Abstract:We present a systematic investigation into how tree-decompositions of finite adhesion capture topological properties of the space formed by a graph together with its ends. As main results, we characterise when the ends of a graph can be distinguished, and characterise which subsets of ends can be displayed by a tree-decomposition of finite adhesion. In particular, we show that a subset $\Psi$ of the ends of a graph $G$ can be displayed by a tree-decomposition of finite adhesion if and only if $\Psi$ is $G_\delta$ (a countable intersection of open sets) in $|G|$, the topological space formed by a graph together with its ends. Since the undominated ends of a graph are easily seen to be $G_\delta$, this provides a structural explanation for Carmesin's result that the set of undominated ends can always be displayed.

Abstract:When does a graph admit a tree-decomposition in which every bag has small diameter? For finite graphs, this is a property of interest in algorithmic graph theory, where it is called having bounded "tree-length". We will show that this is equivalent to being "boundedly quasi-isometric to a tree", which for infinite graphs is a much-studied property from metric geometry. One object of this paper is to tie these two areas together. We will prove that there is a tree-decomposition in which each bag has small diameter, if and only if there is a map from V ( G ) into the vertex set of a tree T , such that for all , the distances differ by at most a constant. A necessary condition for admitting such a tree-decomposition is that there is no long geodesic cycle, and for graphs of bounded tree-width, Diestel and Müller showed that this is also sufficient. But it is not sufficient in general, even qualitatively, because there are graphs in which every geodesic cycle has length at most three, and yet every tree-decomposition has a bag with large diameter. There is a more general necessary condition, however. A "geodesic loaded cycle" in G is a pair ( C , F ), where C is a cycle of G and , such that for every pair u , v of vertices of C , one of the paths of C between u , v contains at most F -edges, where is the distance between u , v in G . We will show that a (possibly infinite) graph G admits a tree-decomposition in which every bag has small diameter, if and only if | F | is small for every geodesic loaded cycle ( C , F ). Our proof is an extension of an algorithm to approximate tree-length in finite graphs by Dourisboure and Gavoille. In metric geometry, there is a similar theorem that characterizes when a graph is quasi-isometric to a tree, "Manning's bottleneck criterion". The goal of this paper is to tie all these concepts together, and add a few more related ideas. For instance, we prove a conjecture of Rose McCarty, that G admits a tree-decomposition in which every bag has small diameter, if and only if for all vertices u , v , w of G , some ball of small radius meets every path joining two of u , v , w .

A representation theorem for end spaces of infinite graphs

Abstract:End-spaces of infinite graphs naturally generalise the Freudenthal boundary and sit at the interface between graph theory, geometric group theory and topology. Our main result is that every end-space can topologically be represented by a special order tree. Our main proof ingredient is a structure theorem that we introduce, which carves out the order-tree-like structure of any graph in such a way that there is a natural bijection between the ends of the graph and the limit-type down-closed chains of the order-tree.

Decomposing highly edge-connected graphs into homomorphic copies of a fixed tree

Abstract:The Tree Decomposition Conjecture by Barát and Thomassen states that for every tree $T$ there exists a natural number $k(T)$ such that the following holds: If $G$ is a $k(T)$-edge-connected simple graph with size divisible by the size of $T$, then $G$ can be edge-decomposed into subgraphs isomorphic to $T$. So far this conjecture has only been verified for paths, stars, and a family of bistars. We prove a weaker version of the Tree Decomposition Conjecture, where we require the subgraphs in the decomposition to be isomorphic to graphs that can be obtained from $T$ by vertex-identifications. We call such a subgraph a homomorphic copy of $T$. This implies the Tree Decomposition Conjecture under the additional constraint that the girth of $G$ is greater than the diameter of $T$. As an application, we verify the Tree Decomposition Conjecture for all trees of diameter at most 4.

