Abstract:Knopfmacher et all [1] was introduced the graph compositions` notion. In this note we add to these a new construction of tree-like graphs where nodes are graphs themselves. The first examples of these tree-like compositions, a corresponding theorem and resulting conclusions are provided.

Abstract:This article studies sums over all compositions of an integer. We derive a generating function for this quantity, and apply it to several special functions, including various generalized Bernoulli numbers. We connect composition sums with a recursive tree introduced by S.G. Woon and extended by P. Fuchs under the name "general PI tree", in which an output sequence $\{x_n\}$ is associated to the input sequence $\{g_n\}$ by summing over each row of the tree built from $\{g_n\}$. Our link with the notion of compositions allows to introduce a modification of Fuchs' tree that takes into account nonlinear transforms of the generating function of the input sequence. We also introduce the notion of \textit{generalized sums over compositions}, where we look at composition sums over each part of a composition.

Abstract:We prove that the existence of a non-special tree of size is equivalent to the existence of an uncountably chromatic graph with no minor of size , establishing a connection between the special tree number and the uncountable Hadwiger conjecture. Also characterizations of Aronszajn, Kurepa and Suslin trees using graphs are deduced. A new generalized notion of connectedness for graphs is introduced using which we are able to characterize weakly compact cardinals.

Canonical graph decompositions via coverings

Abstract:We present a canonical way to decompose finite graphs into highly connected local parts. The decomposition depends only on an integer parameter whose choice sets the intended degree of locality. The global structure of the graph, as determined by the relative position of these parts, is described by a coarser $\it model$. This is a simpler graph determined entirely by the decomposition, not imposed. The model and decomposition are obtained as projections of the tangle-tree structure of a covering of the given graph that reflects its local structure while unfolding its global structure. In this way, the tangle theory from graph minors is brought to bear canonically on arbitrary graphs, which need not be tree-like. Our theorem extends to locally finite quasi-transitive graphs, and in particular to locally finite Cayley graphs. It thereby offers a canonical decomposition for finitely generated groups into local parts, whose relative structure is displayed by a graph.

Structured Decompositions: Structural and Algorithmic Compositionality

Abstract:We introduce structured decompositions. These are category-theoretic data structures which simlutaneously generalize notions from graph theory (including tree-width, layered tree-width, co-tree-width and graph decomposition width) geometric group theory (specifically Bass-Serre theory) and dynamical systems (e.g. hybrid dynamical systems). Furthermore, structured decompositions allow us to generalize these aforementioned combinatorial invariants, which have played a central role in the study of structural and algorithmic compositionality in both graph theory and parameterized complexity, to new settings. For example, in any category with enough colimits they describe algorithmically useful structural compositionality: as an application of our theory we prove an algorithmic meta-theorem for the Sub_P-composition problem. In concrete terms, when instantiated in the category of graphs, this meta-theorem yields compositional algorithms for NP-hard problems such as: Maximum Bipartite Subgraph, Maximum Planar Subgraph and Longest Path.

Pushing Tree Decompositions Forward Along Graph Homomorphisms

Abstract:It is folklore that tree-width is monotone under taking subgraphs (i.e. injective graph homomorphisms) and contractions (certain kinds of surjective graph homomorphisms). However, although tree-width is obviously not monotone under any surjective graph homomorphism, it is not clear whether contractions are canonically the only class of surjections with respect to which it is monotone. We prove that this is indeed the case: we show that - up to isomorphism - contractions are the only surjective graph homomorphisms that preserve tree decompositions and the shape of the decomposition tree. Furthermore, our results provide a framework for answering questions of this sort for many other kinds of combinatorial data structures (such as directed multigraphs, hypergraphs, Petri nets, circular port graphs, half-edge graphs, databases, simplicial complexes etc.) for which natural analogues of tree decompositions can be defined.

Abstract:Cuntz and Kühne introduced the class of connected subgraph arrangements $A_G$, depending on a graph $G$, and classified all graphs $G$ such that the corresponding arrangement $A_G$ is free. We extend their result to the multiarrangement case and classify all graphs $G$ for which the corresponding arrangement $A_G$ supports some multiplicity $\mu$ such that the multiarrangement $(A_G,\mu)$ is free.

