Abstract:Let be a real closed field. Given a closed and bounded semialgebraic set and semialgebraic continuous functions such that , there exist an integer and such that the inequality (Łojasiewicz inequality) holds for all . In this paper, we consider the case when A is defined by a quantifier-free formula with atoms of the form for some finite subset of polynomials , and the graphs of are also defined by quantifier-free formulas with atoms of the form , for some finite set . We prove that the Łojasiewicz exponent in this case is bounded by . Our bound depends on d and n but is independent of the combinatorial parameters, namely the cardinalities of and . The previous best-known upper bound in this generality appeared in P. Solernó, Effective Łojasiewicz Inequalities in Semi-Algebraic Geometry, Applicable Algebra in Engineering, Communication and Computing (1991) and depended on the sum of degrees of the polynomials defining and thus implicitly on the cardinalities of and . As a consequence, we improve the current best error bounds for polynomial systems under some conditions. Finally, we prove a version of Łojasiewicz inequality in polynomially bounded o-minimal structures. We prove the existence of a common upper bound on the Łojasiewicz exponent for certain combinatorially defined infinite (but not necessarily definable) families of pairs of functions. This improves a prior result of Chris Miller (C. Miller, Expansions of the real field with power functions, Ann. Pure Appl. Logic (1994)).

Abstract:Let $f$ be a germ of a smooth function at the orirgin in $\RR^n.$ We show that if $f$ is Kouchnirenko's nondegenerate and satisfies the so called Kamimoto--Nose condition then it admits the Łojasiewicz inequalities. We compute the Łojasiewicz exponents for some special cases. In particular, if $f$ is a germ of a smooth convex Kouchnirenko's nondegenerate function and satisfies the Kamimoto--Nose condition, then all its Łojasiewicz exponents can be expressed very simply in terms of its Newton polyhedron.

Real Analytic Methods in the Formulations of some Combinatorial Inequalities

Abstract:In this paper, we derive some new combinatorial inequalities by applying well known real analytic results like Hölder's inequality, Young's inequality, and Minkowiski's inequality to the recursively defined sequence $f_n$ of functions \begin{align*} f_0(x) & = \chi_{(-1/2, 1/2)} (x), \nonumber f_{n+1}(x) & = f_n(x+1/2)+ f_n(x-1/2), n \in \mathbb{N}\,\cup \,\{0\}. \end{align*} Towards this goal, we derive the closed form of the aforementioned sequence $ (f_n)_{n\in \mathbb{N}\,\cup \,\{0\}}$ of functions and show that it is a sequence of simple functions that are linear combinations of characteristic functions of some unit intervals $ I_{n,i},\, i=0,1, ..., n $, with values the binomial coefficients $ \binom{n}{i}$ on each unit interval $I_{n,i}$. We show that $ f_n \in L^p(\mathbb{R})),\, 1\leq p \leq \infty $. Besides applying real analytic methods to formulate some combinatorial inequalities, we also illustrate the application of some combinatorial identities. For example, we use the Vandermonde convolution (or Vandermonde identity), in the study of some properties of the sequence of functions $ (f_n)_{n\in\mathbb{ N}\cup \{0\}}$. We show how the $L^2$ norm of $f_n$ is related to the Catalan numbers.

Abstract:We consider arbitrary algebraic families of lower order deformations of nondegenerate toric exponential sums over a finite field. We construct a relative polytope with the aid of which we define a ring of coefficients consisting of p-adic analytic functions with polyhedral growth prescribed by the relative polytope. Using this we compute relative cohomology for such families and calculate sharp estimates for the relative Frobenius map. In applications one is interested in L-functions associated with linear algebra operations (symmetric powers, tensor powers, exterior powers and combinations thereof) applied to the relative Frobenius. Using methods pioneered by Ax, Katz and Bombieri we prove estimates for the degree and total degree of the associated L-function and p-divisibility of the reciprocal zeros and poles. Similar estimates are then established for affine families and pure Archimedean weight families (in the simplicial case).

Abstract:The representation of positive polynomials on a semi-algebraic set in terms of sums of squares is a central question in real algebraic geometry, which the Positivstellensatz answers. In this paper, we study the effective Putinar's Positivestellensatz on a compact basic semi-algebraic set $S$ and provide a new proof and new improved bounds on the degree of the representation of positive polynomials. These new bounds involve a parameter $\epsilon$ measuring the non-vanishing of the positive function, the constant $\mathfrak{c}$ and exponent $L$ of a Łojasiewicz inequality for the semi-algebraic distance function associated to the inequalities $\mathbf{g} = (g_1, \dots , g_r)$ defining $S$. They are polynomial in $\mathfrak{c}$ and $\epsilon^{-1}$ with an exponent depending only on $L$. We analyse in details the Łojasiewicz inequality when the defining inequalities $\mathbf g$ satisfy the Constraint Qualification Condition. We show that, in this case, the Łojasiewicz exponent $L$ is $1$ and we relate the Łojasiewicz constant $\mathfrak{c}$ with the distance of $\mathbf g$ to the set of singular systems.