Efficiently distinguishing all tangles in locally finite graphs

Abstract:While finite graphs have tree-decompositions that efficiently distinguish all their tangles, locally finite graphs with thick ends need not have such tree-decompositions. We show that every locally finite graph without thick ends admits such a tree-decomposition, in fact a canonical one. Our proof exhibits a thick end at any obstruction to the existence of such tree-decompositions and builds on new methods for the analysis of the limit behaviour of strictly increasing sequences of separations.

Abstract:We study edge-decompositions of highly connected graphs into copies of a given tree. In particular we attack the following conjecture by Barát and Thomassen: for each tree $T$, there exists a natural number $k_T$ such that if $G$ is a $k_T$-edge-connected graph, and $|E(T)|$ divides $|E(G)|$, then $E(G)$ has a decomposition into copies of $T$. As one of our main results it is sufficient to prove the conjecture for bipartite graphs. Let $Y$ be the unique tree with degree sequence $(1,1,1,2,3)$. We prove that if $G$ is a 191-edge-connected graph of size divisible by 4, then $G$ has a $Y$-decomposition. This is the first instance of such a theorem, in which the tree is different from a path or a star.

Abstract:A separation of a graph $G$ is a partition $(A_1, A_2, C)$ of $V(G)$ such that $A_1$ is anticomplete to $A_2$. A classic result from Robertson and Seymour's Graph Minors Project states that there is a correspondence between tree decompositions and laminar collections of separations. A many-sided separation of a graph $G$ is a partition $(A_1, \ldots, A_k, C)$ of $V(G)$ such that $A_i$ is anticomplete to $A_j$ for all $1 \leq i < j \leq k$. In this note, we show a correspondence between tree decompositions with a certain parity property, called deciduous tree decompositions, and laminar collections of many-sided separations.

Abstract:Two graphs are of the same topological type if they can be mutually embedded into each other topologically. We show that there are exactly distinct topological types of countable trees. In general, for any infinite cardinal there are exactly distinct topological types of trees of size . This solves a problem of van der Holst from 2005.

Abstract:One perspective on tree decompositions is that they display (low-order) separations of the underlying graph or matroid. The separations displayed by a tree decomposition are necessarily nested. In 2013, Clark and Whittle proved the existence of tree decompositions with flowers added in which, up to a natural equivalence, all low-order separations are displayed. An important step in that proof is to show that flowers can be extended to maximal flowers. In this paper we generalise the notion of a flower to pseudoflowers in graph-like spaces and show for our generalisation, flowers can be extended to maximal flowers.

Abstract:We prove that if $ T $ is a semi-special tree that is not special, then there exists a graph $ G $, formed as an inflation of a sparse $ T $-graph, such that for any special tree $ S $, $ G $ is not a subdivision of an inflation of an sparse $ S $-graph. Furthermore $G$ has an end of uncountable degree that has no ray graph. This result provides a consistent negative answer to a problem posed by Stefan Geschke et al. in 2023. Additionally, we introduce and explore a property that generalizes Halin's grid theorem, extending it to ends of degree $ \aleph_1 $, which was originally established for ends of countable degree.

Abstract:We prove that every tree on $n$ edges decomposes $K_{nx,nx}$ and $K_{2nx + 1}$ for all positive integers $x$. The said decompositions are obtained by proving that every tree admits a $\vec{\beta}$-labeling (oriented beta-labeling). Our proof employs the polynomial method by identifying trees as functions in the transformation monoid $\mathbb{Z}_n^{\mathbb{Z}_n}$. A proof of the graceful tree conjecture (1967) follows as an immediate consequence of the current result. Finally, we introduce additional algebraic properties derived from the decomposition results.