A Study On The Graph Formulation Of Union Closed Conjecture

Abstract:The Union Closed Conjecture, posed by Peter Frankl in 1979, is one of the most renowned problems in Combinatorics. Its appeal stems from the simplicity of its statement and the potential complexity of its solution. The conjecture asserts that in any union-closed family of sets, there exists an element that belongs to at least half of the sets in the family. This paper explores the graph-theoretic formulation of the conjecture and establishes connections between the set-based and graph-based formulations. Through this connection, we derive new results and provide proofs for specific classes of graphs. Additionally, by analyzing the distribution of pendant vertices within various graphs, we demonstrate the validity of the conjecture for a broader range of graph classes.

Algebraic Structures on Graphs Joined by Edges

Abstract:Let the join of two graphs be the union of two disjoint graphs connected by $j$ edges in a one-to-one manner. In previous work by Gyurov and Pinzon, which generalized the work of Badura and Rara, the determinant of the two joined graphs was decomposed to sums of determinants of these graphs with vertex deletions or directed graph handles. In this paper, we define a homomorphism from a quotient of graphs with the join operation to the monoid of integer matrices. We find the necessary and sufficient properties of a graph so that joining to any another graph will not change its determinant. We also demonstrate through examples that this decomposition allows us to more easily calculate determinants of chains of joined graphs. This paper begins the process of finding the algebraic structure of the monoid.

Tree-layout based graph classes: proper chordal graphs

Abstract:Many standard graph classes are known to be characterized by means of layouts (a permutation of its vertices) excluding some patterns. Important such graph classes are among others: proper interval graphs, interval graphs, chordal graphs, permutation graphs, (co-)comparability graphs. For example, a graph $G=(V,E)$ is a proper interval graph if and only if $G$ has a layout $L$ such that for every triple of vertices such that $x\prec_L y\prec_L z$, if $xz\in E$, then $xy\in E$ and $yz\in E$. Such a triple $x$, $y$, $z$ is called an indifference triple and layouts excluding indifference triples are known as indifference layouts. In this paper, we investigate the concept of tree-layouts. A tree-layout $T_G=(T,r,\rho_G)$ of a graph $G=(V,E)$ is a tree $T$ rooted at some node $r$ and equipped with a one-to-one mapping $\rho_G$ between $V$ and the nodes of $T$ such that for every edge $xy\in E$, either $x$ is an ancestor of $y$ or $y$ is an ancestor of $x$. Clearly, layouts are tree-layouts. Excluding a pattern in a tree-layout is defined similarly as excluding a pattern in a layout, but now using the ancestor relation. Unexplored graph classes can be defined by means of tree-layouts excluding some patterns. As a proof of concept, we show that excluding non-indifference triples in tree-layouts yields a natural notion of proper chordal graphs. We characterize proper chordal graphs and position them in the hierarchy of known subclasses of chordal graphs. We also provide a canonical representation of proper chordal graphs that encodes all the indifference tree-layouts rooted at some vertex. Based on this result, we first design a polynomial time recognition algorithm for proper chordal graphs. We then show that the problem of testing isomorphism between two proper chordal graphs is in P, whereas this problem is known to be GI-complete on chordal graphs.

The tree of decomposition of a biconnected graph

Abstract:The tree of decomposition of a $k$-connected graph by a set $\mathfrak S$ of pairwise independent $k$-vertex cutsets is defined as follows. The vertices of this tree are cutsets of $\mathfrak S$ and parts of decomposition of the graph by the set $\mathfrak S$, each cutset is adjacent to all parts that contain it. We prove, that the graph described above is a tree. The tree of decomposition of a biconnected graph is a particular case of this construction: it is the tree of decomposition of a biconnected graph by the set of all its single cutsets (i.e. 2-vertex cutsets, that are independent with all other 2-vertex cutsets). We show that this tree has much in common with the classic tree of blocks and cutpoints of a connected graph. With the help of the tree of decomposition of a biconnected graph we prove a planarity criterium and find some upper bounds on the chromatic number of this graph. Finally, we study the structure of critical biconnected graphs and prove that each such graph has at least four vertices of degree 2.

