to contain any graph of treewidth $t-5$, implying $\text{tw}(H_1)\geq t-5$ and $\text{tw}(H_2)\geq t-5$. Analogous lower and upper bounds are shown for any excluded minor, where the minimum possible bound on $\text{tw}(H_i)$ is tied to the treedepth of the excluded minor. Subgraphs of the product of two graphs with bounded treewidth have two tree-decompositions where any bag from the first decomposition intersects any bag from the second decomposition in a bounded number, $k$, of vertices, so called $k$-orthogonal tree-decompositions. We show that graphs excluding a fixed odd-minor have a tree-decomposition and a path-decomposition that are $O(1)$-orthogonal. This implies that such graphs have a tree-decomposition in which each bag has bounded pathwidth. This result is best possible in that `pathwidth' cannot be replaced by `bandwidth' or `treedepth'. Moreover, we characterize the minor-closed classes that have a tree-decomposition in which each bag has bounded bandwidth, or each bag has bounded treedepth.

Abstract:This paper studies the structure of graphs with given tree-width and excluding a fixed complete bipartite subgraph, which generalises the bounded degree setting. We give a new structural description of such graphs in terms of so-called quasi-tree-partitions. We demonstrate the utility of this result through applications to (fractional) clustered colouring. Further generalisations of these structural and colouring results are presented.