Canonical graph decompositions via coverings

Abstract:We present a canonical way to decompose finite graphs into highly connected local parts. The decomposition depends only on an integer parameter whose choice sets the intended degree of locality. The global structure of the graph, as determined by the relative position of these parts, is described by a coarser $\it model$. This is a simpler graph determined entirely by the decomposition, not imposed. The model and decomposition are obtained as projections of the tangle-tree structure of a covering of the given graph that reflects its local structure while unfolding its global structure. In this way, the tangle theory from graph minors is brought to bear canonically on arbitrary graphs, which need not be tree-like. Our theorem extends to locally finite quasi-transitive graphs, and in particular to locally finite Cayley graphs. It thereby offers a canonical decomposition for finitely generated groups into local parts, whose relative structure is displayed by a graph.

Abstract:The tree of decomposition of a $k$-connected graph by a set $\mathfrak S$ of pairwise independent $k$-vertex cutsets is defined as follows. The vertices of this tree are cutsets of $\mathfrak S$ and parts of decomposition of the graph by the set $\mathfrak S$, each cutset is adjacent to all parts that contain it. We prove, that the graph described above is a tree. The tree of decomposition of a biconnected graph is a particular case of this construction: it is the tree of decomposition of a biconnected graph by the set of all its single cutsets (i.e. 2-vertex cutsets, that are independent with all other 2-vertex cutsets). We show that this tree has much in common with the classic tree of blocks and cutpoints of a connected graph. With the help of the tree of decomposition of a biconnected graph we prove a planarity criterium and find some upper bounds on the chromatic number of this graph. Finally, we study the structure of critical biconnected graphs and prove that each such graph has at least four vertices of degree 2.

Abstract:Kriz and Thomas showed that every (finite or infinite) graph of tree-width $k \in \mathbb{N}$ admits a lean tree-decomposition of width $k$. We discuss a number of counterexamples demonstrating the limits of possible generalisations of their result to arbitrary infinite tree-width.

Pushing Tree Decompositions Forward Along Graph Homomorphisms

Abstract:It is folklore that tree-width is monotone under taking subgraphs (i.e. injective graph homomorphisms) and contractions (certain kinds of surjective graph homomorphisms). However, although tree-width is obviously not monotone under any surjective graph homomorphism, it is not clear whether contractions are canonically the only class of surjections with respect to which it is monotone. We prove that this is indeed the case: we show that - up to isomorphism - contractions are the only surjective graph homomorphisms that preserve tree decompositions and the shape of the decomposition tree. Furthermore, our results provide a framework for answering questions of this sort for many other kinds of combinatorial data structures (such as directed multigraphs, hypergraphs, Petri nets, circular port graphs, half-edge graphs, databases, simplicial complexes etc.) for which natural analogues of tree decompositions can be defined.

Abstract:We investigate path-, ray- and branch spaces of trees, certain topological spaces naturally associated with order theoretic trees, and provide topological characterisations for these spaces in terms of the existence of certain kinds of (sub-)bases. Our results yield a solution to a problem due to Diestel from 1992, by establishing the following equivalences for any Hausdorff space $X$: (1) $X$ is homeomorphic to the end space of a graph, (2) $X$ is homeomorphic to the ray space of a special order tree, (3) $X$ admits a nested clopen subbase that is noetherian, hereditarily complete and $\sigma$-disjoint.

Topological Drawings meet Classical Theorems from Convex Geometry

Abstract:In this article we discuss classical theorems from Convex Geometry in the context of topological drawings and beyond. In a simple topological drawing of the complete graph $K_n$, any two edges share at most one point: either a common vertex or a point where they cross. Triangles of simple topological drawings can be viewed as convex sets. This gives a link to convex geometry. As our main result, we present a generalization of Kirchberger's Theorem that is of purely combinatorial nature. It turned out that this classical theorem also applies to "generalized signotopes" - a combinatorial generalization of simple topological drawings, which we introduce and investigate in the course of this article. As indicated by the name they are a generalization of signotopes, a structure studied in the context of encodings for arrangements of pseudolines. We also present a family of simple topological drawings with arbitrarily large Helly number, and a new proof of a topological generalization of Carathéodory's Theorem in the plane and discuss further classical theorems from Convex Geometry in the context of simple topological drawings.