Bijections and congruences involving lattice paths and integer compositions

Abstract:We prove new bijections between different variants of Dyck paths and integer compositions, which give combinatorial explanations of their simple counting formula $4^{n-1}$. These give relations between different statistics, such as the number of crossings of the $x$-axis in classes of Dyck bridges or the distribution of peaks in classes of Dyck paths, and furthermore relate them with $k$- and $g$-compositions. These allow us to find and prove congruence results for Dyck paths and parity results for compositions. Our investigation uncovers unexpected connections to mock theta functions, Hardinian arrays, little Schr\"oder paths, Fibonacci numbers, and irreducible pairs of compositions, offering new insights into the structures of paths, partitions and compositions.

On tripartite common graphs

Abstract:A graph H is common if the number of monochromatic copies of H in a 2-edge-colouring of the complete graph is minimised by the random colouring. Burr and Rosta, extending a famous conjecture by Erdos, conjectured that every graph is common. The conjectures by Erdos and by Burr and Rosta were disproved by Thomason and by Sidorenko, respectively, in the late 1980s. Collecting new examples for common graphs had not seen much progress since then, although very recently, a few more graphs are verified to be common by the flag algebra method or the recent progress on Sidorenko's conjecture. Our contribution here is to give a new class of tripartite common graphs. The first example class is so-called triangle-trees, which generalises two theorems by Sidorenko and answers a question by Jagger, Šťovíček, and Thomason from 1996. We also prove that, somewhat surprisingly, given any tree T, there exists a triangle-tree such that the graph obtained by adding T as a pendant tree is still common. Furthermore, we show that adding arbitrarily many apex vertices to any connected bipartite graph on at most five vertices give a common graph.

Abstract:A separation of a graph $G$ is a partition $(A_1, A_2, C)$ of $V(G)$ such that $A_1$ is anticomplete to $A_2$. A classic result from Robertson and Seymour's Graph Minors Project states that there is a correspondence between tree decompositions and laminar collections of separations. A many-sided separation of a graph $G$ is a partition $(A_1, \ldots, A_k, C)$ of $V(G)$ such that $A_i$ is anticomplete to $A_j$ for all $1 \leq i < j \leq k$. In this note, we show a correspondence between tree decompositions with a certain parity property, called deciduous tree decompositions, and laminar collections of many-sided separations.

Canonical decompositions in monadically stable and bounded shrubdepth graph classes

Abstract:We use model-theoretic tools originating from stability theory to derive a result we call the Finitary Substitute Lemma, which intuitively says the following. Suppose we work in a stable graph class C, and using a first-order formula {\phi} with parameters we are able to define, in every graph G in C, a relation R that satisfies some hereditary first-order assertion {\psi}. Then we are able to find a first-order formula {\phi}' that has the same property, but additionally is finitary: there is finite bound k such that in every graph G in C, different choices of parameters give only at most k different relations R that can be defined using {\phi}'. We use the Finitary Substitute Lemma to derive two corollaries about the existence of certain canonical decompositions in classes of well-structured graphs. - We prove that in the Splitter game, which characterizes nowhere dense graph classes, and in the Flipper game, which characterizes monadically stable graph classes, there is a winning strategy for Splitter, respectively Flipper, that can be defined in first-order logic from the game history. Thus, the strategy is canonical. - We show that for any fixed graph class C of bounded shrubdepth, there is an O(n^2)-time algorithm that given an n-vertex graph G in C, computes in an isomorphism-invariant way a structure H of bounded treedepth in which G can be interpreted. A corollary of this result is an O(n^2)-time isomorphism test and canonization algorithm for any fixed class of bounded shrubdepth.

Abstract:One perspective on tree decompositions is that they display (low-order) separations of the underlying graph or matroid. The separations displayed by a tree decomposition are necessarily nested. In 2013, Clark and Whittle proved the existence of tree decompositions with flowers added in which, up to a natural equivalence, all low-order separations are displayed. An important step in that proof is to show that flowers can be extended to maximal flowers. In this paper we generalise the notion of a flower to pseudoflowers in graph-like spaces and show for our generalisation, flowers can be extended to maximal flowers.