Abstract:Rencently Chow, Huang, Li and Zhou proposed discrete forms of the Fokker-Planck equations on a finite graph. As a primary step, they constructed Riemann metrics on the graph by endowing it with some kinds of weight. In this paper, we reveal the relation between these Riemann metrics and the Euclidean metric, by showing that they are locally equivalent. Moreover, various Riemann metrics have this property provided the corresponding weight satisfies a bounded condition. Based on this, we prove that the two-side Łojasiewicz inequality holds near the Gibbs distribution with Łojasiewicz exponent \begin{document}$ \frac{1}{2} $\end{document}. Then we use it to prove the solution of the discrete Fokker-Planck equation converges to the Gibbs distribution with exponential rate. As a corollary of Łojasiewicz inequality, we show that the two-side Talagrand-type inequality holds under different Riemann metrics.

Abstract:We consider multiple orthogonal polynomials associated with the exponential cubic weight e−x3 over two contours in the complex plane. We study the basic properties of these polynomials, including the Rodrigues formula and nearest-neighbor recurrence relations. It turns out that the recurrence coefficients are related to a discrete Painlevé equation. The asymptotics of the recurrence coefficients, the ratio of the diagonal multiple orthogonal polynomials and the (scaled) zeros of these polynomials are also investigated.

Abstract:In this paper, we study polar quotients and Łojasiewicz exponents of plane curve singularities, which are {\em not necessarily reduced}. We first show that the polar quotients is a topological invariant. We next prove that the Łojasiewicz gradient exponent can be computed in terms of the polar quotients, and so it is also a topological invariant. As an application, we give effective estimates of the Łojasiewicz exponents in the gradient and classical inequalities of polynomials in two (real or complex) variables.

Abstract:We give a congruence for L-functions coming from affine additive exponential sums over a finite field. Precisely, we give a congruence for certain operators coming from Dwork's theory. This congruence is very similar to the congruence of Manin for the characteristic polynomial of the action of Frobenius on the Jacobian of a curve defined over a finite field.

Computation of the exponential function of matrices by a formula without oscillatory integrals on infinite intervals

Abstract:We propose a quadrature-based formula for computing the exponential function of matrices with a non-oscillatory integral on an infinite interval and an oscillatory integral on a finite interval. In the literature, existing quadrature-based formulas are based on the inverse Laplace transform or the Fourier transform. We show these expressions are essentially equivalent in terms of complex integrals and choose the former as a starting point to reduce computational cost. By choosing a simple integral path, we derive an integral expression mentioned above. Then, we can easily apply the double-exponential formula and the Gauss-Legendre formula, which have rigorous error bounds. As numerical experiments show, the proposed formula outperforms the existing formulas when the imaginary parts of the eigenvalues of matrices have large absolute values.

Abstract:The Łojasiewicz inequality and Łojasiewicz exponent reveal a fundamental relation between a potential function and its gradient. In this paper, we explore the Łojasiewicz exponent of Kuramoto model and prove that the exponent is exactly 12 for equilibria located inside a quarter of circle. This implies that the convergence towards such a phase-locked state must be exponentially fast. In contrast, we give an example to see the exponent can be less than 12 for other equilibriums. More precisely, we prove that the exponent for the bi-cluster equilibrium, which is located on the boundary of a quarter of circle, is 13. This gives an insight for the occurrence of exponential and algebraic convergence of Kuramoto model. We also present a general theorem for exponential convergence of second-order gradient-like system, by which a criterion for the Kuramoto model with inertia is established.

Abstract:Using a differential equation approach asymptotic expansions are rigorously obtained for Lommel, Weber, Anger-Weber and Struve functions, as well as Neumann polynomials, each of which is a solution of an inhomogeneous Bessel equation. The approximations involve Airy and Scorer functions, and are uniformly valid for large real order $\nu$ and unbounded complex argument $z$. An interesting complication is the identification of the Lommel functions with the new asymptotic solutions, and in order to do so it is necessary to consider certain sectors of the complex plane, as well as introduce new forms of Lommel and Struve functions.
